Who measures the measurer? If it takes 80 govern mental agencies to run a school system it's no wonder why almost every state in the union is broke. The key word in governmental is mental, if we could eliminate all these public sector unions then eleiminate half of all gov agencies we'd be well on the way to fiscal sanity. I say eliminate only half because first, no one would ever miss them and then we'd have a better chance of actually finding out what does work. But teachers who argue with their own students are NOT teachers they're peers.

(in a fairly conservative, not very diverse neighborhood in Mountain Brook, AL), my husband and I attended the open house at the beginning of the year where you visit each classroom and meet the teachers. Our last stop was his sophomore history class where the "old ex-hippie" teacher (as my son had described her) proceeded to tell us how pleased she was that the students seemed so open-minded in the debates they had already had. As she struggled to get her point across, she finally blurted out, "Let's just say they aren't all good little Mountain Brook Republicans."

Needless to say, my husband practically dragged me out of the classroom before I could confront her although several of the parents toward the back where we were standing had already heard me gasp. When we got home, we discussed her comment with our son who literally begged me not to say anything because he had a lot of friends in the class, he liked his schedule, etc. More importantly, he said he knew she was biased and just wanted to get the class overwith.

To make a long story short, I waited until open house rolled around the next year and sent the teacher a long email regarding her comment and advising that I really didn't care if she voiced her opinion in class as long as she didn't denigrate or suppress the opinions of her students who might disagree with her (or hold it against them), but that I doubted they felt free to do so considering her bias. Further, that as a conservative, I had demonstrated my open-mindedness by tolerating her comment and giving her the benefit of the doubt rather than bringing it to the attention of the principal and the school board. I followed this up with several examples of hateful, intolerant speech from the left. I also reminded her that it was us good Mountain Brook Republicans who were paying her salary.

Her response was one of those "I didn't intend to offend, and if I did so, I apologize" comments. In retrospect, I regret I didn't follow up with the principal and the school board, however, she did retire a few years later.

I guess the point is that this kind of bias isn't just infiltrating liberal areas.

(about as rare as the white whale) I see the problems firsthand. One of the chief problems is teacher accountability. Thanks to the unions, a poor teacher is quite difficult to fire. A friend joked once: 'I'm tenured, I would have to choke a kid to get fired. Sadly, there is more truth in that than most would care to believe. Teachers must be held to a high standard and if that standard is not met then they should be let go, Secondly, the breakdown of the family nucleus has contributed to the drop in student achievement. As a child, if I behaved or performed poorly in the classroom there were consequences to pay at home . This mentality has changed. This semester, I had a student who was disrespectful and disruptive. When I called his mother her response was that he is a handful and that I should do what I 'need to do'. The issue of parent involvement is at least as great as that of teacher accountability. Parents have a responsibility to ensure their children are doing their due diligence and conducting themselves well. Parents also need to hold the feet of any poor or under performing teacher (or school) to the fire.

At the same time, we all know a good teacher when we see one, and it's unrealistic to keep expecting them to join the profession simply for the non-monetary rewards"...

I also think there's a lot to be said for the German model, where businesses invest in high schools to make sure students are prepared for the labor market - though when some German businesses tried this in NC, the students didn't show up:

I don't understand why this is a national story on the right wing side. Is it supposed to reflect poorly on Obama?

Clearly the teacher is wrong about the ability to arrest with her mentioning of Bush and Obama

Something tells me that if this story had revolved around Speaker of the House John Boehner or Chief Justice Roberts, this would have remained a local story

If a video appears to push a certain theme about Obama, it becomes a story. No matter how local, incorrect, or distant from reality it is

It's time to stop trimming around the edges of the bush, and yank it out both root and stem. Where there are states with Repbulican majorities, and ideally, conservative majorities, it is long past time to take direct action against the unions, and government employed teachers.

Years ago, North Carolina was rated as 42nd in the nation, in terms of educational achievement. Things have not gotten any better. The answer from Raleigh has always been "need more money". As every public school teacher and administrator is a state employee (problem #1), there should be a state law that protects children against social, religious, and political indoctrination, prohibiting the use of children in any political or budgetary action, and prohibiting forced unionization / persecution of teachers - complete with fines and jail time against the teachers, school management, and school district administration.

