Every presidential cycle we either re-elect the guy who’s in or we throw him out for his opposite.
During the course of a presidential term, a consensus develops among the electorate about the fitness of the fellow they elected. We tend to choose the next officeholder as one who would fill the perceived void, or to counteract the personality flaws of the one of whom we’ve grown weary. Or else we find a nice placeholder.
I know which it’s going to be this time, and I also know who it’s going to be.
’32 FDR wasn’t Hoover and campaigned against free bread.
’36 FDR bribed us with free bread
’40 FDR bribed us with more free bread
’44 FDR had a war going and bribed us with free bread.
’48 Truman was FDR who won the war and bribed us with free bread.
’52 Ike was the anti-FDR
’56 We liked Ike
’60 Kennedy wasn’t Ike (and Chicago cheated)
’64 Johnson was Kennedy and bribed us with free bread
’68 Nixon wasn’t Johnson.
’72, Nixon got reelected.
’76 Carter was the anti-Nixon. Ford didn’t stand a chance.
’80 Reagan was the anti-Carter.
’84 Reagan was the man
’88 Bush was Reagan.
’92 Bush wasn’t Reagan, it turned out, and Ross Perot was a bozo, so Clinton snuck in.
’96 Clinton reelection.
’00 Bush was the anti-Clinton, a straightforward Christian, not the lying twisted Clinton.
’04 Bush wasn’t John Kerry.
’08 Obama was the anti-Bush (and cheated)
’12 We will elect the anti-Obama (even though Obama will cheat)

gracie (Diary) Wednesday, November 10th at 2:43PM EDT (link)I have a fear that Palin brings just too many negatives. I have Republican and Indie relatives who would not vote for her. And although Hill is as marxist as The One, a lot of people associate her with Bill and good economic times. Some normally R friends in Missouri yearn for him.
I just want the smartest person in the room to be elected due to the challenges. Ever studied Jindal’s bio? Jindal/Bachmann or Jindal/Rubio would be excellent due to the rock star quality of the second person and the brilliance of the first. JMO.
Jeb? Really? We can do better.
acat (Diary) Wednesday, November 10th at 3:08PM EDT (link)Socrates’ list is incomplete.
Daniels is not Obama-like.
Barbour is not Obama-like.
Pawlenty is not Obama-like.
All three have more experience as governor than That Woman, or Chris Christie, or even Bobby Jindal. (I forget, did Jeb win one term or two?)
Daniels has a very functional state, and is solidly midwestern. Not very exciting, unlike Obama, but pair him with any “rock star” or “red meat thrower” types, and he could surprise…
Barbour knows more about the political side of D.C. than any of the other candidates listed, he’s got nuts-and-bolts experience with running a national campaign. He’s going to have to overcome his time as a D.C. insider … but Obama wasn’t an insider either so I don’t know how negative that really is.
Pawlenty’s cred reads a lot like Daniels’ but in a much more “blue” state… may be better to say Pawlenty is Chris Christie on decaf… Lots of experience, decent fiscal conservative cred, not Obama-ish.

Having said that I DO agree with you that he is not the best choice.
Daniels is a yawn and he raised taxes before he lowered them, Pawlenty seems weak to me. Barbour would be great except that he seems to old to make it out of office. Also I think his drawl reminds us too much of Jimmy Carter.
But hey what do I know?

acat (Diary) Wednesday, November 10th at 9:42PM EDT (link)Based on Gracie’s theory that Barbour is “too old to make it out of office” (and at 63, with current mortality rates, that strikes me as a bit silly, but to each their own…) a Barbour/Palin ticket would be a very interesting pair.

