I am one of millions who have not spent “their whole lives 100% marinated in politics”
I’ve been paying attention since 9/11…and the one thing I can’t stand in politics is the lying.
I am a great judge of character, just look at the friends I’ve made here at RS
..I have 20 different hobbies, 2 wifes and three kids…I’m a busy guy..I don’t have the time to delve to deeply into a politicians history, but I can tell if I trust someone or not.
I keep it simple and I can tell when someone’s lying to me.
I am malleable. I am easily excitable. If I trust you, I will follow you, I will fight for you.
Nice to meet you, I am the voter that the GOP needs Really bad.
Sanford has been lying to us from DAY 1…uggg
Huckabee will invite you over for Bible study with cookies and milk…then lie to you.
Romney is Very serious and authoritative when he’s lying to you.
McCain is like Santa Claus at the Mall…you sit on his lap and he tells you you’ll get everything you want for Christmas…but you know he’s lying.
And who is this Pawlenty dude, I’ve never seen his face, or heard him speak…I know more about Tom Delay than Tim Pawlenty.
Lastly….Jindal…I’ve seen him a couple times….uggg….he does nothing for me.
The McCain nomination was a kick to my morale nuggets, and then came Sarah….she made the pain in my stomach disappear. She is HANDS-DOWN my favorite politician. She’s the real deal, at least till she’s Not…lol, does that make sense?…I’ve been stoked on Sarah since ‘the Speech’.
It’s just too bad how the campaign went…but we had no control over that.
I listened to her resignation speech on the radio and it sounded like Sarah’s heart was stuck in her throat…she has been injured, but she’s no quitter.
You might say to yourself, ‘hey special, your just a rookie, your opinion doesn’t carry alot of weight’…here’s what i say…
There is a large block of voters just like me. It’s fine that the people think we need to get the black voters, the gay voters, the Martian voters…..but don’t forget about Regular Joe’s like me. The GOP will dominate if we can grab the ‘Regular Joe’ voters.
Nobody brings the ‘Regular Joe’ voters like Sarah…and don’t forget about ‘Regular Jane’.
I trust Sarah…I am willing to give her as much time as she wants. If the GOP continues to throw her under the bus…they will be losing voters like me in droves. Voters like me will make the difference, count on it.
(I see that the poll shows that ‘upcoming scandle’ is in the lead…if that happens, my head will truly explode and I might head to Mexico earlier than expected.)
Update: Now that I’ve slammed Republicans for being liars…my next blog will be about the most incomparable, inimitable, matchless, super, superlative, supreme liars of all time…the Democrats

Given that, standing next to John McCain she looks like the Second Coming, but when all is said and done, she’s just a politician.
We’ll see what happens. She’s a talented lady. We still have to find out what she really believes. Among other things.
Unlike Governor Sanford, she still has the ability to be “in the running” if she wants to be. Whether she’ll be successful or not, who knows.

Just a politician
Maggie_in_Indiana (Diary) Sunday, July 5th at 2:39PM EST (link)would not have resigned, Just a politician would have used her bully pulpit of the governors office to get to the white house like one Barack Obama did. People know the truth when they hear..just ask Specialist.
Maybe we would be better off to look outside what we think a politician should be and look for what we need as representatives to serve us.
Great post by the way.

