Secrets Hurt Democrats

That’s why they oppose them in elections

Growing up in South Georgia I quickly learned that if someone wanted you to know who they voted for in an election they would tell you.  If not, well, you were best to just leave the subject alone.  That’s because voting is a precious personal decision.  When Georgia voters go to cast their ballot in the December 2 runoff, no one will know who they voted for unless they feel compelled to tell someone.  The same should be the case in labor union votes.

True elections are conducted with anonymity for voters.  Secret ballots allow people to freely vote their conscience when selecting those who will create and enforce our laws. It is a right so fundamental to legitimate elections that a group of Democrat Congressmen sent a letter to Mexican labor authorities imploring them to institute secret ballots in labor elections. Yet, this past summer Democrats held a press conference to pledge their support for eliminating secret ballot elections in the United States.

Why would they do something so contradictory? To me the answer is clear; they want to pay back Big Labor for financing their recent elections.

Most Americans (87%) believe the current secret ballot election system works fine and would oppose elimination of secret ballot elections. In fact the AFL-CIO still supports secret ballot elections to remove unions because they “provide the surest means for avoiding decisions which are the result of group pressures and not individual decisions.”

Still, union leaders are drastically pushing for such a revamp of current labor election laws.

According to The Australian, “At a conference this year Stern [head of the SEIU] predicted the effect of card check on union membership would be even greater. Unions, he said, would grow by 1.5 million members annually for 10 to 15 years, increases that would fortify union finances.” What about improved working conditions? Improved heath care? No time for that, we have elections to finance.

The fact is this: given the free choice to join a union via secret ballot elections, most Americans loudly and clearly say thanks, but no thanks. That is simply not acceptable for Big Labor and their plans to force unions on all American workers whether they like it or not. And with all those union dues flowing in for political use, Democrats stand to benefit while average Americans get the short end of the stick.

Ladies and gentleman, this is what will happen with unchecked Democrat control of the federal government.

Right now my reelection in the December 2nd runoff might be the only thing standing between this nightmare scenario and ensuring fairness and honesty in labor elections.

Please visit my site, www.saxby.org to learn how we can work together to stop this and ensure the continuation of American ideals and values.

Who would want an open ballot?

Mike Gray Thursday, November 20th at 4:43PM EST (link)

I can’t think of any reason I’d support an open ballot. In fact, I’d go so far as to say I automatically distrust anyone that lobbies for an open ballot, because I assume that they plan to “convince” those who don’t agree that there is a “better” alternative to whomever or whatever they wish to vote for.

Massive spending hurts "conservatives"

You guys need to get it together.

No one wants to vote for you guys as long as you are simply posing as less-extreme liberals with fiscal policies. I’m embarrassed by the deficits alleged “conservatives” turned in.

Kidding right? As brawny organizer walks up to you at lunch, shoves card under your nose and says

sign this! Then, you would want a secret ballot.

I think I’ll stick with the secret ballot if I may. I don’t want any of “special persuasion” that comes with raising my hand or writing my name down.

that you hammer Mr. Martin, and the union surrogates who come to campaign for him on this Senator. The people of Georgia need to know this, and realize what the implications are, if the unions get 60 votes in the Senate. The One will do whatever they want.
America does not need an enforced blossoming of union membership.

Secret Ballot

Yil Thursday, November 20th at 5:25PM EST (link)

Level playing field. I’m torn on this issue. On the one hand I’ve seen a majority of individuals at a company/store express an interest in forming a union and in the time between that and the final vote members voting it down. What changed people’s minds? Management. If it were purely a case of having the better argument then there is nothing wrong with that. However, examples like some of Wal-Mart’s actions indicate it wasn’t a fair fight. Closing entire stores the threatening the jobs of those trying to form a union is a whole lot more serious than 2 guys looking over your shoulder.

On the other hand, some unions are just useless and a drain on everyone except the people drawing money from it. If forming a union gets easier, it should also be easier to vote to disband the union. In fact any new union should be required to hold a vote in 18 months which can disband it if employee’s find it isn’t in their best interest.

I prefer a secret ballot, but unless someone is going to stop a company willing to close stores, make life hell for organizers, etc then there needs to be changes made. Perhaps a shorter time from signatures about forming a union until the actual vote? Say 30 days instead of the months companies drag it out? That might limit the intimidation factor.

Would you agree that a vote within 30 days of the presentation of a majority of workers signatures looking to form a union is an acceptable compromise to card check?

Voluntary membership

Mike Gray Thursday, November 20th at 5:39PM EST (link)

If unions are going to force people into membership, then those people should have the benefit of secret ballot to protect them.

Whether or not a group of workers should unionize is between them and their company. Open versus secret ballots have no bearing on that unless one side or the other wishes to know who the “bad guys” are.

The real solution however, is to protect individuals that wish to opt out of union representation. This is especially true when unions use dues to promote and endorse political candidates that some members may not personally endorse.

If the climate in a company is such that a union is needed to protect the workers, then there’s no need to fear individuals who would decline to be a part. And if there isn’t enough interest in a union, then a union is not necessary in the first place.

civil_truth Thursday, November 20th at 5:41PM EST (link)

The right to a secret ballot is not.

Part of the reason that things change by the time a unioin election comes around is that people learn more facts about the consequences of starting a union. And probably mixed with false assertions as well. But that’s the case with any election - voters have to sort out competing messages.

The point is to prevent intimidation - and the best protection is secrecy in voting. The rest is the human condition.

you will publicly (a post on Redstate would do fine)admit voting for HR1424 was a horrible idea and you shouldn’t have done it. Further, you pledge to reduce government at ever opportunity and never vote for such a pork laden thing as that bill ever again.

Signing Allen Buckley’s declaration would be sufficient as well. You can read it here…

This is way too important. We can’t let Chicago-style thug politics pollute our workplaces. Chambliss needs our help.

The secret ballot was so management would not retaliate against workers who favored the union.
Now it’s so the union won’t retaliate sgainst the workers.

It must represent certain fundamental beliefs which must not be compromised to political expediency, or simply to swell its numbers.

No Secret Ballot - horrible idea

Whitehorse Friday, November 21st at 12:12AM EST (link)

This is one thing we must fight tooth & nail, & let the American people know who is fighting to keep the secret ballot secret. If we do the right things & let the people know we are, get our leaders back to fiscally responsible limited government conservatism, the future will be bright.

it’s Wal-Mart’s, or Sears, or JCP, insert whichever big company here, money, and their stores. Until the Obamunists make it illegal to close your own stores, or do what you want with your own money, in the interest of “fairness”, they can do what they want to fight union takeovers. And, that’s what they are, union attempts to take over a business, and run it into the ground. See the auto industry for examples. The Big 3 have done so well, partnered with the UAW. Also, see State of Michigan. Look at all the wonderfulness we’re surrounded with here, because of the wonderful unions.