Problems abound
roguebeaver Friday, November 12th at 1:34AM EDT (link)Daniels has no personality and alienated the base with VAT and social truce if you remember. Iowa and SC are anyone’s game, but Romney has a lock on FL and NV. If the conservative vote sufficiently Balkanizes in IA and SC Romney gets the nomination. Since 1980 whoever wins 2/3 or 3/4 of the earlies wins the nomination.
Barbour is highly qualified, but he’d split the Southern vote with Gingrich and possibly Palin if she runs. Plus the wrong image as a self-described “fat redneck” from Yazoo, Mississippi. While he has little name recognition, he has the best mailing list of anyone, a top-tier organization and the money to quickly buy himself name recognition.
Pawlenty’s approval ratings are underwater in his own state: a vast majority of Minnesotans don’t want him to run for POTUS. No name recognition and no assertiveness: as Healey said of Howe, being attacked by T-Paw is like being savaged by a dead sheep. He also has social creds. Historically Republicans with no name recognition at this point in the cycle since 1960 do not break into the top tier.
Forget about Jeb, he’s out of elective politics.
So I largely agree with Grace except on Barbour’s age. 65 is the absolute limit for a 1st-term POTUS: Ike, Reagan and GHWB show that anyone over 65 as POTUS inevitably has health problems in office.
Also: it is virtually certain that Barbour and Daniels would pick Jindal for VP. Pawlenty might not: I get a sense that they’re incompatible personalities and Jindal has too much starpower/charisma for Pawlenty- can’t handle it like the others can and McCain could’ve in ’08.

roguebeaver Saturday, November 13th at 1:35AM EDT (link)They need only watch the Rally for Economic Survival back in July, or any YouTube clip of him for that matter. My ticket: Pawlenty/Jindal.

Barbour
Katie Sunday, November 14th at 11:32AM EDT (link)Because Barbour is term-limited and his state is up for off-year elections next year (as are KY and Louisiana), giving Barbour an excellent platform for helping keep is state in strong Republican leadership. It would be interesting, too, to watch what efforts he makes to help the Republicans get a republican elected in KY.
Barbour is outspoken enough about the RNC and its current leadership without being dismissive of the “establishment”. He has almost single handedly lead the RGA to historical success (money, electoral wins). His clout within the party is huge. He was virtually alone in his strenght and leadership during the Katrina crisis.
If Barbour runs, and I have no doubt he will, and he has Nick Ayers leading his campaign (a la Ken Mehlman), he will be the candidate to beat.

The_Rebel (Diary) Wednesday, November 10th at 5:52PM EDT (link)and for that I refer you to the ’92 election, where Ross Perot was, indeed, the bozo that allowed Clinton to sneak in. We could see a repeat scenario in 2012 with Mayor Bloomberg running as an Independent, claiming he is neither a Democrat or a Republican (although we know he is a far lefty) and is thus beholden to no one.
Unfortunately, there are enough bozos around to swallow his crap and allow Obama to sneak in again. I mean, if NYC can elect this guy more than once, then he could certainly siphon enough votes from independents around the country to kill our chances.
I know he said several times that he is not running for President, despite an independent party group continually trying to draft him. He just might change his mind with enough prodding. If he does, we need to be ready with our talking points for the counter-attack.
He might split the proggy vote.

Another Northeastern governor is the anti-Obama
thomasburkby Wednesday, November 10th at 5:29PM EDT (link)– namely Mitt Romney, who has specialized in turnaround situations. His numerous successes in the private sector make him the ultimate anti-Obama. Obama has proven his inability to manage anything other than a political campaign. Probably he should not even get credit for the campaign in that in that others were calling the shots much of the time, but he had good help and favorable winds. Now, as the winds have shifted, the magic is gone.

Romney Is Non-Starter
MikeG (Diary) Friday, November 12th at 8:05AM EDT (link)I’m not saying he’s not going to start, I’m just saying he doesn’t stand an icicle’s chance in Hell. Aside from the fact he looks like Politician Ken and his campaign strategy consists of “What can I do to get you into a ‘Romney for President’ bumper sticker today?”, his three major resume items are political poison:
1) Wall Street. Yeah, he wasn’t dealing in shadow banking or sub-prime lending, but the attack ads portraying Mitt as a “financial speculator” or “corporate raider” almost write themselves, and that’s death in this climate. Obama isn’t helping the economy, but lots of people still don’t have the warm and fuzzies for the banker/investor types. It may not be fair, but that’s the background from which he comes.
2) Romneycare. The man’s signature political achievement was…a mandatory, hideously expensive government-run health system. You know, the kind of thing the GOP just got picked up about 60 House seats to undo at the federal level. And Romney will be the one to deliver the coup de grace? Please.
3) Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. Come on, now! What self-respecting American actually likes the Olympics? They’re just a longer, wimpier version of the World Cup, which is itself merely a longer, wimpier version of the Super Bowl (and before all the soccer and gymnastics aficionados jump down my throat, I am just telling a joke).
Remember people, for all his hype, and all the money he poured into his candidacy, Mitt Romney remains the man who, when no one thought it possible, lost the nomination to JOHN MCCAIN! Thus ensuring that Obama landed in the White House. And we’re supposed to reward him for that?
Gee, maybe we could run Romney/Palin.
mbecker908 (Diary) Friday, November 12th at 8:24AM EDT (link)Obama would get about 60% and we’d lose the House again. As you correctly note, Obama managed his political campaign well. He also did one heck of a job getting toxic legislation thru the Congress.
We don’t really know if Romney can manage a political campaign well (or Palin for that matter) because neither had the courage to run for re-election.
We do know that Romney refused to stand for conservative principles when faced with state run health care. Mitt can be counted on for exactly nothing.