No conflicts with your post, but it's time to change this.
Vaughn Harold (Diary) Monday, July 6th at 10:46AM EST (link)I understand the reality of what a politician is today in our country, and I say no more. “We the people” have tolerated the garbage in the system for too long. We have entrusted these idiots with too much power, and that power is now in the wrong hands. It’s time to take it back, it’s time “We the people” demand for the terms trust and politician is one and the same! We need statesman!
If you commit adultery, steel, cheat, lie, etc, you’re disqualified!
If you can not operate on a budget, you’re disqualified!
If you can not secure our boarders & our nation, you’re disqualified!
If you can not operate within the defined limits of power as define in the written constitution, you’re disqualified!
Etc, Etc, Etc!
No more will I vote for anyone that can not live their life the way I live mine, no more!
It’s up to the Republican Party or IMHO the conservative movement to find people of this type of character and then promote/protect them. It doesn’t require a freaking doctorate degree to stop the insanity that is going on in Washington. What it takes is for the ordinary “We the people” to say you’re fired, your job performance has been found to be a dismal failure as defined by your job description in the Constitution of the United States!
You get what you pay for! I’m not buying idiots that can’t run their own personal lives any more, and entrusting them to run our government. And if there is no political party that is willing to accomplish this, well there are other means to bring about change in tyrannical governments.
The difficulty is
Uma Richie (Diary) Monday, July 6th at 11:01AM EST (link)that Conservatives dislike the government establishment; therefore, they eschew becoming a part of it.
Modern Liberals like government, so those with the most impressive resumes naturally gravitate to elected office and stay there.
Our best and brightest are running businesses, killing terrorists, homeschooling children, etc. Success in politics seems to require people to sell their souls. Are any real conservatives willing to do that?
There is only one individual that requires one's soul as payment for success, and
Vaughn Harold (Diary) Monday, July 6th at 11:57AM EST (link)if success in our government requires such payment to be made then there is only one solution: that government must be forcably removed.

Us regular people never get much credit because we’re not experts or as you said, “marinating in politics.” We’re not experts so we must trust the political experts to know what’s best for us.
Like you, I didn’t pay much attention to politics before 9/11.
Sarah said something in her speech that got translated into something else. She talked of supporting candidates who espouse conservative principals and have the actions of conservatives to back them up. That got translated into support for Republicans but that’s not what she said.
This morning I was listening to something on the news, I think it was the organizer of the Dallas Tea Party being interviewed, who talked about conservative principles as the driving force behind the tea party movement, which again was translated into being Republican driven. The lady corrected the interviewers but I doubt they heard it.
Us regular Joes and Janes naturally trend toward conservatism when left to our own devices. Neither party is listening.
I would say some percentage of those groups mentioned are also regular Joes and Janes, too. I would speculate a good many of them are when, once again, left to their own devices.

