Prognosticating the Paucity of World Economies & Money Aggregates; Declaring the Abundance of Divine Providence

It is without little wonder to your average conservative minded pro-free market individual just exactly why it is dangerous to pick winners and losers in the free market. Are we doing enough to message our concerns to others?

President Barack Obama is without a doubt working to destroy our way of life. I don’t consider him the ‘evil incarnate of the Anti-Christ in political garb’… he very well may be perfectly amiable to share a beer with over chit chat about golf, or basketball. However, it is my considered opinion that the measures he has taken as Commander in Chief has been to undermine the financial strengths of our nation, while distracting us with horrible foreign policy maneuvers, and an all out assault on the morally responsible culture of our Nation.

Know your Enemy is Ignorance, and Apathy

For all our directed outrage at President Obama regarding his “I’m just trying to spread the wealth” mantra, or gross infringements on the principles of the Constitution being violated by the GM Bailout, or Solyndra’s investments, and any other failed Stimulus project, we must be cognizant of the fact that it was Congress that gave him the money to waste.

Prosperity does not require the cost of disparity among socioeconomic definitions designed to drive wedges among “We the People”. Fighting disparity by suggesting that prosperity is rooted in evil rather than fighting the idleness of sloth is the preeminence of Envy (a deadly sin indeed). Suggesting that Greed is what drives prosperity is the preeminence of Pride (a deadly sin indeed).

Money is not emotion. When emotion determines what we do with our money, the result tends to be the loss of prosperity. We are all stewards within our sphere of influence, and to each is owned the right to grow or shrink their sphere of influence. When it comes to Money aggregates there is but one protection that no government can interfere with, and that is the ETERNAL VIGILANCE of a PEOPLE that will NEVER lay down their LIBERTIES, for some sense of economic security whether real or perceived.

“[B]elieving, as I do, that the mass of the citizens is the safest depository of their own rights, and especially, that the evils flowing from the duperies of the people, are less injurious than those from the egoism of their agents, I am a friend to that composition of government which has in it the most of this ingredient. And I sincerely believe, with [John Taylor], that banking establishments are more dangerous than standing armies; and that the principle of spending money to be paid by posterity, under the name of funding, is but swindling futurity on a large scale.” — Thomas Jefferson wrote in a letter to John Taylor on May 28, 1816

Now I will dismiss any ridiculous thoughts that suggest Thomas Jefferson was totally against banking… instead in the context of this quote, he was discussing an established bank for the Federal Government. Again, the purse strings of Treasury, and all things attached belong to Congress, and not one dime is spent without Congress approving the expense through legislation, again it was Congress that commissioned the Federal Reserve. It was congress that designed fractional reserve banking. It is Congress that is able to provide a Budget to the Executive to establish regulatory commissions, which are KILLING competition at this time, and more recently are outright KILLING markets!

VIGILANCE

We should be ever vigilant in issues of social conduct where the rule of law applies. We should be equally vigilant in defending liberty and freedom for ourselves, and our allies, and in being a force for great good inasmuch as we are applying our actions as a Nation through the lens of the rule of law. And of course, The Constitution of this great land is perfectly clear on the matters of Economy, regarding protections for Private Property, protections in the Freedom of Enterprise and Choice, that motives of Self-interest shall be protected, that competition will be protected, that prices and markets will be allowed to adjust on their own merits without interference from government unless regulation is needed to protect competition. Finally, none of these provisions in the Constitution can happen, without Recognizing the importance of LIMITED GOVERNMENT. The VERY essence of Article I Section 8, The Enumerated Powers of the Federal Government Specifically Congress.

When seeking for a Presidential Candidate… We must remember that economic plans are designed not necessarily for immediate implementation, but to guide Congress on what legislation will allow the Executive to do what is ‘proper and necessary’ to fulfill its role. So why do Presidential Candidates propose these plans? Primarily to coalesce the will of the people behind their platform, in order to put pressure on Congress, as WE are STILL the PEOPLE. In some form it shows a degree of competence in understanding how to provide CONFIDENCE to the markets, through STABILITY, and INCENTIVE… you see Markets don’t respond very well to unknowns generally known as Risk… The higher the Risk, the lower your pool of investors becomes.

Paucity vs. Prosperity

There is nothing more uncertain in the World Economy among money aggregates than the ability to make good on debts, providing an environment where investment is not halted by fear of meddling aristocrats and evil projections of total egalitarian or utopian civilizations at the expense of LIBERTY through Class Warfare and division. Throwing aside the doctrine of Sovereign Immunity, or non-statutory procedural rules that precludes the actions of any Congress from binding the actions of another Congress in meeting obligations, we should recognize that what establishes the full faith and credit of the United States in the world, is that we meet our obligations, and we grow and prosper like no other nation in the world, and provide more opportunities for growth and prosperity to investors like no other nation in the world.

What the United States of America needs is A Balanced Budget Amendment. To reign in the excessive spending of all branches of the government authorized by Congress.

 

Adjusting the Tax Code may assist, Eliminating the complexity of the Tax code would be quite effective in binding the powers of Congress that leads to crony capitalism, pork barrel projects, and regulation that drowns the competitiveness of our markets. However there are always unintended consequences to consider in removing a monolithic malignant growth from the integrity of our Federal Government’s officers in charge of the purse. Undoubtedly the FairTax or the watered down version of 999 will reduce the ability for Congress to not only manipulate how revenues are collected, in order to benefit lobbying firms and their clients, it does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING on how our Federal Government justifies double accounting ponzi schemes and borrow and spend tactics that benefit lobbyists and their clients with preferred loans or grants to waste and swindle the “FUTURITY” of our children and grandchildren.

For me SUPPORTING THE BALANCED BUDGET AMENDMENT is not a “lip service” bullet point. In the Next Debate… I want to see the contenders SPEND TIME convincing me they understand that “It’s not just the economy STUPID, but it’s also THE SPENDING”.

Please for the life of me, can we move past questioning the integrity of the candidates over ridiculous episodes of personal history? Can we stop giving SOUNDBITES to MASS MEDIA which will stir contention and provide distraction out of PERSONAL MOTIVE? Can we get past the back-biting rhetoric? Can we end the saber rattling, chest thumping anger? Can someone, please, anyone of you on stage STAND UP AND GIVE US OUR MEDICINE?

PLEASE I’M BEGGING YOU CANDIDATES

– What made Reagan so appealing was his ability to DIMINISH arguments of “redistribution” while promoting OPTIMISM, and PEACE THROUGH PROSPERITY, he was not afraid to Demand MORALITY in government both in our domestic house, and in foreign lands. ARE YOU GOING TO HIDE YOUR CANDLE UNDER A BUSHEL? OR ARE YOU GOING TO HELP US GET BACK TO BEING THE SHINING CITY ON THE HILL? All I ask of you candidates is to tell me HOW you intend to do this.

Can we just deal with the Giant “Mormon” Elephant(s) in the room?


This is not a religious diary, its not intended to get you to be sympathetic to Mormons from a religious or political perspective.  Pay attention though, you may learn something from this Perry Supporter.

You may or may not have had personal associations with a Mormon in your life… I have, I am one. I was raised in Utah (there’s a lot of Mormons there), I have lived in several states in my 31 years on earth and have had associations with people of all faiths, with a myriad of diverse backgrounds in both religion and politics.  Pushing aside arguments of bias, I have no problems telling others that when a Mormon lives by the tenets of their faith they are good citizens, good neighbors, dedicated servants of Jesus Christ(as our doctrine instructs), and a morally virtuous people.  I also find that to be true of most people who live by the peaceful tenets of their faith.  I make the “peaceful” distinction as throughout history religious zealots of many faiths have utilized religious dogma for their politics  and when politics are exhausted, they have utilized their dogma for justifying unjust warfare, tyranny, and/or terrorism.

I am a conservative.  I believe in Liberty.  I believe that God founded this nation, and through the chosen vessels of our founding fathers, this nation was formed to be a shining city on a hill.  I believe that the Constitution of our nation is an inspired rule of law debated, written, and signed, majorly, by virtuous men of God.  I believe this specific rule of law has the single most unifying and liberating effect for freedom than any other nation organized on earth and under God.  For all my ideology in American Politics, whether popular or unpopular, my personal faith shapes my views, and helps me to make decisions in my life.  Judge or Judge not… I know where I stand by what I know.

