Quick Post for the Historical Illiterates

I could write a whole history, but have neither the time, nor the will to educate morons. Some local news outlets managed to mangle American history in an attempt to beclown Sarah Palin. They only beclowned themselves. But the misinformation is spreading like wildfire. Some quick facts to douse this nonsense.

Paul Revere’s ride occurred before the Declaration of Independence. The United States of America did not exist. Many of the patriots still considered themselves loyal British subjects. Paul Revere did not yell “the British are coming”. He was British. The people he was warning were British. That would have been stupid to yell the British are coming. Historians have concluded that he warned the colonial British that the “regulars” are coming or the “redcoats” were coming.  As the riders snuck out of Boston, it was a stealth mission. But once he was beyond the scope of the redcoat sentries, Paul Revere did use various methods to wake and warn people.  Upon hearing his warnings, his fellow patriots at Lexington and Concord rang town bells to wake and warn the people. The Lexington Green bell is still rung at re-enactments today.

yes he never said those actual words but his midnight ride was about warning the settlers that the British army was coming.

Now on to the story, yes the media is trying to make her look stupid by actually quoting her word for word.

Here is Palin’s quote on this (the video shows a clear deer in the headlights)
“He who warned the British that they weren’t going to be taking away our arms by ringing those bells and, um, making sure as he’s riding his horse through town to send those warning shots and bells that, uh, we were going to be secure and we were going to be free.”

Looks like she is doing this historic tour for personal educational purposes since she slept through high school history class.

    • rogershru2

I can see why she sticks to friendly interviews and one way social media outlets. She probably knows more about the history than that interview implied, but she sometimes freezes up with unexpected questions.

      • Goldwater_Conservative

they will see this and either blame the lamestream media or try and argue that what she said was correct. Poor girl has so many talking points floating around when she goes off script she sounds like someone who just finished the 6th grade.

      • http://908StraightSt.wordpress.com/ mbecker908

never – takes quesions from anybody who asks a hard question or expects to be able to ask a follow up. It’s one of the reasons, IMO, that she’ll not win an election for the forseeable future.

She’s gone out of her way to antagonize people who buy ink by the barrel and bandwidth by the bazillion GHz and gets bent out of shape when she takes heat from them and then she won’t face them.

        • Goldwater_Conservative

we know she is not camera shy, so we can throw that out. Now she is the one that decided to go visit the Mass site where Revere made his late night ride so its not like that was a question out of left field. But most of all, how is that not a question that any partially educated american doent know? She said “warned that the British weren’t going to take away our arms”. Now come on, thats not just someone freezing, thats someone who really is stupid, there is no other way to cut that. She could be on Jaywalking with Leno every week.

          • gekster

Just what were the British going to do when they got to Boston?

          • Goldwater_Conservative

Samual Adams and John Hancock and occupy Lexington

occupying power to seize all the enemies weapons. Im pretty sure the main point of the ride was to preserve two of the biggest figures of the revolution.

and we havent even discussed the rest of the quote, but just say your 3 hail sarah’s and read a good mamma grizzly bedtime story and it will all go away.

          • gekster

I like the ad lib though.

          • gekster

I seam to allways agree with the way posters portray me.
So in keeping with your implication,
Our Ste. Sarah, who art in New England,
May you tour/campaign bus allways remain, ……….

          • Goldwater_Conservative

while her answer did contain some of the basic facts: ringing the bell, warning (about) British, take guns away and freedom (cue william wallace), but every single part of that was out of place. Its like she read the Cliffs notes version of the event and had no way of connecting the few key points.

          • rogershru2

            Ok, maybe not THAT bad.

          • Goldwater_Conservative

its just wrong, when they go off script you almost have to turn off the tv, it makes you cringe watching it.

          • gekster

Our Ste. Sarah, who art in New England,
May you tour/campaign bus allways remain,
full of unleaded, with media intow,
            wishing to forget of McCain.
            Give us this day,
            our reading of the constitution,
and forgive us our gafffes, as we forgive those who gaffe,
And lead us not into liberalism,
for thine is conservative, the way, forever and ever,
            God bless America,
            Amen.

          • Goldwater_Conservative

and had that essay question out of left field and the only part of the book we can remember that dealt with the question was the title of the chapter. So we go rogue on the whole thing and hope we can accidentaly hit on the key points and get at least partial credit for it. I’ve been there, so I know exactly what she was doing.

