Science is Hard – For Congressman Hank Johnson, At Least.

He's Worried About Danger of Guam Tipping Over

Geology is particularly perplexing, it seems. You see, according to Rep. Hank Johnson (D – GA), if there are too many military personnel stationed on Guam, the island might totally tip over. No, really! As Frank J. Fleming said on Twitter:

“If we put Marines on Guam, it could tip over. BTW, I’m now making your medical decisions.”

Think that’s hyperbole? Guess again! From The Hill (emphasis mine):

Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) is afraid that the U.S. Territory of Guam is going to “tip over and capsize” due to overpopulation.

Johnson expressed his worries during a House Armed Services Committee hearing on the defense budget Thursday.

Addressing Adm. Robert Willard, who commands the Navy’s Pacific Fleet, Johnson made a tippy motion with his hands and said sternly, “My fear is that the whole island will become so overly populated that it will tip over and capsize.”

Willard paused and said: “We don’t anticipate that.”

How Willard contained himself, I’ll never know.

Watch and enjoy. Or weep at the state of our alleged leaders. Or both. (Video after the jump)

Islands can become top heavy, you know! They just sort of float on the top of the water. It’s a very precarious situation!

What other cuckoo pants idea is next, Democrats? That humans are warming the Earth? Oh.

Of course, it is WE who don’t understand. Ace of Spades has the scoop; according to Johnson, we just didn’t get his nuanced concerns. Being wing nutty rubes and all:

So speaketh Rep. Johnson (D-I’mSuperSerial!):

“I wasn’t suggesting that the island of Guam would literally tip over I was using a metaphor to say that with the addition of 8,000 Marines and their dependents – an additional 80,000 people during peak construction on the tiny island with a population of 180,000 – could be a tipping point which could adversely affect the island’s fragile ecosystem and could overburden its stressed infrastructure. Having traveled to Guam last year, I saw firsthand how this beautiful – but vulnerable island – could easily become overburdened, and I was simply voicing my concerns that the addition of that many people could tip the delicate balance and do permanent harm to Guam.”

Ahh…he was using a metaphor, you see. He was speaking so gosh-darn figuratively that y’all just couldn’t comprehend it.

I feel like pulling the old reversal on him and asking him why he wants the people of Guam to die. Island Capsization Denier!

P.S. Yes, I know he has Hepatitis -C. That doesn’t cause stupidity, to my knowledge. But, as we can see, Science is hard.

In the meantime, you can learn more about and contribute to Liz Carter, the woman running against Johnson in District 4, HERE.

While Hepatitis C does not directly cause cognitive impairment, it does cause cirrhosis of the liver, which can then result in hepatic encephalopathy, manifesting as confusion, altered mental status, or even a coma, due to the build-up of toxins an otherwise healthy liver would be able to filter from the bloodstream.

If that's the case,

Why is he still in the House of Representatives making important decisions? If he doesn’t have the mental acumen to understand that an island is not going to tip over from a few thousand extra inhabitants, he has absolutely no business participating in the legislative process. If his illness is the cause, he should be removed from office immediately. If he is just too stupid to understand basic geological concepts that the average 1st grader grasps, then he should be immediately removed from office and ridiculed for the remainder of his life.

Exactly discerningconservative. I pray for him for his *illness*, but

Something *that* ridiculous needs to be called out, not ignored, even if you feel pity or empathy for someone for other reasons. Congress just put themselves in charge of our entire health care system, for goodness sake.

And a small note of History: the Roman tradition of slavery was in fact one of the more benign of the ancient world.

Roman slaves were often paid, and in many cases were expected to save their money and buy their freedom.

There was a legal way to escape slavery and become free, which many took advantage of.

It is interesting that in the interests of security today, some Americans are willing to trade away personal freedoms which ancient people would have loved to have seen!

if the disease is the problem, then he should resign and by all means get the necessary care and medical attention that he deserves, I will be praying for him and wishing him the best when he does so.