You may have heard that Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman Jr are also Mormons.  I can confirm, they are, by everything I’ve ever been taught to identify an “Active” Mormon.  Media memes aside… They’re Mormon.  Not all Mormons are aligned with every doctrine, thought, revelation, speculation or assumption… for the same reason that general Christianity has well over 1000 identified sectarian interpretive distinct denominations in the U.S. alone. I assume there are distinctions because everybody is learning and experiencing life at their own pace and in their own way.  It is clear to me though, that both Romney and Huntsman are aligned with the culture and distinguished doctrines of the religion that I myself practice, and yet… If you put me in the room with either of them, I think I would be in vehement disagreement with them on several issues when it comes to politics, which may or may not raise my blood pressure and cause me to say unpleasant things to them.

It’s not an indictment of their personal character, and I don’t condemn them in any degree of a religious nature.  I don’t think of them as “bad Mormons”* because I may disagree with their politics on some issues or with their record or their explanation of their records.  I don’t feel that I need to question their integrity solely because I disagree with their purview, or interpretation of the cause and effect of events, ideas, or policies that they have driven as governors or in the private sector.  Ideas have merit when they are implemented and sustained with a desired result.  I don’t have to question their integrity simply because I disagree with their desired results.  I do reserve the right to criticize the idea, and dissent by more than conscience by my vote, and every degree of influence I may have on the votes of others.

I have been a member of Redstate since January/February 2008.**  I came here as a Romney supporter back then (give me a break, I was 27 at the time, and was naive enough to assume Romney was a conservative, because he said so).  Redstate is a wonderful community.  I know of no other website on the web that provides a respectful conservative atmosphere where the members are able to contribute to the content and the discussion and are able to freely debate without bullying from site moderators (in spite of what the many of the banned may tell you, they were all banned for crossing the line too many times). I enjoy this community and all of its benefits, and I hope to continue my association with it.

If you’re still reading this please allow me to elaborate on the title.

With each GOP debate this year, and really ever since I’ve been on this site, comments have been made about the “Mormonism” factor for Romney, and sometimes Huntsman.  It doesn’t really bother me if their Mormonism(or mine for that matter) bothers you enough for you to not vote for them.  That is YOUR liberty in this great nation.  I would defend anyone’s right to make decisions by the dictates of their own conscience. In my view, we all have to live by the consequences of our decisions, and sometimes we all may have to live by the consequences of others decisions.  Which is why we have a rule of law, and we should always respect it, even if we don’t respect the common fool’s inability to choose the right.

So what is the Giant “Mormon” Elephant in the room for me?

I am calling upon Romney and Huntsman supporters that are whining about whether or not the “Mormon” factor may hurt them, to cease and desist with these types of diatribes.  It is what it is folks… deal with it.  As a Mormon I deal with it (and I’m not a politician), and I do it precisely because I’m a Mormon, and I believe what I believe.

As for those who care to bastardize my religious views with sweeping generalizations, I will continue to call you out for your ignorance.  Seriously, is it so hard to just ask a Mormon to clarify something for you rather than nullify anything relevant you have to say by the nature of your embarrassingly erroneous statements about our beliefs?  Just Sayin’.

*I don’t even think that about Harry Reid, although I think his politics are sorely misguided, and I’m curious if he plans to repent in this life for his role in Obamacare.

Understanding How Class Warfare Fails to Solve Our U.S. Debt Problems


Looking at 2008 IRS report of income taxes:

The top 1% of individual tax payers earned roughly 20% of all reported AGI (adjusted gross income).  Let’s break that down shall we?  The implication is that if you are lucky enough to be in the top 1% of earners of taxable AGI, that means you should be able to afford to pay more taxes to help out the less fortunate right?

There’s one problem… when you take a number like that, you’re hiding behind a percentage.

The top 1% of tax payers is roughly 1.4 million people.  To qualify for the “top 1%” group, you’d have to earn roughly $385,000 AGI annually.

What You Should Know is that the top 1% of income earners paid a total of 38% of all individual federal income tax revenue ($410,898,035,220.00 or $411 Billion of 1.1 Trillion collected in individual federal tax revenues for 2008).

Now if you take in the top 50% of income earners (which includes both the top 1%) They paid 97.3% of all individual federal income tax revenues.  If you take out the 38% of all revenues from the top 1%, the remaining 49% of top 50% earners… pay 59% of all individual federal tax revenues.  And who are these dastardly high earners of the “above average earners”?  Why they’re the folks that earn somewhere between $384,000 and $33,000 (that’s not a typo, that’s $33,000).  If you earn $33,000 you’re part of the “above average pay” crowd.  Maybe we should be taxing you more too right?   And what of that bottom 50% that pays only 2.7% of all individual AGI tax revenues?  They(about 70 million) contribute to 12.75% of all reported taxable AGI (which is $720Billion of the 5+ Trillion of taxable AGI in 2008)

So… say we ignore the Laffer Curve all together and decide that we should tax the top 1%… at 100% of earned of AGI (adjustable gross income).  That would take us (based on 2008 revenues reported) to a total of federal income tax revenues to roughly a WHOPPING $1.85 Trillion. (The hell you say? We gain only a total of $750 Billion? Yeah, that’s what I’m saying).

So here are the real numbers: 20% of all individual taxable income is $1,130,463,019,000.00 according to the 2008 numbers IRS reported income. That’s a large number so I’ll shorten it for you… that’s $1.1 Trillion.  Another way to look at it is there is roughly $5+ Trillion in total reported individual adjusted gross income of all individual tax payers, all tax brackets of the which $5+ Trillion is taxable, 20% of that ($1.1 Trillion) is earned by individuals in the top 1%.

Here’s the problem with our hypothetical situation of taxing the top 1% at 100% of total Adjusted Gross Income, we will barely cover our annual spending deficit that bounces between $1.3 to $1.5 Trillion.

Now if we get back to reality and understand the simple concept behind the Laffer Curve… I ask are you willing to see what happens when the top 1% of earners pay 100% of adjusted gross income…?

If so… maybe I should restate the gain of doing such an inane action: That $750 Billion that we would ‘potentially’ gain… will go to paying roughly .051% of the principal of our total debt $14 Trillion (supposing we’d actually attempt to pay down the debt)…   But rather… what would likely happen is the politicians would see this new $750 Billion in revenue as an opportunity to “spread the wealth”.  They’d trumpet long and loud about a “budget surplus”.

You see… there’s but one way to reduce our debt… which is to do each of the following:  cut entitlement spending, cap non-discretionary spending, and increase revenues.

In order to cap deficit spending its going to require some honest folks to pull up their adult pants, and cut entitlement programs that will force people to stop relying on the government when its not necessary {and that doesn’t include social security or medicare}.

In addition… to grow revenues, you should attempt to grow GDP, not bleed a dry turnip (as suggested above by raising the taxes on the rich).  To do so, We’ll need some attractive business incentives to do more business in the United States, including reducing tax burdens on corporations and the top 1%. Also enacting policies that reduce the cost to do business in America.

Now I know its not the popular thing to do… well at least not with President Obama, because he’d like to point out that CEO’s with lots of money (presumably members of the top 1%) like to fly around in their private jet planes, and therefore should be able to afford more taxes.  May I ask you Mr. President, how many golf games have you played during your administration, and how many of those games required you to fly out of Washington D.C. to the location?

Now if you want to play class warfare with the top 1% of earners… be my guest… but let me just say, I think its really a lame attempt at envy… or a calculated political lie meant to create division among the people, and to galvanize political support.

Invective is lame… class warfare is lame… and being asinine about facts is lame.  However, being a divisive, arrogant, hypocritical President… that’s just reckless self promotion.

Some short thoughts on a long and tiring 2012 horse race.


Preface
The horserace for GOP Primary ’12 is on… I have thoroughly enjoyed this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, and this piece, sometimes for the subject of the material written, but mostly for the predicate of the discussion that is for me fleshing out some interesting viewpoints.  Then there was this piece which was absolutely brilliant and brought a lighter side to the zealotry previously discussed.

I believe that Redstate has been clear about what is an isn’t acceptable by site rules or at least some guidelines for etiquette on covering candidates and primary issues here and here.  I hope this diary meets the standards.

Here are some short thoughts on a very long and tiring horse race for the 2012 primary that have been lingering in my mind as I have read commentary from fellow readers.  I hope you enjoy.