          • gekster

            Lighten up, dude.

          • Goldwater_Conservative

its hilarious and frankly I keep watching to see what she says next. Its no longer funny though when someone actually suggest that this is the best we can do in the whole GOP to go after Obama.

          • gpclaw

That’s one of the first things we did in Iraq. It would be pretty stupid to do otherwise.

          • Doc Holliday

they were after a cache of arms, there is no way to argue away the facts. best to say “oops” and move on.

          • rogershru2

He rode to warn the British.

Without getting too caught in the details, though, the disturbing part is how confused she looked at a softball question. Kind of like the softball what-do-you-read question. Apparently not much has changed.

          • silentcal2012

Americans???? Really, get versed in history. They were all British. They considered themselves traditional free British and the regulars and lobsterbacks oppressors.

          • Goldwater_Conservative

Americans. Yes we all know, well maybe Sarah doesn’t, that the settlers were British immigrants. But the reason for his late night ride was to warn the colonists that the actual British army was coming. So for her to say he warned the British shows she is completely confused and befuddled, which the rest of the quote supports as well.

in increasing numbers for more than 20 years leading up to Paul Revere’s ride.

          • silentcal2012

Those most sensitive to liberties claimed them as free and proud sons of England. They were well aware of their rights under British law. Plus, many fought in the French-Canadian War and were very proud of their British heritage. The idea of Paul Revere running around screaming the British are coming is an absolute myth. Any real historian knows this. Its may make for easy, corny history for simpletons, but its not true. There was still great loyalty to the king. They blamed Parliament.

          • http://www.examiner.com/x-1597-Charlotte-Law--Politics-Examiner Mike gamecock DeVine

Most of the “evidence” for the revisionist history is an argument from absence, on many issues, including whether Revere “could have” yelled “the British” are coming. Well, of course he could have. One reason is that the group anticipating the fight af=greed that this would be the phrase. Moreover since the Boston Massacre on the 1760s going forward, increasing numbers began thinking of revolution and themselves as separate from the British since they treated them as separate from those with greater rights back in England. You might want to read “As if an Enemy’s Country.” Great book. The loyalties to the King and Parliament were waning in different degrees among different groups and a minority were for fighting the Kings army and Parliaments laws. Revere was not with those that were loyal! Quite the opposite.

BTW, I’m gamecock. I don’t get drawn into the juvenile name-calling and challenges to “real” historians, so save that crap for your pajama party. If you want to have a civil discussion, fine, otherwise, we seek more quality discussion elsewhere. I don’t call for the banning of trolls. I just ignore them after a fair hearing by my standards. HINT: No more of this “real” historian business. Don’t be a punk. smile

          • silentcal2012

This isn’t speculative history. Paul Revere wrote down his own account. You’re not correcting me with your smug attitude. You are correcting Paul Revere. Tell Paul Revere that his own account is false. There were other eye witnesses who corroborates his own account. He said “The Regulars are coming out.” So, yeah. You go around talking down to people like some high school history teacher, when the clear history refutes your position.

          • http://www.examiner.com/x-1597-Charlotte-Law--Politics-Examiner Mike gamecock DeVine

your contention. Please note the inherent difficulty of disproving a negative, ie trying to prove that Revere did NOT say something is quite a different proposition from proving that he said other things as well as what you document. But give it your best shot. I’ll give you one more chance to eschew juvenile name-calling and join a debate that has been raging for many years with “real
            historians all over the lot.

We see thru a glass darkly…just now….ie Paul Revere is dead and cannot be subjected to cross-examination….

          • Doc Holliday

why do you keep calling people simpletons and morons? You say others are talking down to people but it is you who are acting the part of the ass. You don’t know as much history as you think you do, and anyone who loves history does not insult others for not knowing every single detail. Anyone who loves history would encourage others to learn, not insult them.

          • Doc Holliday

including some posts attacking and defending Sarah. The left wants us off WeinerGate, and they seem to be doing it with RevereGate. Give me a break, we are better than this.

            Got my cities wrong.

          • gekster

            Got my reply wrong also.
            I better start paying attention.

          • Doc Holliday

I am sure you know a fair share about history. The thing is though, kids are taught a bit about the Revolution then it is pretty much dropped. Most who graduate college are not required to know about the American Revolution. Now, minority lesbian foreign basket weavers are part of the core curriculum.

