2014 Top GOP House Primary Targets!

“Let’s face it: we will never cut spending without conservatives on Appropriations.  We will never implement a pro-growth flat tax without conservatives on Ways and Means.  We will never restore the free market and implement a proper replacement of Obamacare without conservatives on E&C.”

—Daniel Horowitz

These members are RINOs with some of the lamest scores. They are fiscally irresponsible, voting against spending cuts and for big government legislation. We must defeat the RINOs in these committees as well as those outside. The only way we will keep conservatives in these committees if there aren’t enough for Boehner to rearrange. If you have any ideas, suggestions, or comments…please do so below! (Also, we seriously need to target the open seats of Emerson (R+13) and Capito (R+8)—best opportunities!)

RINO Members of the Appropriations Committee:

-Aaron Schock (R-IL 18): 63% Lifetime Score from Club for Growth R+10

-Diane Black (R-TN 6): 71% from Club for Growth Scorecard-Freshman R+15—She isn’t a RINO necessarily, but we can do better.

RINO Members of the Energy and Commerce Committee:

”This is a long-term strategy, but conservatives better begin playing this game.  Otherwise, the establishment will continue to put our guys on C committees.”

So while none of these guys are perfect you are talking about what 3 who are under 80% and only one under 75%.
I believe in electing the most conservative people who can win, and this is why I have a huge problem with the club for growth as of late, and talks of attacking republicans in states like Illinois, WV, and Oregon is just laughable. We need those guys, they may not always vote with us, but getting a 64% conservative republican in West Virginia (where pork is king and the population is ancient and hates any talks of medicare cuts) is a pretty good deal for us, running someone from the far right of the party probably isnt going to win that district (no matter how Cook rates it, because as WV has strongly shown, Presidentially republican, locally democrat is a common mantra of WVs.

    • http://llphsecondrevolution.wordpress.com/ spoasteph97

The purge that Boehner committed was only able to be done because he had RINOs to replace the conservatives with. Imagine if he had less RINOs, he would have to put more of these conservatives on the powerful committees.

And I put the PVI numbers next to these districts. I’m not asking for a saint, but do you really think we should have a bailout supporting, earmarker from Alabama??? Is that the real best we can do? If it is, conservatives should just quit and give up on improving America.

      • revtm

look, a lot of these guys have years of positive conservative views, i dont think ANY would be considered RINOs, and yes putting PVI numbers is great but they dont necessarily tell the whole story. a PVI in Illinois is not the same as a PVI in say wyoming.

Even considering a primary challenge against Shock, Shimkus, etc. is just silly considering who they would be replaced with is most likely a democrat.

I see nothing wrong with getting the most Conservative person we can in some of these districts but no one with an 80% from the ACU is a RINO. Period. We need to embrace some of these people and not throw them all under the GD bus.
As for the “purge” theres more to it than just “kicking conservatives off committees, not to mention plenty of very conservative people WENT ALONG with the so called purge (Paul Ryan, Eric Cantor etc.) meaning theres more than just how these people voting keeping them out of these committees.

Finally stay away from primary challenges in WV, IL, Oregon, Ohio etc. because these places are not kind to primary challenges and places like WV are very unkind to new candidates.

        • http://llphsecondrevolution.wordpress.com/ spoasteph97

Ohio??? Remember what happened to Congresswoman Jean Schmidt, who voted to raise the debt ceiling? She was defeated in the primary in 2012 by Tea Party Congressman-Elect Brad Wenstrup.

          http://www.conservativehq.com/article/7046-memo-tea-partiers-it%E2%80%99s-primaries-stupid

Read the post above. Also, Wenstrup defeated his Democrat opponent by a 59-41% margin, just as large of a margin that Schmidt has beaten her opponents in the past.

Also, would you at least agree that conservatives can win in places like Kentucky or Alabama? Look at Tea Party Congressman Thomas Massie who defeated his opponent 62-34% (just like Fmr. Congressman Davis’ 52-43% margin).

          • revtm

Jean Schmidt is a different breed. Butler County is more like alabama than Ohio (the 5 ohios really play differently in different places) The Tiberis, chabots, lattas, boehners represent completely different districts than the Jordans and Schmidts of the world.

Alabama I’d consider,Georgia, South Carolina, sure. Kentucky? not so much. Places like Kentucky, Missouri, and WV have strong conservative democrat ties that would scare the crap out of me on a primary challenge.

          • http://llphsecondrevolution.wordpress.com/ spoasteph97

Some of these Republicans are decent…but we need to take some risks. Congressman Massie has clearly shown that it can be done. He won by a margin and his Democrat opponent broadcast that he was a tea partier. In fact, the whole district knew Massie was a tea partier…but they still voted for him anyway.

The point of this article is what Mr. Horowitz stated…conservatives will never advance conservative principles unless we can get conservatives on these top committees. The only way to do that is to defeat mediocre GOP congressmen so that they won’t take these valuable seats.