The perfect candidate (Rockstars can be devastatingly disappointing):

I might remind everyone that for those who are ‘waiting for the perfect candidate to get into the race’ is an exercise in vain hope.  There are no perfect candidates. Whether you believe the perfect candidate has already declared, or you’re waiting for your candidate, and you believe they’re perfect, well I hate to disappoint you.  However I would suggest that its likely at some point during the primary you will be disappointed in your zealous loyalty for another human being that is bound to make a misstep in one of the following: in strategy, a gaffe, a failure to espouse the perfect policy in your view, or simply shows a moment of weakness in personal integrity or character while on camera, or does something embarrassingly out of character.

Should this unfortunate moment take place, may I suggest that rather than question your loyalty and throw your arms up in the air in dissatisfaction and disbelief, or lash out at other campaigns or candidates that may have been involved in illuminating that moment… we ought to be patient, and allow our candidate to adjust, explain, or re-focus.  It does our candidate absolutely no good to defend them on ground that is uneven, and potentially rigged with snares.  {yes, I did say ‘our’ as potentially your candidate may represent all of us in the general, so they’re all ‘ours’}. Acknowledging insane or ad hominem attacks filled with hyperbole and disingenuous vitriol with equal or in most cases of lesser quality volleys of defense only legitimizes the original attack in most untrained minds.  One thing I’ve learned is that when someone is berating you over something you’re passionate about, find a way move on… as grandad said ‘you can’t win a pissing match with a skunk”.

Great Charisma does not translate into Great Character (The Integrity Principle):

There are an inordinately few politicians that have not been persuaded to change their view on a position or platform.  Flip flop to me has got to be one of the lamest attacks in politics {its like being labeled with cooties}, in conjunction, the equally lame defense of a ‘flip flop’ label is to say one flipped, but never flopped.

For me a politician that understands their duty is to the people, understands their authority to speak from elected office is from the people.  And though there maybe times where a politician may have to go against the grain of those that elected them, when doing so I hope they seek divine guidance and if not providence in helping to change the hearts of the people to do what is right.

That being said… Charisma will not get them through those very rare and difficult times, character does.  It is the integrity of the individual that can effect great change within their sphere of influence.  Generally if a politician or leader speaks out on unpopular subjects they should know that chicanery is not convincing at all.  However if the cause is just, the words and the thoughts will bear them out in the eyes of the people.  This is bravery and courage that stems from humility, not the usual chest thumping and narcissistic smirking that goes on when a politician believes ‘they have fooled all the people all the time’.

The absence of negatives does not equal a positive.

Candidates cannot be defined by what they are not. Too often we hear a candidate dismissed on this site as “unelectable”, “fringe”, or otherwise. Likewise we see comments that suggest “candidate y does not have the x factor of experience, character, or charisma” or some other form of dismantling dismissal of the campaign’s legitimacy. These things are often said among comments that are meant to explain why one should endorse another candidate that doesn’t have the same problem. We’ve got to stop doing this, it is an inane practice.

Passing the mantle of Reagan requires a field of opportunities rather than a harvest of opportunists.

True Americans fight for honesty and search for the truth.  If we can’t find a candidate with leadership that comes from the moral authority of living justly and judging righteously, then we are doomed as a nation.  If a candidate with the leadership quality of moral authority can’t bring most of us along in the primary let alone the general electorate, then our nation is in need of some serious repentance.

I say let the field be wide and deep.  Let the candidates declare their beliefs rather than attempt to convince us of their own ‘charismatic electability rating’  or the ‘fatal flaws’ of their opponents.  Let the candidates understand that if their beliefs are challenged by the people they may have to burn a few bridges to somewhere {even if it means they lose their ‘shot’} to stand firm for what you believe in.  Standing up for what you believe in and losing the primary isn’t something to be ashamed of, it just means it wasn’t your time.  Either the people were not prepared to embrace the truth, or you didn’t do your homework enough to know the truth of the matter, and how to communicate it.  You see it’s not about understanding what the people think they need.  It’s about knowing what is needed and being able to communicate so effectively that you stir the hearts and minds of good people everywhere to stand with you.

This is why Reagan was so effective.  He did his homework, he knew and understood good sound principles of governance because he was tenacious in understanding what was needed and how to communicate it. The right candidate knows the difference between winning an election vs. winning the heart and soul of the nation.
Conclusion

I believe the horse race will be a long and tiring one. I hope for more civility and less ‘flaming’ in the comments section. It is clear to me that this time is most important in presidential politics. I have fears as much as any other, but I believe we must harness those fears by preparatory action for the general election. It is our time to find the leader that will best represent the ideals of three legged stool of conservatism. I for one am not committing to any candidate until all have declared, and one emerges not as a front runner, but in the spirit of the communicator. I would hope to grant the same privilege for all that we may judge for ourselves where the mantle falls without bitterness, bickering, or belittling those with whom we may disagree.  But by persuasion, and possibly some light-hearted (without levity) humor, we may recognize both the serious and not so serious flaws of these fellow humans that dare put themselves out there for so much scrutiny, in order to lead out in front of these very real political battles over the soul of our nation.


To the independents and ‘none of the above’ crowd, Please raise your hand if you can no longer ignore the 800LB JACKASS in the room!


Title Explanation

A favorite English idiom “ignoring the elephant in the room” is ‘often used to describe an issue that involves a social taboo… This idiomatic phrase is applicable when a subject is emotionally charged; and the people who might have spoken up decide that it is probably best avoided.’1 The title was adjusted to make more political sense… because the social taboo is no longer what the Elephant is doing, but rather what the “raucous caucus jackasses in office” are doing or not doing as the case may be.

Failure alone does not even begin to describe the current state of our Federal Government

The Constitution of the United States is revered by all Americans as the document that ‘We The People’ have united under; to form a more perfect union, to establish the law of the land, and to enumerate the powers given to the Federal Government.  It is implied in ‘We The People’ that our government is to represent the people.

And for all the arguments that can be made on how to interpret the pre-amble to establish the ‘spirit’ of the constitution, one darling little fact remains, that the legislative, executive, and judiciary branches throughout the history of the United States have tried to manage failures within and without their respective sphere of influence by over-stepping their bounds on some perfunctory logical argument. When this happens it is the duty of the people to be informed well enough to rectify these infractions or breaches of trust through petitioning one or both of the other branches of government to fix the issue through representation or litigation.  And if all else fails, remove the representatives that have failed the will of the people.

In our current federal government today, we have such ideological demagoguery in each of the branches that effectual gridlock is the result on our best days, and at our worst, action that is deliberately meant to benefit not the general welfare of the people, but the very specific welfare of those with the power to lobby and receive gifts in exchange for the support of our candidates.  Yes, there are specific ways we could put a stop to this, but we don’t.  Mainly because those that legislate, care not to regulate themselves through the principle of integrity.

The final problem with our Federal Government today, besides ignoring the will of the people, and inflating its purpose and reach, is that there is an absolute denial of the proverbial origin of the title of this POST, i.e. The 800LB Gorilla in the room. Which is a mixed metaphor ‘often used to describe a powerful geopolitical and military force, or, in business, a powerful corporate entity that has such a large majority percentage of whatever market they compete within that they can use that strength to crush would be competitors.’2

‘Let me be clear…‘ The 800LB JACKASS in the room is indeed the sinful pride of our Political Class in this Nation.  The very group of people that believe we can stay the course, and ‘fix’ the problems of this nation by creating legislation that requires Congress to not only fail to pass a budget, but not even bother with creating one.  The Political Class sees no division by political parties, platforms, or policies… their division is power and influence only, and the power to maintain that influence.

It’s the Spending STUPID!

At all costs this governmental approach to the economic runaway train needs to be stopped, preferably without de-railing the economic train. The politicians will tell you that spending bills will assist in Quantitative Easing.  That it has and will create jobs.  They will tell you that the budget can handle the deficit spending because people around the world will continue to invest in America. The fact is, if Americans are not investing, the rest of the world stops… and thus the current economic problem.  If only there were policies put into place that would encourage investors and capital markets to take risk. The balance sheets of the world banks are so hampered by the increase of money aggregates and the loss of capital value that there may not be able to even begin the healing process. Americans are saving in their bank accounts, the world is following our cues… If Americans are not spending, the Federal Government tries to make up the difference, but so much is just simply lost once the transfer of money begins, because ‘shovel-ready projects’ just don’t exist, and our infrastructure doesn’t ever get rebuilt properly, if at all.

