Let me say first of all that I loved Sarah Palin when she was announced as John McCain’s running mate. To the extent I am biased, I am biased in her favor. After she was announced, I did a lot of research on her, since I am the kind of person who actually likes to know about the people I vote for. I loved the fact that a hard working, normal person had managed to take on the establishment up in Alaska. As a woman, I found it refreshing that another woman was seeking high office based on her own qualifications, and not because she was riding on her husband’s coat-tails or using her affiliation with a famous political family. The more I found out about Palin, the more I liked her. And then she gave that speech at the Republican Convention - she blew me away. I had recorded it, and I ended up watching it three times - each time with a different set of neighbors who I invited over to see it. I also think she blew away the debate with Biden.
Then came the disastrous interviews with Couric and Gibson, the media attacks, the unfair (but funny) SNL skit… was Palin clue-less, or was it the McCain camp mishandling her? To me it was obvious that Palin did have some gaps in knowledge when it came to some areas, particularly foreign affairs - but, on the other hand, she wasn’t going for the highest office in the land. And given the fact that she is obviously a quick study, I felt sure that, if she did get elected, she would quickly pick up what she needed to know. She certainly would have made less of a mess in foreign affairs than Hillary Clinton seems to have done.
So, despite everything, I was still very pro-Sarah and looking forward to voting for her in 2012 if she decided to run.
Unfortunately, when she gave up the Governorship of Alaska, she made me have serious doubts. I understand that the media treatment of her has been brutal - and way beyond anything most politicians have to put up with. I realize that as a mother, her first instinct is going to be to protect her family. And the whole Levy Johnston thing - who knew the guy would be so incredibly disloyal to the mother of his child as to tell vicious tales about her mother?
However, despite the inferno of bad press that Palin was subjected to - she had a reputation as a fighter, and I was hoping she could persevere. When she resigned, she not only made me wonder if she really is as tough as I thought she was, she also let down the people who voted for her.
The reason this is relevant to her possible run as President - who really thinks that if Palin gets nominated again, and then runs and gets elected, she won’t have to run through the gamut of even more brutal media attention? Ronald Reagan was treated shabbily and dishonestly by the press. So was George W. Bush. It’s a truism that if you are a conservative politician in America who is actually accomplishing something towards the advancement of conservatism - you are going to be a huge target for media attacks.
Given that Palin bailed on Alaska, does she have what it takes not to bail on the rest of us if we give her a second chance? To me that is the most important question.
Now, I do think she is being quite clever to position herself in the public eye in a different way - she’s obviously re-branding herself. And I think no matter what she will be able to exert a great deal of power in the conservative movement as a King-maker. But does she have what it takes to become our next President? On that question, as far as I’m concerned - she needs to prove herself to me.

A caveat about her resignation as Governor of Alaska.
jeffreywturner Sunday, November 15th at 5:00PM EST (link)It was costing the state a bunch of money and time for her to remain as Governor. I think it was best for her to step down.
My understanding of the reason for this, is that there are very distinct and peculiar rules regarding ethics probes of state officials there.
My understanding is that no matter how baseless and rediculous the charge, ANY formal ethics complaint MUST be addressed with a formal investigation. So every time one would get dismissed, a new liberal activist would lodge another one just to keep her bogged down, which was hurting the state.
These rules in Alaska probably need to be changed, so that the investigating authority can just dismiss frivilous complaints out of hand, but until they are changed, it probably isn’t a good idea for someone like Sarah, who is now a magnet for partisan attacks, to occupy the Governor’s chair.
“Life is too short, can’t we all just eat pork and kill some terrorists?”
You can burn that caveat Jeff.
mbecker908 Sunday, November 15th at 5:19PM EST (link)1. Who do you think pushed the current ethics laws through the legislature in AK?
2. “A lot of money.” So what. So you’re saying that because a state has to pay to defend baseless charges that officeholders should step down? Let’s get in line and start filing ethics charges against “Whoever”.
