Romney Requires Delegates To Sign A Loyalty Pledge For Handshake And Photo

It’s no secret that a significant portion of the GOP base has reservations about Mitt Romney’s commitment to the conservative principles he has espoused throughout the battle for the party’s nomination. Considering that he likely has the nomination sewn up, you would think that a gathering of GOP delegates, RNC members, and state GOP chairmen would present the perfect opportunity for Mitt to win over some of the skeptics.

Attendees were given the opportunity to meet Romney in private on one condition. They had to sign a “loyalty pledge” first, promising to support him at the RNC convention. This is another prime example of the Romney campaign’s “tin ear” that Erick Erickson wrote about.

CNN’s Peter Hamby reports:

Members of the Republican National Committee gathering in Arizona were invited to meet with Mitt Romney in private Friday and have their pictures taken with the presumptive GOP nominee, but there was a price of admission: loyalty.

RNC members and state GOP chairmen were welcomed into the private reception only after signing a form pledging to support Romney as a delegate to the national convention in Tampa…..

Not surprisingly, this didn’t sit well with many of the attendees.

….Not everyone was allowed to join in the fun.

All three members of Iowa’s conservative RNC delegation – party chairman A.J. Spiker and committee members Steve Scheffler and Kim Lehman – attempted to enter the reception but were rebuffed after refusing to sign the delegate pledge.

The dispute became heated in the hallway outside, with the Iowans demanding to know why they had to sign a form to get their picture taken with the former Massachusetts governor…..

This is yet more evidence that he will take conservatives for granted even more than he already has, unless we make him earn our votes.

Reminds me of the shannigans in Virginia, wasn’t there something about having to sign a loyalty oath to vote in the Primary.

…requiring people to sign a loyalty pledge to meet her?

This is just plain dumb politics. These are the people he needs to win over if he is to have a chance in hell of winning in November.

Palin would never try to emulate a Chicago Politician.

Let’s stop pretending Sarah has the answers to this country’s ills. We need to unite as a party.

        • garfieldjl

Btw, money for a picture taken with someone, is one thing.

A pledge of loyalty for one’s vote is something entirely different.

The chairman of Kent County’s Republican Party says he’s switching his support from Mitt Romney to Newt Gingrich.

Hans Reigle on Friday said he was throwing his support to the former House speaker because he “is the only candidate who has shown a willingness to meet and talk with Delaware voters for more than an hour.”……

It’s just another “tin ear” example. He blew off Deleware. No big deal for the general.

However, blowing off the Iowa GOP chairman because he wouldn’t sign a loyalty pledge is a bit of a problem.

          Ron Pauls left.
Is he you man now to cover your Romney hate?

          • http://www.rightspeak.net/search/label/-Right%20Wingnut rightwingnut2

I’m not going to get in to one of those back and forth bickering sessions about this. I’ve stated my position on Romney. He has a good chance to earn my vote. We’ll see how it goes.

            I don’t “hate” Mitt. I DO hate Obama…..so, there is that. ;)

          • gekster

Just a simple answer would suffice.

          • http://www.rightspeak.net/search/label/-Right%20Wingnut rightwingnut2

            no.

I’m not going to be out bashing Mitt about RomneyCare, and all of his flip flops, etc., but like Erick, I don’t have a problem addressing these “tin ear” moments, because they have the potential to impact the outcome of the election.

          • gekster

I’ll cross you off the Romney hate team and
put you on the disatisfied team.

garfield won’t like it, but who care about a sorry ass.

  • clintonformccain

Romney is going to scratch the backs of those who commit to support him. If you are a Republican poobah and you want your back scratched, it’s time to get onboard the train.

  • snowshooze

And Kent County did mutiny. In Romneyworld.
The man has no common sense. He is supposed to be galvanizing his support, not alienating it.
He should be in Delaware leading the charge and giving the troops what they come for.

    • clintonformccain

is three fries short of a happy meal.

You are supposed to jump off the bandwagon of the fella who is losin’ and jump onto the bandwagon of the fella who is winnin’. Apparently this guy in Delaware is all confused. Maybe he was drinkin/. Maybe he’s a C. O’Donnell supporter? I dunno.

      • snowshooze

        Really.
That is a GOP Chair, and I would think he has a much higher level of devotion to the party than most.

  • clintonformccain

Stricker was the paid Vice-Chair of Ron Paul’s Iowa campaign. Scheffller is President of the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition. And, Lehman’s claim to fame was her statement in 2010 that Obama told Muslims he was a Muslim, setting off a firestorm of media about the crazies.

If none of these three were prepared to be Romney delegates at the Convention, why would Romney want to waste his time with them? He was in Arizona to lock down delegate commitments.

    • garfieldjl

I don’t care who they were, making people sign loyalty oaths for votes isn’t ethical.

In the general election situation it is actually a Federal Crime.

      • clintonformccain

It’s a pledged delegate commitment for the Republican Convention. As you keep reminding us, Romney still has to get to 1144. This was apparently a private meet and greet for Romney and his pledged delegates. Why would Ron Paul’s Iowa campaign chair and the president of an organization who actively worked against Romney expect to be a part of that?

They were, of course, happy to create a ruckus for CNN to hit Romney over the head with.

        • Martin Knight

He has a deep personal visceral hatred for Mitt Romney, y’know.

        • garfieldjl

As stated in the diary, these individuals had to sign a pledge of support for Romney in order to be in the private reception.

That by definition is a loyalty oath.

Take off the Romney hate glasses and you can easily see the point.

    • http://www.rightspeak.net/search/label/-Right%20Wingnut rightwingnut2

Regardless of who he supported in the caucus, Mitt will need him to rally the troops in November.

Should Mitt just write off all of the 60% of the primary voters who supported a candidate other than him?

      • clintonformccain

people who are still committed to other Republican candidates. Yes, it’s time to get on the train.

        • snowshooze

He will still get a few of those aboard the other tickets.
And if he is finally Nominated he will consolidate.

  • clintonformccain

    The Iowa Republican

…to try to earn some good will. If it didn’t work, nothing would be lost.

Now….Spiker will go back and tell his fellow GOPers all about how he was dissed by Mitt Romney.

      • clintonformccain

He did not get into the private reception for pledged delegates. That’s where he made a scene trying to get in. About 100 of the 165 super delegates were at the reception. They had the option of pledging with a public endorsement or privately.

So King Mittens has a Loyalty Oath. What’s next– an Act of Supremacy and burning at the stake for those delegates who refuse to recognize his majesty?