If only our Federal and State governments and Municipalities began to save too… cause you see, when the government spends… it has to make up the deficit either by generating taxes or printing more money, in either case the spending simply avoids the real problem and in effect mortgages the future based on re-allocating, redistributing, or simply stealing the wealth of everyone in some degree to fund bureaucratic ambitions for political favors.

Conclusion

So as the title suggests… You DO have a choice this midterm election, and far beyond this election cycle…  Make no mistake, Conservatives would have you vote for the candidate that will represent reducing the size of government spending, and if at all possible eliminate the very processes and procedures that allow for corruption. We believe in constitutional principles of limited government.  We hope that you share this same desire.  And although Conservatives represent social issues, and defense issues that you may or may not agree with, I submit to you this – without sound governance and accounting principles of our collective fiscal sovereignty we will be subjugated to the powers of oppression, tyranny, and ignorance.

We ask you to join us, not just for the “throw the bums out” session this November, but in the cause of Freedom, Liberty and Justice for all.  There is a better way to accomplish so much good in so many social issues.  And simply put much can be done without the corruption of government and without it’s bureaucracy.  IF we can reign in our government we can end corruption in any enterprise or system.

Birnbaum to press: I fall on the sword, but don’t accept responsibility


Elizabeth Birnbaum the former Deputy Secretary of the MMS of the Dept of Interior today resigned according to Ken Salazaar “on her own terms, and by her own volition…” 

The talking point may be “a failed appointment by Obama”, or “Ms. Birnbaum was ‘too cozy’ with the industry she was appointed to regulate”…

Yes, I suppose we could go back and forth all day long regarding her failures in the role, and why it was appropriate that she resigned, or was fired, or resigned before she was fired…

Her boss (Ken Salazar) says:

“Elizabeth Birnbaum is a strong and effective person and leader. She helped break through tough issues including offshore renewable development and helped us take important steps to fix a broken system. She is a good public servant. She resigned today on her own terms and on her own volition. I thank her for her service and wish her the very best.”

She says:

“I’m grateful to the President and to the Secretary for allowing me to serve this Administration and the country. It’s been a great privilege to serve as Director of the MMS. I have enormous admiration for the men and women of the MMS who do a difficult job under challenging circumstances. I’m hopeful that the reforms that the Secretary and the Administration are undertaking will resolve the flaws in the current system that I inherited.”

And in her resignation letter she writes to Ken Salazar:

“As you move forward with the reorganization of Minerals Management Service you will be requiring three new leaders … I wish you every good fortune in the reorganization of the bureau.”

Here are my quesitons:

1. Strong and effective persons and leaders are needed during a crisis… so what kind of Strong and Effective person and leader leaves during a crisis?

2. ‘She is a good public servant’… what BOSS can say this about an individual that resigns during a crisis, and recommends to replace themself with 3 people and re-organize the entire dept?

So… I’m left wondering what exactly did she mean by “I’m hopeful that the reforms that the Secretary and the Administration are undertaking will resolve the flaws in the current system that I inherited.” {emphasis mine}

No… I don’t personally blame her for the event of the oil spill at Deepwater Horizon itself,… but I am trying to understand what the flaws in the CURRENT system of regulation for the oil industry that she INHERITED that she’s had nearly 11 months to work on as the appointee that oversees said system, would have ANYTHING to do with her resignation?

Conclusions:
1. Ken Salazar is incompetent in identifying qualities of leaders in his organization.
2. Falling on the sword for the Obama administration means failing not only with a lack of accountability, but also it means you don’t actually fall on the sword… rather you’re rewarded with resume recommendations.

On the contrary, I am in agreement with Ken Salazar. This indeed is “Strong and Effective” leadership… if your goal is to destroy an industry’s reputation, and force your Administration’s political friends to pay your Administration twice.


In all tenderness I say, HUMILITY is the currency of the Righteous, Let us publish PEACE not WAR


I do not speak of humility lightly.

I suppose that the action of bowing petulantly with guile and deceit for the alleged purpose of gaining the respect and popularity among peers and those deemed elite, is an act worthy of being repudiated as nothing more than grandiose cowardice.  I think that covers pretty much anyone who has held public office and has REJECTED the views of their constituents that they were elected to represent, without having done so upon personal principle, and not personal principal.  There are ways of making self serving incumbents ACCOUNTABLE without causing civil war among the ranks.

Civil war will not bring out the best in conservatives that is certain.  It certainly won’t make dishonest people more honest either.  It may be too easy for conservatives to maintain RIGHTEOUS INDIGNATION against “The Establishment” as they lob, toss, fire, launch, and drop the FURY of Political Weaponry upon former allies.  In my estimation, the only thing that is gained from an all out assault on “moderates”, “elites”, “RINO(s)” etc… is a VAIN and FOOLISH stroke of personal Self-Righteousness.  The volley of assaults hurled at the reputations, and characters of those with whom we disagree in policy, practice, and politics will do nothing but tarnish the soul of the Conservative.  There is no TRUE satisfaction in the enlightened soul that seeks purifying rather than the destruction of the house for the purpose of cleansing.

I believe it is too easy to imagine ourselves as Christ, armed with a bullwhip and overturning the tables of the money changers… but let us not forget that WE ARE NOT AS CHRIST.

Those who seek selfish interests by vanity, pride, arrogance, or ignorance serve Evil to public, and as such should be held ACCOUNTABLE. I believe this goes the same for those who believe they have an inherent right to PURGE the people from the party, rather than the thoughts, ideas, and propaganda that they do err.

I would much rather maintain their talents, and their capabilities and PREACH repentance to them until they change or meet judgment.  This is exactly what votes are purposed for in primaries, caucuses, and elections.

WE MUST DECLARE WAR ON IGNORANCE, Not Factions.  WE MUST EDUCATE AT EVERY LEVEL.  WE MUST PROMOTE THOSE THAT ARE BOTH TEACHABLE, and that ARE TEACHERS in the craft of Conservatism.

Displaying FEAR for the loss of the identity of the Conservative to me is a VAIN approach.  We SHOW those that dare to exploit that THEY are UNWELCOME.  AND NEVER SHALL WE BECOME THE DECEIVERS.

How Beautiful are the feet of those upon the mountains that publish peace?

As for me and my house… we shall educate.  There is no need to call into question the integrity of others, rather educate the masses on how to think for themselves and how to judge between good and evil.  If they have learned well because they have been taught well, they shall VOTE well.  One would hope that reason and righteousness is contagious, when it is not PUFFED up… but when it comes from the HUMBLE and MEEK.  Oh surely you shall be reviled, but it shall be for the sake of the truth… and if that is so, you be held in GOOD company.

James Madison gave us a simple truth:

Knowledge will forever govern ignorance; and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives.”

Let us use OUR Knowledge for the Truth, and not some other purpose.

Joe’s ‘Depression’ and 5 cents will get you a nice hot cup of JACK SQUAT!!!


I work for a large corporation that closed my site down.  They pulled us all into a room and said, we’re closing the site down, we’ve got outplacement, we’ve got severance, and we’re offering relocation requisitions for those that want to apply and move with a relocation.  I thankfully received and accepted one of these offers to move my family halfway across the nation and set roots in an area that is completely terrain foreign… Oklahoma or bust…(literally)

I have spent the better part of the last 3 months facing the reality of a housing market bust, taxation on a relocation lump sum payment, the increase in insurance costs, and the undaunting feeling of change… real change… not that fluff that the president is selling us — for.

I don’t appreciate the fact that economic issues led to closure, and consolidation for my site, but I understand why my company did it, and why other companies are doing it.

I also recognize that Joe’s flapping is his honest attempt at describing his understanding of what unemployment means at a personal level…

I also appreciate the anecdotal appeal to the kind of people out there that would rather talk about the effects of depression resulting from job loss…rather than the cause of job loss…(Stimulus, Run-Away government spending, ) than talk about the kinds of things that say… I don’t know… PREVENT JOB LOSS… (reduced spending, less taxation, etc…) and the ensuing effect of personal depression…

In real terms Joe… any ‘Jackass’ can talk about a problem or the effect thereof… it takes people of intelligence to fix the problem or better yet prevent it.


