Don’t Let Them Vote for a Government Takeover of Health Care Before They Vote Against It

A defining moment is coming in this year’s health care debate.

Yesterday, Democrat leaders announced they may soon bring Harry Reid’s new health care bill to the Senate floor in an effort to grant the President’s wish for a government takeover of our nation’s health care by Christmas. This is in spite of the fact that 99 senators have never seen Reid’s new bill that was written in secret. Reid even hinted he may rush to a vote before the bill’s been public for 72 hours, as even Democrats have demanded.

To begin debate on this new version of Obamacare, Reid will play a shell game. He needs 60 senators to “vote to proceed” to an unrelated piece of legislation, and once he clears that hurdle he will strike that bill’s text and insert his new health care bill. But don’t be fooled by senators that will say they oppose a government takeover but just wanted to allow debate on health care, they are not being honest.

The simple fact is this: Any senator that votes to proceed to the Reid-Obama bill is voting for a government takeover of health care.

Why? Because, President Obama and Harry Reid cannot pass a government takeover without clearing 60 vote procedural hurdles in the Senate — but they also know that vulnerable Democrats likely cannot win reelection if they vote for this unpopular bill. So they want all Democrats to stick together on the vote to proceed, then some Democrats will vote against final passage of the bill and claim they tried to stop it.

Senators who say they just want to allow for debate are trying to deceive their voters while giving President Obama the crucial votes he needs to pass a government takeover of health care.

Voters should be watching and remember who stands up for their freedom and who stands with the special interests who want to ram through this takeover.

Democrats have now offered 5 different versions of Obamacare (the first House bill, the second House bill, the Senate Finance bill, the Senate HELP bill, and now Reid’s bill). And despite the nuances, every Democrat bill we’ve seen puts Washington in control of health care, slashes Medicare coverage for seniors, raises premiums for families, raises taxes, places bureaucrats between patients and doctors, punishes young adults who choose not to buy coverage, and opens the door to government rationing of care.

We know the Reid plan will be more of the same and cannot be fixed by a few amendments on the Senate floor. The attempt to give Washington control over one-sixth of our economy is rotten to its core. And any improvements made to the bill will be a mirage that will vanish as soon as the bill goes behind closed doors in conference with the Pelosi bill.

Americans have loudly and repeatedly rejected the President’s government takeover of health care. It’s time to for the Senate to listen, stop the shell games, and start over with real solutions that will provide every American the opportunity to afford, own and keep a health care plan that best meets their needs. To that end, I introduced the Health Care Freedom Plan earlier this year. It would give Americans hundreds of health plan options through interstate competition, create fair tax treatment for those who don’t get their insurance from an employer, and provides real tort reform to stop frivolous lawsuits.

We can have a real debate about common sense solutions, but only if we first stop this government takeover. And we can stop this bill if we don’t let Democrats try to have it both ways.

Don’t let them vote for a government takeover of health care before they vote against it. The “vote to proceed” to Obamacare may be one of the most important votes any Senator takes. Make sure your senator knows you are watching.

As we have been warning here at RedState, MAOBama’s Hell-th Bill is not D.O.A., despite predictions from various commentators.

The odds are that some form of this disaster will pass: the sun will come up the next day, but eventually people will see that America’s leftists have pushed it from a very high cliff. The question is: how hard will the landing be?

Or like in Road Runner cartoons, will we be lucky enough to hit a Bush and spring back upward? :)

Send protest letters, e-mails, or call people you know and ask them to protest the Hell-th Bill: I do not believe enough people are yet aware of this catastrophe, otherwise certain Democrats would not be “wavering” about what to do.

And what about this poll saying 57% of Americans believe in Robin-Hood financing for health care?

I am appalled at a dozen of the replies here! It would appear that you do not take this topic at all seriously or understand the full ramifications of a healthcare takeover by the thug-in-chief and his minions.

Why bother posting at all if you have nothing of substance to say? Please don’t waste my time and the others’ time who obviously take this issue soberly. Get over yourselves; our very existence as a free people is at stake!

“The simple fact is this: Any senator that votes to proceed to the Reid-Obama bill is voting for a government takeover of health care.”