BTW, if you and anyone else want a fast read, check out these two books. Rise to Rebellion and The Glorious Cause by Jeff Shaara. He is the son of Michael Shaara, the author of the Killer Angels. Technically these books are called “historical fiction” but the people and actions are real, the author just throws in some dialogue that can not be proven to keep the story reading like a novel.

they were the troops of the Crown, there were troubles in Boston for sure, but there was nothing particularly unusual about Redcoats stationed there. While Colonists had their militas, the understanding was that the British Regulars were the defense force, even for the colonies, ie. French and Indian War.

The British troops under Francis Smith went on a mission to take a cache of arms at Concord. The colonists were expecting the mission, that is why they were already prepared to warn each other whether the troops were coming by land or by sea. American colonists had many spies in Boston, many were women who cavorted with the highest ranks in the British service.

It is true there were warrants out for a few colonists, but that did not call for a military mission of this size. Either way, the mission was a failure, the British columns were harassed until a near routing on their long slog back to Boston.

    • gekster

It’s the other side of the coin of her rabid haters. ;)

  • Martin Knight

This is turning out to be another nudge-wink “Palin is sooooo stupid” episode, only for the smirking “sophisticates” to find out she was actually right i.e. “Party like it’s 1773″; the “sophisticates” all smirked sophisticatedly because they all *knew* the Boston Tea Party happened in 1776 (“that stupid Palin! HA HA HA HA …huh?”).

Well now, it would appear that Paul Revere did warn the British that he had alerted every settlement in the area when they captured him on his ride. In his own words …

I observed a Wood at a Small distance, & made for that. When I got there, out Started Six officers, on Horse back, and orderd me to dismount;-one of them, who appeared to have the command, examined me, where I came from,& what my Name Was? I told him. it was Revere, he asked if it was Paul? I told him yes He asked me if I was an express? I answered in the afirmative. He demanded what time I left Boston? I told him; and aded, that their troops had catched aground in passing the River, and that There would be five hundred Americans there in a short time, for I had alarmed the Country all the way up. He imediately rode towards those who stoppd us, when all five of them came down upon a full gallop; one of them, whom I afterwards found to be Major Mitchel, of the 5th Regiment, Clapped his pistol to my head, called me by name, & told me he was going to ask me some questions, & if I did not give him true answers, he would blow my brains out. He then asked me similar questions to those above. He then orderd me to mount my Horse, after searching me for arms.He then orderd them to advance, & to lead me in front. When we got to the Road, they turned down towards Lexington. When we had got about one Mile, the Major Rode up to the officer that was leading me, & told him to give me to the Sergeant. As soon as he took me, the Major orderd him, if I attempted to run, or any body insulted them, to blow my brains out. We rode till we got near Lexington Meeting-house, when the Militia fired a Voley of Guns, which appeared to alarm them very much.

Look, there are lots of reasons to oppose Palin. The least valid are the ones that rest on her supposed lack of intelligence or lack of knowledge.

    • Martin Knight

It’s unfortunate, but, like Ron Paul (who has many other liabilities) Palin’s greatest liabilities are turning out to be her supporters.

      • http://908StraightSt.wordpress.com/ mbecker908

Lord knows the Shriners don’t help her here and in general with Republicans who are capable of thought processes. Heck, even the rational Sarah supporters are embarrassed by the fools.

The “no” part is that she has a tendancy to make what seem to be disconnected statements and then she lets the media set the agenda because she ingores them and lets idiots like Cal mount her defense. Since the fools like to compare her to Reagan, here’s one. President Reagan – and candidate Reagan for that matter – going back to his run for Governor, did not let the media set his agenda. People loved him for it and thats one reason why he could recover from polling problems in 79-80 to win. Palin just comes out the fool and it’s unfortunate because even I think shes better than that.

    • Goldwater_Conservative

please come back some, that limb isnt strong enough to support you that far out. She wasnt talking about that, in fact she mentioned “riding” and “lanterns” so she was trying to reffer to the famous ride. She mentioned warning the British so they wont take our arms, does that sound like she meant the British army? And why would she mention this, its not in any way patriotic and certianly not something to be proud of? Yes, she is stupid, she has been doing her best for 3 years now trying to convice you of this simple fact, but you will never see the obvious.
