Without Rubio On The Ticket, Romney Cannot Win

Pew Research  has done a great job of summarizing the growing influence of the Hispanic vote.

The bad news (from an electoral standpoint) is that this heavily Democrat leaning segment of the electorate is growing at an alarming rate in several swing states.

The good news is that Bush proved that a downward trend of Hispanic support for Republican candidates can be reversed.

Here is some pertinent data based on national and state exit polls:

*In 2008, Obama won the Hispanic vote 67-31.

*In 2004, Bush carried 40% of the Hispanic vote – a modern high for a Republican presidential candidate.

*In 1996, Dole captured only 21% of the Hispanic vote.

*Nationwide, 9% of the electorate was Hispanic in 2008 – up 1% from 2004.

*The 2008 Hispanic vote was up significantly from 2004 in the swing states of New Mexico (9%), Colorado (5%) and Nevada (5%).

*In Florida, Obama carried 57% of the Hispanic vote in 2008, despite the fact that 56% voted for Bush in 2004.

Despite receiving a historically high level of Hispanic support in 2004, Bush won the election by the skin of his teeth. Since McCain wasn’t able to even come close to those levels despite his amnesty push preceding the election, pandering doesn’t seem to be all that effective.

Looking at the data, I’m not sure how a Republican can win a general election without 35-40% of the Hispanic vote. Republican strategists know this all too well. I’ll go on record right now predicting that Marco Rubio will be asked to be the VP nominee. Whether or not he will accept is another story altogether.

Here is what he had to say on Friday:

“I’m not going to be the vice president. I’m not,” he said, the second such announcement this month.

“Marco has said repeatedly that he’s not going to be vice president, and all of the speculation in the world isn’t going to change that fact,” senior Rubio advisor Todd Harris added.

There are two possibilities. He either sincerely doesn’t want the job, or he’s trying to delay the inevitable smear campaign from the left. If it’s the former, the campaign to remove Obama will be a tough road. According to a recent Fox News poll, Obama currently leads Romney 70-14 among Hispanics. If Rubio doesn’t accept, it will likely ensure another four years of Obama.

GOP needs to find itself a conservative Hispanic with gravitas.

  • Ann_W

She looks great from what I read about her. But what’s the scoop, would she be a good candidate?

  • checkmate2012

and I expect him to be prez someday but not a VP. The polls show (as I quoted) that pandering to Hispanic voters just for the sake won’t get votes for our side. I agree with Ennenko that Romney should be talking about legal immigrants and not just illegals.

which clearly stated that Rubio as VP woud not change their mind. This was about 2 months ago and they show actually questions and responses. The poll showed that w/Rubio as VP was not game changer. If you read all the ?s (and it was a long poll), they really are all over the map, meaning they don’t like the direction of the country but yet they unanimously vote for BO. Republicans must do a better job of getting these good people on our side.

Personally, I don’t want Rubio to be the VP pick b/c he’s way more effective in the Senate where we need him (and #’s) and I expect him to be prez in my lifetime. No reason to take a chance on second best.

  • rightwingnut2

…but Rubio offers the best opportunity to change their minds. One way or another, Romney needs 35-40% of the Hispanic vote to have a chance. Any suggestons?

  • checkmate2012

but first I’d say that he needs people in the street that really do care about things that matter to Hispanic voters. And I don’t see a difference b/w their plight or blacks, or whites, etc.

We’re in a mess as all Americans and BO won’t make it better; that’s the message.

So I really did write to Romney to say that he should pick Louis Furturo as his VP pick. Check out Stossel on Fox from about 6 months ago- the guy is a fearless economic rockstar!

  • rightwingnut2

I’m not knocking Forturo. I actually don’t know much about him,, but that would likely accelerate statehood for Puerto Rico, which comes at the hefty price of two more Democrats in the Senate.

  • checkmate2012

agree. So you don’t like Furturo?

  • ennaneko

He’s the guy that unseated the socialists that turned Spain on its belly after Aznar.

