DeMint’s Bold Objection Forces Pelosi, Reid and Obama to Scurry Behind Closed Doors on Health Care Reform (Again)

Aside from a handful of mentions, not much has been made thus far of Republican Senator Jim DeMint’s courageous objection to the appointment of conferees on the health care bill.

Most people know that the House passed one version of a health care bill at 11 pm on a Saturday, while the Senate passed a very different version at 7am on Christmas Eve. Before any bill can go to the President for signature, those differences are normally resolved in what is known as a conference report, negotiated by representatives, called “conferees,” appointed by the House and the Senate.

But Senator DeMint led a behind-the-scenes effort by Senate Republicans to object to the appointment of conferees. The objection means the House will take up the Senate bill, and if any changes are made, the bill has to work its way back through the entire legislative process in the Senate again. And changing the bill means another tough vote for nervous House Democrats, and even more disconcerting for Senator Reid, the bill will have to go through the whole Senate procedure again, working to collect another 60 votes. Further, the process will potentially expose the bill to new amendments from those in Congress who saw the deal Senator Nelson negotiated in exchange for his support.

This is signifcant! Let’s not forget how expensive it was for Reid to get 60 votes the first time. Pelosi and Reid must now huddle behind closed doors, unofficially, and try to hammer out yet another secret bill that is capable of winning the votes of 60 Senators.

Of course, working behind closed doors is nothing new for them. For the past year, Pelosi, Reid and the White House have shrouded their so-called “reform” efforts in secrecy. Beginning in the spring, transparency has been non-existent, first at invitation-only meetings with health insurers and health care providers, when the White House was trying to project a “listening” frame of mind. If only they had listened to the American people.

But the closed door meetings didn’t end there. Throughout the summer, in private chambers on Capitol Hill, Senators like Max Baucus and Christopher Dodd, and Representatives like Charlie Rangel and Pete Stark held private meetings to negotiate a bill away from the bright lights of public scrutiny.

All of this is in direct opposition to a promise made by then-Senator Obama, three months before he was elected President, when he told a crowd in New Hampshire, “…what we will do is, we’ll have the negotiations televised on C-SPAN, so that people can see who is making arguments on behalf of their constituents, and who are making arguments on behalf of the drug companies or the insurance companies. And so, that approach, I think is what is going to allow people to stay involved in this process.”

Obviously, the President, the Speaker, and the Majority Leader decided it’s better if the American people don’t know who is or isn’t making arguments on their behalf. Of course, the reason for this lack of candor and openness has been painfully obvious – much of what the Democrats have put in the bill is highly controversial, including, but not limited to a government-run public option plan, drastic reduction in Medicare funding for Seniors, unfunded Medicaid expansion which will bankgrupt our states and a Byzantine network of Federal agencies staffed by bureaucrats that will make health care decisions on our behalf. All of which runs counter to the very simple thing that Americans are demanding from Congress – lower health care costs.

As the President’s first official State of the Union address looms, expect the White House to be heavily involved in trying to salvage political points from whatever results from the back groom horse-trading that is sure to go on during the early weeks of the new year.

The whole country is watching. The more they hide, the more the country gets to see how corrupt this whole enterprise is.

Let’s make sure everyone knows what they are doing.

Thank you Sen. DeMint

chbroussard (Diary) Thursday, January 7th at 1:22PM EDT (link)

Thank God for Sen. DeMint. He seems to be the only Senator with the resal desire to try to stop the monstrosity of a bill.

To my two Senators—Hutchison and Cornyn. Get off your rear ends and DO something. While I long ago gave up on either of you really stepping up to the plate and initiating anything worthwhile, and least I’d like to see you come out vocally in strong support of Sen. DeMint.

Ditto!!

drbob1988 Thursday, January 7th at 1:32PM EDT (link)

Sen.DeMint deserves our thanx for actually having the stones to do something to fight back. Where are the rest of the Republicans? This would be a great opportunity to show what you are really made of…..we are watching and taking notes!

Spot on my fellow Texan!

I’ve contacted both of these entrenched phonies on this subject and get nothing in response but canned email replies.

Of course, Cornyn isn’t vulnerable this year but kbh is. No leadership and she wants to return to Texas and be our governor?!?! Not gonna get my vote.

Just a suggestion, but I encourage all Texas readers to peruse www.medinafortexas.com

Throw the bums out!

Yep

chbroussard (Diary) Thursday, January 7th at 1:53PM EDT (link)

Ms. Hutchison has shown us what kind of Senator she is. And she thinks we want that kind of Governor? I don’t think so..

I agree...somewhat

zecabledude Thursday, January 7th at 2:28PM EDT (link)

I would much rather that Hutchison just retire. Having her as Governor is distasteful. But Perry really isn’t any better. He also is a phoney conservative. Not to mention a slimey LAND GRABBING insurance salesman.