3. In the world of weak excuses to resign that is #2. #1 would be “It’s for my family.”
Oh, and if anybody thinks they hauled out the “nasty machine” to attack her as Governor what in the world do you think would happen were she to run for President.
?
jeffreywturner Sunday, November 15th at 9:04PM EST (link)1. Excuse me, but does the fact that she helped to implement the current ethics provision somehow argue against my point?
2. No, I am not saying that ANY officeholder should step down over baseless charges. I am saying it was a good idea for HER to do so. Have you noticed that no such baseless charges have been lodged against her successor?
Let me say again, I think the laws should be changed, but UNTIL that can happen, I think it hurts the state to have a target like Palin in the Governor’s chair.
“Life is too short, can’t we all just eat pork and kill some terrorists?”
Yes it does.
mbecker908 Sunday, November 15th at 9:24PM EST (link)The actual legal charges are chump change at the state level.
She cut and ran at the first real fight. If someone manages to push the yahoo email thing she’s going to get her head handed to her. I’m reasonably sure you’re not so dense as to understand that. Those “charges” aren’t baseless.
And, with respect to having her as a target in the Governor’s chair, why would anyone want to have her “as a target” as a candidate.
She may one day be able to run for national office, but that one day won’t be in this or the next decade.
You are certainly welcome to that opinion.
jeffreywturner Sunday, November 15th at 10:22PM EST (link)But that is all it is, an opinion.
The Yahoo email charge isn’t baseless. It is however silly and petty.
EVERY presidential candidate is a target. However, not every rediculous charge levied by every crazy nut against a presidential candidate (or sitting President for that matter) is required to incur a state-funded formal investigation.
This is my point. As a presidential candidate, and as President, she will not be subject to the well-intentioned, but unreasonable ethics rules that she was subject to as Alaska Governor.
By the way, you are correct about THIS decade, but not the next.
“Life is too short, can’t we all just eat pork and kill some terrorists?”
The Yahoo charge is not silly and petty.
mbecker908 Monday, November 16th at 11:48AM EST (link)Think of William Jefferson using Yahoo email to set up bribes. Or Senator Obama using Yahoo to deal with ACORN. Etc, etc, etc.
It is a blatent effort to hide communications that would ordinarily fall under open disclosure rules or show up as part of legal discovery. It’s serious business and indicates an attitude on the part of the particular executive that they know they’re doing something they shouldn’t be doing and they want to hide it.
It’s a big deal.
If she had been setting up bribes unsing Yahoo?
jeffreywturner Tuesday, November 17th at 3:55PM EST (link)She’d probably be on the way to the same place William Jefferson is headed to, now wouldn’t she? But she isn’t, because that isn’t what she was doing.
C’mon man, be reasonable here. It isn’t like she was sending an encrypted message to Al Qaeda to arrange an arms deal in exchange for hostages.
Heck, I have sent business email on my aol account before, because the server was down and I didn’t feel like waiting for IT to come fix it. I did technically violate company policy in doing so, but it isn’t the end of the world.
This email thing, and the fact that she brought her daughter along to spend some time with her on a business trip, are the only accusations against her I have heard that aren’t completely baseless. If spending time with her daughter and using the wrong email account are the worst things anyone can find on her, especially given with the microscope the rabid media used on her, that tells you she must be pretty clean.
“Life is too short, can’t we all just eat pork and kill some terrorists?”
Get off it Jeff.
mbecker908 Thursday, November 19th at 8:12AM EST (link)I didn’t say she set up bribes. I said that what she did is on the wrong side of legal. And it was absolutely stupid.
And I don’t know what business you’re in, but in the businesses I’ve been in for a long time, using a Yahoo account will get you fired so fast your hair will hair fall off. Federal regulators like nothing better than finding stuff like that, even if it’s 100% innocent, because it gives them a reason to subpoena your server.
