Romney Needs To Thoroughly Vet VP Pick To Avoid 2008 Disaster

Now that Mitt Romney has the GOP nomination sewn up, the debate over who the VP nominee should be is heating up. Will Romney pick a young rising star, like Florida Senator, Marco Rubio? Or, will he pick an experienced DC insider, like Ohio Senator, Rob Portman.

One thing is for certain. Mitt Romney will not make the same mistake that a certain presidential candidate made in 2008. A thorough vetting will be of utmost importance this time around.

Here’s what can happen if Romney isn’t careful with the pick….

Or….

Or….

You get the idea. There’s plenty more where that came from. Don’t make the same mistake, Mitt!

Your diary on the rec list clearly indicates Palin was well vetted and well qualified to run as V.P.

In this diary, you appear to take the opposite position.

Am most interested in your true view.

        Biden, not Palin.

The biggest problem in 2008 was that Palin didn’t properly vett that guy at the top of her ticket. I fear we’ll make the same mistake this year. Most of the people being considered for the VP slot are outstanding. It’s that guy being proposed for the top of the ticket that has me quite concerned.

    1. The problem with Sarah Palin was nothing against her personally, but she was a bad pick because of the narrative McCain needed to paint against Obama, was that this guy has no experience and is a complete joke in terms of his qualifications to be President of the United States.

    2. The problem with the guy on the top of the ticket is that he really had no vision, no plan and no ability to communicate or articulate anything.
The debate where he referenced Joe the Plumber like 15 times was painful to watch.

    3. The brand in general was damaged with Indy’s and Moderates, and the guy at the top of the ticket was damaged with conservatives. That is not a good recipe for victory.

    4. Money – Republicans were badly outspent. Go look at where Obama won those close victories in traditional Republican states like NC or Indiana and the money spent on TV ads there was 20-1. Bad Brand, Bad Candidate who lost his trump card with VP pick and outspent 10 or 20 to 1 in TV ads, not going to end well for that candidate.

I actually thought that if McCain wanted to win the White House, he had really one shot with regards to his VP pick, not that this would of been my choice, but I think the narrative to the Indy voters who show up and pay attention about 10 minutes every four years might of been effective, and the double down on experience would of been a blow to Obama. The choice would of been Lieberman, and the narrative would of been some sort of bipartisan Washington clean up movement, not to mention Obama’s lack of experience.

With regards to Mitt, have to say I really liked a lot of the guys on the bench, not to mention Newt, Santorum and Perry much better, but at this point, he is what he is. I like Marco Rubio a lot, might seem too obvious, but would probably be among my first choice. I like John Thune a lot too for the VP spot, think he would be a perfect VP choice, just not sure he brings much in swinging that last 3 to 4% you need to win this thing, especially since our guy at the top of the ticket I also think lacks the “it” factor.

This didn’t go over as planned. Some read it, and thought I was talking about Palin.

By the way, Palin has 20 yrs of exec. experience. Obama had zip until he got elected.

Having a guy who is clueless on the economy was a big mistake, we lost the election the day lehman went BK.

At least Romney would have been a credible economy fixer alternative. Porblably would have lost anyway but not as badly.
