A Modest “Proposal”

The process of electing the anti-Romney is almost complete!

As the winnowing process has proceeded [alas, with both bumps-along-the-road and lingering-regrets], The Newt has accepted endorsements from Perry [who will head-honcho his Federalism initiative] and from Cain [who will focus on his economic/jobs policies].  This has allowed for “past sins/oversights” to be undermined behaviorally; to whatever degree is he was Big-Government oriented, or to whatever degree he was focusing as a lobbyist/historian, he now can project an approacch that would encompass the fundamentals of these two former-POTUS candidate/competitors…and of their supporters.

Meanwhile, in the shadows, Santorum has emerged as the “true conservative”…per anointment via the MSM/LSM/ELM ["Establishment-Leaning" Media].  He certainly has major faults [detailed elsewhere on this Diary] but, ultimately, this presents the final link in the chain, one that would unite all sub-facets of the party [eschewing Paul and his anti-"American Exceptionalism" foreign policy].  How might this be accomplished?

The Newt and Santorum are, per both parties, long-term friends.  One argues he is “senior” and the other argues he is “untainted.”  this can be perceived as a stand-off posture that, itself, can be presented to the GOP-electorate for a plebiscite.  Excluding all that Mitt projects, as the “class-warfare” argument continues to rage, would not adversely affect this model.

It would be shocking and would provide many people considerable surcease…were The Newt and Santorum to announce a “marital” relationship.  They could simply agree to abide by the [un-impassioned] votes of the entire GOP-POTUS primary-electorate.  Whomever gets more delegates would win those of the other, with the “ticket” completed by the guy who “places.”  [No one would lament that Mitt would merely have "showed."]

This would allow for the definable-deficiencies of each to be ameliorated behaviorally.  Complaints about the 3-wives are off-set by Perry’s reminder that the most religious people are forgiving…and by Santorum’s confirmation of this process.  Complaints about the lack of true-achievement are off-set by Cain’s reminder that Santorum shares his passions…and by Santorum’s confirmation of this acceptance.

[etc.]

Immediately, the healing process would transpire, and Mitt could again use the CPAC-podium to “suspend” [forever] his negativity, flip-flops, aloofness, and inability to articulate fundamental-conservatism.

The “ticket” could then demonstrate the ability to work in-concert and project an image of a government-in-waiting, comparable to that which Bush-’43 was doing in November/December of 2000 [while the appellate process was rising to the SCOTUS].  Although some might consider this to be a weakness [creating unnecessary vulnerabilities], a “Cabinet” of sorts [without czars] could be tentatively assembled, reflecting again the eagerness to get-started on 1/20/2013; these individuals would then become surrogates for a public-policy “platform” which would mesh with that which the GOP could adopt in August.

Because the GOP followed the D’s in ’08, it is my understanding that we go first this year, so we would probably not be able to “benefit” from knowledge of whether Hillary could replace Biden [as if this could carry great import on the Veep-choice, anyway]; her latest photo is certainly not flattering.

Regardless, the unprecedented nature of this effort [recalling only the choice by RR of Schweiker in '76] would become invigorating, recognizing that any needed disclaimer could be diffused by alluding to Lincoln’s “Team of Rivals.”

This would create friendly-competition, allow for continuing clarifications, and allow for Mitt to become the pariah he has allowed himself to become, by failing to make peace with [1]–The Conservative Base, [2]–The Evangelicals, and [3]–The TEA [Taxed Enough Already] Party Movement.

And this would unite the GOP prior to Debate #20, stumping the pundits and yet allowing for ongoing discussion focused upon which of the two should be the star-contender.

I just don't see it, Doc.

It’s a nice idea, but .. I really doubt either ego could sustain the thought of being second banana. I’ll rate this as similar to the hopes that Gingrich would announce support for Perry early on.

Great in theory; just not reflective of their respective personalities. That said, much of the Taxechusetts liberal’s “inevitability” factor has largely been a function of a self-fulfilling prophecy. Folks believed in it and have voted accordingly. I’m not sure “believing” our way to a Newt-Santorum alliance will be realistic for the aforementioned reasons, but the general pessimism we seem to have over Romney’s path toward the nomination has a definite way of reflecting on the votes and poll numbers. There is a definite bi-directional causation in the works that’s currently not working to our advantage.