Being a MN resident, I have warmed to Pawlenty
eburke (Diary) Saturday, November 13th at 10:21AM EDT (link)in these last two years as well. I’m going to want to hear where he’s at these days re: global warming because he was awfully soft on it for a while (I’m hoping all the scandals re: the data has caused him to reconsider) and it bothers me that he was high on Johnny Mac’s VP choices.
But I’m here to tell you that Tim Paw was all that stood between MN becoming CA-lite. He vetoed a *buttload* of spending bills, singlehandedly impounded funds passed by our wacko Dem legislature (to the point that they sued him in court) and the only reason our taxes aren’t even higher than they are is because Tim made it crystal clear that any tax increases that hit his desk were DOA (and since he vetoed every single one of the ones that did hit his desk, they knew he wasn’t just bluffing)
He’s as bland as milquetoast but I’m not sure that’ll be a bad thing for an electorate that was suckered by Obama’s high sounding rhetoric. There’s others I’d rather see run but Tim Paw is a heck of a lot higher on my list than the Mittster or the Huckster.

I like Daniels in a certain way.
BA Cyclone (Diary) Friday, November 12th at 4:07PM EDT (link)Some of his appeal is that if there is truly an anti-Obama, it is HIM.
He seems to be a bull in the china shop when it comes to cutting government. The “12 for ’12″ spotlight on him that Brett Baier did last week was interesting in that regard. He has a good story to tell with regard to fiscal conservatism.
However when Baier started his line of questioning regarding a ’12 presidential candidacy, Daniels literally got a scowl on his face. Crinkled nose and rolling eyes.
I really don’t think he is considering a run. Yet.
And I’m not sure he has the interest or acumen to navigate the hypersensitive waters of a POTUS campaign. I do like some bull-in-china-shop straight shooting, but in that kind of campaign that sort of bluntness can sometimes get you into trouble.
We need someone who can shoot straight, but not right at their own two feet.

“Electing Republicans who don’t have the courage of their convictions may be easier in some circumstances, but it won’t save our country.” — Jim DeMint

Dark Horse Candidate
davidabippus Friday, November 12th at 5:31PM EDT (link)I would like to add Herman Cain’s name to the list of potential presidential candidates. He certainly has the conservative credentials and the executive/business/economics acumen to face the challenges and responsibilities of the office.
“If we do not solve the tax code, Social Security and health care the proper way, we will not give future generations a better start and keep this the greatest country in the world” – Herman Cain
“The liberties of our country, the freedom of our civil constitution, are worth defending against all hazards: And it is our duty to defend them against all attacks.” – Samuel Adams
Herman Cain would certainly cause heads on the left to explode! n/t