we have some glaring differences Specialist
Doc Holliday (Diary) Sunday, July 5th at 7:13PM EST (link)and some important similarities. I have always been political. Well, not political per se but a patriot, that necessarily morphed into political at a young age.
I agree with a lot you say in general and some you say here. I don’t get the “feeling up my leg” with Sarah, but I am glad she is out there and on our side. I do think Jindal has a great future, he does it for me but he needs to grow more.
One thing about the Doc is that he rarely strays from clear cut ideals and ideas. For example, I have said in an almost continuous loop that we have to fix the party before we pick a leader. We need to get back to Goldwater/Reagan ideas of small government, maximum liberty, and a powerful military before we anoint someone as some charismatic pied piper. With conservatives, it will always be the ideas, the ideals of our Founders.
As a historian, I will say with 99 percent accuracy that no one here knows whether Sarah is the one or if her quitting was a good play or not. If anyone says they know, they are wrong. Nothing wrong with guessing and hoping, hoping is important to people. But no one knows at this point if she made a master stroke or a horrible blunder.
Again, and I have said this a hundred times here, we have to get back to the ideas of our Founders, Barry Goldwater, and Ronald Reagan. That is the thing about me, I will give quarter to other ideas, I am a cool guy, I will even zig when expected to zag, but I will always go back to the basics in the end. Minimum government, maximum liberty. Is Sarah the one? I hope she is, or someone is, but our party needs to change before we make this decision. If a leader can change a party, then fine, kill two birds with one stone. But be ready to be crushed if your whole thing is this one person, that is not what conservative politics is about, it will always be the ideas and who can best follow them and lead others.
Molon Labe!
This is the confusing part...
speciallist (Diary) Sunday, July 5th at 7:52PM EST (link)“I have said in an almost continuous loop that we have to fix the party before we pick a leader.”
OK how do you ‘fix the party’ Before you pick some leaders?
Lots of People like me espouse the ideals you describe….’small government, maximum liberty, and a powerful military’…the numbers are vast……we need leaders we can trust, to pull those numbers together…
this is a vicious circle and Can’t continue…
specialist, the problem is our party
Doc Holliday (Diary) Sunday, July 5th at 8:37PM EST (link)has certain factions that have inordinate power. I always get in trouble when I talk about “social conservatives’”. But what I mean when I say that is not those who believe in a Leave It To Beaver America, what I mean are a few self aggrandizing self appointed “pastors” and the flocks that follow their every word about politics
I think some so call Socons really don’t care about maximum liberty/minimal government. They want the power Obama has, to create laws and a government that tells us what to do, they just want their own ideas to be the law. There are many big government “conservatives” not just the socons, but also some neo cons who only want to fight the War on Terror but think we need to go along with socialism because, well, they are not wiling to win the ideas war, they just want to give up on those things that are not their focus.
We also have many entrenched politicians who only want to save their own hides, ideas are not their big thing, examples are McCain, Murray, and the former Senator Frist. Frist was the worst of these, he was willing to trample freedom to score political points, and he failed.
I think we need new leadership and new movement conservatives like the freshman class of ’94. I think we need to stop apologizing like Linsdsey Graham and start advocating a few strong ideas. To many in Washington are only reacting to the Dems, they want to argue point by point but they do not want to fight for a small group of ideas.
If we found a charismatic leader, a true believer, and we fought only for the Constitution and the ideas of the Founders, the USA as a free land and belief in the free market and opportunity for all we would have a winning hand. The Demonrat party is about every person being the same, our party is about letting people and industries pursue their own potential with no limits.
I have few problems with Sarah, but I don’t think she is ready for prime time. It is nto the person, it is the entire movement, we need to start fighting back and stop quitting or giving quarter to anyone who attacks us. As the nutroots took over their party, we true believers need to take over our party. I believe independents will follow us is we stop apologizing, navel gazing and start acting like rightful heirs to Washington, Jefferson, and Franklin.
I don’t think this will be easy, I am not sure it will every happen, but it is what we need. We don’t get a big tent by having 400 policy positions and speak in 3 languages, we get a big tent by espousing a few big ideas.

Doc Holliday (Diary) Monday, July 6th at 12:19AM EST (link)I have been in many heated arguments here over three years. Doc Holliday (Diary) Monday, July 6th at 1:55AM EST (link)if you guys had been paying attention, he flamed me over and over before with no substance. You are the one who read something into a post I made that I did not say, this has nothing to do with tbone being a troll and all around asswhipe.
That you tell me to go to Daily Kos tells me pretty much what a need to know after 3 and a 1/2 years here. I am not going to back down, it is Tbone or me. I know it is a crappy thing to say, I have never said anything like it, and wont ever do it again, but on this I am firm.
This poster is not worthy of the site, on that alone someone should blam him. If I have any influence at all, if I have built up any goodwill, then someone would at least consider the request. I am not going to make my case, if I have to, then I have wasted 3 1/2 years.
I have made many online friends here, to many to mention. The Dontread, Jlenard, Jaded types are in my wheel house and don’t need mentioning. The regulars like Civil, Mbeck, GC, Caleb (who i discovered lol) are just a few. In fact I consider this place a home away from home and meet everyone here with good intentions and serious, fair discussion.
Don’t get me wrong, I have gone off half cocked before. But this Tbone has harassed me as a mission, and for no other reason. I don’t back down from a fight, but I thought this site was moderated and people earned respect. When you tell me to “go to Daily Kos” you say you have no respect. Well if Moe, or Leon, or Caleb for example were here, I bet that would not have been said.
I really do appreciate my compadres here, but what is right is right. It seems people want me out or want me to beg, that will never happen. If you think tbone is better for the site than I am, then fine, I won’t complain.

