NYT: Romney Bused In College Students To Boost CPAC Straw Poll Showing

First of all, I don’t really care about the CPAC Straw Poll results. If it was relevant, Ron Paul would have been considered the GOP front runner over the past two years, and Mitt Romney would have won the nomination in 2008. It’s good for a small amount of buzz for a day or two, but that’s about it. I suspect most voters don’t even know what CPAC is, and those who are familiar with the annual conservative conference know how the straw poll is won.

According to the New York Times Caucus Blog, the Romney campaign bused students in from colleges on the Eastern Seaboard to ensure that he had enough supporters there to enable his victory in the straw poll.

…Straw polls indicate very little. The voting pool is affected by who attends the conference — 44 percent of voters were students — and by special efforts campaigns can make to bring in supporters for the vote. In each of the last two years, Mr. Paul was the victor, but others said this was more a mark of his campaign’s organizational ability than its true support…

….The Romney campaign also worked aggressively behind the scenes for a strong showing, including busing students from colleges along the Eastern Seaboard to show their support….

Do I care? Not really. This is all well within the rules of the game, but let’s not pretend that this is some “severely” impressive display of the strength of Mitt Romney with conservatives.

They were surprised by the outcome since the buzz was all about Santorum throughout the conference. They waited in line nearly 3 hours to meet him (during Romney’s speech) as did hundreds of others. I thought they were pulling my leg when they told me that college kids were buying up sweater vests at $25/each and proudly sporting them,, but they assured me it was true.

Something I didn’t catch while watching on TV: When the results of the straw poll were announced, the Platinum attendees ($3500/ticket) seated in the center of the ballroom stood and cheered while others in the ballroom booed. You can draw you own conclusions.

If Romney really believed he were a true (“severe”) conservative, he would not have felt that he needed bus loads of dones to prove his point. His predictable, “money CAN buy me love” stunt only proves how insecure he really is with the whole concept of conservatism and how desperate he is to “win” at all cost. Can somebody please break this to Fox Noise???

They’re apparently spreading the simplistic notion that the conservatives must approve of Romney since he won the CPAC straw poll “after all.” I’m sure they’re not dumb enough to actually believe this themselves, but what’s a little fudge job for their de facto nominee???

They will continue to make CERTAIN that any public forum will have LOTS of Romney cheering supporters – just like they did at the FL debates and now CPAC.
Sabato just called that “good organization” on Fox.
It feels like fraud to me.

you inevitably have to “muscle” your way to a win. That, at least, is the mentality at the Boston HQ. I’m surprised that they don’t actually go around threatening to break kneecaps, because thuggery is exactly what that is, despite what “Professuh” Larry Sabato chooses to call it.

supporters to CPAC? A hallow victory that breeds more distrust.
