Romney… Stand Up, Or Stand Down!

I’m seriously conflicted. I’m beginning to have flashbacks to the presidential race of 2008. There are some disturbing parallels between the candidacy of the hapless John “you can’t do it my friend” McCain and the present candidate, the anointed of the Washington Republican Establishment. It’s akin to the feeling I got when I realized that George Bush was anything but the conservative he positioned himself to be.

Americans have been watching with an almost preternatural intensity as this all too real drama plays out on our national stage. Mitt Romney ran for the nomination of the Republican Party like a junkyard dog… destroying candidate after candidate and devil-take-the-hindmost. It was readily apparent that he didn’t much care where the bottom of the swamp was either. Though many of us disliked his tactics… and they were short, brutal and to the point, we salved ourselves with the thought… “just wait for the campaign this summer and fall, Romney will chew up Obama and spit him out, we’ve got a tiger in our tank”.

Readers will remember that I was never that high on Romney. I saw the potential millstone that ‘Romneycare’ presented to the Republican effort to oust the Marxist Obama, as unfair as it may be. ‘Romneycare’ as it has been dubbed is, and was, nothing compared to the utter devastation that will be Obama’s legacy to this country should the healthcare law not be overturned.

Mitt Romney’s attempt to bring sanity to Massachusetts health care costs, through a state mandated health care system, was admirable in its aims. Romney should have known it would have been vulnerable to a Democratic state legislature which couldn’t wait to turn the law into a tax-and-spend opportunity, which was then followed by the election of a liberal Democrat governor after Romney’s departure who turned the law into something totally different than its original intent. What Romney did was to remediate some of the state’s onerous health care regulations. What Barack Hussein Obama has done is to enslave an entire nation to the false gods of liberal governance.

Romney has got to start listening to some different advice. From what I’ve observed, he should dump his advisers now. Whoever advised Romney to allow photo ops from ‘The Boathouse’ and ‘The Monster’ speed boat while the Anointed One is out campaigning, schmoozing senior citizens and sucking down brewskis with constituents, should be in some other line of work… period.

Romney has lost his nerve… or someone high up in his campaign has. Running from the fight is serving none of us well. No incumbent president since Jimma’ Boy Cata has been as vulnerable as Barack Obama. What’s infuriating me and many other patriots, at least according to the comments we get, and we get a bunch… Romney wants us to trust him to bring this country out of the darkness that is this ‘depression’. He wants us to fight for him.
When is he going to fight for us?

My guess is…he won’t…he’s a typical Moderate Republican who’ll never trash a Democrat with the same relish and abandon that he attacks his conservative allies….

He’s just proving himself now to be what he’s always been…an unprincipled, arrogant know it all that is more comfortable licking the backsides of Democrats while cocking his leg and pissing all over his base!

    • aesthete

in saying that most of the popular “conservative” pols won’t fight for us, either. Politicians are not the solution; they are tools (both figuratively and literally, heh) which require constant supervision and direction on the part of voters and activists.

    • wintermute

He attacks Obama all the time… what do you want, him to use expletives? And for the record, the heaviest attacks during the primaries were all from 3rd parties, not from Romney himself. Thats his established M.O. so expecting any different isn’t justifiable.

He is running a good campaign, acting like the sky is falling is counter productive. For what ever reason you are still sore from the primaries, thats politics, get over it. He wasn’t my first choice either but he got the most votes. Now Im going to help push him into the end zone.

      • AceInTX

Obama has left a half dozen curve balls hanging low and on the outside edge of the plate that could have been grand slam home runs…and Granny Romney who never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity has taken the string instead of making his swing for the fences….Check out Krouthammer and Kristol from this week….I’m not alone in this

It’s only July, so maybe the Romney team figures it’s best to watch the Obama ship sink a little more for now, what do I know?

If Romney wins, leads the repeal ObamaCare, and leads in reigning in runaway regulation, then I guess I’d take that outcome today (versus the disaster alternative of an Obama reelection).

But that’s not how I would prefer for Romney to play it.

          • AceInTX

and that’s what Romney is doing….it’s boring…it’s annoying….and it’ll be a loser in the end if he continues.

          • commonsenseobserver

And I think Romney does need to debunk the false claims rapidly and counter-attack when the time is ripe, which they do not think is now (???)

But let me say this- he deserved his vacation. Now is time to get back to work.

          • Melody Warbington (rwm52)

I don’t begrudge Romney his wealth or time spent with his family, but we’re in the fight of our lives for the country. It’s going to require sacrifice. If Romney wants to lead that fight and be the President of the greatest country on earth, he’s going to have to show he’s willing to sacrifice as well. Why should he ask for my hard-earned money and expect me to pony up when he has time and money to ride the lake on his power boat?

