A Republic If You Can Keep It

And It?s DOOM! Only If You Let It Transpire

This Man, Like Our Media, Does Not Have The America's Best Interests At Heart

The future of the West is not a limitless tending upwards and onwards for all time towards our presents ideals, but a single phenomenon of history, strictly limited and defined as to form and duration, which covers a few centuries and can be viewed and, in essentials, calculated from available precedents. With this enters the age of gigantic conflicts, in which we find ourselves today. It is the transition from Napoleonism to Caesarism, a general phase of evolution, which occupies at least two centuries and can be shown to exist in all Cultures…..”

– Oswald Spengler, Decline of The West (HT: Goodreads.com)

To read Decline of The West is to ascend near the top of an intellectual and philosophical mountain. The language is complex and poetic. The topics are lofty and grand. The sweep is vast and nearly infinite. But then wait a minute…This dude is nucking futz! Spengler comes by the bugginess fairly and honorably. He inherits the intellectual traditions of Marx, Hegel and Goethe. He pays the full price of admission for his ride on the deterministic crazy train through a life spent studying mathematics, philosophy and history. But keep in mind his system is only a model. His predictions are merely warnings and his pronouncements can all be specifically nullified through the exercise of individual free will organized towards a collective mutual goal. In short, “thanks for the heads-up Oswald, but we can kick Doom’s butt.”

The inevitable transition from Napoleonism to Caesarism involves a fall into dependence and despotism. The rotting of our vibrant republic into a society where as Business Insider puts it: “IT’S OFFICIAL: Having Kids Is For Dumb People.” And while its undoubtedly regrettable that the charming and lovely Blodgetts, and the delightfully intellectual Weisenthals never got CC’d on that particular article; this is also the typical peripatetic tripe that ripe-suck liberals have been attempting to jam down the throats of average Americans for the last several generations. And then these yap-jaw, Birkenstock Bolsheviks wonder aloud that Americans are really pessimistic.

Spengler goes on to predict what we can expect out of the near future as our society prepares to scrape the bottom of its self-besotted cultural Marianas Trench.

The last century [the 19th] was the winter of the West, the victory of materialism and scepticism, of socialism, parliamentarianism, and money. But in this century blood and instinct will regain their rights against the power of money and intellect. The era of individualism, liberalism and democracy, of humanitarianism and freedom, is nearing its end. The masses will accept with resignation the victory of the Caesars, the strong men, and will obey them

– Spengler Decline of The West

Now Spengler obviously speaks with the pompitous of one who is brighter than your standard-edition mutt. However, we don’t live in his deterministic universe, any more than we live on a planet with a climate that is effectively modeled by the UN IPCC. Spengler simply surveyed past events to predict the future through a prism of philosophical depth, leavened with the pungent epistemological bong smoke of German Romanticism. He sounded a lot better, more accurate and smarter than he truly was. Contra Spengler, you and I can show up at our appropriate polling stations and decide where this sucker goes next.

Because we have that power, American politics has been systematically rendered dispirited, dull and demoralizing on purpose. When you pop open a site on the Internet and see the headline “Santorum Comes From Behind In Alabama Three-Way,” you can stop and think several things. “Is Santorum Sick?” “Are they doing this purpose?*”

They are obviously doing this purpose. They want you stupid, they want you demoralized, and they want you to believe in the fraudulent determinism of your own ineluctable doom. DO NOT let the vapid and worthless prating of some Media-Mouth of Sauron dissuade you from the higher goal of preserving our society from the barbaric rabble that assaults it from within and without. We can and we will take out this leftist garbage running The White House and The US Senate this November.

I’ll conclude with three dudes from Canada who probably figured this whole thing out a lot better than Oswald Spengler. Take it away, Gentlemen!

* “Bleep, why the edit wasn’t I invited?” is not a response I wanna’ hear.

    Thank you.

While it’ll take more than winning one election to undo 100 years of liberal mission-creep, they’re close enough to the end game that it’s rather concerning to me.

p.s. speaking of “Freewill” – at least one member of Rush claimed to have been under the influence of Ayn Rand …

That was when Rush was awesome. Posting “Temples of Syrinx” would have triggered a “Geek Ban” but dayum, that was great music.

        Another man-against-the-State tune.

Careful, Jack. Someone may start calling you a libertarian-sympathizer.

“We can and we will take out this leftist garbage running The White House and The US Senate this November.”

Not if Romney is the nominee. At best we will replace the garbage with garbage. Most likely we will just keep the same garbage, as I think Romney is unelectable.

    • Repair_Man_Jack

If so, stay home now. Conservative in the primaries, GOP in the general.

      • wantthegopback

I have a liberal friend who argues that Romney will actually be able to get more progressive legislation through than Obama. He says he emotionally prefers Obama, but as a progressive he should probably, practically support Romney.

I did say back in 2008 I’d never go for a GW type again, I was done carrying water. I was tired of holding my nose while pulling the lever.

I hope I won’t have to make that choice this year. But as my signature says, 2016 isn’t that far off.

nor do I require someone I agree with uniformly, or even often. But if the choice is between a progressive liberal, and a progressive liberal? Telling me to vote for the progressive liberal with a few more conservatives in his cabinet hardly inspires.

I can say this: if Romney gives Paul a cabinet position, I won?t vote for him. Ever.

          • Repair_Man_Jack

Is there anyone at this time you could vote for in the GOP, or are you just here to troll?

          • wantthegopback

You think I am trolling because I state I have reservations about voting for Romney? Or was it something else I did?

I would have happily voted for Perry. I think he was the only one who was presidential material from the beginning. I think Santorum could grow into the position, but I would prefer that he do that before becoming president. I don’t think he is really ready this cycle. Never the less, I support him.

Newt is not really my guy for many reasons, but I would vote for him if he were the nominee without having to hold my nose.

Ron Paul is a decent guy who is already promoted into his highest level of incompetence as a house member. Many of his supporters however are bad people, loons, or both.

Personally I think we will lose this cycle. If we nominate Romney we lose, no doubt in my mind. If we nominate Santorum or Newt we probably loose, but at least we stand for something and I think will be better set for 2016.

” I don?t want to get ratings for my blog/radio show/tv show, I want the GOP to govern.”

who do you think actually prefers having blog or tv ratings to seeing the GOP govern?

    But we aren’t there yet…

In a historic perspective our best hope for the moment is that we will have learned from the mistakes of others* and not duplicate them so horribly that we cannot turn back the mistakes of the past that have put the Republic in jeopardy of failing.

*or just get it right, even if by some happy accident…

Spenglerian doom and gloom surfaces every time the U.S. gets itself into some economic hot water.

During the Great Depression of the 1930s, a lot of folks said America was on the skids.

During the Stagflation of the 1970s, a lot of folks said that America was on the skids (and there was even a popular book, “Japan as Number One”). The rising power of the U.S.S.R. contributed to that gloom.

    Now those views seem quaint.

But all these doom-and-gloomers made the same mistake. They all started from the assumption “If present trends continue, then….”

But present trends don’t always continue. They can reverse–sometimes sharply.

Civilization is not like Newton’s Laws of Motion, running on inertia.

Looking at trends should be as cautionary notes, what might happen in the future. Not as predictions of what will happen.