I really wish we had an Electable conservative on the Governors Ballot.

Reinforcement

Again, may I repeat the recommendation to look at www.medinafortexas.com

She is largely being ignored by the msm. (not a member of the system) but is winning legal challenges to force that she be included in public debates.

imo, her candidacy is a real response to the grassroots/tea party movement and motivated to offer exactly what you say is what is needed.

There are those who say we “waste” our vote if it is not cast for someone we are told can win. I prefer to think that we “waste” our vote when we base it on anything but the principles of good government.

Fortunately we are having a real Primary so the party can’t force someone on us as the R’s did in NY-23.

Vote Medina

TxCon (Diary) Thursday, January 7th at 3:43PM EDT (link)

in the GOP primary!!!

Agree no good choice in Texas

gracie (Diary) Thursday, January 7th at 5:52PM EDT (link)

but if we have to use some form of state nullification think Perry would be stronger for Texas. Sorry but cannot support Medina…she seems more Libertarian…she wants to legalize marijuana and for some reason, wants to repeal our concealed carr y law.

Don't think so-

vrwcnut Tuesday, January 12th at 10:19PM EDT (link)

Just this weekend heard her speak and defend the right to carry- not just concealed but open carry like Arizona has.

Also supports 10th Amendment forbidding fed regulation of industry within the state so that something (firearms, ammo) produced and sold to remain within the state is not subject to fed regulation (registration/ confiscation).

Perry has put on a pretty face with the election nearing but he’s still soft on the border and was the champion of the Trans-Texas Corridor before it got shoved up his backside. No telling how he will morph after the election.

kbh- think bailout, tarp, not pro-life.

just my perspective on things-

Kay won't return to Texas...She'll lose the Primary and refuse to Resign as promised

AceInTX (Diary) Thursday, January 7th at 4:28PM EDT (link)

mark my words and call me on it if she resigns after losing the primary

But that’s the way I see it!

When is Kay "BailOut" up for re election?

izoneguy (Diary) Thursday, January 7th at 5:00PM EDT (link)

I mean if she does not resign “as promised”?

Those who had once simpered: “I don’t want to destroy the rich, I only want to seize a little of their surplus to help the poor, just a little, they’ll never miss it!” – then, later, had snapped: “The tycoons can stand being squeezed; they’ve amassed enough to last them for three generations” – then, later, had yelled: “Why should the people suffer while businessmen have reserves to last a year?” – now were screaming: “Why should we starve while some people have reserves to last a week?” – Atlas Shrugged

vanekl (Diary) Thursday, January 7th at 2:42PM EDT (link)

DeMint appears to be the only R that understands that you have to play offense. If you let the Ds play offense they will frame the bill and the opposition to their advantage, as they have successfully done.

I think that the whole thing is QUITE TRANSPARENT.

Cargosquid (Diary) Thursday, January 7th at 1:29PM EDT (link)

Its obvious to me what they are doing. We don’t need to see the actual bill or the negotiations to know that Pelosi and Reid are both corrupt hacks that will screw over their constituents. We know that both care nothing for their oaths of office. And we know that neither the Senate nor House will care what’s in the bill.

Now, Now.... Pelosi is not screwing over her constituents, rather -

yoyo (Diary) Thursday, January 7th at 3:09PM EDT (link)

She represents her constituency VERY well. [Think: Gavin Newsome]

But as SPEAKER of the representatives of all the OTHER constituents, she fails MISERABLY.

Here's what will happen at the SOTU

scipio62 (Diary) Thursday, January 7th at 1:30PM EDT (link)

Great piece.

I’m with chbroussard, thank God for Jim DeMint.

Here’s an outline of Obama’s SOTU, bank on it:

1. Blame Bush
2. Blame Congressional Republicans
3. Praise Congressional Democrats
4. Take credit for accomplishments that aren’t his, like his phony-baloney Nobel “Peace” Prize

A just war leads to a just peace and freedom. An unjust peace leads to death.

Cross-posted at Scipio the Metalcon.

Wouldn't there have to be accomplishments

Cargosquid (Diary) Thursday, January 7th at 4:59PM EDT (link)

that he COULD take credit for?

I see none.

I just called Bill Nelson's office

RedBeard Thursday, January 7th at 1:32PM EDT (link)

I asked if the senator had taken a public position on the secret negotiations, and was told that he had not. I then suggested that the senator might partially redeem himself, after his wrongheaded vote in favor of Obamacare, by coming out opposed to such dirty and downright un-American dealings.

The staffer seemed very, very familiar with my suggestions, as if he’s heard them a few thousand times already. I hope that’s the case, and that every other Floridian will call with the same message.

Next call is to Charlie Crist Lite, otherwise known as George LeMieux, asking why he isn’t standing on the steps of the capitol decrying the secret meetings.

Standard-bearer for grouchy curmudgeonry since, oh, 1975 or so.

