A British medical panel concluded last week that Dr. Wakefield had been dishonest, violated basic research ethics rules and showed a “callous disregard” for the suffering of children involved in his research. Dr. Richard Horton, editor in chief of The Lancet, said that until that decision, he had no proof that Dr. Wakefield’s 1998 paper was deceptive.
The American Conservative Movement and the GOP should be happy today. We should have pep in our step and a purpose in our stride. Two special elections were held yesterday, and the GOP treated the Dems with the contempt that The Philadelphia Phillies recently treated my beloved Atlanta Braves. The GOP picked off a district that had been a Democratic fiefdom since 1923. A district where people genuinely liked Anthony Weiner.
But no…we also had a GOP debate Monday night that was a debacle. We have a candidate in our race, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, who actually walks around believing that vaccinating your children against diseases can make them retarded. She pulled this issue out and used it as a club to beat Texas Governor, Rick Perry with at the Florida GOP Primary debate.
This line of attack hinges upon the fact that Governor Perry ordered girls in Texas receive the vaccination Gardasil as a preventative measure to prevent them from getting HPV. No girls were actually given shots, because Gov. Perry was overrruled by the state legislature. Bachmann scored points by arguing that Governor Perry had no business telling parents how to look after the well-being of children unless there was obvious evidence of abuse. She then commented that Merck, Gardasil’s producer, had supported Governor Perry with political contributions. But afterwards, she claimed to have personally met the mother of a 12 year old girl that was rendered mentally enfeebled by a Gardasil shot.
This is junk science. This garbage came into the public vernacular in 1998 when a Canadian Dr. Andrew Wakefield reported in the Journal Lancet that the MMR vaccination could give children autism. Lancet formally retracted this study in 2010. This is a level of professional repudiation that occurs in scientific circles when published research is shown to be as dishonest and unethical as The Piltdown Man or The Cold Fusion Hoax.
Lancet did this only under duress. The sort of duress that occurs when numerous well-funded research projects demonstrate conclusively that the underlying claim of an article is about as logical as Al Gore maundering about Millibears. By numerous I mean American Journal of Preventive Medicine, August 2003, Pediatrics, November 2003, New England Journal of Medicine, September 2007, Pediatrics, February 2009, New England Journal of Medicine, November 2002, Pediatrics, February 2004, PLoS ONE 3(9): e3140. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0003140, and Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, April 2006. This list, perhaps not even exhaustive, represents eight separate, refereed, published debunkings of the “Science” that Congresswoman Bachmann relies upon when she claims Gardasil, (or any other vaccination) could cause mental retardation.
This is a prime example of a Republican politician who is anti-science. Anti-science in the same way Al Gore is anti-science. Anti-science in the way those politicians are when they use obviously fake and dishonest research to garner personal and professional power. If the Congresswoman was not aware that this science was dishonest, she was gob-smackingly ignorant.
In the past, I have written favorably about Michele Bachmann. I described her policies as “meat and potatoes, limited government Conservatism”, meaning this in the most praiseworthy fashion. Up until that debate, I liked Michele Bachmann and wasn’t listening to the accusations that she was a nut.
She once received a fair hearing from me, but now I’ve heard enough. There were several ways she could have attacked Rick Perry on the Gardasil Issue without resorting to snake oil worthy of a John Edwards pick-up line. People like Michele Bachmann, who latch on to the scientific dishonesty of self-interested crack-pots like Dr. Andrew Wakefield, play into the hands of the David Brooks “Republicans.”
This will undoubtedly show up as fodder the next time Brooks, David Frum or Karl Rove pens a polemic accusing Tea-Partiers of being a gang of rural ignoramuses suffering from hookworm and green teeth. By claiming that vaccinations made a 12 year-old girl retarded, she descended to Jerome Corsi level and is now an ongoing liability to the Republican Party until the gets out of the Presidential Race.

I honestly don’t know that it would have mattered who it came from, whether it be Bachmann or any other candidate. Conservatives strike me as being weary to the marrow of their bones of these kinds of political ploys and tactics. No one is in the mood to tolerate it, much less to make excuses for it.