Thanks, Senator DeMint for standing firm on healthcare. I just implore you not to compromise for its own sake to get a bad bill passed. Go for the gold.

But they fail to recognize that outside their drone-like and drooling base of useful idiots, the rest of us are not so easily hoodwinked.

Any Dem playing this kind of ridiculous game will instantly earn a target on his back.

I plan to let my slippery senators (one lib Dem and one RINO) know beforehand that their game is obvious, and that we’re watching.

I’ve been seeing info that Hatch is going to vote for cloture. Anyone else hear the same? Do we need to flood his phones?

Listen, I am not a Democrat and I?m not a Republican either. If you have to be a Republican to post here, then I guess I will have a problem. I?m a small government moderate. I honestly am opposed to all of the Democrats? health care reform proposals. I honestly believe health care needs to be reformed. I hope in this debate that Republicans really do care about regular people because this Dem health care reform effort needs to be defeated. It needs to be defeated now, as well as at the ballot box. I fear it will not be.

Senator DeMint is saying that any Senator who votes to allow the bill to come to the floor is actually voting to pass Obamacare. Joe Lieberman has said that he WANTS to debate health care and will vote to proceed to debate. So are the anti-Obamacare people (most rational Americans) wrong in counting on Senator Lieberman’s support?

And, Senator DeMint, as well as other Republicans, keep talking about wanting to protect Medicare. Personally, I see paying for Medicare as the main problem our government faces. Aren’t Republicans in Congress in favor of cutting the growth of Medicare spending? It used to be that I thought they wanted to abolish the program altogether

What Lieberman etc, were talking about before was a motion to proceed on either on the House bill or on Reid’s version – which then would be subject to a later cloture vote to end debate that requires 60 votes. Thus a move to proceed ono that bill does not preempt a later fillibuster.

What DeMint is talking about here is something different – a previously rumored pariliametary maneuver that would evade a later fillibuster, by bringing up another bill and then substituting the health care bill – thereby making this vote the only one that needs 60 votes.

Totally different creature, as I understand it.

The Republicans have wanted an upfront “in the light” discussion of Medicare/Social Security financing, since we all know the horrendous actuarial underfunding of these programs that dwarfs the rest of the national devt.

What is going on here is that ObamaCare puts backdoor cuts in spending via unelected agents that is not subject to public discussion – and that future Congresses can ignore anyway.

So we have several dishonest and contradictory things going on with ObamaCare:

    1) phantom cuts in Medicare designed solely to play games with the cost of ObamaCare by pretending there will be offsetting savings (along with the tax increases before the program starts to game the 10-year numbers)

    2) solemn promises that seniors will not see cuts in their benefits;

    3) setting up these backdoor commissions to make decisions on coverage without accountability.

Just think about the breast cancer change of direction and consider under ObamaCare that such edicts will not be recommendations but mandates.

  • countessolenska

I am firmly convinced that any Democratic bill that has been proposed so far is worse than what we have right now. This cobbling together of deals and compromises and giveaways to various industries and groups is NOT the way to reform health care.

  • countessolenska

They’re saying for now that they want to keep Medicare intact, but this is only a temporary ploy in their efforts to defeat Obamacare?

  • mschmitt

And, once we get rid of Medicare and Social Security, we’ll finally be able to enact our master plan: force every senior to eat cat food made from diseased Chinese beef so that they get lead poisoning and die in poverty!

    Mo-by.

You’re betraying your leftist roots here, projecting on the right the kind of devious motives that your side practices as second nature.

What I said was Republicans want an honest, upfront discussion over the future of Medicare (and Social Security) so that it will be a sustainable program – because there’s no way in terms of the numbers that Medicare can remain “intact” if we stay on the present course – AND YOU KNOW THAT D*MN WELL.

ObamaCare simply politicizes the cuts and rationing while pretending that the bill improves care, with a large dollop of scientific handwaving – AND YOU KNOW THAT D*MN WELL..

Your response is simply making up words and putting them in my mouth – AND YOU KNOW THAT D*MN WELL.

Despite my harsh comments yesterday, I thought I’d giver you a chance – but you’ve just proven my judgment. So I spew you out of my mouth.