My personal preference goes much further, is that our educational system be privatized where NO teacher or administrator is a state employee. Compensation is not based on seniority, but achievement of their students - verified by the parents, who are paying 1/2 of that teacher's compensation directly, through a reduction in property taxes allocated to public education.

Establish conversion dates, county by county from smallest to largest. Teachers could form their own companies, or private companies can hire select teachers and enter agreements to rent county school property. The county cuts all school related property taxes, and allocates a set dollar amount per student, per grade level. The schools establish their identity, standards, course structure, and pricing structure. They promote their curriculum, specialties, and select teachers, and promote their services to the community. Parents, while receiving some tax relief, are expected to pay for their children's education - all of it. It is their responsibility to select the appropriate school for their children, support its needs, and demand a better education. The schools also have the right to choose their students based on educational achievement and behavioral criteria.

State schools, with state employee teachers are chartered to provide a standard state education will be available at every grade level in every county. Their course material and standards, are as currently established. These schools are for those parents who choose not to pay for their child's education or cannot afford it, for for those children with behavioral issues, and for special needs children.

It's time to break the chains of compulsory taxation, compulsory one-size-fits-all education, and mediocrity. Reduce the size and scope of State Board of Education, reduce the number of state government employees, and reduce the financing and influence of labor unions. It is time to implement full parental choice, and return our schools to centers for academic excellence.

It’s time to stop trimming around the edges of the bush, and yank it out both root and stem. Where there are states with Repbulican majorities, and ideally, conservative majorities, it is long past time to take direct action against the unions, and government employed teachers.

Years ago, North Carolina was rated as 42nd in the nation, in terms of educational achievement. Things have not gotten any better. The answer from Raleigh has always been “need more money”. As every public school teacher and administrator is a state employee (problem #1), there should be a state law that protects children against social, religious, and political indoctrination, prohibiting the use of children in any political or budgetary action, and prohibiting forced unionization / persecution of teachers – complete with fines and jail time against the teachers, school management, and school district administration.

My personal preference goes much further, is that our educational system be privatized where NO teacher or administrator is a state employee. Compensation is not based on seniority, but achievement of their students – verified by the parents, who are paying 1/2 of that teacher’s compensation directly, through a reduction in property taxes allocated to public education.

Parents, while receiving some tax relief, are expected to pay for their children’s education – all of it.

These schools are for those parents who choose not to pay for their child’s education or cannot afford it, for for those children with behavioral issues, and for special needs children.

They do in SC. I daresay that SC isn't the only state that takes this approach, but they are the state that I am most familiar with how the system works.

They put more emphasis on offering vocational training at the high school level. A system has been set up whereby courses that are provided at vocational high schools are aligned with courses that are provided at local community colleges. By the time the student graduates, they can have the first year of a AS degree completed. They've gained practical job skills and experience, so yes, there are companies that recruit at the high school level.

It works for SC. But it isn't something that would be reflected in standardized test scores.

For the Dems and the left, NC was supposed to be "the gateway to the south". They've been chipping away at this state for years, believing that if they gain NC to their side, long-term, then it would open the door for them to start chipping away at the SE of US. Civil rights issues and political correctness have been the cornerstones of their battle here.

Things aren't going as planned. First, there was the midterm vote, turning the entire state legislature over to the Republicans. Then there was all the corruption that folks in the D party in NC got caught up in, along with actions on the part of Perdue that sunk popularity of the D brand. Then there was the Amendment 1 vote. And most recently, Romney is leading in this state by 8.

The "call to order" by those who claim the mantle of being civil rights leaders (many of them members of NAACP) has gone out and is being ignored by a certain portion of residents here (as compared to how they might have responded to it in the past)

it would prevent the quality of education from continuing to drop.

Maybe we should be looking at those agencies as well. What do they do? What do they measure? How effective are they? Why do we have so many?