She was beyond out of line on this, and it seems to be part of a pattern where she is truly clueless outside of her considerable and impressive areas of expertise.
But if she continues this sort of ill-informed deceptive positioning, I think it well to consider here other areas of claimed expertise and accomplishment.
As a parent of a child who was born with significant issues, the only thing I can imagine being more heartbreaking than dealing with the challenge would be to fall prey to deceptive pseudoscientific claims about why the problem exists.
The vaccine “issue” is exactly that sort of deception. It is baseless, it manipulates vulnerable people, it actually harms children when parents are fooled into believing that vaccines harm children.
As to the vaccine in question, I would ask the parents who have decided that their children should not get the vaccine this: Is cancer a suffiicient punishment for sexual sin? If so, then forbid your children to get heppatitis B vaccines as well. Because if cancer is sufficient punishment, then certainly heppatitis is no big deal either.
As to Ms. Bachmann, all she has really proven is that she remain as a member of Congress, and the sooner she realizes this the better off we all are.
As to Gov. Perry, maybe he will, and maybe won’t win the nomination.
If this vaccine ‘issue’ plays a role in it either way, then we have fallen prey to pseudo-science in a tragic way.

wrenhal (Diary) Thursday, September 15th at 10:57AM EDT (link)We have kids who are susceptible to allergies and such and have many other issues with reasons given to vaccinate. With that said, I agree there is no connection that’s been made between autism and vaccines. My big problem with that kind of statement is that there are many who trust the USDA to do what’s good for us in regards to say…. chicken. But how many of you knew that there was arsenic added to chicken feed “ON PURPOSE”. That bit of information was found out only recently by most people, yet it’s been known and just kept under wraps until Maryland sued to have it removed. With all those health conscious people told to stay away from red meat and eat more chicken, who knows the kinds of problem that long term could develop from a diet with a large amount of chicken in it. I’m no conspiracy theorists, but I do think that sometimes groups (like vaccine mfg’s.) can manipulate information that is introduced or hidden so as to make them look good. And government departments can sometimes help them in that effort.

What Michelle omitted...
justluthien Wednesday, September 14th at 2:31PM EDT (link)I raised two girls in Texas, so I’m very familiar with its mandatory vaccination policies. A couple of details conveniently omitted by Bachmann:
1) Texas is more vulnerable to a lot of childhood diseases that have been eradicated in many other states because of the illegal alien problem. So, mandatory vaccinations are pretty common in the schools. For example, when that HepC series was approved, the State almost immediately required it for the next school year.
2) Texas has a large number of Christian fundamentalists, for whom vaccines are anathema. So, there was both a medical (e.g., auto-immune deficiencies) and religious opt-out available to any parent who did not want their daughter to receive the PPV shot, as there is with any mandatory vaccination.
As to the primaries, Bachmann lost my vote on this one issue. I’m a big believer in herd immunity, in which children with auto-immune deficiencies and diseases are protected by those who can and have been vaccinated.
In the general, I’ll vote for Quasimodo if that’s what it takes to pry Obama out of the White House.

I’d read an article quite a while back that emphasized the challenges that border states have been facing re: potential for communicable diseases brought in by immigrants. One of the diseases highlighted was Tuberculosis.
Have you heard anything within the state of TX addressing this?
lineholder--
westcoastpatriette (Diary) Wednesday, September 14th at 5:12PM EDT (link)My insatiable need for facts caused me to look up this info at my favorite website for all things immigration and this is just a peek at what I found:
Illegal Immigration and Public Health
According to Dr. Laurence Nickey, director of El Paso health district in El Paso County, the incidence of tuberculosis along the border districts is twice that of the U.S. rate. Other diseases that are readily evident are leprosy and dysentery which is occuring at several times the U.S. rate.
In addition, 57.8% of all new cases of tuberculosis in 2007 were diagnosed in foreign-born persons. The tuberculosis infection rate among foreign-born persons was 9.8 times as high as that among U.S. born persons.
The article goes on identifying more frightening diseases that are being brought into our country by massive, uncontrolled illegal immigration. Legal immigrants undergo health screening before they are allowed to immigrate. Most of the illegal immigrants are coming from poor nations with endemic health problems and less developed health care–and are bringing their diseases with them.
You can find the entire article at FAIR–Federation for American Immigration Reform.