Media Bias in the 2008 U.S. Presidential Election and the Effect of the Blogosphere


Prologue

This is a research paper I wrote this spring regarding Media Bias during the Election of 2008 for a writing class in school.  I haven’t been able to post it until after I received my grade for the class.  I’m primarily publishing this just for sake of publishing it.  My hope is that for nothing else you enjoy it.  Bibliography has been included, and I would like to thank RS contributors and posters for their influence on the scope of the subject.

Introduction

Old media, such as widely circulated newsprint, journals and publications, as well as television and radio broadcasted network news; frame the direction of the public debate regarding presidential elections. The blogosphere is also an important factor as a new media format that utilizes social networks on the web that cater to web-loggers, freelance writers, or even novice journalists. This domain of writing and broadcast has become more popular to younger generations and is an established medium of alternative media to forms of old media.

Both old and new media outlets seem content obfuscating lines of journalistic integrity by accepting bias as a state of normalcy when reporting information, effectively giving direction to the public’s perceptions of presidential candidates. One might ask, ‘Does objectivity matter when reporting on subjects that are as polarizing as U.S. presidential politics?’ Hunter S. Thompson, a prominent gonzo journalist said in an interview with The Atlantic, “Objective journalism is one of the main reasons American politics has been allowed to be so corrupt for so long.” (Thompson, 1997)  Clearly the theory that objectivity promotes corruption is contrasted by the obtuse assumption that we haven’t had objectivity in media since Nixon.  Imagine the kind of corruption we might see if bias was clearly admitted and dismissed. The object of this research paper will attempt to make the case that media bias did indeed have a gross effect on the 2008 presidential election cycle. In turn this effect is perilous in terms of maintaining the freedom of our republic.

Defining Media Bias in a U.S. Presidential Election

Bias in the media whether real or perceived tends to be more systemic wherein events and subjects are selected for coverage by agenda and purpose. Media bias is the abject representation and/or framing of an article by a journalist regardless of tone where an absence of objectivity is detected. Sometimes this bias is individually created by a journalist. Sometimes it is the cause of editorial work that prevents the unprejudiced consideration of subjects related to political and social issues. Admittedly, there are many limitations in journalism that prevent total objectivity, which is why bias is more the complaint of subjective writing rather than objective. However, in our free society, the United States, we experience freedom of the press that offers a free market for journalists to present both their writing and opinion. Journalists are often employed or syndicated and in order to get published they must write the types of articles that editors and news outlets desire to publish.

The Society of Professional Journalists states,

The duty of the journalist is to further [public enlightenment] by seeking truth and providing a fair and  comprehensive account of events and issues. Conscientious journalists from all media and specialties strive to serve the public with throroughness and honesty. Professional integrity is the cornerstone of a journalist’s credibility. (Society of Professional Journalists)

Examples of the device of bias in journalism are substantiated when one detects the following: stereotypes, loaded language, double standards in juxtaposition, unchallenged assumptions, or when stories on important issues are omitted. When journalists do not disclaim a writing as opinion it is assumed they are writing an objective and comprehensive article, and when devices of bias are employed and detected in said article it becomes an issue of journalistic integrity and is labeled as bias.

Studies Conducted on Media Bias in U.S. Presidential Elections Prior to 2008

A working paper by DellaVigna and Kaplan published in 2006 titled, “The Fox News Effect: Media Bias and Voting” measuring the effects of Fox News on voters suggests that

The impact of Fox News on the two-party vote share in 2000 is estimated to be 0.15 to 0.2 percentage points, 200,000 votes nation-wide. While this vote shift is small compared to the 3.5 percentage point shift in our sample between 1996 and 2000, it is still likely to have been decisive in the close presidential 2000 elections. (DellaVigna & Kaplan, 2006)

It is not clearly implied from this statement that their study concluded that Fox News Channel was able to persuade enough voters in Florida counties with narrow margins in voting results that favored George W. Bush over opponent Al Gore. It is also not implied how one should quantify ‘likely to have been decisive’ considering that only a handful of counties in Florida determined the outcome of the election. Another way to describe the “Fox News Effect” is just a little under two-tenths of a percent of the total voter shift from 1996 to 2000 nationwide were swayed by FoxNews. Given that the study doesn’t explain that the numbers are simply an assumed correlative statistic and cannot be directly tied to Fox News and the voters that supposedly should have voted for Gore, I believe “possible to have been decisive” would have been a more accurate description than “likely to have been decisive”.

According to the report, “A Measure of Media Bias” Fox News Channel is centrist. This report was cited by DellaVigna and Kaplan although they suggested Fox News was decidedly right-minded. A Measure of Media Bias reads as follows:

Fox News’ Special Report is approximately one point more centrist than ABC’s World News Tonight (with Peter Jennings) or NBC’s Nightly News (with Tom Brokaw). In neither case is the difference statistically significant… (In fact, it would be slanted slightly left by 0.4 ADA points.) (Groseclose & Milyo, 2005)

Tim Groseclose and Jeff Milyo, authors of A Measure of Media Bias conducted their study to measure media bias based on the ADA (Americans for Democratic Action) scores of both politicians and media outlets relative to the think-tanks they cite. Their method is a quantitative approach to measuring the slant of major media outlets to create a comparative scale. The paper outlines the net result in the introduction: “Our results show a strong liberal bias… These findings refer strictly to the news stories of the outlets.” (Groseclose & Milyo, 2005)

In March of 2008 Alan Gerber, Dean Karlan, and Daniel Bergan released a report titled “Does the Media Matter?” that demonstrates “the results of a natural field experiment to measure the effect of political news content on political behavior and opinions.” (Gerber, Karlan, & Bergan, 2008) In this study they offer free subscriptions to The Washington Times and The Washington Post, both of which were considered in A Measure of Media Bias previously discussed. In the introduction to their report they describe The Washington Times as “conservative” and The Washington Post as “more liberal” citing Groseclose and Milyo (2005) as the reasoning behind these arbitrary labels. Oddly enough, A Measure of Media Bias states that The Washington Times was left of the average member of Congress. This would suggest that at best The Washington Times is centrist. Does the Media Matter? states that:

In our experiment, we find no effect of receiving either paper on knowledge of political events or stated opinions on those events, and on turnout in the 2005 Gubernatorial election. However, receiving either paper led to more support to the democrat candidate, suggesting that median slant mattered less in this case than exposure to media. (Gerber 2008)

One might draw the conclusion that this study is better at practicing bias than the outlets that are measured for effects on the voting population.

2008 Studies Regarding Media Behavior by Pew Research Center

Pew research center released results of a survey in March 2008 conducted between Sept. 17, 2007 and Dec. 3, 2007 interviewing journalists, editors, sr. editors and producers, and executives from national, local, and internet markets. The question of interest is “IDEOL How would you describe your political thinking. Would you say you are:” (Center for the People and the Press a project of the Pew Research Center, 2008) Respondents were given the choices of very liberal, liberal, moderate, conservative, very conservative, and don’t know/refused. Interestingly 53% of journalists in national markets considered themselves moderate, 58% moderate for local journalists, and 46% for internet journalists. More significantly combining very liberal and liberal totals are 32% nationally, 23% locally, and 39% by internet. Combining conservative and very conservative totals are 8% nationally, 14% locally, and 9% by internet. Brent Baker of Newsbusters.org reporting on this survey rightfully titles his article, “Four Times More Journalists Identify as Liberal Than Conservative” and opines, “Only 19 percent of the public consider themselves liberal. And it’s not much of a leap to presume many of the 53 percent who describe themselves as ‘moderate’ are really quite liberal.” (Baker, 2008)

Pew research center for Excellence in Journalism generated a report labeled Winning the Media Campaign which is based on data collected between Sept 8, 2008 and October 16, 2008 regarding negative, neutral, and positive story counts to quantify the tone of coverage for perceived imbalance in 2008 campaign coverage. Most notably from this study, data shows that Obama received more coverage than McCain. Of that coverage, for every 1.4 positive stories published, there was 1 story with negative tone, whereas roughly estimated, every positive story for McCain resulted in 3.5 stories that were published with negative tone. As for the vice-presidential candidates the report states “[Palin] also received less than half the coverage of either presidential nominee, though about triple that of her vice presidential counterpart, Joe Biden.” (Winning the Media Campaign: How the Press Reported the 2008 Presidential General Election, 2008) The report expounds on Joe’s coverage:

Joe Biden was nearly the invisible man. His [campaign] had just one large moment, the vice presidential debate, which also offered his only positive or neutral contribution. Aside from that week, the limited coverage he did receive was far more negative than Palin’s, and nearly as negative as McCain’s. (Winning the Media Campaign: How the Press Reported the 2008 Presidential General Election, 2008)

The findings in this report could not conclusively determine if the media was pro-Obama. “Is there some element in these numbers that reflects a rooting by journalists for Obama and against McCain, unconscious or otherwise? The data does not provide conclusive answers.” (Winning the Media Campaign: How the Press Reported the 2008 Presidential General Election, 2008) The data may not reflect a conclusive pro-Obama agenda by the media as it is not part of the scope of the statistical analysis for the report. However, it is clear that Obama was favored. PEW suggests that “winning in politics begat winning coverage,” which is a reflection that the majority of reporting being measured is related to horse race articles focusing on strategy, tactics and polling rather than policy stance on issues.