I have a bunch of friends who work for all sorts of different kinds of firms - all regulated - and one email on a non-business account and you’re face down in the parking lot. Lots of places have strict bans on calling a client or a supplier from a non-company phone.
The point is simple, you let her get away with it and you have no reason not to let Jefferson, etal do it too. Besides, it’s pretty obvious - unless you’ve got KoolAid powder in your eyes - that she was attempting to bury communication on this for whatever reason.
With respect to the daughter thing, I could care less about that as long as she paid for her travel and expenses. Bill the State and I’ve got a big problem with that as well. When I was doing “corporate” stuff I was free to take my family on business trips as long as I paid for their travel, rented a separate car for their use during business hours, paid for their food and entertainment and any hotel upgrades because they were there.
This is stuff you don’t need a microscope to investigate. It’s a case of stupidity in plain sight.
Oh, and as far as the media going after her on “ethics” charges, given that she really made her bones in high level state politics on ethics not issues, I have absolutely no problem with it at all. I think it’s a matter of karma.
Why don't you get off it?
jeffreywturner Thursday, November 19th at 10:48PM EST (link)You are the one being unreasonable.
“Face down in the parking lot”
What are you talking about? They didn’t do that to REAL criminals like William Jefferson and Duke Cunningham..
This is so silly. Her email address on Yahoo was Gov.Sarah for crying out loud! If she was trying to “hide” something, don’t you think she would have picked something else?
Give me a break.
Also, you are talking through your rear when you say using a yahoo email “gives them a reason to subpoena your server”. Think about what you said. You are saying that NOT using your server, gives someone a reason to subpoena your server. Think of how asinine that is.
You are obviously so intent on not giving in, that you are just making things up to try and prove your point. It has gotten to the point though, that the things you are making up don’t even make sense.
I am just saying we should be “reasonable” and not try to “cast the first stone” when it comes to Palin because no one is perfect, but you are obviously a sufferer of PDS. I thought that only afflicted liberals, but apparently there are a few on the right who suffer from it as well.
By the way my brother, there is no such thing as karma. That is a idea propagated by people who worship cows. If you would like to learn about the one who is deserving of our worship, I would be happy to share with you what I know about him, just let me know.
God Bless You my friend.
“Life is too short, can’t we all just eat pork and kill some terrorists?”
That Ethics Act was between her and payday;
Achance Sunday, November 15th at 5:30PM EST (link)just that simple. It may still be. She’s subject to it for 2 years after leaving office and if there is anything in that book regarding State government that wasn’t already released to the public, she’s back before the P-Board or the Courts on Ethics Act charges. If necessary, I can quote from the letter on potential Ethics Act violations I got from her Administration, so I have absolutely no sympathy for her.

IIRC...
rbdwiggins Sunday, November 15th at 5:59PM EST (link)The State of Alaska does not pay the legal expenses for the defense of an ethics complaint filed against the Executive.
Which, according to your revelation, could be the reason most reviews equate her book to milquetoast.
“Well, the trouble with our liberal friends is not that they are ignorant, but that they know so much that isn’t so.” – Ronald Reagan
Not true. The State will release and indemnify
Achance Sunday, November 15th at 6:39PM EST (link)you if you approach the Ethics Attorney with what you’re planning to do and they give you the OK. Palin has spouted a lot of either ignorance or propaganda about this since she tried to act like she wasn’t subject to the Act that she so liked to brag about.
In Vino Veritas
Thanks for the info Art, but what happens "after-the-fact?"
rbdwiggins Sunday, November 15th at 7:13PM EST (link)I wasn’t referring to pre-clearance, such as the book deal, but complaints filed against prior actions, such as those filed by George Soros’ minions.
“Well, the trouble with our liberal friends is not that they are ignorant, but that they know so much that isn’t so.” – Ronald Reagan
Even those. You ask the AG for a determination
Achance Sunday, November 15th at 7:20PM EST (link)if the action was within the scope of your duties and authorities and if so ask for indemnification and defense. If they determine you weren’t in the scope, you’re on your own.