Midwifery is as old as the ages. It’s a positive option that could be and should be considered in light of the primary care doctor shortage. So is the case of NPs (Nurse Practitioners) and PAs (Physician Assistants).
I know that I come across a patient care advocacy nut sometimes with the emphasis that I put on quality of care, but it is going to be important to keep the standards high in years to come and look at the viable options open to us.

What Rep. Bachmann got Right
mrmises Wednesday, September 14th at 4:06PM EDT (link)This post misses the point. During the debate, Bachmann criticized Perry on the basis of separation of powers and government’s power to interfere with personal liberty.
These two issues are central to conservative political thought, and they form the foundation of just about every critique lodged against President Obama.
First, Bachmann’s argument that Perry overstepped his executive power by enacting the Gardasil mandate through executive order reflects a valid concern for separation of powers and constitutional government. At the state level, as well as at the federal level, the government’s powers are distributed to the three branches on the basis of legislative, judicial, and executive powers. Of course there is limited overlap to restrain any of the three co-equal branches from overstepping their role. However, the executive violates separation of powers if he engages in essentially legislative or judicial action. Bachmann argues that an executive order such as Perry’s did perform an essentially legislative function (it created new legal responsibilities for Texas citizens). For someone who believes that the Constitution means what it says and expects legislators and executives to perform their clearly defined roles, Perry’s order is an offense to ordered government. This critique would be even stronger if Perry made such orders as President because of the federalism issues it would raise.
Secondly, Bachmann expressed disdain for Perry’s willingness to invade the personal liberty of Texas’s citizens. Vaccines do not cause autism or other major medical conditions. However, administering a vaccine does involve discomfort and possible minor maladies. Also, individuals have to pay for these mandated vaccines. Perry’s order would force Texans to buy something, and he did not even consult with the legislative branch as to whether this is a policy the people want. His subversion of the legislative process makes the order’s liberty violation even more egregious.
Clearly, Bachmann’s insistence that vaccines cause serious health problems is unfounded and reflects poorly on her viability as a candidate. However, the separation of powers and liberty critiques of Perry are no less accurate and alarming. Bachmann’s argument raises serious concerns about Perry’s conservative credentials.
As far as forcing Texans to buy something,

The issue is Perry. Many people just don’t like him and will nit-pick

Those who had once simpered: “I don’t want to destroy the rich, I only want to seize a little of their surplus to help the poor, just a little, they’ll never miss it!” – then, later, had snapped: “The tycoons can stand being squeezed; they’ve amassed enough to last them for three generations” – then, later, had yelled: “Why should the people suffer while businessmen have reserves to last a year?” – now were screaming: “Why should we starve while some people have reserves to last a week?” – Atlas Shrugged
Bachmann Lied, Her Campaign Died
Freedoms Truth (Diary) Wednesday, September 14th at 5:39PM EDT (link)“First, Bachmann’s argument that Perry overstepped his executive power ”
… is wrong. in fact state law gives the power to set immunization reqts to the executive branch. The Texas Department of Health is authorized to set the immunization requirements, delegating to them to determine immunizations that might be required and/or recommended for schools and in medicaid. So the Executive Order was lawfully pursuant to that grant of authority from the lege.
If the lawyer Michelle Bachmann wants to tell us that the executive branch cant make these determiniations, she is arguing with the Texas administrative code. See:
http://info.sos.state.tx.us/pls/pub/readtac$ext.ViewTAC?tac_view=5&ti=25&pt=1&ch=97&sch=B&rl=Y
http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/immunize/rulechange.shtm#final
In other words, there was nothing illegal or outside the Governor’s powers in the Executive Order.
Was it a good idea? No, it was a mistake. Perry admitted that back in 2007 and says the same now.
“Secondly, Bachmann expressed disdain for Perry’s willingness to invade the personal liberty of Texas’s citizens. ”
And in that, she was flat-out dishonest to fail to acknowledge that no girl is ‘forced’ to take the vaccine. There is an optout provision so anyone who does not wish to take the vaccine does not have to do it.
“However, the separation of powers and liberty critiques of Perry are no less accurate and alarming.”
Yes, they are alarming, as they are equally wrong. So not only is Bachmann not a doctor, she is being obtuse and/or misleading as a lawyer.