I probably won’t take a vacation this year, and in fact, may use some vacation days to go with a group to campaign in swing states. At this point, that may very well depend on Romney’s attitude and his VP choice.

        He’s the nominee…I get that…I’m on board…but I’m uninspired.

From the Obama’s Immigration power grab to his campaign’s response to the Obamacare decision….it’s been one fumble, gaff or missed opportunity after the other….you’ve got the tea party fired up now like a Thoroughbred trapped in the gates fighting the bit and doing everything it can to get the jump coming out of the gate…..and run the race for Romney…and the campaign insists on playing it safe and not to lose instead of making the case for what he’ll do and why his policies would be better than Obama’s.

America is ready for a change….but we get nothing from the Romney camp about what he’d do differently than Obama.

        • commonsenseobserver

I may not love Romney, but I dislike Obama more.
I do agree that recalibration is needed.

          • AceInTX

it takes more than disliking the other guy to win elections….that’s all I, Skip, Krouthammer, Kristol and others are saying….get in the Game Mitt and quit playing defense!

          • APA Guy

Obama’s economic record is digging his political grave at the moment. The last thing Mitt Romney needs to do is give the other side a reason to shape the narrative to reflect something Romney says.

This is why Obama, MSNBC, etc. are whining about wanting to “move forward”. They know that a close look at how Obama has destroyed this economy will spell DOOM for him this November.

There will come a time for the political firestorm from Mitt Romney to demolisg Obama. Now is not that time. The Reagan election model of 1980 says wait to strike until the public is completely discontented with the failing incumbent. That time is rapidly approaching with each passing crappy jobs report…bank on it.

          • commonsenseobserver

After that, if he still remains out of the arena, it’ll be too late.

But I think the Clinton Rapid Response playbook, which they used early on, still has its virtues.

          • AceInTX

they’ve fumbled a couple opportunities lately because they are reacting to events instead of creating their own events…and failing to plan for contingencies….the Obamacare tax fumble is the most obvious example of this….

and the single minded focus on the economy to the exclusion of other issues is poison base enthusiasm and GOTV efforts as well…

Playing safe is not the way to win and is more likely to lose than win in the end.

          • commonsenseobserver

            So now, the economy.

But since Axelrod thinks that Romney’s too secretive, Romney could release his tax returns and then challenge the WH to show the same commitment to transparency and accountability by complying with the subpoenas.

          • APA Guy

That’s exactly what Clinton’s people did to Bush Sr. and what Reagan did to Carter. I don’t remember either of them firing both barrels every day the first week of July…in fact, Reagan was losing to Carter early in nearly every national poll. Once the economy got bad enough, he pounded and HARD.

It’s too early for what you are suggesting, but I agree that it has to come at some point this summer.

          • AceInTX

How about talking about what Obama is doing wrong and what Mitt would do differently?

How about drawing a distinction between Obama’s Ideology and principles and contrast them with Republican ideals and principles?

          • gekster

            Obama = marxist

            Romney = capitalist

That’s enough for me right now.

          • APA Guy

The absolute worst thing Romney can do at this point is give Obama and the MSM something else to talk about other than scrambling to defend O’s terrible economy. That’s why Romney brushed off Bain attacks…as did the American public.

No one gives a rat’s about Bain. They care about the lack of jobs and inflation of gas and food.

Trust me, the Romney who destroyed Newt Gingrich will surface in due time. It’s proven to be a successful approach for Romney to attack in a measured manner…and he has an enormous war chest to use toward that aim, but we have to be patient :)

          • commonsenseobserver

I trust he will do it when the time is right. And I believe he should, and must.

          • commonsenseobserver

People like Romney are responsible for unemployment, Obama’s only fault is that he can’t stop them.

Which is nonsense, of course, but I disagree that it wouldn’t work. It might.

          • kajun65

But tend to agree, He’s playing too much Defense!

  • gekster

Don’t feel too bad, you are not the only one.

    • APA Guy

I can’t understand for the life of me why people think Romney should be forcing the narrative or giving Dems ammo right now. The entire country is getting primed to turn on Obama as the economy gets worse and worse. Why not keep giving O rope and let him sink his own popularity?

Right now, Obama comes off as a blamer…blaming Bush, blaming congressional Republicans, blaming Santa Claus…EVERYONE but himself. It will only be a matter of time before the public tires of this so long as Romney keeps pointing it out.

There will be a time for Romney to pounce, but IMO that time has not yet arrived. Once it does, advocating lowering taxes and reminding the public, as Reagan did, that government continues to be the problem and not the solution will do the trick. Reminding the voting public of how the economy grew when Reagan cut taxes after a similar recession will then seal the deal.

