DNC Chair and Obama lose two council seats in their backyard

[UPDATE, Moe Lane] Permit me to introduce the two new GOP council members for Alexandria:

frankfannon1 hughesa
Frank Fannon Alicia Hughes

—–

Jim Geraghty over at National Review has the basic facts. Democrats lost two seats on the Alexandria, Virginia city council:

Boy, how long has it been since I’ve been able to report good news on an election night for Republicans? With results from 26 out of 26 precincts, and absentees included, Republican Frank Fannon and GOP-endorsed independent Alicia Hughes appear to have won seats on the Alexandria City Council. The Democrats will still control a majority of four out of six seats, but this is a couple rippes of red in a deep blue community in a purple state - the best news for local Republicans in a long time.

But the implications are bigger. Barack Obama won this county 72-27. Senator Mark Warner is from Alexandria. Democratic National Committee Chair Tim Kaine is the Governor of Virginia.

Barack Obama lost today. The Democratic National Committee lost today.

My pessimistic side would say this is a drop in the bucket against TheOne’s 70M strong Hope army.

My optimistic side says that when the conservative movement has been at its strongest, it’s dominated these local elections. I don’t know who council members-elect Fannon and Hughes are, but Godspeed!

Die-hard Obama voters now see him as owned by banks

katesmith Wednesday, May 6th at 12:10AM EDT (link)

I was listening to a local PBS radio affiliate in Tampa the other day taking calls on Obama. All the Obama voters that called in said they still liked him but that he was owned by bankers. Even a few weeks ago, the same people wouldn’t have allowed one word against the guy.

Welcome to the war, Frank and Alicia

Things are about to become pretty interesting, but I congratulate you. RedState is your friend, and we are like the friend who weighs 260, has a 3rd degree black belt, and speaks very softly but firmly.

IOW, a GOOD friend to have. Knock em dead, guys.

Even bigger news comes

Thomaruss@aol.com Wednesday, May 6th at 4:36AM EDT (link)

from suburban Chicago. A public high school near Obama’s house has elected a conservative 17-year old as its new student body president. Yeah, the GOP’s back, baby!

Seriously, the Democratic NATIONAL Committee cares about what happens in a local contest in Alexandria, VA (#173 in US population)?

Alexandria turnout Nov 2008: 75%
Alexandria turnout yesterday: 15%

And you guys are excited about this. Desperate anyone?

palomino70, does your mother know you're still up? nt

No, Achance, my mom's busy...

…with your wife. They’re moving to Vermont and getting hitched. (I’m sure proud of my lesbian widow mom…how do you feel about your wife?)

Now that we’ve traded childish insults, do you have a response on substantive matters?

Dude...

You don’t know how lucky you are to be on a website and not face to face. I assure you that saying something about someone’s wife would earn you a short trip to the hospital.

Anyway, Someone needs to bring out the blam stick on Palomino. That comment is beneath the good posters here at RS.

Thomaruss@aol.com Wednesday, May 6th at 7:40AM EDT (link)

If we were face to face and he brings up my mother you better believe I’d say something about his wife.

As for the “good posters here at RS”, they’re busy referring to Colin Powell as a “scumbag arse” and calling a Supreme Court Justice a child molester, so spare me the high horse about etiquette.

The original post is still there, so tell me how a LOCAL election in the 173rd largest “city” in the US worries the Dem NATIONAL Committee or President Obama. I submit it doesn’t, and that the “good posters” here are blindly grasping for any bit of good news.

Anyway, he’s a ghost now and we can have a full and informative exchange of ideas regarding his mother’s ancestry and sexual proclivities.

Being a Virginian, this is great news

and the state will be turning Red here very shortly with the election of McDonnell, Bolling and Cucunnelli. The tide has turned, and imagine, it only took a little over 100 days.

Scope,

Wing Zero Wednesday, May 6th at 6:43AM EDT (link)

According to the polling data posted at Wikipedia, McDonnell has a lead on any of hid Democrat opponents.

Still, I’d be happier if he (McDonnell) broke 50, but we’re still a long way out.

Yes, I heard about the polls, with McDonnell leading any of the three Dems by double digits. As you say, it’s a long way out, but, I really believe he can only improve as Obama, the Libeals and King Kaine go further down in their popularity, as seen in the purpose of this diary.

Keeping my fingers crossed

Virginia as harbinger

naraht Wednesday, May 6th at 12:02PM EDT (link)

When the Republicans win the Virginia Governorship in 2009, the Democrats will point out (just as the Republicans did in 2005) that the party of the President has always lost the race for Virginia Governorship since 1977. (Last VA Gov to be elected with his party in the White House was Miles E. Godwin in 1973 and he was also Governor as a Democrat in from 1966-1970)

New Jersey, OTOH, will be *considerably* harder to spin if the Democrats lose.

Meanwhile, up in Alaska...

SecularRepublican Wednesday, May 6th at 11:25AM EDT (link)

I’m all for cheering on Republican victories on all levels - local, state, and federal - but to spin this as a loss for Obama and the DNC is positively silly. Maybe it would have been if Obama campaigned for the local Dem or if the DNC poured money into this local race, but that didn’t happen. Do we really think the President or the DNC really care about two seats on a local city council?

yes, this is good news indeed, and while he won’t show it on TV, it has James Carville and the rest of his crew shaking in their boots. Two Republican seats in the region of Virginia which is responsible for allowing commentators to call it a ‘Purple trending Blue State’ instead of a Red state is a truly stunning upset, regardless of the turnout for the vote.

We’ve been called racists enough now that it shouldn’t bother us any more.