European lefties really hate him. The guy has a neckbeard and carries himself with real gravitas. ;)

GOP needs to find themselves a Hispanic that commands respect, not someone that will be seen as a token dude with a Spanish surname. Also, someone that is strongly conservative and can get Hispanic people who have inclinations to vote on their right wing views to do so.

  • checkmate2012

How is it that commonwealths can vote in the primary and not the general? I think D.C. i the same way. It’s stupid and a way to get useless delegates.

To participate in the primary but disallowed to vote in the general. is disingenuous and the effect is that by the time the primary comes south and west w/the most delegates per state (i.e. TX & CA) it’s a meaningless vote.

But the point is Luis Fortu

  • ennaneko

he’s not conservative enough for Americans but he upsets lefties in his country enough

  • checkmate2012

Had it been France, Germany, Greece, so I plead stupid. Seems we are on the same path as to get a real conservative Hispanic on the ticket and not in name only. What do you think about Governor Luis Fortu

  • ennaneko

I just looked up stuff about him. He’s the governor of Puerto Rico. He doesn’t get much national attention. Don’t really have an opinion about him since I don’t know much about him.

The last two presidents have chosen “elder statesmen.” This may become a trend.

Romney could be helped by someone who doesn’t have many plans past 2016 or 2020 and can take a more active role in promoting his agenda.

  • checkmate2012

indicator as in Biden. Bush and Cheney to be sure but it was fresh after 9/11 and they kept us safe. To your point, who is the best spokesman to get Hispanic votes? And look up Stossel in your spare time as he pulled a 180 in Puerto Rico analagous to Gov. Scott Walker! It wasn’t pretty but it is working for all in the end.

  • ennaneko

He was born in Puerto Rico. Any chance Dems or others make an issue of it?

  • checkmate2012

his state around against unsurmountable odds as in the state and union workers- they hate him! I’ve done the research and as a citizen of P.R. he can run for prez. I would not have made such a far out VP pick had he not been eliglible.

  • checkmate2012

we need to get young votes and hispanic votes that will put
a minus column in BO’s, both votes he got majorities the last
time and is courting heavily again.

  • ennaneko

American Hispanics, particularly American born ones are taken for granted. No one speaks to them.

It’s illegal immigration all the time. Where do “legal” Hispanics fit? Do they mean anything? Do they matter?

Why is everyone talking about illegal Hispanics? Are they more important than the ones that can vote?

How does giving an illegal Hispanic a green card or ignoring their legal status help a Hispanic citizen on the personal level?

Republicans really need Hispanic activists and politicians that promote ideas and not just bend to the way left wing activists are conditioning a lot of Hispanics to think. From where I’m from the liberals prop up leaders and activists who promote the idea that Hispanics are victims and the entire Hispanic community has to focus on illegal immigration and race.

  • checkmate2012

we need feet on the ground. And I do like your focus on legal Americans that are Hispanic vs., illegal immigrants and believe that Reps should prove how new economic policies that will work for all. Demos use the class warfare better then anyone and I think people can see thru that crap…I guess my glasses are rosy.

  • krish

otherwise he will forever lose his credibility among conservaties! Most of Romney’s liberal/moderate positions will not jive with Rubio’s conservative positions….he will be asked to defend them & will come across as a hypocrite!

Let us not waste a potential POTUS with a moderate like Romney….

Ideally, I would like to see Rubio as the Majority leader in Senate & may be Pual Ryan (have some reservations about him —supporting RINO Boehner all time!) as the speaker!

Christie should do the trick if republican ticket loses, we can get rid of two blue state moderate republicans in one shot!!

We have an awesome roster of Governors from Midwest & South that are Stars of the republican party & are also consistently conservative!!

  • http://www.rightspeak.net/search/label/-Right%20Wingnut rightwingnut2

…other than the reasons laid out in my post, is that he would be able to articulate conservatism to Hispanics in a way that Romney can’t. My hope is that would negate much of the need to pander for their votes by offering up some type of amnesty program.
