This whole post is bunk for so many reasons:

    1) This vote is to give Peurto Ricans a chance to vote in a non-binding plebiscite, not grant PR Statehood. Congress is not promising to follow Peurto Rico

Make no mistake, this vote is part of the “Republicans hate hispanics” meme which is something we should be concerned about.

Puerto Rico would be such a net receiver of tax monies that it would become the most blue state in the union (DC is not a state).

Puerto Rican statehood should be opposed, regardless of whether the vote is “binding” or not.

I mean like someone who honestly believe he will go to Hell if he votes in favor of abortion rights.

PR is a strongly Catholic island, and the Church actually holds sway over it’s members (unlike many of the “Catholics” currently in congress).

I don’t understand what is difficult about this: Peurto Rico is an American Territory! They already receive tax monies. Accepting as a State will cost virtually no more than with it as Commonwealth status. However, as a State, PR residents would have to pay federal income tax.

When was the last time a solidly blue state elected a Republican governor and Republican super-majorities in both houses? PR did so in 2008.

I’m not saying that PR would be a red state, but I think the meme about it being a solid blue state is seriously over-played.

I might believe that there are some true fiscally liberal/socially liberal politicians in places like Poland, so I maybe you are right about Puerto Rico.

Washington DC changes people, so lets just avoid finding out.

doesn’t think its a good idea either. Regardless of whether it ends up being the end, it does appear that the New Progressive Party in PR is fully expecting statehood. Their 2008 campaign stated “The New Progressive Party adopts the Tennessee Plan as an additional strategy for the decolonization and the claim for the admission of Puerto Rico as the 51st State of the United States of America.”

Beck is often dramatic and over the top but I don’t trust any of this on the simple basis that Obama doesn’t do anything thats in the interest of the country, only his agenda.

I don’t listen to Beck since he isn’t available where I live, but I think the following article lays out many of the problems with his discussion of PR Statehood.