but seriously, we are the party of religion, of national pride, of the Constitution. We should not get too into a single fallible person, because we will always be let down. I guess my point is to give yourself and the party a break. We are only people, and people are fallible. But the ideas of liberty and freedom will always be true, no single person owns them, we all own them.
People are sorry about Sanford, Ensign, etc, but they are fallible human beings. I was amazed that some left the Catholic church because they found out some in it were sinners. the point is we are all sinners, but our ideals are not proven wrong just because we don’t always live them. We need those that want a limited government and maximum freedom BECAUSE individuals will always fail us. Our Constitution stands above all personalities, it is the bedrock, no man can own it.
My point is that our failures are our own. What we need is a drastic change in our party, we need to stop the defensive policy crap and focusing on returning freedom and responsibility to the people. Self reliance is what made this country great. If we want a nanny state, there are many so so countries to choose from.

Still don’t see her as the top candidate in 2012, but if she follows Newt’s advice while the rest of the boys play campaign footsy like in 2008- she would stand a good chance.
You can say she is a quitter- technically it’s true, but I prefer to call her a finisher.

DonPMitchell (Diary) Tuesday, July 7th at 1:16PM EST (link)I just don’t get this obsession with folksy, home-spun, semi-educated politicians. We’re not casting actors for an infomercial, we’re looking for a Republican candidate for president at a time of serious challenges. I want someone with an intimidating level of intelligence, a rigorous education and some serious experience. That would not be Sarah Palin.
The impression I get is that the redstate.com crowd loves Palin for one overriding reason — she is an evangelical fundamentalist. Forget fiscal conservatism, forget regaining our former lead in science and engineering education, forget energy and infrastructure. Let’s amend the constitution to make it conform to the bible and use state-operated schools to teach all those Methodist and Lutheran heathens about creationism. Is that what it means today to be a *real* republican and not just a “RINO”?
There seems to be a terrible gap in conservative politics now, between the Sarah Palin supporters on the religious right and the Ron Paul supporters who take ideas about liberty and capitalism to an absurd conclusion. Not many people who don’t toe the line on religious social conservatism participate in redstate.com anymore, but don’t fool yourselves into thinking you represent the conservative majority. I agree with all but
Flagstaff (Diary) Tuesday, July 7th at 8:14PM EST (link)“Romney is Very serious and authoritative when he’s lying to you.” And I don’t mean he isn’t serious.
What is your basis for this statement? Keep in mind that George H. W. Bush was called a liar because he changed his mind and did not veto a tax rate increase that he thought was necessary. But changing his mind didn’t make him a liar.
“The press is so powerful in its image-making role that it can make a criminal look like he’s the victim and make the victim look like he’s the criminal. If you aren’t careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.”– Malcolm X, Audubon Ballroom, December 13, 1964
I was waiting for someone to comment on that..
speciallist (Diary) Tuesday, July 7th at 8:53PM EST (link)I didn’t mean to call him or the others, a liar, I was trying to make a point about trust…
I actually fired this off after a half a cup, it was really a rant out of frustration…I like Romney, he’s surfin buddies with my boy Rohrbacher….I’m still not sure if I trust him like I do Sarah……..nevermind….I’m sure I don’t
When I get the time to do it,
Flagstaff (Diary) Tuesday, July 7th at 9:18PM EST (link)I intend to write a diary about the psychology in play when weighting an array of candidates. Including, “why is the dislike for Romney so strong among his detractors?”
I’m glad to see you’re not among them.