That guy heard the same thing from me...

jmimac351 Thursday, January 7th at 8:18PM EDT (link)

Nelson’s phonebot heard the same thing from me. I think he’s beginning to recognize my voice.

And here I thought

jmimac351 Thursday, January 7th at 8:24PM EDT (link)

I thought I was the only guy in Florida given Nelson’s office a rash. The DC office normally goes to VM with no other option. One thing I have noticed is the local office in Orlando are usually busy. I call about twice a week and it’s always busy. The woman answering the phone in Orlando seems like she is tired of being pummeled by conservatives. “I can’t asnwer that, Sir.” Excuse me? You can’t answer whether Senator Bill Nelson supports making these negotiations public? Why is that even a question.

“I can’t answer that, Sir, but I will pass along your thoughts.”

Pass along this, Jeb Bush is going to walk Bill Nelson like a dog in 2012.

A great bill for America...

neoavatara (Diary) Thursday, January 7th at 1:41PM EDT (link)

…but they can’t talk about it in public.

Look, Democrats can pass this if they want, in secret and behind closed doors. That is just a fact. But we as conservatives need to show the public the ugliness of the entire process…a bill that effects 1/6th of the economy and every American, and yet cannot be debated in a public forum.

That they lie is of no great shock or surprise to those on the right.

USNJIMRET (Diary) Thursday, January 7th at 1:44PM EDT (link)

That those on the left, not the players themselves, but the rank and file lefty or left leaner, continue to accept the lies and tap dancing…..most disturbing.
Then again, snake oil sellers have prospered for generations by always telling/selling the same hope and dream to a willingly blind audience. Said audience, once presented by the unarguable FACT that the snake oil really won’t cure Grandma’s blindness, simply awaits the next ‘explanation’ of how the fault isn’t the snake oil, but somehow the blame falls on the guy who made the bottle. Or the company that transported the bottle. Or the design of the bottle. Or anything, anything at all, except the FACT that the audience willingly accepted a lie, a lie that three functioning brain cells would have told them was a lie.
So the snake oil seller changes the packaging, and now sells “New, improved, Snake Oil Capsules”!!
And the audience willingly buys the lie, again.

Notice how

Kudos to Sen. DeMint ...

Timothy Morella Thursday, January 7th at 2:03PM EDT (link)

… for having the guts to do this!

I seem to recall a posting here as this being the first step toward killing the bill. I was really hoping for Sen. McConnell to do this, but his comments regarding repeal of this potential legislation concerned me tremendously (he seems to be more concerned with his “friendship” with Sen. Reid – of which Reid is exploiting – than he is about principles and the Constitution).

I am so glad and grateful for Sen. DeMint’s actions. God bless that man!

Thank You Jum DeMint and all Republicans that have fought the CHOP SHOP mentality of reid, pelosi and obama

in this foney fraudulent obamacare. We still don’t want the best healthcare in the World destroyed by obamacare that doesn’t fixed anything but will cost every citizen/voter/taxpayer more money for healthcare.
It is time to KILL obamacare and come back after we purge the Senate and Congress in November with real healthcare modification and improvements not DESTROY IT.

I posted this at another diary, but it fits here too.

Picture this:

Locked door, behind which the Dems are planning the “bill.”

Camera on door.

DeMint walks up, sledge hammer in hand.

“Knock knock.”

Looks in at the Dems and asks, “Were you actually planning on keeping us out, the Representives of almost HALF of the country and doing this in secret?”

Drops hammer and walks in…..WITH THE CAMERA.

“What? The camera? I have nothing to hide……”

Oh that is good. nt

sadly, the bill still passes . . .

denniswayne Thursday, January 7th at 4:03PM EDT (link)

I strongly supported DeMint’s move – the strategy was recommended here. However, it appears now that there will be no conference – Reid, Pelosi, and Emmanuel will finish it behind closed doors, then it’s an up/down in the House and then the same in the Senate. With zero transparency of course, as Gibbs dodges over The One’s repeated lie about C-Span coverage.

HC strategery question for Dan

SoFiMil (Diary) Thursday, January 7th at 4:25PM EDT (link)

As noted in Rick’s diary, very little has been said in the MSM regarding Demint’s original objection to the appointment of conferees. Are Reid and Pelosi taking this aggressive tactic to make it appear that the Democrats are in control of the process in order to encourage the perception that if the Democrats “initiated” this strategy (albeit with secret meetings), it must mean the final passage is inevitable. In other words, if the Democrats had complained about Demint’s objection, would this have given the perception that there was a good chance that this bill will be killed?

You think the American people won’t like what you’re up to? One shudders to think what is going on behind closed doors while they try to “negotiate” this thing. I see them sitting around, smoking cigars, trying to outdo each other on who can come up with a better plan to screw over the American public. CSPAN would really like to see what’s going on, and so would I, especially with my two senators, Burris and Durbin.