Wuff!

The mechanics of the voting may make conservative competition destructive.

deVere Thursday, February 9th at 12:35PM EDT (link)

Depending on the rules in a particular state, the two conservatives each with 25% of the vote may watch Liberal Mitt take all or most of the delegates with 30%. (I don’t know how to categorize Paul). If we had preference voting, or strictly proportional delegate allocation, your idea might work better.

I think Newt is the smarter man with the better ideas, but Santorum is more electable. Santorum’s main electoral drawback, his extreme abortion position, is probably less important to women voters than Newt’s marital history.

I'm just trying to deal with all variables productively...

rsklaroff (Diary) Friday, February 10th at 3:14AM EDT (link)

…and to create a “healing” environment that would allow for Mitt’s destructiveness to become an outlier.

Concur, otherwise, with all facets of your critique; this mechanism would allow for The Newt to become the predominant force [without being edged-out of the competition, in the interim], as Santorum’s problems [listed elsewhere on my Diary] were to become more apparent.

Neither has insurmountable “issues,” but the point is that they are surprisingly complementary. The innovative nature of this proposal would flummox the MSM/LSM/ELM, and the “Lincoln-Douglas” nature of this budding interaction could prove enticing to everyone else.

This would confront Mitt with a “Meteor” which could prove unnerving; as I wrote a few weeks ago [within a different context], “all the king’s ENDORSEMENTS and all the king’s “SUPER-PAC”-$” couldn’t reassemble Mitt ‘Humpty-Dumpty” Romney…ever again!

Most important, here, would be an end to the “which is more Conservative” pseudo-debate [which rages @ RS and elsewhere] because it would focus upon future activities…drawing upon the positive aspects of their pasts. The public would “get to know them” over the months, a formidable challenge to the increasingly-marginalized Mitt-machine.

…because it would contrast with the sensation that we would be forced to accept Mitt.

Here, we would be better able ASAP to focus on BHO, and the “target” would be more difficult for his $1B-operation to marginalize/demonize.

This would also illustrate the urgent need to place all available resources into 2012, rather than allowing for anyone reasonable to rationalize delay until 2016. Just note, for example, the Ginsburg-quotes as illustrative of the need to control SCOTUS-appointments. And recognize how BHO continues to play-politics with every decision [including Iran].

Those who argue against Mitt must recognize that “you can’t beat someone with no one” and, once the conversation shifts to the two remaining alternatives [properly ignoring Paul, even as Perry notes his potential to contribute to an upcoming GOP-POTUS], it would then be possible to short-circuit debate that inevitably devolves.

This would also unite those who have been components of the “base” [Michele/Sarah], instantly creating a “team-approach” to focusing upon the D’s….

but: Newt proposed a truce between he and Santorum and Santorum blew him off, attacking him and Romney at every opportunity. Those were painful debates to see the Romney destructive machine and Santorum going after Newt, with much being fabrication or half truths.

Santorum is a definite Social Conservative, Newt is a fiscal conservative, and has become something of a social conservative. Romney is an opportunist at best, reading the wind to see which way it blows, telling us what he thinks we want to hear.

Santorum, could take place 2 and whip Joe Biden in VP debates, and Newt could whip BHO in the Presidential but I cannot see these two men reconciling anytime soon, even though it would be good for both the party and the country.

We will see, I hope and pray for some kind of a rapprochment between the two, but am not sure that it will happen. Both of them believe they are the savior of the country, as has been said by someone else about Obama, neither can take the place of Jesus.

So the problem right now is three fatally-flawed candidates, and the way we’re going to win anyway is by torpedoing the most flawed one by putting the other two still pretty majorly flawed ones on the same ticket together?? We all seem to be running around with our hair on fire because we don’t think any of Romney/Rubio, Gingrich/Rubio, or Santorum/Rubio will be able to beat BHO, so the solution is to go with Gingrich/Santorum so that at least the top of the ticket isn’t Romney?? That doesn’t make any sense…

Neutorum...per the WSJ...

rsklaroff (Diary) Friday, March 2nd at 2:53PM EDT (link)

…has been provided in today’s “Political Journal”:

A Gingrich-Santorum Alliance?

