Obamacare Bullies and Punishes The Children

Well, the young adults. However, since 26 year olds are now still considered children under Obamacare, encouraged to mooch of their parents and their insurance policies like new millennium slackers, I feel safe in calling them children. The Democrats, with this bill, are, thus, harming The Children ™ and the newly minted as adults thirty-somethings.

From Hot Air (emphasis mine):

Under the health care overhaul, young adults who buy their own insurance will carry a heavier burden of the medical costs of older Americans — a shift expected to raise insurance premiums for young people when the plan takes full effect.

Beginning in 2014, most Americans will be required to buy insurance or pay a tax penalty. That’s when premiums for young adults seeking coverage on the individual market would likely climb by 17 percent on average, or roughly $42 a month, according to an analysis of the plan conducted for The Associated Press. The analysis did not factor in tax credits to help offset the increase.

The higher costs will pinch many people in their 20s and early 30s who are struggling to start or advance their careers with the highest unemployment rate in 26 years.

Great news, huh, oh so hip youth? No jobs for you, yet you will be *forced* to purchase pricier insurance or you will be fined. Like Ed Morrissey, this brought to my mind the irony of all the liberal groups out there who used the youth to push for Obamacare. Primarily, Rock the Vote and their PSA from December. A reminder:

First, you must get past the way that they ask young people to pledge “mind, body and soul”  (no, really) to a piece of legislation and, by extension, the President and a party. Then, worse, the way they are trying to encourage young people to use their bodies as sexual weapons.  Where are the feminists decrying this objectification of our young women, by the way? Rock the Vote is basically saying: “Oh noes! Don’t support the socialization of medicine? We totally won’t kedoodle you.”  If they are really concerned with health, shouldn’t they be discouraging promiscuity with strangers? Although, I suppose it makes sense to them; the left really only knows how to kedoodle America.

Anyway, if you can get past that, the result is the utter stupidity of urging youth to support a bill that actually punishes the young. They will be forced to buy policies they do not need and will pay much higher premiums than the elderly.

You see, this is not only a Redistribution of Wealth, but also a Redistribution of Health.  Younger adults, who do not require the same amount of medical attention and care per year as older adults, will now be subsidizing the medical care of the older adults. Younger adults are better off buying catastrophic insurance policies and paying for regular visits, only when needed, out of pocket. They will no longer be able to do so. They will be required to purchase the works, which premiums will subsidize the “riskier” and more resource-needy of the insurance pool.

And, wait, Obama youth! There’s even more to it. With this new law, insurance companies are bound, by law, to not raise insurance premiums on higher risk groups, like the elderly. How do you think they will do that? By spreading the cost and passing it on to you!

At issue is the insurance industry’s practice of charging more for older customers, who are the costliest to insure. The new law restricts how much insurers can raise premium costs based on age alone.

Insurers typically charge six or seven times as much to older customers as to younger ones in states with no restrictions. The new law limits the ratio to 3-to-1, meaning a 50-year-old could be charged only three times as much as a 20-year-old.

The rest will be shouldered by young people in the form of higher premiums.

This is that “sharing” and “being fair” thing to which y’all pay such lip service. Not so “fair” now, is it? Well, at least you can all take consolation in something. You threatened to “hold out” with people who do not support this legislation. That is the majority of this country, even after its passage. Therefore, at least there is now less of a chance of you procreating. Whew!

Their claim was “If young people tend to not buy insurance, how can there be an increase? 17% of 0 is 0.”

They proceeded to ignore my response pointing out the government mandate.

will be subsidizing a dependent 26 year old.

Ya think there will be great debates on Congress on extending the definition of a “dependent” like they already have about other benefits, unemployment, to wit?

Elections are not free if their outcome determines whether you get health care.

…may not be fair, but it is often true.

My wife and I now insure two adult children away at college, and the coverage is quite reasonable. I’m glad (OK, I hope) they’ll be on their own before Obamacare takes hold.

    against this monstrosity hit?

….And I agree, that video was sickening.

    215 days to election 2010

…political ad I’ve seen since Demon Sheep. Basically the message is, “Some dorky and uncool people are against this for their own selfish or stupid reasons, so shun them”.

Par for the course for today’s lib.

The left can maybe raise cash to cover the HCR by putting our daughters to work. Wow, a legacy to be proud of! Thanks barry -wait my baby just walked into the room -

“guess what sweetie, mommy’s found a great way for you to get more votes for our side!”

  • JHancock

who are just starting out who are getting screwed. First of all the economy is bad, second of all the government is nationalizing formerly lucrative industries, third taxes are getting raised, and now we have to pay more for our healthcare and the healthcare of the families we are thinking of staring. As a 28 year old about to graduate from Med School and start a family-I am P155ed off!!! My field just got a pay cut + government intrusion AND I

    • Leopard1996

I am 35, and I knew from jumpstreet what Bambi was all about, but try telling that to others my age, and they would not listen.

      • JHancock

Brains are wasted on the old

If the young were smarter and the old sprier it could be a perfect world…

        • Leopard1996

I mean when I heard Bambi make his speech during the DNC for Kerry and pretty much everything out of his mouth was the government can do this, and government will do that, I knew what he was about and I did not like it, and when he started his campaign I knew he was going to be bad news, and attempted to debate that with everyone I could, but not many would listen to me.

How ironic that the two-thirds of the under thirty crowd will be paying the bulk of the bill once the US is 20-30 trillion in debt

    • 6eorge Jetson

In twenty years, each retiree will be supported by just two active workers (JHancock & Leopard1996, for example).