She simply got some bad advice and on the emails is just trying to delay and obfuscate. I’ve had all sorts of complaints filed against me. If you do anything you’re always PO’ing somebody, and I’ve never spent a dime on defense. Either I handled it myself or the State handled it for me.

In other words: Milquetoast... nt
rbdwiggins Sunday, November 15th at 7:38PM EST (link)“Well, the trouble with our liberal friends is not that they are ignorant, but that they know so much that isn’t so.” – Ronald Reagan
No, not really.
Achance Sunday, November 15th at 7:58PM EST (link)I was subject to the old law, not her new improved one, but there isn’t any substantive difference. It applies to an appointee in the same manner and for the same things as to an elected official. They were making some really bad choices in some things they were doing in the labor relations environment and some of the unions, my former adversaries, came to me. I took the work opposing the State and my former subordinates because I understand the law and know what I can and can’t do. Palin’s administration was madder than Hell about it but all they could do was huff and puff and threaten to blow my house down. I really shouldn’t complain about the Palin Administration because their mistakes have made me a lot of money.
The key is you can’t do politics on State time and equipment while employed and while employed and for two years after, you can’t use your position to include non-public information obtained as the result of your position for your personal benefit.

Should have clarified...
rbdwiggins Sunday, November 15th at 8:16PM EST (link)The later reference was to the book reviews.
“Well, the trouble with our liberal friends is not that they are ignorant, but that they know so much that isn’t so.” – Ronald Reagan
this is a good point
ssohara Sunday, November 15th at 7:42PM EST (link)If she was facing either personal financial ruin or the possibility of adding to the debt of her state - then it makes sense for her to do this. I would still have preferred she find a way to fight it, though… I wonder if there were any chance of tort reform to address the frivolous complaints being filed against her?
So, you don't bother to read the threads you comment on, huh?
mbecker908 Sunday, November 15th at 8:12PM EST (link)The only reason she “was facing personal financial ruin…” is because she wouldn’t go to the AG for certification.
As far as the “debt of her state”, the legal fees - in terms of the state budget - are chump change.
In the world straw men this particular argument is the straw king.
Oh, and guess who wrote the latest version of Alaska’s ethics laws. Hint: it wasn’t Art or me.
The Alaska Attorney General is the Governor's appointee
Achance Sunday, November 15th at 8:22PM EST (link)and effectively, the Governor and the Government’s lawyer. This is so much the cast that the call for an elected AG who would be “the People’s lawyer” is a perinnial in Alaska politics. BTW, I don’t like elected AGs, when they’re elected, AG stands for Almost Governor.
Anyway, the complaint here is more commonly that the AG is too deferential to the actions of appointees and elected officials, and unfortunately, it is sometimes true.
Her AG was her handpicked Mat Valley guy, not a Juneau or Anchorage insider, who would do anything she wanted, at the expense of his own reputation elsewhere in the State. He ultimately had the good sense to resign and is now mayor of Palmer.
Alaska’s Ethics Law is no more onerous than any other state’s and less demanding than some, at least on paper. She and especially some who worked for her just didn’t think it really applied to them. Then she put herself in the position where she couldn’t tell all to the AG, so she went for private counsel. And if you don’t know how legal bills for politicians work, you’re too naive for this discussion to go much further.

Defeating ObamaCare in 2009 is likely more important
6eorge Jetson Sunday, November 15th at 5:38PM EST (link)than the choice of the Republican nominee in 2012.
I know Sarah’s on her book tour and all. For disclosure, I am agnostic as to a Palin candidacy in 2012 at this point. It’s way too early, nature will take its course. Nature won’t take its course in America, however, if the Dems are successful in jamming ZeroCare™ down our throats.
I agree with you on this
ssohara Sunday, November 15th at 7:40PM EST (link)Obamacare would be an unmitigated disaster and is THE NUMBER ONE priority. That and actually preventing more terrorist attacks on our soil.