Some of you need to understand: This is not a “Student of the Month” award show at your local public school where everyone “must” win at least once to increase self esteem and ensure no one feels left out…this is the United States Congress…where some VERY important decision are being made that require some level of mental capacity.

Regardless of the reason, if Mr. Johnson does not have that capacity, he has no business being in Congress participating in those decisions. Period.

I wish we had a way to get people who are impaired out of office.

penguin2 (Diary) Thursday, April 1st at 8:54PM EDT (link)

That is one of the main problems that I see with some of these members who are ill and long past when they should be there. I am not quite sure, but hasn’t there been an issue with Sen. Robert Byrd as well, due to age changes. Yet, we cannot get these folks out without a “fitness for duty” and that is not going to happen, because who is going to determine that! Depending on which political party is in power the criteria will change. And of course, partisanship would create havoc with this as well.

Unfortunately the people are the ones being harmed by those that continue to serve past their capacity, and for that I have no answer.

Another perfect example of why the Founding Fathers thought the Congress critters would serve a couple of terms and go home.

I am sorry for Mr. Johnson’s illness; it certainly is unfortunate to see the extent of it. His party is using him right now, and it is to their shame.

That was what we jokingly said about Guam when I spent time there during the Viet Nam war. We flew B52′s out of Guam to bomb Viet Nam. Also had KC 135′s to refuel the bombers. Had quite a few and they were very “heavy”. Did not notice any tipping while I was there. I think it would be safe to deploy 25K people there assuming the B52′s have left. Please convey this to the representative and tell him there is no need to worry. I will also pray for his recovery from his illness.

When I read his quote, my first impression (even before his explanation) was that it was metaphorical. That being said, it is possible that his medical condition is contributing.

A quote from the Atlanta Journal Constitution:

“The Lithonia Democrat’s already-thin frame has shed 30 pounds in the past year. His speech is slower than ever, and he regularly gets lost in thought in the middle of a discussion. He is easily fatigued and often impatient and irritable . . . To keep the disease in remission, Johnson is going through an experimental treatment that he said has been the worst part so far. ”

It seems that things have gotten worse recently. As a doctor, I should also tell you that Hepatitis C is not usually the result of sexual contact or IV drug use. In most patients, it is unknown how it was contracted. Blood transfusion, needlesticks and other contacts with blood are considered to be risk factors.

Pelosi won’t let him go because, whether they admit it or not, they’re running scared from the upsets of the election results so far and likely the black caucus for the same reasons.

If we’re feeling restricted, you can bet all those people who sold their souls to Pelosi’s gavel are not feeling all that free either.

I think my fellow Hepatitis C sufferer has stumbled onto something

6eorge Jetson (Diary) Friday, April 2nd at 3:33AM EDT (link)

We need a giant Marine base in Washington DC!!!

I very likely contracted the Hep C virus during two full transfusions as an infant in the mid 60s–a time when blood was collected by paying donors which resulted in a low quality blood bank. There was no confirming test for the virus until ~1990, and I stumbled upon my condition when I donated blood but was rejected.

I went through a round of interferon in the mid 90s, but while I cleared during treatment, afterward, the virus returned. After a second round of interferon and ribavirin a couple of years ago, the virus cleared and, knock-on-wood, has stayed cleared and is considered unlikely to return.

I too, lost 30 pounds as food wasn’t appealing. (Put back on in no time after the treatment ended.) Easily fatigued as the ribavirin decreased my red blood cell count by ~20%. And as to the irritability, I lost any executive background processing of my thoughts. If a thought occurred to me, it flew out of my mouth, for better or (often) worse. Plus, I became severely arthritic, which has since subsided, and I had trouble sleeping.

I also lost my job, as the investment firm I worked for lost 75% of it’s revenues as the firm’s clients held it accountable for its poor investment decisions. With the importance of my IT enterprise architect role reduced to that of arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic, capitalism pushed me to find work at another firm, in better shape, and in need of my skills at my pay level.

