No Cadillac for You

Even though the government and its friends in the United Auto Workers now own General Motors, the class warrior in Obama just can’t stop thinking of “Cadillac people” as The Enemy. In a PBS interview last week, President Obama talked of "penalizing insurance companies who are offering super, gold-plated, Cadillac plans." Ditto the Democrats in Congress. Kent Conrad (D-ND) is among those on the Senate Budget Committee who "would tax companies that offer Cadillac plans." On Face the Nation Sunday, Rep. Jim Cooper (D-TN) said that a surtax on so-called "Cadillac" insurance plans might be something that the Blue Dogs could support.

OK, so what’s the message here? The first is that there is something that, as the Texans say, “needs penalizing” about buying or selling Cadillacs. The second is that people who buy or sell Cadillacs will be penalized. And the third is that Democrats from the White House on down really don’t want anyone actually having a Cadillac, or being in the business of selling them. One wonders whether any of this rhetoric has been cleared with the Car Czar.

So far the Democrats are not threatening to tax the Lexus plans. And a good thing, too. If our politicians are going to refer to super, gold-plated stuff — even to demonize it and penalize people for having any of it — they should at least promote our own.

Yesterday, Senator John Kerry said his plan to tax "Cadillac" health benefits is gaining support. Makes you want to run right out and buy a Cadillac, doesn’t it?

I’m having trouble wrapping my head around the comments. If the complaint is against ‘Cadillac’ health care, does this mean that those Lucky Unstiffs (Lucky Stiffs == dead?) are stealing health care from somebody?

Naah, this is just envy. You have too much health care, we have to draw you back to the pack! Remember, that in places like GB, as I recall, you aren’t allowed to buy additional health care.

I remember a book a few years back by Ron Sider, “Rich Christians in an age of hunger”. Such a dope that an effective rebuttal was soon published by Dave Chilton, “Productive Christians in an age of guilt manipulators”. This fits right in there.

Those “Cadillac” plans are not what Obama or the Dems think that they are. These are insurance plans whose premiums are well above what is more usual and customary, and who owns them?

The owners of these “Cadillac” plans turn out to generally be the elderly who have medical problems, and are paying for their own insurance. They have pre-existing conditions, they are not eligible generally under the usual run-of-the-mill group plans, so they have to purchase them on their own. Such things are costly, but these folks prefer paying those premiums vs. having to impoverish themselves in order to qualify for Medicare or Medicade.

Tax these plans?? Lovely. Hey, Obama, let’s drive these people out of their chosen insurances. Let’s add to the ranks of the uninsured. Let’s make another lie about how Obama-care lets folks keep their current insurance.

    Let’s talk about “acting stupid.”

It would be nice if Obama and his enablers actually learned what they are talking about before shooting off about something. What a fool.

…What about the Bentley plan the Lords and Ladies of Congress treat themselves to? Will that be hit with a surtax?

That no one is coming out of the recession either?

you’re a “male from Europe”. Is “looking for new taxes” just an ingrained reflexive response for you when seeking a fix for an ailing economy?

  • JSobieski

While government and unproductive individuals have automatic license to ask for more no matter what based on “need”?

Modern liberablism is just a spoiled teenager—a description that fits much of Europe (or at least Old Europe).

My Polish uncle asked my mom the other day if she was planning on returning to Poland. . .

are barking mad and completely out of touch with reality. What’s worse, when they are together, their madness multiplies exponentially. For our own safety we would do well to post guards all around Washington D.C. during the August break, and prevent every one of them from ever returning.

for fear it will hurt the pig farmers, but have not problem dropping the Cadillac-bomb and decimating the auto industry. It’ s a new era when a Cadillac is considered a “clunker”, while a Prius is a prized possession.
