I worry a bit about RedState

The diaries section seems to have evolved into a solid forum much like the original RedState started out. But I don’t know if anyone else noticed but the front page has lost it’s edge. There are still occasional good articles by the front page authors but everything from the morning briefing to the headlines tends to get stale. Some days there is nothing new  in the morning briefing, assuming there is a briefing for the current day at all.

After Drudge, my first stop was always Red State. I could count on finding sharp pertinent articles on the latest topics. Drudge might break a story, but it wouldn’t be long before one or more of the front page writers would have analysis posted.  This check Drudge, check Red State, research loop was successful during months of non-events leaving me with an important question: Why now that we are in the midst of the most critical and exiting election since 1980 why do I never find a reason to stay on Red State any more? Instead of finding a plethora of great insight, I find what looks to me like an empty page with a few stale articles scattered around.

Of course, I am still in the habit of looking at the front page and then moving on to my second or third choices. In the past I  could go weeks never needing to look at TownHall or other sites for commentary or analysis. When I find that the writers at TH are more current I worry. Maybe I need to change my viewing habit. I used to enjoy chasing interesting diaries by following the comment streams. I have learned there is  no value in that. And like a lot of other people here I don’t write for a living, so there are times when I can’t respond the way I would like to my comments. Now I haven’t figured out how to re-engage a reader who commented on my post if it is more than a few hours old.  Something I could always do before. While I can’t always monitor and comment while at work I always tried to be responsible and follow up when I could. Very disappointing.

And recently we had a spill on “Aisle 3″ as was the phrase I remember from the old days. The diaries were being spammed.

So, I am asking this question. What happened and when will the front page be restored to it’s former greatness.

Heh… My Bookmark/speed-dial page has 62 blogs (and that tree has branches)… Don’t feel bad WmCraig, I share your frustration and disappointment with not just RS but the whole new media in general. Executive branch 90% of the time, never pro-active always re-active. Narrative defined… THEN we attack. Its depressing. And then everyone falls on the “disqus” sword… (Frankly I dont blame them). There is one thing I know sure… After November 6… The 13th Commandment goes out the window… There will be no more excuses for failure forwarded for the republican party tolerated from this new media junkie… Bring on the blam stick I say! ;-) /salute

P.S. Anyone heard from “acat”? That guy was a staple around here… I have been AFK for months… Just wondering.

    • kipling

acat has left the building. He departed shortly after the new format came online. You might still be able to access his last (and first) diary for the reason why.

      • retrocon87

I was always pretty fond of that guy… definitely a bit peculiar at times but always still “oddly lovable” for some reason… shame he’s gone.

    • tngal

I noticed Acat posts occassionally on Moe’s site if that helps any. I think Acat’s thing here was the security issue with disqus. He/she always stressed “safe” posting.

      • SoFiMil

Thanks, tngal. I’ll have to head over to Moe’s place and see what that ‘ol cat is up to.

  • bassethound

I wish I knew how to start a diary. I wrote a piece I wanted to post and found that my request was still “pending”.

    • Bill S

      It’s approved now.

      • http://www.twitter.com/RWBuckeye Right-Wing Buckeye

Could I get my request approved? I don’t have anything ready, but I would like to try to write something eventually.

        • Bill S

What’s your user name (the ID you log in with)

It used to be a lot easier for me to check out a request, but the new back-end of RS makes it much harder to verify a user’s “validity”.

          • http://www.twitter.com/RWBuckeye Right-Wing Buckeye

            It’s rightwingbuckeye

I wish I had a diary, too. I’ve commented a lot here and I’d like to post some original content once in awhile. I think my username is “superbowldave”.

          • Bill S

I found it…it should be approved now.

          • Bill S

I approved it. See if you can post now.

          • http://www.twitter.com/RWBuckeye Right-Wing Buckeye

Also, thank you for looking into it.

          • WmCraig

Thank you for taking care of the spam

          • http://about.me/l.v.johnston lvjohnston

Ditto! And I would think that the old “aisle 3′ phrase would still provide an easy way for the mods to search and locate sources of trouble in the comments. Unless they can share a simpler way, I’ll continue to use it as it’s still my favorite and the one that always gave me a chuckle years ago!

  • kipling

If it wasn’t for streiff and a few others, the Front Page would be a ghost town. I would like to see the Recommended Diary list come back.

  • mrsemptybucket

I am going to agree that there used to be more political analysis of FP writers but there are still are some great postings there. I miss the recommend and “promote up the line” aspect of the diaries. Used to be my FIRST stop and although I am struggling with Disqus not loading am still learning a lot here at RedState and come here before even Drudge. Okay, I’m going to post and then i’ll have to leave because Disqus only lets me post one time a visit and then quits loading back in. Sigh!

  • http://travismonitor.blogspot.com Freedoms Truth

Sadly, you are right. I’ve had some great diaries in the last 6 weeks that went into a hole of obscurity, and other great diaries similarly. The recc’d diary list is broken.
We need the old community spirit back.

    • http://travismonitor.blogspot.com Freedoms Truth

OTOH, I dont have a problem with DISQUS per se.