Romney is playing this smart…frustrating at times, sure, but smart nevertheless.

      • gekster

Do you blow off the big fireworks first, or do you wait till last.
Myself, I start off with the small ones, and work my way up.

To many want to see the big ones first, just like the grandkids
Be patient with the small fireworks for now, the big ones will come.

      • JSobieski

If you mean win the election–you are probably right.

If you mean win the election in such a manner as to build a mandate for difficult things that need to be done—I believe Romney’s strategy is not well suited to the desired objective.

There are certain signs that Romney can send to indicate that he is serious about reforming government.

        • APA Guy

Now is not the time to take that bold stance. Half of the country is already with him in this race, and more stand to follow as the economy continues to flounder.

Once the fever reaches a boiling point, he can step in and provide that clear, capitalist alternative that the country will crave. Staking bold positions NOW, 4 months from Election Day and in accordance with the wishes of the left, takes powder out of his cannon IMO. Timing is everything in politics…as he proved in the primary when he took out some pretty big names in Republican politics. I think he’s smart to wait until the time is right, but that’s just my opinion.

          • commonsenseobserver

Like David Brooks said, however he knows.

When would be the right time in your opinion, though?

          • APA Guy

Once it seems as though O can make no more excuses for his crappy economy…

WHAM!!! Hit him with so many ads his head will spin.

            How will he respond?

He won’t be able to…the public will turn on him as surely as it did on Carter.

First, educating the public will take time. If Romney doesn’t make repetitive and somewhat detailed discourse on what he will do—the message will never get out there.

Second, Romney is a terrible candidate when he is ahead. His best moments came when he was in real danger. So if you are right and the future is a crescendo for Romney . . . .

Third, I disagree that that there is some fever that Romney can ride to a boiling point. Reagan didn’t reach that point until a week before the election. If Romney waits that long (Romney is no Reagan, and Obama is no Carter) Romney will never get there.

Given Romney’s past campaign experiences, it is unlikely as time goes on that Romney will try to educate the public or build a meaningful mandate. Romney’s instincts are to be a stealth candidate who runs on his experience, not on his plans.

It is merely delay. It will take YEARS to fix things and holding back until the moment is “right” is an invitation to delay.

          • gekster

Other than that, what do you think he should do, other than taking a calm approach to the smears coming at him.

          • JSobieski

My last sentence makes a lot of sense if you actually take a second to focus less on the DC game of short term politics.

Our problems are not going to be fixed quickly. To the contrary, it will require a sustained effort that will require sustained support from the pulic (otherwise the D’s will have their own version of 2010 in 2014).

The idea that Romney can just flip the substance switch at the “right time” in the future to establish that case is a flawed idea.

          • commonsenseobserver

Perhaps as part of a comprehensive package, I do recognise that it’ll be difficult to sell them if the public remains sympathetic to Obama. I think it’ll be better if he starts working on the basics now, then goes through the details with his veep so that they actually have something important and refreshing to talk about at the convention.

I think it’s rather clear that Obama will not be laying out his own plans either, for a while, so we’ve got a little leeway.

          • commonsenseobserver

I know a woman, a 2008 McCain voter, who wants to know how Romney’s tax cuts and regulatory reform will create jobs…(???!!!)

She’s just one example. We seem to have forgotten Reagan’s lessons.

          • http://impudent.edublogs.org/ kyle8

could figure out that you can’t tax, spend, borrow, and regulate your way to prosperity.

          • bbjaylive

I think Americans know all about supply-side economics. Cut taxes and repeal regulations is basically what Republicans default to if they can’t think of anything else to say. After the Bush tax cuts, I hardly think most Americans have any reason to think that supply-side economics works anymore. The economy isn’t at full output, so you have to have demand, if you are a business, you won’t hire if you don’t have enough sales. Consumers create jobs too.

          • http://libertynews.com/ mbecker908

With respect to “regulatory reform”, regulations add time, cost and uncertainty to new projects. They also add a significant amount of risk because they can be modified without Congressional action and the only solution is to sue or to stop.

There’s a city on the Atlantic seaboard that’s been trying to dredge their harbor so deeper draft ships can use their port. It would be an economic boon to the region. They first put the proposal on the table in the late 90s and so far nothing has been done because of environmental lawsuits. This has the potential to bring thousands of jobs to the area and they’ve been regulated out of existence.

Then there’s the little fish in California that has essentially shut down agriculture in the Central Valley turning the breadbasket of the West into a desert and destroying the economies of virtually every city and town along US 101. Endangered species act.

