From Allahpundit over at Hot Air.
There are many ways to lose a presidential election. John McCain is losing in a way that threatens to take the entire Republican Party down with him.
Here’s the link to Frum’s article in the Washington Post. The Post, FYI, just ran an article by another conservative refusenik, Kathleen Parker, this past Friday.
Funny, but I don’t recall the GOP’s outlook being as grim as Frum paints it out to be. Conservative voices I respect say that this thing isn’t over yet.
It will be a tough year for Republicans, no doubt. But Frum is talking about a cataclysm.
Maybe, with this article, he’s trying to help his own cause. Follow me here.
Frum has been one of the leading conservative critics of Palin, right behind Parker and Peggy Noonan.
Now, if McCain/Palin pull this out, seems to me that Frum and Parker are left in political Sibera.
Maybe Frum knows that.
Maybe he’s doing his best to help beat McCain, so he and Kathleen won’t be left sitting out in the cold come November 5th.
For example, McCain and Palin need as much media attention as they can get. Frum has to know that the media wants to talk about anything EXCEPT stuff that helps McCain.
Frum just set himself up for a week of talk show appearances, explaining/elaborating on what he meant in this article.
Looks as if David is taking care of Number One!
And Kathleen Parker is angling to replace Elizabeth Hasselbeck on “The View.”

I say: Forget David Frum! (n/t)
Anteater (Diary) Saturday, October 25th at 10:37PM EDT (link)Frum makes no sense.
PSDA (Diary) Saturday, October 25th at 10:42PM EDT (link)He is proposing an utterly false choice, and one that is based on false premises.
For starters, whatever you think of the McCain campaign, Republican problems in this election are not due to the McCain candidacy. They were widely predicted even before McCain was the nominee. It’s an off year for Republicans because of Bush’s low popularity, public attitudes toward the Iraq war, and most recently the economic meltdown.
Deserting McCain does NOTHING to change these fundamental dynamics for Congressional candidates. Nothing at all.
And you can’t simply abandon your presidential candidate in an effort to save congressional seats. How would that work anyway?
No matter what, the Presidential race IS the biggest game in town, and people will be going to polls for that reason above any other. If you don’t strengthen your Presidential candidate to the maximum extent possible, then fewer people who would vote for the downticket candidates of your party are even going to show up on election day. It’s that simple.

And now, a few post-first-coffee-of-the-morning thoughts?
smagar (Diary) Sunday, October 26th at 9:07AM EDT (link)1) Why is Frum doing this? The blog posts I’ve read recently don’t make the Senate situation sound as dire as Frum makes it out to be. I wonder if Frum is reading less-reliable polls and jumping to a conclusion.
2) Frum has to know that his article will be a buzz-kill—at exactly the time that McCain needs to generate buzz.
3) I’m confident that, if John McCain saw reliable polling that he was going to lose, he’d do the honorable thing and expend all remaning GOP ammunition on saving a viable GOP minority—a minority which, if I many point out, he’d most likely lead.
Does Frum want to place himself on record asserting that John McCain is willing to destroy the GOP brand in order to mount one last Don Quixote run for the White House? He certainly seems to be implying that here.
4) Lastly, a GOP Senate minority can only limit the damage a President Obama will do. Our best hope is to keep the Presidency in GOP and conservative hands. While there’s still a shot for doing that, we need to try.
I wonder if Frum has ulterior motives here.

Why not both
Republican_Michigander (Diary) Sunday, October 26th at 10:22AM EDT (link)Unless the beltway class has a significant interest in McCain/Palin losing….oh wait.
I voted for Palin (and that guy she’s running with). I also voted for Jack Hoogendyk for Senate and Mike Rogers for Congress. Those aren’t either/or propositions.
