Your insurance is cancelled? Don’t replace it
There is a minuscule chance that something serious will happen that will make you wish you had insurance. Take the amount you would have paid as premium and put it in an HSA. It will accumulate in all your healthy years to be able to pay a hefty amount if you need it.
It would be the irony of all ironies if ObamaCare results in MORE people choosing to go without insurance. If that happens and millions more people find that they don’t really need insurance, that eliminating the middle man between them and the doctor is a good thing, then we will move slowly closer to the right solution, which is for insurance to be true insurance, not paying for every routine visit, but paying only for catastrophic events that you hope never happen.
By the way, that tax for not buying insurance, it’s not like all other taxes. They cannot come after you to pay it. All they can do is deduct it from your refund. So if you arrange your withholding so that you have no refund coming, then you won’t have to pay that fine.