Bias in the Media in the 2008 U.S. Presidential Election

For the past two years, several hundred left-leaning bloggers, political reporters, magazine writers, policy wonks and academics have talked stories and compared notes in an off-the-record online meeting space called JournoList.” (Calderone, 2009) As posited by Calderone in the title of his article “JournoList: Inside the Echo Chamber,” the very implication of a cabal of journalists is the essence of group-think reporting. Members of the “JList” often use the communication channel to sound board ideas and express opinion in private debate. There may be nothing illegal or sinister about having a private forum, nor should it be assumed that this group is somehow engaged in message dissemination by agenda. However, issues of group-think arise as is evidenced according to “JLister Eric Alterman, The Nation writer and CUNY professor, said he’s seen discussions that start on the list, seep into the world beyond.” (Calderone, 2009)

The medium of news casting, opinion, and analysis in new media has opened a potentially endless resource market for consumers to find the information for what they are looking. Sometimes journalists of old and mainstream media become the consumers themselves. In the case of “A Blogger, a Baby, a Cry of Concern,” Howard Kurtz reports on the fabricated story that Palin’s youngest son Trig was actually the son of her eldest daughter Bristol. The story originated with an anonymous member of DailyKos.com a blog forum for liberal minded citizen-journalists. All is well that ends well as Kurtz puts it, “While the Web can serve as an incubator for unsubstantiated charges, it also tends to be self-correcting. Another Daily Kos contributor late Sunday unearthed a photo from earlier this year in which the governor looks quite pregnant.” (Kurtz, 2008) The fact that this story lead for over a 72 hour news cycle is an inkling of the effects of an anonymous blogger. Just one blogger can create a yellow journalism moment for old media and another blogger can clear the air. One might be inclined to ask where was the truth seeking media on that one?

Allegations abound in the blogosphere surrounding the media’s intentional dismissal of journalistic probing into Obama’s relationships with Bill Ayers (former domestic terrorist), ACORN (a radical left political urban community organization), Franklin Raines (failed CEO of private mortgage firm, Fannie Mae), Jeremiah Wright (Obama’s racially charged christian preacher of 20 plus years), or Tony Rezko (Real Estate Investor convicted of imbezzlement), etc. Yet the major media outlets spent many days probing every corner of the town of Wasilla Alaska in the hunt for the next Palin article. The alleged troopergate scandal, Bristol ‘s teen pregnancy, Palin’s supposed misunderstanding of the Bush Doctrine or foreign policy relating to Russia; alleged book banning as mayor; cutting funds for special needs children as govenor; Palin’s supposed gaffe in the senatorial duties of the vice president during the VP debate; are all examples of yellow journalism that was part of the regulated news cycle during the campaign. Editors of the Katie Couric interview went to the trouble of omitting key points from Palin during the interview in such a way as to take Palin completely out of context to make her look like a rube when facing the media. Endless overtures of concerns expressed by journalists by the oft used cliché, “one heartbeat away from the presidency” shows an impressive assumption that Palin is not ready for the role based on the misrepresentation of her knowlegde, views, and record of foreign policy, energy independence, and political integrity in the event of a McCain heart attack. Oddly enough the very same issues of Obama’s personal ties to imbezzlers, racists, domestic terrorists, and lack of foreign policy experience never resulted in inquiry but barely by mention to downplay serious implications. In either case facts should be reported and not distorted. Neither should they be ignored by political expedience for candidate preference.

Public perception is formed by the inquiry and reporting from the media and the responses of the candidates in presidential elections. The media is instrumental in framing narrative, storylines, candidate positions on policy (rather than policy issues alone), and the public perception of character for the candidates and their associations. This is important to understand why bias is so instrumental in changing the outcome of an election. As such it is incumbent upon the media to report the truth objectively or to label analysis as opinion to ensure a free republic and a free press that seeks the truth from any source. The New York Times understands this and yet acted with personal interest as they allegedly spiked a story in late October that showed irrefutable evidence of ACORN’s personal ties to Obama, citing the reason “it was a game changer” according to The New York Times employee and author of the expose Stephanie Strom. (Huston, 2009)

The final result in the popular vote was a mere 7% point difference between Obama and McCain, more specifically Obama’s 69,456,897 votes to McCain’s 59,934,814 votes. (Public Disclosure Division of FEC 2009) However the electorates representing the population in the Electoral College highly favored Obama in high density populations where old media has its largest market share. It is quite possible that the measure of bias and tones from the most negative to the most positive are all relative and only perceived. Bias does in fact exist systematically in both old and new media. When the media sways public perception through misinformation, the freedom of an informed republic is threatened. The consumers may speak truth to bias.

Conclusion

In closing a Rasmussen report with a significant analysis the day of the election: “As the presidential campaign comes to a close, a majority of voters (51%) say most reporters have tried to help Barack Obama win the presidency. Just seven percent (7%) think they tried to help John McCain.” (Rasmussen Reports, 2008) Not only a majority of voters believed the media was pro-Obama, but a largely significant difference of perceived pro-candidate bias exists in comparison to pro-McCain media detection.  The integrity gap comes from an outright denial rather than a denunciation of bias when it is clearly perceived by the consumers at large.  Bias certainly affected the 2008 U.S. Presidential election and will likely continue to affect U.S. presidential elections in the future.

To Rick Moron err…[Moran] and any other “true conservative” that has words for Redstate…


It started HERE with a well thought, well worded, well presented argument that we shouldn’t label Deomcrats and Leftists as “Socialists” and “Communists”.   The general premise is that those in Washington aren’t extremists and shouldn’t be labeled with ‘isms’ as they have the same principles that we share in the root of a common Ethical ideology known as Individualism.  That’s some deep thinking for those with insight into the POST-Kantian world of ethics and the views that started with Bentham.

However the malarky is thick and stank in the intellectual’s bantering field.  Most self identified pompous intellectuals tend to enjoy the dialogue, debate, and banter.  All except when their pride gets hurt…

In comes Moe Lane… with some very simple question yes or no questions for Mr. Moran… he could answer neither in under 20 words. HERE

Nothing unusual… I suppose… so why is this a diary?

Mr. Moran ran home and trashed Redstate rather than defending his rather wordy but weak thoughts in the forum he opened.  {Even his trash talk was bloated bloviation invoking the words of Burke and Kirk which really had nothing to do with his… “he was rude to me” diatribe}
From my perspective Moe essentially popped the IQ bubble with a challenge to get active… but was resisted… as is common with people who think too much but never do… I supposed this syndrome could be summed up in those who do, do… and those who can’t… blog.  Then they try to establish their credentials by word count and readership… Lord knows when revolutions take place you have your James Madison’s and your have your George Washingtons… but let’s be real…  You come to this site, and you tell us we’re damaging our cause by calling a spade a spade? {I’m sure all these analogies and colloquials are driving the brainy types mad…}

“Many of my diary posts had been heavily criticized in the past so I was not unused to the notion that I was not a popular poster there. And the diary in question was heavily critical of some conservatives – “angry ideologues” – so I expected the usual mindless name calling from, who else, angry ideologues.”

I’m not an angry ideologue… but I am one who thinks pontificating posture brings nothing to the table.

Furthermore… YOU’RE WRONG. DEAD WRONG.