And Bachmann, if POTUS, would not use EO's for any of that?
dajeeps (Diary) Wednesday, September 14th at 8:52PM EDT (link)I find it hard to believe that, if elected, she would not use her executive authority to issue any non-enforcement orders, which would likely be necessary to keep her promises of getting government off our backs. That would be overstepping according to your narrative. Out of all I heard on Monday, I did not hear what you stated. I heard “unconstitutional” being thrown around, along with other stretching of the truth and flat out falsehoods, but nothing about overstepping executive authority given the considerable amount of time spent on the topic compared to others.
It is constitutional for a state to mandate vaccinations as a condition of attendance in public schools. The two states I have lived in mandate them for attendance to private schools and institutions for higher learning as well.
There was no element of force. There were no children being vaccinated against the will of their parents. Congresswoman Bachmann used the word “force” several times.
Merck made no money off the order. Perry signed the override before his order took effect. Congresswoman Bachmann stated that Merck made millions off the deal.
There are at least three lies there, intentional lies or otherwise. After the mess Obama has made, the shambles our political system is currently in and the massive amounts of debt that have been piled on our nation as a result of lies and opportunism, it is likely worth a double-take regarding what we saw play out before our eyes at the debate. Even if Perry did step out of the box, he willingly took it back. Nobody is perfect. But there is a truly stark contrast between what Perry did, and what Bachmann revealed herself to be. Bachmann is not part of the solution. She is part of the problem.

Michelle Bachmann was
jjhlh1 Wednesday, September 14th at 6:31PM EDT (link)one of my favorite candidates prior to the most recent GOP debate. After listening to her less than honest attack against Rick Perry regarding the HPV vaccine (making it sound like there was no opt-out provision) and listing to her additional comments after the debate implying that the vaccine causes mental retardation, frankly I think she is now finished as a serious candidate.
However I’m still glad Rick Perry is getting vetted in this manner. Running for president is meant to be difficult because the process needs to steel the candidate for the rigors of the office.
Is that really what this is about?
renl57 Wednesday, September 14th at 6:48PM EDT (link)Michele Bachmann was absolutely wrong about the “vaccinations cause retardation” claim (though her real point was about having the freedom to choose which risks to take).
Yet I’m surprised at the vehemence of this diary. You’re worried that the GOP might be called “anti-science”??? They already are called that by the Left–almost daily–and even if Bachmann dropped out, the Left would still call the GOP anti-science.
And suddenly you’re worried that David Brooks and David Frum will call us “anti-science”??? David Frum??? Since when do you care what David Brooks or David Frum says??? (One has only to search this website to find out what you think of David Frum.) And yet suddenly you’re fearful of what they will say about us?
Give me a break.
The real reason you want Michele Bachmann out of the race is that you’re afraid that having three Tea Party favorites in the race–Bachmann, Cain, and Perry–will split the Tea Party vote and base vote, and enable Romney to squeak through. Right?
Bachmann doesn’t have to roll over and play dead for Perry. No one has crowned Perry yet.
Let him defeat her fair and square–if he can–in the primary process. Or let him cut his own deal with her in exchange for her dropping out.
More like 'Junk articles'
levinfan90 Wednesday, September 14th at 6:56PM EDT (link)There is a world of difference between an intentionally fraudulent scientific study and an ANECDOTAL experience. Michelle Bachmann never said Gardasil makes kids retarded. She just didn’t. She recounted a personal experiences she claims she had with a mother who approached her, in tears, thanking her for speaking out against Gardasil, since it had caused, supposedly, her daughter to become retarded. Is the story true? I don’t know and none of you do either. Bachmann also never repeated one of that repudiated scientist’s claims, that vaccines can cause autism. She just didn’t, and none of you can honestly say otherwise. I really think you Perry fans are just enraged that Bachmann has damaged Perry so much with this one attack that he will never be able to run away from this scandal. She hit him on a social conservative angle, on a government’s proper role angle, and on cronyism. And there is WAY more where that came from in regards to Perry. Merck wasn’t even on Perry’s top 200 contributors list. This will only get worse for him.