Change we can step in!
woof!
I second the Cain nomination
rcyclist Sunday, November 14th at 10:08PM EDT (link)I would love to see a Christie/Cain ticket.
My dream ticket
squeek71 Friday, November 12th at 5:49PM EDT (link)would be West/Jindal. They are both so darn smart, and West would have no qualms about playing hardball with Obama. If West doesn’t run (which I doubt he will yet), then Jindal is my #1. I really really love Bachman though and would be thrilled to see her on any republican presidential ticket.
Just saw the post above about Herman Cain. I like him a lot as well.
John "The Stash" Bolton
GregInFla (Diary) Friday, November 12th at 9:05PM EDT (link)may put his hat in the ring, which he stated in an interview with Fred Thompson last week. Maybe we need to look outside governors’ mansions and Congress.
– A true evolutionist would let endangered species die off. Think about it.
– The sign outside the courthouse said no signs allowed. So I took it down.
– Atlas Shrugged is now on the non-fiction aisle at Amazon.
The Stash rocks but he has no chance to win
JSobieski (Diary) Saturday, November 13th at 12:13AM EDT (link)He points out quite bluntly that he would run just to raise certain foreign policy issues in the debates.
We should look to Governor’s mansions. Forget Congress. We need someone with executive experience.

I REALLY like Bolton!!
fpete13527 (Diary) Sunday, November 14th at 11:48AM EDT (link)I agree it might be hard for him to win at President (although he is on my short list).
What about a tag team as VP though like
Cain / Bolton
or
DeMint / Bolton
Romney *can* win the nomination.
Martin Knight (Diary) Saturday, November 13th at 6:29AM EDT (link)But he’ll need a truly inspired out-of-left field VP pick (*not* Palin) to win the base over and make him a contender against Obama.
Back in 2007-8, I recommended Gen. Peter Pace (USMC). Now … well, I don’t know.
Jim DeMint
chamberD Saturday, November 13th at 2:24PM EDT (link)I’m not smart enough to click links before I tell people to do research.
As of June 22, 2011 there have been a total 68 VAERS reports of death among those who have received Gardasil® . There were 54 reports among females, 3 were among males, and 11 were reports of unknown gender. Thirty two of the total death reports have been confirmed and 36 remain unconfirmed due to no identifiable patient information in the report such as a name and contact information to confirm the report. A death report is confirmed (verified) after a medical doctor reviews the report and any associated records. In the 32 reports confirmed, there was no unusual pattern or clustering to the deaths that would suggest that they were caused by the vaccine and some reports indicated a cause of death unrelated to vaccination.
All of the people you guys are mentioning
Green_Lantern (Diary) Saturday, November 13th at 5:34PM EDT (link)are good people. But when you are talking about a spending crisis, you need somebody who is proven, and who is known to stand up to spenders. And win.
You also need someone who is not going to be “positioning” himself about re-election. Not the first year. Not the second year. Not the third year.
To be honest, I don’t know where he stands on abortion. And that is a huge, huge issue with me. I’m an unqualified anti-abortionist. It’s not that we have “bigger” fish to fry right now. It’s that we have to fry *these* fish before we can fry *those* fish, or it’s a moot point.
Chris Christie.
If Republicans run any 2008 contenders
Wine Country Dog (Diary) Sunday, November 14th at 2:25PM EDT (link)for president or vice-president in 2012 they will hand the White House and Congress to 0bama. It doesn’t make any difference if they are good candidates or not, it is going to be the public’s perception of retreads. It also gives the 0bama regime the easy “see, they really don’t have any new ideas” drum to beat.
All the hard work done in 2010 will be lost. If you want to see 0bama up there shouting “I WON” with that stupid grin on his face, if you want to see 0bama again shouting “Elections Have Consequences” in your face, if you want to see 0bama and the fringe left Democrats in complete control of your life for four more years, run a 2008 retread for president or vice-president.

I have a slightly different take on the chronology
JSobieski (Diary) Sunday, November 14th at 3:00PM EDT (link)Presidents are elected to address to major weakness in the previously elected predecessor. Keeping in mind that swing voters are the key:
Carter won because he was honest . . . unlike Nixon (Ford was the incumbent, but Nixon was the last guy elected)
Reagan won because he was strong . . . unlike Carter
Bush won because he was kinder and gentler . . . unlike Reagan
Clinton won because he could feel your pain . .. unlike Bush
Bush won because he was a man of integrity/honor . . . unlike Clinton
Obama won because he was spoke well . . . unlike Bush
Obama’s greatest weakness is competence. I think his successor will be someone who is not flashy and unquestionably competent.

and let me be clear, I don't necessarily agree with these characterizations
JSobieski (Diary) Sunday, November 14th at 3:06PM EDT (link)but I do think they represented what swing voters were thinking.