    • Ausonius

Depending on how many people are publishing diaries, a diary can disappear fairly quickly: needing to scroll down – if the box works! – may als oprevent people from finding diaries. My present diary has been on the list for two days now, which is something of a record for me here on the revised RedState. Two people have responded, and that is fine, although a counter as to the number of readers passing by would be nice. And what is the deal with older diaries? “Read more” clicking sends one in a circle: and if one clicks the title, then I at least often get 2/3 of a page and/or no comments.

      • Bill S

If you find any truncated diaries, send an email to contact@redstate.com. That was a migration problem, and the tech guys supposedly fixed it.

        • Ausonius

e.g. Right now in this comment box I see “Post as Auso ” and depending on the length of the comment, the last several words ar cut off. Roughly about 5 to 7 spaces.

          • Bill S

That one’s on Disqus’s back…the comments block is completely hosted by them. The truncation problem I’m talking about is the one where an old diary is part missing. There was a lot of that right after we migrated, and I believe the problem was (at least we THOUGHT it was) fixed.

          • westcoastpatriette

I just checked about five of my old diaries and only one is still truncated but all of them are either missing all comments or the comments are not related to the diary. I’m not concerned about it anymore. Just thought I’d let you know.

          • Bill S

From what I can tell, the attempts to import old comments were total fails.

      • WmCraig

In some ways I like the new diaries page. But remember, before when you posted a diary the title at least hit a menu on the front page. The issue of my concern is that there is little reason to hang out on the front page. In the past I could find relevant, timely analysis of anything on Drudge right here. Spending time reading through several posts gave you a chance to view the changing comments and posts menu. And of course there was the recommended diaries list.

But the first thing was that you needed to have satisfied the interest that brought you here in the first place. I am a political junkie, so I check out Drudge about every two hours. At one time I could go to red state, find a couple relevant articles by front page authors, then check out diaries and get opinions from others members. But the first thing was getting enough information to understand, and that has disappeared. So, I end up leaving and spending time hanging out elsewhere. We need that front page to keep everyone here long enough to take time to dig into the back pages as well.

  • westcoastpatriette

This new design makes me feel like we were really spoiled at the old site. It was designed to make it easy to access each other’s posting and diary histories. Now, when I click on “my diary” above, it takes me to wordpress as if I am going to edit something and there is no access to the comments at all. Frustrating.

    • WmCraig

WPAT, there is a link under on the dash board of the Word press page that says All posts. It will bring you to all your work. Although from what I can tell it doesn’t give you access to your comments. Which for the most part makes it useless. Unless like me you have a lot of draft posts you want to complete or grab parts from for new posts. It is so much harder now to exchange the kinds of friendly disagreements that you and I engaged in.

That said, some things have been addressed and I suspect at this rate by the end of the year we will be getting spoiled again, using the new features. What worries me is unless they bring relevance, freshness and reliability back to the front page many of us won’t be spending much time here. It is getting hard to find a reason to stay. Other than the occasional visit to the diaries pages. That is the big problem.
How will we reach people we can explore ideas with, intellegently, if there is little reason to spend time on this site. When I have to go elsewhere for what I always could find here, I end up hanging out there. It was during those times hanging out that I a comment or a post would catch my eye. Something that won’t happen if the eyes don’t stay.

The best site on the web suddenly took up golf or something,

  • tngal

Well, I’m not sure it has to do with “former” anything but in terms of “older”… there’s a new diary titled republican’s double standards on libya, that for some reason has a June date on it. And its a lefty troll…so, we have weirdness afoot. How they got it to come up showing June 21st is a bit of a puzzle.

    • tngal

Kowalski! Thankfully the mods are stepping in on the libya diary and delivering the appropriate 30 public lashes. Nothing like a good flogging to raise the spirits. Silly trolls. You’d think even they would figure out when the light of day hits them they would crumble,

  • SoFiMil

In a few weeks (i.e., after the election), I’ll chime in on this. Not looking for distractions right now.

  • avgjo

    That’s crazy…

after reading this diary, and the comments, I was shocked to see acat had left. I read his one and only diary entry, and I saw in the comments there, more shocking news. Aesthete and kyle8 left. All those guys were fixtures here (something that even I, a relative neophyte, realize).

It’s definitely different. I’ve only come a handful of times since the changes (one major reason I was so shocked to learn of the departures of the guys named above).

Kipling, Viet71, mbecker, Tbone, Mr. Stevens, streiff, BillS and many others I highly esteem here, I wish you all well. I bid you a fond ‘happy trails, until we meet again’.

I hope everyone has a great holiday season, hopefully eagerly counting down to change in the White House in January 2013.

    I’ve learned a lot here, and I hope I wasn’t too irritating.

    Thanks to all.

  • westcoastpatriette

To the mods: had a strange experience with wordpress last night. I published a diary about a half hour before the debate and after about five minutes, it disappeared into cyberspace. There is no record in my diary history in wordpress that it ever existed. Just thought I would let you know.

    • streiff

you just aren’t holding it right

      • westcoastpatriette

        hahah. nt