The democrats and leftists are introducing statist legislation, it can be called nothing else when the legislation is pushed through with absolutely no debate, and when the language of the bill removes inherent rights from Americans that are engaged in “The Pursuit of Happiness”, and expands the influence of government in the Legislative and Executive bodies ignoring entirely the concept of separation of powers, which primarily enacts the opportunity to funnel money to supportive constituents and provides powers to unelected officials appointed to appropriate where the tax-generated capital will go… as in the Stimulus.

Nothing spells statist like pushing through a bill again, without enough time to analyze and debate it, based on the sensationalism of environmentalists who lack the data to back up a real need for creating an energy bill that will do nothing but arbitrarily change which industry generates the most significant portions of energy for the average corporate consumer, which again requires the appointment of unelected officials that may arbitrarily determine the brokerage of carbon credits through a STATE-RUN partisan appointment, thereby driving up costs for the average American energy consumer as in what was passed by the House with the Cap-n-Trade bill.

Nothing and I mean absolutely no other legislation on the table leads to SOCIALISM quicker, than a Single Payer Healthcare system. Given our modern technologies and our ability to aggregate, search, compare, cross-reference, calculate, and determine data, a government option for insurance will inevitably lead to a government run single-payer system. NOTHING about a single payer healthcare system spells INDIVIDUAL. Obamacare is nothing short of a power grab that increases costs and spreads the wealth… and the faulty notion that the buyoff is universal care for everyone is DAMNED FOOLISH, I would know… I was born in Canada, and Naturalized as a US Citizen. I have personal experience in the world of socialized medicine… you want to debate the merits of improving the system start by cutting the COST of health industry for ALL players including the insurance companies… and that begins with TORT reform… unfortunately… STATISTS are doing the smoke and mirrors business saying that all can be accomplished with compromise and cash… Increasing spending doesn’t incentivize the reduction of costs EVER.

So for all the “CONSERVATIVE” talking… that these self-important thinkers blog on about… Let me put it in terms you can understand…

Your Ultilitarianism is getting in the way of your Categorical Imperative, and if you’re not careful enough, hades is waiting with all the karmic vicissitudes of a hypocrite in speech, ‘ever learning and never coming to a knowledge of the truth’.

As for me and my house? Americans that show up to a local events and volunteer to do their civil duty, and truly carry the water in the bucket by becoming a committee member or a precinct chair have every right to label today’s modern leftist democrat a socialistic communist without judgement from the intellectual peanut gallery.

RE: To the Kinder-Gentler Devastating Populists fighting Elitists


I don’t speak for anyone but myself… but I am sharing my opinion…

If you have a pulse and have been reading redstate over the last 3 months you no doubt understand that Sarah Palin has been the subject matter for many posts, and comments of many well-intended and verbosely gifted people.

A call for moratorium on using the Palin trademark by substituting the acronym SWMNBN (She Who Must Not Be Named – Ref Harry Potter’s HWMNBN was used at this site to mask Ron Paul during the 2008 elections to prevent a flood of Internet Ron Paul supporters from overrunning the comments and posts of the site) was a wash and I think some people took a little offense to the idea by not understanding the intent.

Since we’ve continued to see posts of Palin, {not that there’s anything wrong with that}… I have and will continue to support Palin in any role she carves out for herself… I feel as though now is the time to speak up on a few points that have been touched upon by others in comment threads and diaries.

I take issue with some assertions made by those who feel as though they have been “picked on” … “dogpiled”… “roasted”… “challenged”… or any key parlance that would suit your needs to describe what is going on when it comes to new folks on Redstate, and their comments in general. My advice to you is the same as I read when I was new… be prepared to have assumptions and opinions challenged when you come to a website that deals strictly in debating political, economical, and social issues.

I signed up during the primary season in 2008… I made a horrible mistake in coming to this site to declare with broadstrokes a narrow minded opinion about primary candidates… oddly enough I took the route of “none of the above” type post but made a small comment about Ron Paul, and NightTwister (long time redstater) immediately identified me as a ‘Ronulon’… I wasn’t even supporting Ron Paul… just making an erroneous observation from my limited experience in a runaway primary… but I was bumped and thumped in comments until The Hinz rule was initiated…

Now I could have taken offense and never come back… but I was too intrigued with the content of this site. I didn’t get any kindness… but again I wasn’t looking for a group-think blog site… I quite enjoy thinking and discussing opposing views… this helps me solidify good positions, which makes me a better defender of conservative values.

Redstate and its long time users shouldn’t have to re-invent the wheel on posting guidelines everytime a wave of signups come in from people who are hot topic issue/candidate oriented… But hey them’s the brakes… I view this site as a place I like to go to be educated and persuaded by thoughtful insight and articulation. I welcome others and encourage people to join all the time.

CANDIDATES AND ROCKSTARS CAN BE DEVASTATINGLY DISAPPOINTING

Please allow me to iterate my view:
I believe when building a Redstate Army, we need people, plain old regular everyday Americans not “Rockstars” to promote conservative values in any corner of any house in any town of any county, in any state, in this country. We need them highly educated. We need them to not bring the baggage of “my candidate”…

In my humble opinion our society needs to learn patience and pragmatism.

We do not need to win elections on the basis of celebrity… that’s what got us Obama.  It is the Cult of personality that gets us sold on a figurehead… next thing you know society is ignoring the facts and talking about feelings and justifying the bad behavior of the figurehead and then demonizing those with dissenting views or those with a rational thought that doesn’t meet the populism standard.

Please… don’t take it the wrong way…

Sarah Palin is a wonderful human being… but I’m not going to make her political deity… I don’t believe in making anyone political deity…

She is a fine candidate for national politics… but she will need to decide what she wants to do… but make no bones about it… there are two sides to a Palin candidacy – there are those that support her rationally…by contributing to her PAC, or by telling a neighbor about her, or by sharing Palin’s conservative views… and then there are those who are irrationally supporting her in hopes that she can “SAVE THE GOP” or “BRING CONSERVATISM BACK”. The fallacy of these ideas are apparent in the premise…  The GOP has been around since Jefferson and Madison… it doesn’t need “saving” it needs “cleansing”… we’re not baptizing the hell out of politicians in Washington, we’re asking them to represent us, or get their brand of hell out.  Conservatism never left… so it doesn’t need “bringing back” it needs strong minded and hard working people that understand how to hold politicians accountable, in practical ways, to the policy they enact, and the legislation they produce.  We can not accomplish this by setting up Sarah Palin as a deified politician… I’m fairly certain that she is comfortable with all the support she can get… one would hope she realizes that credibility is built on integrity… not celebrity status and bullet points on the resume.

The reason we are failing as a Republic is that we’re wont of doing the heavy lifting ourselves are are complacent enough to find politicians that speak sweetness to our ears and then build idols to them.

The most devastating effect a politician can have is not living up to the deified status that is thrust upon them by good intentioned people desperately seeking representation.  I say… represent yourself daily.


Give me SOME(THING/ONE) to believe in!?!?


This post is mainly for the new folks coming to the site writing diaries about rebuilding the republican party.

I think it is widely known that the Directors of this site are in favor of rebuilding the party, throwing the bums out, and cleaning house when it comes to congressional cronyism, speaking out on conservative principles, re-establishing grassroots efforts, and making dirty people famous, while cheering on the defenders of freedom.  Exhibits A, B, C, D, E, etc., etc.

Just something to think about before adding one more diary to the list of “what ought to be done”.


How the Declaration of Independence is THE guide to the problems Republicans face today


This is primarily a response to Dan McLaughlin’s most excellent “think-piece” as he puts it.  Instead of making a most lengthy thread of response with tangents, I thought I would respond with a post.

Let me begin by saying that I believe that Dan and I, as well as the rest of the ANTI-Obama-marxist-socialist-communist-weak-willed-spineless-power-grabbing-lunatics movement (i.e. anyone that loves God, Liberty and/or the American way) are in total agreement.  The question isn’t “should we reform the republican party” the question so many are asking is “how?”.

I propose we stop talking about reforming the party and simply start defending freedom as it is required by the Declaration of Independence — “whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter” their party and their government.

To me Freedom is at the heart of everything going wrong. We need people and representatives who are willing to defend freedom and not an “R” or a “D” or a anything else that comes after the name.

