A Time for Leaders

Over at Classical Values, Simon asks how that Glenn Beck boycott is coming along. It turns out that Glenn’s ratings have gone Apollo, and may or may not return to Earth. But while I’m going to talk about him, this diary is really about you.

Beck has been an outspoken critic of the policies of Dear Leader. That’s not surprising, since Obama’s ideas are antithetical to the kind of mainstream, populibertarian — dare I say it — American ideals for which Glenn is known. I’m not a regular Beck viewer, as it doesn’t fit my schedule, so all I have is what snippets I catch now and then and what others say about him.

If Glenn Beck were a racist, he would not be on the air. The producers of the show would quit. The sponsors would pull their ads without a boycott. The network executives would be on their own network denouncing him. There would be some evidence shown, rather than mere accusations made. Fox News could not afford to have that kind of stuff on the air, if there were some kind of stuff not to have.

And if MoveOn.org and the rest of the hopeychangey crew is calling him a racist, I’d say that is a very good sign that A) he is not a racist and B) that they see him as the enemy.

So even if I didn’t already know from watching him briefly that Beck is one of the good guys, I would support his show on the basis that he is the enemy of my enemy.

Which brings me to the point.

Glenn Beck is not the leader of our movement. Neither is Sarah Palin, or Rush Limbaugh, or Newt Gingrich. The time for annointing leaders is past.

Because if we do select some national leader, we will be limited by the amount of charisma and effectiveness of that leader. The left will attack and marginalize him, as Simon points out. And they will find flaws, since every one of us has flaws. We will be no stronger than his ability, and as weak as his foibles.

No, it’s time for you to lead. They can’t destroy us all, and there are more of us than there are of them. It’s time to take steps to retake the Republican Party, to stand up for our nation’s founding principles, to say that they still hold. Speak to your friends. Become part of the Party mechanism. Run for office. Call your Congressman. Carry a sign in a parade, even if you feel silly.

One day, the world may change so much that we are overwhelmed. All we can do is to say “Not on our watch!”

To that end I have taken a baby step, and have begun collecting signatures to become the Precinct Committeeman in our local Republican Party. I’ll have to run for election to this Party post, the lowest rung on the ladder.

What are you going to do?

We don't really have a single leader.

Brian Hibbert (Diary) Friday, August 28th at 9:54AM EST (link)

The left seems to think this is a weakness. Their world view is that there are a few people who are destined to lead and wield the power of government to control the masses. The rest should just follow the leader. The masses can’t make their own signs or decide to attend a town hall meeting without prompting. They must be organized and directed in their actions.

We, on the other hand, are a collection of free thinking individuals who have similar ideals and cooperate to generate a desirable outcome. We are independent thinkers and independent actors. If Rush or Glenn Beck happen to be stating the things we believe, we listen and cheer! They aren’t our leaders so much as people who happen to be able to express ideas well and who have a venue to make those ideas known to a wide audience.

If Rush or Beck get silenced, there are millions of others who still have the same ideas. As you say, we are the majority in this country.

As Moe once said, the cavalry isn’t going to ride in to save us from the socialism currently running wild in this country.
We are the cavalry!

And the precinct committeemen are the sergeants of the cavalry. I hope everyone else here will take the same step Socrates has taken. It’s an easy step and if enough of us take it we will be able to change the direction of this party.

And the candidate attention is awesome.

I’ve been to a couple of events — the county fair and a town hall — and the minute the pols and candidates find out you’re part of the machine, even at my preliminary stage, they curry your favor. They really suck up, because they want your support and your labor

I tell them straight out: I’m somewhere to the right of Genghis Khan, and if they want my support they need to be, too.

Socrates -- I get the same response from the pols and candidates

and I tell them essentially the same thing you do.
Thank you for becoming a fellow conservative precinct committeeman. And thank you to the rest of you who have done the same! “We are the ones we have been waiting for!”

In 2012, will YOU become a “voting member” of the Republican Party in your precinct?

This was back in November: http://www.redstate.com/achance/2008/11/22/2012-think-january-2009/

So, now I’m a precinct chairman. We now have a Governor who doesn’t actively hate Juneau and you can say out loud that you’re a Republican here, though Downtown is still bright Blue still and my suburban district is Purple on the good days. If the Greenies don’t stop it again, the new Kensington gold mine will bring in some people a little more attached to reality than the usual run of government workers and tourism employees/owners. They won’t live downtown, so it should help my district become a lttle more Red.

I read that diary, Mr. Chance

I internalized it, on some level.

By the way, for next year’s Redstate Gathering, I’m sure there will be a hat passed to help get you there.

If it wasn't for the fact that I'm not going to stay here in Harris County long

Richard Mullins (Diary) Friday, August 28th at 11:43AM EST (link)

I sign up with the Harris County GOP in a minute. The reason I’m going to be here all that long(maybe a few years[It takes that long for certification of an airline]) is my airline is not going to be here but rather in Lake Charles,LA(yes, those in Louisiana I will be your neighbor). Once I’m there, I’ll make my presence know.

Joe Biden is like a Decrepit Park owner with a Meth lab that happens to not only be a dealer but a user.

Let’s Bankrupt the Democratic paty. Make spend all the money to defend thier candidates.

Do it anyway.

I'll get there next year.

I haven’t done a lot of work this spring and summer because I had some house remodelling and additions to do and since the weather has been pretty nice, when I wasn’t doing that, I was on the boat. Consequently, money hasn’t exactly been free-flowing and SWMBO wanted to go see her mother and sisters. When I started talking about going to ATL, she started talking about how I needed to get off my butt and go to work so I could afford boat gas and galivanting around the Country. Now, her going to see her family in CA is necessary and reasonable travel but my going to see my family in GA and throw in the RS gathering was galivanting around the Country. But, I’m sure you understand that sort of logic, most married men do.

Tomorrow I am headed to a precinct organization training meeting (http://21republicans.com/calendar/event.aspx?id=450). With some luck I will return as a precinct captain.

Good luck Gadfly

I hope it works(The time that I lived in Montgomery County,MD it was deep blue[early '80's]).

As far as Montgomery County goes, although I wasn’t in The People’s Republic then, I think it has gotten worse. But it won’t get any better with me sitting on my keister, so its time to do something.

I've gotten all my signatures.

Loren Heal (Diary) Saturday, August 29th at 1:36PM EST (link)

I needed 10 signatures from registered Republican voters from my precinct, and got 12 in about an hour. Many people were reluctant to reveal their party affiliation, and they invariably turned out to be Republicans. The Democrats and indies were quick to say what they were.

Everyone was amicable, especially since I was able to point and say, for those folks I didn’t already know, that I lived “in that blue house over there.” My last name is on my license plate, and most people revealed that they had seen it in the driveway.