All of this was irresponsible and displayed ignorance or deception for political gain. Not a good quality in a candidate. I think all of the arguments against the Gardasil policy are weak but this one is indefensible.
If Merck wasn’t even on Perry’s top 200 contributors list, then your case for cronyism is pretty weak. You say there is WAY more coming on this angle. What exactly?
Just so you know, my top choice is probably Cain, my second is Perry, although that could change. Bachmann was in the top 2 or so until this week.

Merck did not make any money off the order
dajeeps (Diary) Wednesday, September 14th at 7:57PM EDT (link)No one was ever given the shot as a result of the order. The order was overridden by the legislature before it could take effect, and Perry signed the override. If he really only cared about Merck, he could have vetoed it. Bachmann stated that Merck made millions off the deal, which of course is false.
I have my issues with mandatory vaccinations. But, within the confines of state-run education I understand them to the point of vaccination for communicable diseases that can be transmitted just by being in proximity of an infected person. It would not matter if they were mandatory, I would get them for my kids anyway. With that said, I do not agree with Perry’s order, even though it did have an opt-out because I am rather sensitive to the nanny-state “nudge,” which is exactly what this was. My preference in that situation would be to support a public awareness campaign to let people know the dangers and let them judge the risks and take action as they deem appropriate.
I think the whole issue is over-blown, however. There was no element of force, children being vaccinated against the wishes of their parents, like it has been made out to be. That, in itself, is false.
If there is one thing that I am very tired of, it is lying politicians whether it be one Republican lying about another, Democrats lying about Republicans, or Democrats just plain old lying about everything. Lies are lies, and Bachmann did not do herself any favors in my eyes by making herself look just like Democrats, lying when it might play to her advantage. She is just one more of those sorts and not worthy of the Presidency.

Bachmann is an Opportunist
tbert00 Wednesday, September 14th at 11:28PM EDT (link)Michele Bachmann latched onto the Tea Party in a quest to climb the political ladder and is nothing more than an opportunist in the same mold as Obama. It’s absurd that she believes she’s ready to be president after two terms in the House. Obama had two years in the Senate, so I suppose she feels that four years in the House is more than sufficient. Bachmann’s shameless self-promotion has been a turn-off from the very beginning, and the Tea Party is seeing the real Michele as evidenced by her sinking poll numbers. The faster she exits stage left, the better off the race will be.

Saw Bachmann on Leno....
evilleramsfan Saturday, September 17th at 1:51AM EDT (link)….and all I can say is that she is officially toast. The whole first session was about Gardasil and she was studdering and stammering to explain herself to Leno.
The second session was just her trying to explain the Tea Party movement (of which she did a pitiful job). Not one question was answered as to what her view for the country consisted of. She completely blew a chance to get her message out.
When someone asks to define the Tea Party, it is a very simple matter…. The Tea Party was started as an offshoot of Rick Santelli’s rant about government spending too much. Word got out about his rant where he said we should have a bunch of Tea Parties to protest the spending. Those of us who actually were at those first Tea Parties keyed in on 3 main points: stop spending, reign in federal government control, and get back to the simple constitutional model our forefathers gave us. All the rest of these social issues are chaff and do not need to be part of the national dialogue. All this does is splinter what would otherwise be a formidable group. Besides which, if we actually got back to the Constitution, the states would sort out the social issues themselves.