Palin's political suicide.
scottbomb (Diary) Tuesday, July 7th at 9:56PM EST (link)Her announcement was a real kick in the groin for me. Unless she runs for Senator, she probably just ended her political career. I’m sure she’ll be useful in campaigns – other people’s campaigns – but she’ll probably never be president.
Most people don’t pay close enough attention to politics to understand her reasoning, regardless of how good it may be. It will be easier for David Axelrod to call her a “quitter” who “folded under pressure” than for Sarah to convince the masses why she quit the governorship. Heck, he’s probably already written a few rough drafts for campaign commercials should she challenge him in 2012.
Of course, I could be wrong. I actually thought the American people would never elect an empty suit socialist with no experience. I haven’t trusted my judgement since.

There is some wisdom in your post.

Scottbomb, since you took a slightly different tack
Flagstaff (Diary) Wednesday, July 8th at 2:16AM EST (link)on this issue, you deserve a serious response.
Although others may have thought so or said so, I haven’t seen any write it here before. I think you’re right. But you were probably right even before her recent resignation announcement. McCain pulled her onto the national stage before her time, possibly destroying any real chance she might have had in four or eight more years. Besides that, hardly anybody will ever be President, so she really isn’t that different from Tommy Thompson, Mike Huckabee, John McCain, or Bob Dole–they all had lots more experience than she has, and they were either eliminated in the primaries or lost to a much less experienced opponent. Not every politician even wants to be President.
She may well agree with me, and her intentions may be to become a representative of conservative ideas and supporter of other conservatives, not a Presidential candidate herself.
Or, she may think that she’s more like Bill Clinton and Barack Obama than she is like Bob Dole and John McCain, and in some respects that is true, too. Obviously, so I won’t belabor the point.
What we all should acknowledge is that the “free press” and its free support of any Democrat is the monkey wrench in the works. Democrats who are clearly “inappropriate” get elected, while clean conservatives are trashed and thrown away. Bush barely overcame the handicap; Obama used it expertly.
Here is a guess from me: IF she is planning to run for President, it’s in 2008 (just a guess based on the resignation timing). She will spend some time in seclusion, writing her book and boning up on international affairs (no pun intended) and sharpening her knowledge of history, national issues and economics.
Only then will she begin speaking about those subjects, making it clear what her positions are and why the Democrats’ positions are wrong. She will hammer Democrats on every inconsistency in their performances, everything they’ve done wrong, everything they’ve switched positions on, everything they’ve lied about. She’ll eschew her own personal story in favor of her personal and public charisma and powerful ideas. She’ll be able to make a series of speeches, each one on a specific issue, rather than each one having to cover the whole field.
Her interaction with the press will be limited to press conference Q and A’s on specific topics, not half-hour or longer one-on-one interviews. She’ll take her message to America in new ways that bypass the filter of the SCUM. If she can carry it off, she will be nominated and probably elected if she continues to promote conservative ideas forcefully and without equivocation.
If she does this, the fact that she resigned as Governor of Alaska will be meaningless to voters. They’ll recognize it as a politician positioning for an attack, and they’ll appreciate that it was a necessary move, because without it she’d have been tied up in Alaska, swatting flies.
OTOH, if she follows almost any other path, she won’t be able to overcome the “novice, not-ready-for-prime-time” label.
And you are right, “Most people don’t pay close enough attention to politics to understand her reasoning,” in fact they don’t pay enough attention to even be aware of the atrocities of the Obama administration–GM, Chrysler, trillions of dollars of overspending or to know much about Sarah Palin eiher way. In fact, most of them probably couldn’t tell you that a trillion dollars is a million dollars, a million times. So for a whole lot of people, the next time they hear a speech by Sarah Palin will be the first time they hear a speech by Sarah Palin. She still has plenty of opportunity to move forward on the national scene.

I hope you're right, Flagstaff
scottbomb (Diary) Wednesday, July 8th at 10:37AM EST (link)She broke my heart the other day. I just don’t buy the idea that it was necessary for her to quit the governorship to pull it off. Other governors have been elected president without first resigning. On the bright side, the dems have searched high and low for dirt only to come up empty handed. If this is all the ammo she gives them, it may turn out to be a challenge she can overcome.
