Poor Tom Cole. It's not his fault. He just happens to be in charge of the NRCC this year. But he and the House GOP leadership have been unwilling to repudiate troubled members of the House GOP caucus. They have failed to lead on tough issues. And they have no money and are about to be swept out to sea. I'll shed a tear, but just so I can help add a few more drops to the tidal wave.

Yes, yes, they are in a difficult position. But, and I don't know about you, but I expect a leader to lead in a tough situation and take bold action to correct the problem.

And let's be clear: the problem is not that the GOP is in the minority. The problem, well, let me give you a visual on the problem and make of it what you will.

Posted at 9:34am on May 24, 2007 Remind Dave Camp About Joe Schwartz

By Erick

Call Dave Camp (MI-4) today.  His numbers are (202) 225-3561 and (231) 929-4711.

Ask him if he was aware of the Riverside County Grand Jury's investigation.  Ask him if he is aware of the FBI's seizure of Calvert's records.  Ask him if he remembers what happened to Joe Schwartz.

Also, don't forget to call Tom Cole at (202) 225-6165.  Just tell the person who answers the phone that you wanted to let Congressman Cole know you will not be contributing to the NRCC's efforts until Ken Calvert is off Appropriations.

Report back here in the comments.

Posted at 9:58am on May 23, 2007 Contact Doc

By Erick

Yesterday, the Republicans did the right thing — they attempted to hold John Murtha accountable for his earmarks and bullying.  They've also tried to hold Alan Mollohan responsible for his corruption and earmarks.

Nonetheless, Ken Calvert is alleged to have done the same shady transactions that Mollohan has been engaged in.  What did the GOP do?  They put Calvert on the Appropriations Committee.  How can they expect us to fight the Alan Mollohans of the world when they are rewarding similar behavior?

Call Doc Hastings (WA-4) today.  Rep. Hastings represents Washington State, which, given the corruption in King County, will probably not like to know Doc Hastings voted for someone like Ken Calvert.  Hasting's numbers are (202) 225-5816 and (509) 452-3438.

Also, don't forget to call Tom Cole at (202) 225-6165.  Just tell the person who answers the phone that you wanted to let Congressman Cole know you will not be contributing to the NRCC's efforts until Ken Calvert is off Appropriations.

Posted at 9:37am on May 22, 2007 Erick's Double Dog Dare to RedState Readers

By Erick

The GOP is never going to take seriously your complaints about immigration.  They don't take you seriously.  How unserious do they treat you?

So unseriously that the NRCC is having a fundraiser for Ken Calvert with special guest Jerry Lewis.  They may just share stories about about the FBI seizing their records.

And how embarrased is the NRCC?  When I reported on the fundraiser, they took down all the information.  Nonetheless, the event is still on.

Ken Calvert's fundraiser will be at the Capitol Hill Club at 300 First Street, S.E.  It'll be at 6:00 p.m. tonight in room 4 on the 3rd floor.

I double dog dare you to print out copies of Ken Calvert's arrest report and hand them out to the folks going to the party.

In the meantime, call Tom Cole and remind him that the NRCC will get not one dime.  Cole's number is (202) 225-6165.

Posted at 5:14pm on May 21, 2007 The NRCC Wants Your Money . . . To Give To Ken Calvert [UPDATED]

By Erick

[UPDATED] The NRCC has deleted the link and all information about this fundraising event. However, I just called and the Capitol Hill Club confirms that the event is still scheduled for tomorrow evening.

Isn't this rich.

Maybe we should all show up dressed as pimps and hoes, or FBI agents.

Let's not dance around this issue -- this is a fundraiser where the ranking Republican member of the Appropriations Committee will be on hand to make sure lobbyists show up and hand over cash to Ken Calvert.

So much for Republicans caring about ethics. Remember, call John Boehner today.

Posted at 3:23pm on May 18, 2007 FRC Joins the Calvert Fight

By Erick

The Family Research Council has joined our fight against Ken Calvert's appointment to Appropriations. While the House and Senate are already being overwhelmed with calls about the immigration bill, the FRC is asking all of its members to pile on John Boehner over the Calvert appointment.

And FRC is just the beginning.

Thank you, FRC!

Posted at 3:34pm on May 17, 2007 Heads Up: House Sources Say Ken Calvert Lied To Caucus

By Erick

House sources tell me that, when Calvert met with the House caucus about his appointment, he said he was not being investigated.