And what did the Dems just do to address this insolvency? They whipped out the credit card to pile another $2.5 trillion of debt on you over the next 10 years with another entitlement that will eventually need to be cut when the other people’s money runs out.

Plus they did nothing to address the third party payer system that incentivizes health care consumers to spend as much as they can as long as claims are approved.

Entitlements traditionally have paid generous benefits

      • JHancock

it is the “moral hazard” of low & no co-pay or co-insurance. If you could pay $10 and get an unlimited year supply of gasoline and your choice of cars-would you drive a Prius or two Ferraris and a Hummer. I’d take the sports cars thanks!!

The same hold true for health care–people need to pay a percentage of their care up to an uncomfortable % of their own net worth until the remaining care is free. (for example 30% copay for routine stuff and 20% 80% co-insurance until 25-30% total net worth is depleated for serious emergencies and sickness, then the insurance can cover the rest.

      • Leopard1996

Sorry, I forgone a good amount of my income to save up in my 401k plan, through out the years, I am guessing at least 21,600 on average over my current career, and now they want to pull those results of my saving into the abyss that is social security. Sorry, but I gotta say screw that.

    • rightwingmom52

I can’t wait until my son (who’s in his rebellious stage) and his liberal friends get out of college and start working in the real world and then realize Obamaworld isn’t the utopia they were told it would be. In reality, everyone raised after FDR has been screwed for years via social security, medicare and medicaid. It’s just getting worse.

  • renoite

Not that this or anything MSNBC reports is true :)

Lot of young people over the age of 26, make lower wages (lack work experience and have to work their way up the pay scale). Plus they seem to eat a lot of fast food also. So in addition to Tax Payers subsidizing their Health Care expenses due to their lower wage scale, The One, Dirty Harry and Nanny announced today their planned take over of McDonalds. When this occurs and if you are on subsidized Health Insurance, you qualify for the Obama Meal Deal. You step up to the counter and order anything you like, and the person behind you in line pays for it.

    ——-
But back to the topic they need all those 27 plus year old people who never go to the hospital or visit a doctor to have to pay in because they need the extra funds so they can lower the costs others pay. Money in, no money out is their thinking-math.

    • davesinsanantonio

the person behind the counter gives you what the government demands you eat: bean sprouts, kale, and wheat germ, all without
      salt or salad dressing.

  • Common_Cents

Kinda like the only game in town monopolist college loan shark Obama letting college loan debts be forgiven faster if you work for one of his approved organizations.

Obama will rack up everyone in debt w/ phony protection money, then control you by forgiving your debt if you do what he says.

Aren’t there massive subsidies for “low wage” workers? I think it was up to 4x the poverty level (80K?) for a family?

It’s a long roundabout complicated interweaved way for Obamalitists to gain and exert CONTROL by redistributing wealth.

  • JHancock

Turns out leftist feminists don’t care about objectification as long as they can have sex without commitment or consequences

    • jdw4america

The term suggests that one is pro-woman. They are simply pro-abortion. We know this because by definition to hold the female contribution to the world’s population is contempt, not affirmation.

They only like babies when they can be bought from a paid incubator by homosexuals

      • JHancock

Real Feminists are proud of all that is FEMININE and fight for female viewpoints and contributions to be recognized and valued—–Leftists want Woman to basically be Men with different plumbing and discount the care-ethics and femininity that motherhood, marriage, and family can represent.

  • Menlo

So they save money by paying the “penalty” or not getting a tax refund? I don’t know why any healthy person would buy “insurance” or pay a penalty.

There really isn’t much force there, certainly not directly.

  • itrytobenice

My first political act was in the 6th grade when I got in trouble for defacing Jimmy Carter’s campaign posters in our little mock school election. My punishment was to make new posters so I made them all for Gerald Ford which got me in trouble again.

My first vote was for Ronald Magnamus Reagan and I’ve never weakened since. Yeah, I’m proud of it. All of it.

I’ve never been a stupid, brainwashed lib and now that I’m old, I have absolutely *no* tolerance for the people who excuse them because they’re young. None.

They’re not young. My dad, grandpa and uncles were risking their lives and winning WWI, WWII, and Korea when they were this age. I was working my way through school and trying to make a future for myself and my (hoped for) family.

These people are lazy (both intellectually and physically), spoiled, greedy, and foolish. All of those attributes are their own d*mn fault and when they are busting their humps in the ashes of our economy just to stay alive, I’ll laugh in their faces and tell them they made this bed, they can d*mn well lay in it. Welcome to the adult world where hope and change are what you get in Alice and Wonderland and if you don’t learn about it before, you can get your education in the School of Hard Knocks.

Youth must be served? To hell with that. Sign up for freedom or shut up and get out of the way.

    • rightwingmom52

I had a momentary lapse of idealism just out of high school and I’ve never made that mistake again. I’m a tried and true conservative and sometimes I can’t even stand some of my own family members who spout the “I vote for the individual, not the party.” If you have a “D” beside your name, I don’t care how “nice” you may be personally, you are associating yourself with the pro-abortion, big government, evil party. As far as I’m concerned, if their principles haven’t demanded they withdraw from the dems by now, they’re guilty by association.

the country suffers from apathy, but no one cares

    • gekster

There are a lot who cares.
I don’t think they are here because they don’t care.
You did say something about the diary.
      Must meen you care.
Can ya see where I’m going?

When you turn 18, you have 30 days to get out (although as long as my son is in college and works, he can live at home).
