Sunday Cultural Upliftenment Open Thread

Here\'s to high cvltvre....

I’m snowed in up here, so I guess it falls to me to generate the Sunday open thread.

First, some brief cultural upliftenment. Many people are scared off by opera - and it is an acquired taste.

But the most common mistake is to attempt to jump in too deep; it’s better to start with something simpler, like the classic “The Abduction of Figaro”….

You are so culterally insensitive.

Oh wait Western Civilization has produced the most beautiful music, artwork, best science and democratic/equaltity political philosophy.

I sure hope Obama apologizes to the rest of the world for this, it is so unfair.

PDQ Bach! Glorious. I like "The Seasonings" myself.

My favorite song by the Chorus is, “To curry favor, favor curry.”

Thanks for making Sunday more refined. :)

My favorite in "The Seasonings"

is “Open Sesame Seed”. I especially like the end (”C Sharp”).

But I get the biggest kicks out of the Shickele stuff (Unbegun Symphony, etc.)

Thanks. I'll have to check out the Unbegun.

Hilarious.

Then there is Wagner

If you have never seen an opera, do not start with Wagner. Any performance that requires a dinner break is waaaaaaaaaay too long.

The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who, in times of great moral crisis, maintain their neutrality.

Wagner Without Words is a collection of Wagner

themes but without the words; great stuff! About 40 minutes of Wagner is my limit, but some of it is really good music to drive a tank across Poland to.

In Vino Veritas

This is the first opera I ever saw.

I was on a date with my now wife, Janet. Enjoy.

Well, enough about opera.

I wanna talk about trolls. I have absolutely no independent data to back up the following claim, but I’m going to make it anyway. Because I can, that’s why.

The wheels are coming off the BO bus. How do I know this? Because we are being overrun with trolls. Every thread. All the time. Nasty little brutish defensive trolls.

Just like in the campaign when Palin was introduced and McCain went up in the polls, the little morons came over here and tried to pee all over the place. Then when BO pulled back in front, they kinda pulled back their horns and went back under the bridge.

Now, every time BO opens his mouth and embarrasses us or comes up with one of his stupid cockamamie ideas, the American people kinda make little clucking sounds like: I didn’t think he would do that. And the trolls apparently hear the clucking and come here.

Just watch. This most recent time it was when he went overseas and expressed his humble nature (which is somewhat diametrically opposed to the “I won” attitude we keep seeing over here) the trolls were all over the place.

Next time he does something that the majority of Americans are not crazy about, they’ll be back. I think we should mock them until they cry before Neil or Moe gets there. Just for the fun of it.

The problem with America is stupidity. I’m not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why don’t we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

And as long as we're off the subject of opera

I think I have noticed something. It seems to me that America appears to have prostrated itself before the altar of liberal socialism.

There are not many signs of the independent spirit that made us throw off the yoke of tyranny. But then BO got elected and the gun sales went through the roof. Our biggest local dealer is in the process of building a new wing.

I wonder if this is somewhat like a slightly rowdy newly married cowboy who has recently started going to church. He seems pretty tame and if you just saw him from a distance, you’d think he had put the old life behind him and was now totally domesticated.

But scratch the domestication and there’s still that same old cowboy, just covered by a veneer of stable family man. And as long as nothing ever happens to upset his apple cart, a family man he will remain and raise a cute little passel of children and enjoy his old years with his wife.

But if the bad guys come through, you can throw him a gun, he’ll jump on a horse and the veneer comes flying off in the wind. And gun sales have gone through the roof. Those DC metrosexuals had better watch out for the cowboy.

The problem with America is stupidity. I’m not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why don’t we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

I love cowboys! Grew up watching Saturday morning westerns!

Good analogy, ‘Itbnice’. I don’t even care what color hat they wear!

Seriously, I hope you are right. I’d like to believe that there are enough true Americans left, that will respond, stop and repair whatever damage is done by this leftist administration. There are years of insidious damage already to repair. Sort of like we didn’t know that we had a termite infestation until the walls came crumbling down.

On “mocking trolls” have to be quick, Moe and Neil are fast. Bring on the cowboys!

Resistance to tyrants is obedience to God.
Benjamin Franklin

Hah, I've played PDQ Bach before

Finrod Sunday, April 5th at 5:27PM EDT (link)

Back in concert band in college, it was a close race between the PDQ Bach and the Theme from “Candide” as to which was weirder.
