Obama Campaign Warns GOP Against Selecting Rubio For VP

Despite spearheading the effort to grant amnesty to millions of illegals in 2006, John McCain lost the Hispanic vote by a margin of 67-31 in 2008. That’s a far cry from the 40% that George W. Bush received in his narrow victory in 2004. Last week, I wrote about the rapid growth of the Hispanic population in a number of crucial swing states. I concluded that the GOP nominee will need a minimum of 35-40% of the Hispanic vote to be competitive in November, and that Marco Rubio offers the best opportunity to get there.

There’s been a lot of buzz lately about recent polling that shows that a Hispanic VP nominee does not help the GOP make up ground with Hispanic voters. Just last week, Public Policy Poling (D) and Project New America teamed up to poll Hispanics in several swing states with large numbers of Hispanic voters.

Recent polling from Project New America and Public Policy Polling suggests that selecting a Hispanic running mate is unlikely to help Republican presidential frontrunner Mitt Romney close the considerable gap he faces with Hispanic voters in a general election.

The polling, conducted from April 16-18 among Hispanic likely voters in Florida, Nevada and New Mexico shows President Obama with a sizable lead over Romney in each of these battleground states…..

After reading that, it’s understandable that so many would be skeptical of the viability of a GOP nominee / Rubio ticket – especially those who have had reservations in the past.

Public Policy Polling is a well known Democrat pollster, who routinely does polling for Daily Kos and SEIU. Until I read this particular poll, I had not heard of the newest member of their team – Project New America, so I decided to do a little digging. They don’t even pretend to be anything other than a liberal think tank. In fact, David Axelrod’s son is the Director of Communications.

Ethan Axelrod
Director of Communications Ethan manages the PNA’s social media operations, shapes media relations and develops content for subscribers. Prior to joining Project New America in May, 2011, Ethan worked for two years as Editor of the Denver section of the Huffington Post, where he wrote about local and regional politics, among other topics. He also worked in the Media Logistics department at the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, where he was part of the team that accommodated the needs of thousands of media members who covered the convention.

Their entire staff is made up exclusively of Democrat strategists and left-wing activists. See for yourself here.

It’s awfully nice of the Obama campaign to warn the GOP against nominating Marco Rubio for VP, don’t you think?

        warn against Rubio as VP?

create the narrative that a Hispanic VP candidate will not help with Hipanic voters. It seems to be working. We all know they’re talking about Rubio.

            n/t

I was just being creative with the title.

  • renny

Would that they opened that can of worms.

      …are already doing that.

on his own website, and yes his parents were Cuban immigrants but he’s a natural born citizen. How can they dispute that?

        • http://www.rightspeak.net/search/label/-Right%20Wingnut rightwingnut2

Since his parents were not citizens, that he’s not eligible. I’ve debated this with Rubio birthers, and concluded that it’s a waste of time. We both dig up the same Supreme Court cases that say nothing about a requirement for the parents to be citizens, yet the Rubio birthers come up with interpretations that make absolutely no sense.

Trivia question: Who was the first president who was born a citizen of the United States?

          • garfieldjl

You are a natural born citizen if you are born on US soil.

          • checkmate2012

“A Patriots Historyof the United States” book! And it’s heavy too!

          • garfieldjl

Anyways the case had to do with a man whom was the child of two Chinese Immigrants whom was born in the US back in the late 1800s, he went to visit family in China and when he came back the US Gov. tried to deport him. The case eventually wound up in the US supreme court, which ruled the man was a Natural Born United States Citizen.

Are the two late 19th century cases dealing with children of Chinese parents who were born on US soil while their parents were ineligible to be US citizens. In both cases the decisions refer to them as ‘natural-born citizens’.

          • http://www.rightspeak.net/search/label/-Right%20Wingnut rightwingnut2

They some how use that one, and others, to make their case. They’re nuts.

          • checkmate2012

            Correct?

          • http://www.rightspeak.net/search/label/-Right%20Wingnut rightwingnut2

The first seven presidents were born British subjects.

          • lapert

van Buren was the first born after the declaration of independence but Tyler was the first born after the Constitution and the phrasing used in Article II refers to a natural born citizen or US citizen at the time of adoption of the Constitution. So van Buren was eligible because he was a citizen at the adoption and Tyler was the first who was eligible by being a natural born citizen.

    Don’t you?

were conducted by left wing groups, I don’t pay any attention to them.

    • http://www.rightspeak.net/search/label/-Right%20Wingnut rightwingnut2

in this case, it’s not just ANY left wing group…..David Axelrod’s son!

Do you think they would have released the poll had it shown that a Hispanic VP candidate helped the GOP ticket?

However, I do expect the VP nominee to carry the message and reach people who might otherwise be hesitant.

I also expect the VP will be lambasted for being inferior in some way. The democrats will try and make any selection a wedge issue, and if it is Rubio I expect the democrats to go forward with a Cuban version of Uncle Tom to attack anyone that supports him.

But the important thing about Rubio is he is a great communicator. He has style, mastery of the subject, humor and the most important characteristic, experience. He has everything needed to carry the message. Regardless of who is VP choice.

Democrats offer tokens, but no real substance that will improve the lives of the Americans here that are descended from Mexican, Cuban, Puerto Rican or other central American ancestry. What will improve their lot is a strong, growing and dynamic economy, an economic model that the progressive controlled Democrat party cannot embrace.

The Progressives are good at destroying their opponents, but the recent attempts the administration have grown repugnant. Attacks on Rubio could backfire. The most important thing is letting Marco Rubio carry the message. Give him a key role where ever he will contribute. Select him because he is the best of the young contributors not because of his ethnicity.

And if Marco Rubio is the VP nomination, focus on his style, message and the great contributions he has to offer to a right of center country. Forget the check box idea, it will backfire.