Here’s to hoping that Hank Johnson loses his job, too.

Such words as “Narrowest” seem to be beyond him. And why is he asking the Admiral for the product of 12 and 24?
I would have to say that this is one member of the ruling elite who did Not go to a private school (and if he did, he should be demanding his money back).

I am laughing through sad tears right now.

Having witnessed the effects of the 'experimental treatment'

for hepatitis-C up close and personal (a close relative of mine went through it), I can say I would NEVER have wanted him making any kind of important decisions – affecting his own life or anyone else’s – while on that stuff. Confused, in pain (nearly constant migraines), irrational, sleepless, out of it…just incapacitated.

I agree – Rep. Johnson should have resigned already.

There was a day

tecash (Diary) Friday, April 2nd at 1:27AM EDT (link)

I would have found pity for this man. 10 years ago, even 5 years ago, maybe even 2 years ago I would have wanted him to find healing. Now, they can all drop dead as far as I am concerned and the faster the better. This guy is an idiot who has sold his soul and our country for kickbacks and “prestige.” He made a fool of himself and this country with that ignorant comment which I am sure will show up on some video depicting how “stupid” americans are.

Maybe the Hep C he has will soon send his worried about tipping islands ass straight to his final desitnation which is full of fire. The dems and no backbone repubs are our enemies, or at least they are my enemies. The sooner they burn in hell the better!

Only the weak accept abuse, the strong give it back 10 fold. I may not have much in this life, but I do have a good eye, steady aim, and ample strength to pull a trigger. Bring your abuse on. I love this country, love the people in this country, and respect the right to life. But if you desire to forfeit your right to live, threaten my rights, my dignity, or myself or my families wellbeing and I will be more than happy to help you end your life with plenty of Vitamin bullet.

Are all the Dems on the same meds???

gbenton Friday, April 2nd at 2:59AM EDT (link)

We know liberalism is a mental disorder and the meds don’t appear to be helping any. I mean, come on, just look at Howard ‘Wooohooo’ Dean.

And that Grayson guy, he’s clearly running low on his stash – he’s kinda paranoid.

In any case, I don’t see any good reason to call Battle Axe Boxer ‘Senator’ cause in November she’ll just be another unemployed crazy lady. Why encourage delusions of grandeur?

She’s better off worrying about whether adding one more unemployed Democrat in California could make the whole state tip into the ocean.

Dunno, but Al ‘I’m bravely off my meds’ Gore seems to think so. Better fuel up the jet and fly to Guam!

Let’s do this… Have the DNC build a special asylum for cranky, nutso, out of work Democrats with lots of printers to crank out ‘bills’, some SEIU members to herd them around, and some down on their luck lobbyists to remind them of the glory days of corruption and graft. Kinda a theme park for useless pin heads. Like ‘Fields of Dreamers’, I think if we build it, they will come.

Question is, can we require them to build the ‘Field of Dreamers’ on Guam???

Does the word "Dumbocrat" mean nothing to you?

I bet you could prop up Guam for a billion or two. His fellow travelers waste trillions. Welcome to Mensa, Hank.

A Diabolical April Fool's Ploy Perhaps?

Methinks not. Of course, in my gradeschool days, we would try to run from the left side of the bus to the right side in the theory we could tip it over. I wonder what would happen if the people of Guam meet on one side of the island and ran towards the other side.

So if this man is impaired does that mean that his decisions can cause no harm?

phred (Diary) Friday, April 2nd at 3:41PM EDT (link)

It is not civil nor is it cricket to make fun of someone’s unfortunate lot in life. But to dismiss the damage that a man nearly devoid of good judgment is capable of is imprudent. This man helped push ObamaCare(R) over the top and elected Nancy Pelosi Speaker.

Liberalism: Equally shared misery.