I believe there are something like 9 separate environmental boards that must be appeased if you want to open a manufacturing facility in Los Angeles county. Needless to say, no manufacturers are about to take on that challenge.

            I could go on forever.

The best way to make Obama less popular is to sell the country on a different way of looking at economics. Far better and easier to argue that Obama is simply wrong than it is to make him be unpopular.

Capitalism needs to be defended, and that defense requires articulation and education.

If Romney wins without a meaningful mandate, it will be a hollow victory.

What we are seeing among many conservatives is impatience. They see Obama struggling and want Romney to finish him off.

So do I…but not 4 months from Election Day. A lot can happen in four months…just look at 2008. The election was first going to be about Iraq – then the economy spun out of control, and suddenly the narrative changed.

In the case of 2012, I doubt the narrative will be anything but the economy, but there is no need for Mitt to unload his entire clip before the battle REALLY begins. Let O swim in the quicksand bed he has drawn for himself…THEN move in for the political kill.

Then, by virtue of choosing a conservative fire-breather for VP and on the cusp of what will almost certainly be another poor jobs report, the convention can serve as the springboard by which Romney, Republicans and the Super PACs launch full assaults on Obama with a message of lower taxes, less government, and restoring America’s greatness. They will never have a grander stage or a more engaged electorate to do so than at that very moment.

That’s how I’d play it, anyway…but I’m just a simple Hoosier, so take it for what it’s worth :)

          • acat

and if he uses it to sound a Reaganesque message, something that resonates, I think it’ll work.

I also don’t see Romney picking a “conservative fire-breather” as veep .. if only because I’m not sure he needs a fire-breather… what he needs is someone who can be presented as a solid, competent candidate.

Given the inevitable focus on energy (fastest route to jump-start the economy) and healthcare (obamacare rewrite) … Bobby Jindal is looking better and better … and isn’t a fire-breather, but is a solid conservative with a great track record.

I could see Jindal being chosen as well, but in my heart I think ultimately it will be Rubio. He’s from a crucial battleground state…he’s awesomely conservative…he’s young (and therefore able to step in and run after Romney’s 2nd term)…and he’s getting to be more and more known nationally with each passing day.

It’s a job that doesn’t require intelligence, for one. However, it does require charisma during the campaign. He’s goofy-looking. Romney is boring enough. My point is that if Romney doesn’t build public support for what are difficult reforms (such as for example Medicare reform) then he won’t be able to get those reforms enacted into law.

W spent more time in 2004 talking about SS reform than Romney spends in 2012 talking about entitlement reform.

It isn’t a case that can be made in the closing weeks of a campaign, it has to be a sustained effort to educate the public

I am optimistic that Romney will win, but not so optimistic about what will be achieved if Romney doesn’t develop a somewhat specific mandate..

but people are nervous. All of us care deeply about this election, and Romney’s responses to Obamacare have been tepid at best. Axelrod is trying to define Romney right now through his Bain outsourcing attacks, Swiss bank accounts, and his usual class warfare mantra.

Romney needs a lesson out of the Clinton playbook, in that you answer every attack with an answer. No matter how short or how measured, you don’t leave the question or accusation hanging in people’s minds.

This election cycle is different from all others in that people are scared, and they’re listening to what candidates say and don’t say earlier in this election cycle than previous ones. I, for one, would like to see the Romney that we saw in Florida, right now. Give Obama a small taste of what he’s in for later.

Besides that, he needs to can the corporate speak, if he can, and “talk to” people, because I genuinely think he’s a likable fellow one-on-one. Romney’s problem is the past, and what happened to his father, which I understand he took very hard. As a result, he’s so risk averse, that he’s hurting himself. Something Bill Kristol mentioned yesterday.

          aren’t even paying attention yet.

That you and I are having this conversation on a political board should indicate that the people here are interested .. not that all voters are interested… the distinction is important.

Look for replies from the Romney campaign to get much pointier after GOP-CON.

For those who are looking around now, there’s a good bit of information on the Romney campaign web site; for those who just want a reassurance that Romney has a plan (and, as with “War and Peace”, there’s more who want to say they’ve read it than who actually have read it…) well .. they can look at the Romney campaign web site index and be satisfied.

this is not a normal election cycle. Oh, I know, we say that every 4 years, but this time I do believe it’s different. People are more engaged, because their gut tells them that this time, their vote, REALLY MATTERS.

I’m not pontificating that Romney show all his ammo at this point, but he has to step it up, because later in the season when, as you say, voters will pay attn, hopefully his silence will not come back to haunt him. Axelrod is trying to define Romney, along with his allied MSM, and if he succeeds, by the time the GOP Con comes along, it may be too late.