          • revtm

taking risks is NOT what we need to do. We need to get control of the senate not toss the house on the wayside because 80% isnt enough for everyone

          • http://llphsecondrevolution.wordpress.com/ spoasteph97

80% by an organization that I do not consider very conservative. They have supported legislation that I consider big government in the past. http://www.inhofe.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=PressRoom.PressReleases&ContentRecord_id=3a2708e8-cca5-503d-3b86-69662bc4c136

I appreciate the work that ACU does, but I don’t agree with several of their positions. The 80% that these reps got may have come from their votes for big government legislation. How does an earmarker, bailout supporter from KY get an 86% by conservative standards.

Where should conservatives fight? Should we sit back and watch as Boehner appoints mediocre congressmen to these committees? Big government legislation like the debt ceiling increase only passed committee because of these mediocre reps.

          • revtm

The highway bill is big government? that was probably the best transportation bill ever passed.

Look i get being anti-spending but we also have to be realistic, and a highway bill is certainly constitutional, and probably one of the few legitimate government expenditures there SHOULD be. Was the bill perfect? of course not, it was crafted by democrats in the senate, is it a necessity? yes.

I mean COME ON. as for attacking the ACU, thats just silly, even if you dont agree with EVERYTHING they say, its long represented conservative values and an 80%+ from it shows strong conservatism.

I’m getting real tired of this shoving everything down everyones throat litmus test, cut a foot off because of an ingrown toe-nail style of thinking.

          • commonsenseobserver

Well, maybe, but that’s a pretty low bar. ^^

          • revtm

I still view that bill as a victory, we made the senate democrats make massive concessions on a bill that was a necessity for the continuation of our way of life.

          • http://llphsecondrevolution.wordpress.com/ spoasteph97

Nobody is talking about “shoving everything down everyones throat litmus test, cut a foot off because of an ingrown toe-nail style of thinking.”

I have NEVER encourage primary challengers for the New York or California reps in Democrat districts. You are missing my point…THE MORE MODERATES, THE LESS GOOD COMMITTEE SPOTS FOR CONSERVATIVES!

    • http://llphsecondrevolution.wordpress.com/ spoasteph97

In addition, I’m not asking for a tea partier or someone from the far right. I just want someone who won’t vote for bailouts, who will vote for some spending cuts, and who will make an argument to limit (not expand) government. And PLEASE, let’s not have the ones who make excuses to back off campaign promises!

      • commonsenseobserver

Well, so preferably, we want someone who would have voted for the financial system to collapse and would probably have led to even more extensive and expensive rescue efforts.

TARP and the auto bailouts are a horrible litmus test. In fact, voting records probably are too, since they are influenced by a wide range of factors, such as pressure from the party leadership and to avoid various crises (like a default, for instance).

What we need are people who are willing to campaign for spending cuts, fight for them, educate the public about them, and come up with real, substantive, and big ideas to reform spending and rebalance the economy, and stand up for those ideas when it matters (say, in a nationally-televised debate, since Paul Ryan would have failed under your criteria).

We need someone who can make the case, not just vote for it. And we need people who can fight to get the best deal possible, and get things done.

    • electconstitutionalists

ACU ratings are awful. I give them no credence whatsoever.

  • JKnight

I wonder what their scores would be if you excluded years where Republicans were in opposition…in other words, their votes did not truly matter to the outcome). I bet we would find the scores are a lot lower in some cases.

  • commonsenseobserver

Um, that’s very ambitious (and stupid). I mean, seriously, Devin Nunes?
And I think Adrian Smith shouldn’t be judged on one term alone if his lifetime score is so much better.

    • http://llphsecondrevolution.wordpress.com/ spoasteph97

It is just a suggestion. I would note that Adrian Smith was much better (like a lot of other GOP members) when they weren’t in control. Conservatives shouldn’t target all of them, but if we kick some of them out of office, Boehner won’t have another choice but to place a conservative in that committee.

  • commonsenseobserver

Our best bet is a “decapitation” strategy aimed at the Committee Chairs, such as Camp, Rogers, and others.

    • http://llphsecondrevolution.wordpress.com/ spoasteph97

The main point of this diary entry is to find ways to get conservatives back on these top committees…which is to defeat these mediocre GOP congressmen.

  • http://ridersonthestorm101.blogspot.com/ SE-779

David McKinley has been touted as a Conservative alternative to Shelley Moore-Capito for the WV Senate race in 2014.

Looking at those numbers, he could have some problems.

    • revtm

Capito is pro-choice. Shes also the best possible candidate the GOP could have in WV. they better leave her alone

      • http://llphsecondrevolution.wordpress.com/ spoasteph97

I don’t mind letting Capito take the senate seat…conservatives need to focus on her house seat! Let Capito defeat Rockefeller (if she can), conservatives have other work to do,