I hope the GOP picks a decent candidate to kick Obama out, though.
Maybe I Need Clarification.
JX12 Sunday, November 15th at 6:05PM EST (link)I thought Palin’s family was spending money out of pocket to fight these ethics investigations - to the tune of $500K and counting by the time she resigned. Perhaps I’m misunderstanding - but if that is, in fact, true, then her family would have had to move from the governor’s mansion to the poor house the day her term expired.
As to getting in line to start filing ethics charges against “whoever,” that’s allowed by Alaska law, so we could, in fact, do precisely that to the next Democratic governor were we so inclined (although I happen to believe we have more class than that).
Based on what I know of Sarah Palin up to this point, I trust that she has a sincere and honest heart (which already puts her on plane above nearly all the Democrats and a fairly sizeable chunk of Republicans in my book, including Palwenty, Romney, and, yes, Huckabee) - so I therefore trust that she had a genuinely good reason for resigning. Since sincere and honest hearts do not - by themselves - complete the package necessary to make for an effective president, we’ll have to see what else she has to offer in 2012 should she choose to run. Having said that, I, for one, am willing to give her the benefit of the doubt on her resignation from the governorship of Alaska.
Naive? Time will tell. Nevertheless, I still vote, and I’m not alone.
JX12 see Art's comments on Palin's "legal defense $$".
mbecker908 Sunday, November 15th at 7:30PM EST (link)There is no reason for her to spend a dime of her own money for defense against ethics complaints. Since she “wrote” the law you’d think she’d know that.
All she had to do was go to the AG and ask for a determination that what she did was within the scope of her duties as Governor. If she was unwilling to do that, why do you think that might be????
You bet you’re naive.
You make a really good point re. Palin's heart
ssohara Sunday, November 15th at 7:45PM EST (link)I too think she is more sincere and honest than most of the candidates out there.
Look, she didn’t decide when she was 5 years old she’d be President. She worked hard and raised a family and got into politics it seems not out of egomaniacal ambition but for the right reasons - to bring about positive change and make a difference.
IF she can find ways to make herself credible - which is harder since she can’t point to 4 more years experience as Governor - I would love to see her run. but if she’s going to split the GOP so that we hand Obama a second term… SHUDDER!
No, he doesn't.
mbecker908 Sunday, November 15th at 9:18PM EST (link)You have no clue what’s “in her heart”. That is more touchy-feely crap than should be entertained in one diary.
If you had a freaking clue about her “career” you wouldn’t have included that second paragraph.
Hey, please enlighten me
ssohara Sunday, November 15th at 11:56PM EST (link)I did read up on her bio, and as far as I knew, she didn’t seem to have any political ambitions early in her life. What do you know about her? Feel free to shed some light… I’m curious.
I neither know or care about her "early life".
mbecker908 Monday, November 16th at 11:52AM EST (link)I care about now and recent history. Read Art’s comments above about working with Palin. I put a whole lot more stock in them than in her bio.
Frankly I really don’t care “where her heart is”. I care what she’s accomplished (basically nothing) and how effective she is at dealing with government infrastructure as the executive (not very).
If you want someone with a “good heart” repeal the 23rd Amendment and draft GWB for another round. He was and is a good man with a good heart. He’s also one of the three worst Presidents in the last 100 years.
"... didn't seem to have any political ambitions
Achance Monday, November 16th at 12:14PM EST (link)early in her life.” She was born in ‘64 and was in an elected office in ‘92. That would make her 28 when she held the city council slot, that’s pretty young for a Republican even here in Alaska, a very young state. You don’t just pop up and get elected, so she had to have been working politics for awhile, PTAs, civic groups, and even churches are political, too.
So, she got out of college, did a bit of sportscaster work in ANC then went mommy for awhile and has been either in or campaigning for elected or appointed office ever since. No, not much political ambition there.