That's flat out not true.

News reports from California show that the Riverside County Grand Jury sought records relating to a 4 acre sale of property to Ken Calvert last year by the Jurupa Community Services District.

The district acquired the land in the 1970s for flood control and a park. The park was never built.

The land in Mira Loma, in northwest Riverside County, also was sold without first notifying other public agencies and was based on an outdated appraisal, The Press-Enterprise found last year. The handling of that deal was a factor in last year's ouster of the district's general manager.

The Grand Jury has not issued its report yet and is apparently still looking into the matter.

Posted at 1:15pm on May 17, 2007 Congressmen are Angry Over Calvert Appointment

By Erick

I continue to get calls from folks on Capitol Hill about Calvert. Also, several people who managed NRCC backed campaigns last year have volunteered NRCC call lists. On Monday, some big guns will come to fight with us.

Also, more is leaking out about dissatisfaction among lawmakers. The Democrats, the Hill notes, could have stopped the appointment, but are rather delighted by it.

after the GOP Steering Committee picked Calvert for the post, at least three GOP members spoke out in a private conference meeting against Calvert’s appointment, including Reps. Ray Lahood (Ill.), Ginny Brown-Waite (Fla.) and Dave Camp (Mich.), one GOP lawmaker present said.

During the vote, several Republican shouts of “no” prompted the GOP to call for a show of hands, which indicated a lopsided vote in favor of Calvert’s appointment, according to several GOP sources present. There was an objection to confirming the appointment by a show of hands, and at least one member called for a secret-ballot vote. But that move would have required a unanimous agreement, and at least one member objected. As a result, the effort failed, the sources said.

This week, some GOP members were still lamenting the decision.

“It’s like we didn’t learn anything from last year,” one GOP lawmaker said, referring to the November elections and the loss of the party’s majority control.

And as the momentum grows, Calvert is trying to quell the issue. But it won't help him.

Posted at 9:31am on May 17, 2007 John McHugh Ought To Listen To You. Call Him Today.

By Erick

In light of the GOP disaster in New York last November, John McHugh (NY-23) would be a fool not to listen to you.  Call him at (315) 782-3150 first.  Then call (202) 225-4611.

Ask if he voted for Calvert.  Then you may want to ask the following:

(1)  Are you aware that Ken Calvert paid a heroin addicted prostitute for oral sex?

(2)  Are you aware that Calvert will be the fourth California Republican on the Appropriations Committee to have records seized by the FBI?

TIP:  If they say they want to mail you the answer, ask first to speak to someone else.  If they insist on mailing you something, respond, "So what you are telling me is that you refuse to answer?  I'll consider that a yes vote."

Also, don't forget to call Tom Cole at (202) 225-6165.  Just tell the person who answers the phone that you wanted to let Congressman Cole know you will not be contributing to the NRCC's efforts until Ken Calvert is off Appropriations.

Posted at 12:42am on May 17, 2007 Party men, Townhall, and war.

By trevino

From the diaries...

This piece originally appeared at joshua.trevino.at.

“The men of the party took the 1994 and 2000 victories won by the men of the movement, and squandered it all on — well, the party.”

A truly remarkable series of events has transpired in the past few days, and we are faced with a split in the online right that is both portentious -- and necessary. Before we get into the details of the division, we must step back a bit and ask why we participate in the online political sphere at all. Some few do it out of purely perverse motivations, it's true, but most do it for one of two reasons: to advance a movement, or to advance a party. These are not the same things, and each needs the other -- but it does not follow from this that they are equally important. The only Marx quote I approve of is paraphrased, “Philosophers seek to explain the world; the point is to change it.” This is well and good for motivating on-the-ground activism (in a Marxian context, with Molotov cocktails and Ninth Circuit suits), but it ignores the necessity of the explanation preceding and motivating the change. A structure is not an end alone; an apparatus that exists to promote the apparatus is worthless to all but itself; there must be content before the container becomes worth carrying. From this follows the obvious: that the Republican Party is worthwhile only inasmuch as it reflects and promotes conservative ideals, aims, and principles.

Here we have two congressmen. Both have had a problem with a sex related issue. One was arrested. One was not. One was promoted to the Appropriations Committee. One was forced to resign. Can you guess who's who?
