MEMBER DIARY

Socrates no more.

Five years ago this month I began posting on Redstate.  I think it was already redstate.com then, although I may have come in on the tail of redstate.org.  Erick was just another user; talented, but no more than many others present.  He was still practicing law then, you see.

Everyone had these wicked cool usernames, like ‘Tacitus’, ‘Plato’ and ‘Nick Danger’. Since I loved the classics growing up, as on a whim I chose the name ‘Socrates’.  One by one they all switched or moved on.

But one can’t post as Socrates and be silly, or argue badly.  It wouldn’t do.  There was something about seeing that name there that made me want to write a certain way.

And it has to end.

The site drama over the last few days hit me hard.

To be honest, I didn’t particularly like Vassar’s writing style. But it was worth wading through it for the conservativvy goodness of his content.

It stunned me that he was summarily banned without explanation.  Was I next?  As it happened my browser or the site had a glitch that morning and said my username didn’t exist.  I persevered and found that I could log in, but the thought had been planted.

The more I thought about things, the more difficult it was for me to continue on as if nothing had happened.  I was determined not to withdraw, but I didn’t feel like writing anything.

So this step occurred to me, and it seems that yes, it’s time to put away this attachment to the old days.

Just a note. Also, I like the tag.

I’m pretty sure I knew that at the time, but I wasn’t keeping a diary, so to speak.

And I use the term “drama” as a kind of ironic self-flagellant. I mean, one of the charges leveled (at least by me, maybe only privately) at the former members was too much drama. And here I am, posting about it.

The fact is it stung. And I’m not sure people get that yet. It’s going to change the site. Perhaps those changes will be for the better, but I think a lot of baby has gone out with the bathwater.

      And so, the post.

And I know I was here when it was redstate.org.

It’s nice to see some new names around, plus some of the the old ones who were on extended hiatus for whatever reason.

I’m glad you’re still here, Loren. You’re a great writer and have a lot to contribute.

I pushed “Trelaina” to a parenthetical reference months ago, but never dropped it. Might have to do that now…

Loren, for what it’s worth, Redstate and what it stands for has been a breath of fresh air for me. I am coming in at a time when perhaps the old order is in decline but, I have regained a great deal of psychological and spiritual strength from reading the posts and offering my two cents on it since I joined. Your and other’s participation cannot be undervalued in this community and is certainly not under appreciated by me.

These are historic times and we need great thinkers such as yourself to illuminate the path to personal freedom. Without which there is no hope for the future. Let the stars collapse into one another if personal freedom be lost forever from the face of this small and insignificant planet.

Here the fight for good and right continues, we are its only hope! ;-)

And for those who will be temped to misread or interpret my comments. Move on!

    My two cents…

I haven’t seen any of that under your former moniker. I can buy the silliness, though, considering some of the funny stuff you send out on twitter.

I’ve only been on RS for a few months and started using my real name after the first couple of days. For me, it was a matter of holding myself accountable. I’m much less likely to be over-the-top rude if I’m using my real name. I’ve made a couple of regrettable comments (e.g. I got a bit snarky over the comparison of VB to George Washington, because I like Vassar and really appreciate some advice that he e-mailed me, but no one these days is a Washington, and after all, we’re just blogger activists). Usually, though, I think twice before clicking the post comment button. Proofreading myself would probably be a good idea too, as I make typos like crazy sometimes, but that’s another subject entirely.

I’m not sure how much some of the things I say really fit the handle thejoyofreason, which is similar to your comment about Socrates. I hope that you stick around, Loren.

makes claims on style alone, not on substance!

It’s time for me to say “Hi, I’m Danielle and I’m conservative”.

Besides, the only reason I was ocleverone was because OCluelessOne was taken. (Seriously)

I have 24 in my top ten list!

Seriously, though, very alluring and mysterious name Danielle..I think of European movies somehow. French?

      • Danielle Davis (ocleverone)

        Not French. Danish and Hungarian.

It’s someone who still hasn’t figured out WTF “Kowalski” means.
          Someone, that is, like me!

          Help?

          • http://westforwestwing2012.com heartlander

It’s someone who still hasn’t figured out how to do one of those neat “signature” quotations.

            Again: Help?!

          • Danielle Davis (ocleverone)

OK, now somebody tell that to Barack Obama and Sarah Palin!

certainly what you said is de rigeur on the net, nothing against you. :)

did I ever read your (former) name correctly–I always guessed it was a reference to either a Renaissance composer or … a cheese. So for me at least you’re going through two name changes concurrently!

      • Danielle Davis (ocleverone)

Most people think it is Oh Cleaver Ronee. :)

In 2005 I was motivated to start a small blog about media bias and politics related to a professional sport. I used my real name, first and last. It soon came to my attention that big deal people were very angry at things I posted. Which were just things big wigs said that they didn’t like to be reminded of. I had one commenter over a period of time who told me if his boss knew he commented on my blog he would be fired. The reason for not using one’s real name is physical safety. It’s fine now as I live in an apartment in a doorman building. But for a couple of years I lived in a modest, city-suburban area in a different state in a single family house. No one in the neighborhood knew me except to say hello, I had no run-ins with anyone there. However, someone was motivated enough to pay people to stalk me at my house for a year and a half. There were a few cars that parked near my house and slowly cruised by regularly. My property was repeatedly vandalized during this time. I can’t say for sure it was related, but the instances were all of a similar kind. I was finally able to sell the house. No one in the neighborhood could have afforded to pay for professional harassers. Some of them didn’t even speak English. The only way I could have been known there was my name was on public tax records and it matched what I used on the blog. I can’t imagine what people go through that have children, because people these days just want to shut you up any way they can.
