(cross-posted at Independent Thinking)
Though you won’t hear it from most major news outlets, Washington Times (along with Newsmax, WND and UPI) reports that a US border patrol agent was recently held at gunpoint by Mexican troops — on United States Soil. According to the report, Mexican soldiers crossed the border in a fairly isolated location, approached the border agent (who has not been identified) and pointed their rifles at him.
Surprising and outrageous, perhaps — but even more so is the fact that this is only one over more than 200 such incidents to take place since 1996. Some incidents have not been quite as threatening as this one, while one, which took place in 2002, involved armed Mexican soldiers actually firing on a lone border agent, actually shooting the agent’s vehicle with a .50 caliber weapon.
While it is certain that at least some of the 200 incursions by Mexican military onto our soil were accidental (after all, it’s not as if there’s a border fence…), incidents like the two I’ve mentioned above are clearly threats to US agents, obvious international incidents, and, if we’re to be honest about it, acts of war. These actions may or may not be sanctioned by the Mexican government, but the United States has the right, authority and duty to demand an explanation from Mexico, and extract the promise that these events cease immediately, under threat of severe military consequence.
The fact is, The US Customs and Border Patrol is law enforcement. They are simply not equipped to deal with a threat to national security — as armed Mexican soldiers entering US property unprovoked clearly is. If only we had a group of trained soldiers whose job it was to guard the nation.
It is long past time to get on the backs of our elected officials about this. It’s time to build the damned fence. It’s time to militarize the border. It’s time for the government to do what we elected them to do: protect the United States of America.

mbecker908 (Diary) Wednesday, August 6th at 7:07PM EST (link)Ricardo Alday, spokesman at the Mexican Embassy in Washington, said Tuesday that Mexico and the United States are engaged in “an all-out struggle to deter criminal organizations from operating on both sides of our common border.”
Yeah right. Mexico is an institutionally corrupt country. Their police and military operate on the theory of “the mordida”. They get paid little by the government and extract a gratuity from those they serve. They are also famous for not staying “bought”.
BUILD THE WALL!
Yes... I'm sure it was an attempt to apprehend a drug smuggler...

They must think Americans are as stupid as Barack Obama does.

Spent 5 years near the border.
nogyro35 (Diary) Thursday, August 7th at 1:32PM EST (link)I didn’t hear of any Mexican soldier incursions when I lived about 6 miles from the border. Of course my neighborhood was a short jog from MARINE CORPS Air Station Yuma, AZ.
What bothers me most about this article is that a friend, a Marine Vet. and Border Patrol agent just recently moved from Yuma to Nogales.
Time to give him a call.
Within site of the fence
jackbenimble (Diary) Thursday, August 7th at 1:59PM EST (link)The official line from both the USA and Mexican governments seems to be that this incursion was innocent and resulted from confusion over the location of various sections of unmarked border. It is shameful that there are any such sections of border 6 years after 9/11.
But even more shamefull is that it appears to be a LIE!
American Border Patrol is reporting that this incursion took place within site of newly erected border vehicle barriers and an extremely well marked established border patrol road. It is their opinion that the incursion could only be explained as an intentional act.
American Border Patrol is definately an advocacy group with an axe to grind and possibly also a bit whacky on this issue. But if I am given a choice of believing them or my own government …. well lets just say our government has a long history of being disingenous and less than forthcoming on this issue.

randy streu (Diary) Thursday, August 7th at 2:45PM EST (link)on incidents like this one, including the other one I cited above, I have a hard time buying the “accident” excuse.
Of course, if they would just erect the frigging fence, that excuse would be entirely off the table.

And we expect what?
Flagstaff (Diary) Thursday, August 7th at 5:16PM EST (link)Two Border Patrol agents are in jail for over 10 years as a result of a technical infraction while doing their jobs.
Meanwhile, the man they tried to apprehend was recently sentenced to less than 10 years for his crime, smuggling dope.
What is wrong with that picture?
And why aren’t we defending our own borders from armed international invaders? I can guarantee that Mexico would have every soldier they could muster at the border if the situation were reversed.
McCain should add vigorous border enforcement to his oil-drilling position statements.

Let's buy the gov't a case or two of orange spray paint

I’ll contribute $100 worth of spray paint. Where shall I send it?