Regarding the Romney campaign website, been there. I actually read the 59 point plan. But as Rush said earlier today, to paraphrase, ‘can anyone remember one point.’

several direct shots, and has directed the shots back at Obama while moving the conversation to the economy.

Yes, this is a different election, no argument .. but so far Romney hasn’t been labeled. Between his performance thus far, and his primary performance, I don’t think Axelrod is going to succeed in moving Romney off the economy.

The plan is there for you to read .. the plan is there for those who don’t want to read *but want to know there is a plan* to be aware of. For now, that’s enough.

If the Romney campaign starts going off after every Obama distraction, that puts Obama in charge…. The current “swiss bank account” nonsense is nothing new regarding Romney .. but it’s also not *important*.

If someone points out that Romney’s wealthy, my reply is “Yeah, he earned it saving companies, and saving jobs”.

If someone points out that Romney has a Swiss bank account, point out that Obama has Swiss donors.

The material almost writes itself, and if a cat can do it, surely Team Romney can.

Joey Biden tells the truth and Barack Obama calls it a gaffe..

don’t you think the media has become much broader – as in many, many more cable channels instead of just 3 major networks? Plus internet, plus hundreds of publications, etc., etc. And, at the same time, the mega-media are also much less interested in even appearing to be UNbiased now than they were during the Clinton campaign. How do you think Romney should “get the word out” exactly? It is really hard for Romney to get a response to any attack “published” in enough places for a majority of the sheeple to see/hear it. They don’t pay attention to much of it as it is and so much of it is biased. Unless Romney pays to run ads on every reality TV show, many of them will never see a Romney “response”. And – if they do – they will most definitely forget about whatever the issue was by November. Patience. Patience. And pray. A lot.

My family and I have been volunteering at the St. Petersburg Romney Victory Headquarters. In a state where over 1.2 million registered Republicans DID NOT VOTE in 2008, turnout and organization will be key. I can assure you Romney’s organization is much more on par with the ’04 Bush campaign, which was as organized as Obama’s ’08 machine. Considering McCain only lost FL by 250, 000 votes(roughly), we are in pretty good shape at this point being down only 1-2 pts. Also of note, Obama is spending A TON of money on ads here, with not much movement in his direction. I liken it to a boxer who takes several power shots from his opponent, but doesn’t go down. Ohio is in a similar position, with approximately one million registered Republicans sitting out the ’08 election. North Carolina should be a fairly comfortable win for Romney, as Obama barely won it four years ago in spite of outspending McCain 10:1 there. Iowa has swung from a +100,000 voter edge for Dems in ’08 to a +21,000 edge for Repubs. currently. Virginia makes me a little nervous because of all the gov’t workers, and there doesn’t appear to be much movement in terms of registration.

Maybe Perry, but FOX and the drive-by media unrelentingly focused on his oops moment. Pawlenty wussed out during the debate, and the conservatives went after Perry. No one attacked Romney’s record, and as a result, he coasted to the nomination and was unprepared to defend his own record. Romney doesn’t want to talk about Romneycare or his Bain record. He wants to keep playing it safe and sticking to his message of “Obama isn’t working.”

For those of us not drinking the koolaid in 2008, we were never deceived as to who Obama is. He has always been a tax and spend liberal who wants to “fundamentally transform America.” He attended Wright’s church and was much closer to Ayers than the media would admit. He was a member of the New Party who believed the Democrats were not radical enough.

Obama’s plan is working just fine. An overwhelming majority of the nation is opposed to it. He didn’t run on mandates or tax increases. Romney needs to hit him over and over again. “The economy is sluggish, because job creators know taxes are about to be raised by Obamacare.” But we knew this about Romney. He can’t defend his record in MA, and conservatives didn’t make him during the primaries. In 2008, it was a different story, and that’s why he lost to McCain, didn’t even come close to beating him. But now that the 2008 election is over, Romney has rewritten history to say McLame made a deal with Huckabee and cheated him of his rightful nomination. Truth is Romney only likes going after conservatives and only through his surrogates then.

Romney must lead, and not expect the sinking economy alone to pull Obama under. O-Force One will have 52 percent of the country on food stamps, disability, or unemployment in a few short weeks. Government dependence de jour.

America is afraid. Romney MUST address the growing fear in the middle income groups…..and provide inspiring and confident leadership. I don’t know if Romney has it in him, to become a bold Reagan.

Romney must speak to not only the MISTAKES and excesses of the Obama regime, but of the Bush administration as well.

They only have 150K per show. It could be Republican-lite to begin with and then up it over time. That’s how we get more national airtime.