Almost all polls show that Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum are chasing after the same conservative GOP primary voters. Mr. Santorum may not be able to beat front-runner Mitt Romney with Mr. Gingrich in the race, but in a two-man contest his prospects improve markedly. Could a deal be in the making between Messrs. Santorum and Gingrich to deny Mr. Romney the nomination?

It’s too early to count out the former House speaker, but even Mr. Gingrich acknowledges that he has to win Georgia and probably one or two other southern states to carry on. Super Tuesday could be his last hoorah. If Mr. Gingrich drops out, he will almost certainly throw his support behind Mr. Santorum. The two are friendly from the days when they served in the House together. More importantly, there is no love lost between Mr. Romney and Mr. Gingrich, who maintains that Mr. Romney’s political attacks on him crossed a line.

When I ask a senior Santorum adviser about an alliance, he whispers that Mr. Santorum’s odds go way up with Mr. Gingrich out. But he also emphasizes that Mr. Santorum has avoided asking the former speaker to quit the race.

Even without Mr. Gingrich in the race, Mitt Romney is still a prohibitive favorite. But if Mr. Santorum can stitch together a coalition of Gingrich supporters in the South with his own culturally conservative and blue collar voters in Midwestern states like Ohio and Pennsylvania, this race could go on for months.

The remaining question in this GOP primary is whether the “anybody but Romney” forces coalesced around one candidate are large enough to deny the former Massachusetts governor the nomination.

…regarding EE’s Horserace:

http://www.redstate.com/erick/2012/03/02/the-horserace-for-march-2-2012/

*

Remember a few concepts, each of which is dramatized [for good or for bad or for indifferent/ugly] in today’s WSJ.

1. Andrew ["he made it cool to be conservative" Breitbart reminds us of the need to unite against BHO; amazingly, the "Remembrances" piece in the WSJ was buried @ the bottom of page 5.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203753704577255163292926398.html#mod=djempersonal

2. Perry continues to support The Newt, and the best way to rephrase the challenge is to perceive non-contenders as potential POTUS-nominees in 2020 [because we should envision re-election of whichever Republican is nominated this year]; although favored to win in his home-state, thinly-veiled hit-pieces abound ["Strong Views of Gingrich in District He Represented"] with this one ending with a “balanced” conclusion [a husband/wife supporting Romney/anyone].

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203960804577241762170024558.html?mod=WSJ_WSJ_US_News_6

3. Many unifying themes exist—and must be emphasized—as has been emphasized by The Newt; of course, this essay’s code ominously suggests that it may be necessary for his GOP-competitors to champion his ideas ["Gingrich's Energy Charge"].

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB20001424052970203986604577255761338883798.html?mod=djempersonal

The bottom-line, here, is that 2011?s Gathering will be a hard-act to follow, recalling the energy of Perry’s announcement [and subsequent abandonment]…but it is vital to support the eventual nominee, particularly if it is Perry’s preference, The Newt.

*

Lest there be any ambiguity…

…the good/bad/indifferent-ugly treatment of The Newt [and a man who embodied his energies] by the WSJ should not be lost among those who are being distracted by the “cinema” of the incessant discussion of a 2-man race.

The Newt remains the “Main St.” guy [a mantle inherited from Perry] who contrasts with “Wall St. Mitt” and “Main St. BHO.” Even a few minutes ago, Chris Wallace noted a drop in support for Santoroum [upper 20%], as The Newt rises [to~20%]. So, let’s just give it time, allow The Newt to win the biggest prize on Super Tuesday, build momentum the following week, and [recognizing rhetorical expertise, to be displayed again on FNC tomorrow-p.m.] displace Santorum as the anti-Romney.

It is almost too late for Mitt to begin to gesture to signal interest in possibly dialoguing someday with the key-triumvitate of the revitalized GOP: the Evangelicals, the Constitutional Conservatives, the TEA [“Taxed Enough Already”] Party Movement activists.

Candidly, I’m amazed that Mitt has chosen to try to demonstrate the ability to gain the nomination by ignoring the base—instead incessantly going-negative against his competitors—and let’s see how Sarah frames it tonight on FNC [probably continuing to telegraph support for The Newt]. Meanwhile, the Seattle Times just “endorsed” Mitt as the “default-choice.”