In the cause of freedom I hope that we can do away with labels of “libertarian” or “republican” or any other sort of ideological identification.  I hope for this not as a stance that supports “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” type of associations, but rather… a rallying cry for all people who love freedom to join under the banner of freedom, we can work out the synthetic differences later, but for now we have to stop the assault of freedom. This unfortunately means to my libertarian friends that you’re gonna have to step out of your comfort zone and stop acting so fringe that your local republican committee sleeps with fear of you banging on their door at 3 AM with a list of grievances. (maybe once a year that’s ok… but let’s move past the rhetoric, and let’s talk about how we can pressure our representatives to support or fight legislation that is either for or against freedom)  I see a whole lot of rhetoric about “getting back to what the founders created”…  I indeed believe that the founders understand the practicality of defending an idea and working out synthetic differences later.  I hope that republicans and libertarians can accept this for the sake of providence in defending freedom.

The Declaration of Indepence in my view is the battle plan for defending said freedom that is prescribed (SEE: Universal prescriptivism) by the founders of this nation.  However I’m not going for the cliche “life, liberty, pursuit of happiness” phrase, rather the stuff that’s around it:

When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

I view that “one people” here circumscribes all who fear the loss of freedom that our founders sacraficed for resulting in our mutual benefit.  I also view that “separation” in our current state is not quite necessary to the extent of revolution, but through separation of ideological alignment we may be able to win our freedoms that are being removed currently.  Essentially I believe that if our representatives are not representing us, we must separate from them I don’t care if there is a D, R, L, I or otherwise behind the name.  I would hope that there are well intended liberals that agree with us on these points.  There is more to this issue found in the Declaration of Independence:

That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shown that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security. –Such has been the patient sufferance of these colonies;

In my view we do not need to “throw off such government”  as I do not beleive we(Americans) have “patiently suffered” like the colonies did. This gets me to my next point.  I don’t want to talk about “How to rebuild the party” any more… I think we simply need to “alter” the party as the D-o-I suggests… and I think by alter we all understand that I mean “throw out the elitist self-serving spineless bums”.

I do believe that we as Americans need to WAKE UP and realize how close we are to handing over the greatest Republic and greatest civilization of any generation in the history of the world which is founded in the Constitution of the United States to Power-Hungry Elitist Wolves who walk about in sheep’s clothing.  The arguments that “drive-by media” is allowing this to happen unchallenged is non sequitur — meaning It is illogical to separate them from the Power-Hungry Elitist Wolves In Sheeps’ Clothing crowd.

Now don’t get me wrong… I don’t believe in that marxian proletariat/bourgeoisie division nonsense as it seems to me that in the United States the working class even prior to the revolution had the opportunity to dream and become.  That’s why we call it the American Dream right?

The point I’m making is that there are many in the role of “representative” that there to gain power, to keep power, and are utilitarian in a “bad way” as in their intent is to destroy freedom to maintain power which means selling out their constituents (I’m looking at you PAL!! and your friends! and others like you!! ad infinitim) and smiling when the press corps take their photos and make excuses for them.

Then there are those that are in the role of “representative” that are either ignorantly following senior representatives playing the game, but may have good intentions and need to be corrected by their constituents or be thrown out!

Of course there are others that are trying or at least trying to convince us they are trying

Still there is a glimmer of hope coming from a “shining city on a hill” where at least one citizen of this town is well aware of the loss a freedom that is taking place and they are fighting the battle.

It is easy for the redstate crowd to identify and support those that are fighting the battle… I believe the onus that is upon us and upon all freedom loving people (including angry liberals who can see what’s going on) to identify whether or not their representative is willing to fight this battle of freedom, and if they aren’t then “throw the bums out“.

We often hear quotes in the vain of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” but do we really understand what equality means in light of this phrase?

John Locke talked about these things and is credited with inspiring Jeffereson’s rhetoric.  Oddly enough he is as inspiring to american liberalism as he is to american conservatism because both derive many principles from a individualism utilitarian ethos.  Where most liberals and conservatives break is specifically on the role of government in protecting these things within specific arguments.  I’d suggest that is how we have been able to reconcile as Americans after each political battle.

However, this last election in my view was the end of reconcilation.  This last election is a representation of “The Politics of No Quarter“.  The liberal elitists in charge lie to their base, and to their opposition and get a pass from the media.  There is no reconciliation, no “bi-partisan” this election has turned into their “final push” they think they have won the hearts of the people, and have yet to realize they have won their minds only (as much gain as that might have).

2010-2012 in my view is our only chance at recovering from this awful state we are in.  We have to win the minds back and bring the hearts along also… then we can get back to working out the differences, but we can’t when there is no statesman willing to debate honestly.

The Encroachments on Freedom should be the issue… it should be what we are debating with our liberal friends… we should stop the banter on the specific issues, and question the motives of their elected leaders… I feel we should spend our time educating people whether rigth, left or center with the some of the following but not limited to:

  1. The Obama Administration has not taken one step towards liberty.  Neither positive liberty (having the power and resources to act to fulfill one’s own potential, with the ability of citizens to participate in their government), nor negative liberty (freedom from being forcibly prevented from achieving those ends).  Where is the promised transparency?  Where is the accountability? Why do we accept the blame game?  If your representative can’t answer these questions, then you must ask yourself, are they representing you?
  2. Every move this administration makes is to increase the size of government, Are you o.k. with the re-distribution of your life(autonomous decisions), and pursuit of happiness(opportunity to own property)?  Do you really think the government ought to legislate your every decision?
  3. This administration is weakening our fiscal stability, They will declare victory while destroying our domestic economic strengths and global position, while positioning oppressive programs that disengage the ethos of the American Dream.  Don’t give me no sass about the previous administration, what is this administration doing about it? Are you ok with what they’re doing?  Does your representative support this administration?  If yes are they representing you?  If no, what are they doing to oppose this administration, are they representing you?
  4. This administration has weakened the defenses of this country by promising open talks with Iran, North Korea, Cuba, etc… have the actions of any of these nations shown that open talks are working?  What are they talking about?  Do you even know?  Are you ok with Iran and North Korea testing ballistic missles for accuracy and distance while in the possession of nuclear weapon materials?
  5. Are you ok with the fact that the media is not reporting to you things like why Pelosi’s remarks are inherently filled with lies that undermine our service officers and our foreign policy strengths?

Freedom is on the decline and is being choked by beauracracy and inflation in both government and economy… and as these go… so does our defense, and our liberty.  I hope this clears up the question.

DHS Extremist Assessment (REVISED EDITION) – No Quarter Politics


The release of this report and its timing is oddly the day before the Tea Parties.  A tactic to maybe scare off the fringe that actually are “Rightwing Extremists” and are worried about being assaulted by riot-gear police and know that satellites are tracking their movements…

I’m outraged… but not because I’m now implicated as an extremist, but because this is clearly the work of partisan hacks being appointed to positions that affect the safety of this nation and its citizens.

This to me this is the politics of No Quarter.  The audacity that because you have the majority its time now to destroy the opposition.  Very Machiavallian, you know label the opposition before they label you…

Not exactly a smart move, unless as others have stated… they must think they’ll never lose another election.

So I decided to make my point this way… I’m revising just a few things to be more inclusive.  Sort of a Mad Lib if you will…

Anti-Semitic-Keynesian extremists attribute these losses to a deliberate conspiracy conducted by a cabal of Jewish “financial elites.” who donated generously to Chris Dodd and Barney Frank and relied heavily on the stupidity of Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi to get a bailout with bonuses in tact. These “accusatory” tactics are employed to draw new recruits into rightwing extremist groups such as the GOP, Libertarian, Constitution, and other possibly legitimate but outdated rhetorical political parties that don’t fit the mold of the “O” and further radicalize those already subscribing to extremist beliefs which we can not tolerate because its not “O” approved and may result in a failed re-election of “the one”. DHS/I&A assesses this trend is likely to accelerate if the economy is perceived to worsen. (This last line was meant to not look like we’re worried about losing the re-election, cause we know that’s impossible, but to get brownie points with “Master O”)

(U//FOUO) Over the past five years, various right leftwing extremists, including militias like code pink who really annoy all of us and white-collar intellectual supremacists, have adopted the immigration issue as a call to action, rallying point, and recruiting tool for votes through ACORN approved programs. Debates over appropriate immigration levels and enforcement policy generally fall within the realm of protected political speech under the First Amendment, but in some cases, anti-immigration or strident pro-enforcement fervor has been directed against specific groups such as illegal immigrants and has the potential to turn violent in the form of foaming/frothy mouth tirades about how America stole this country from Mexicans and Indians and we deserve to lose sovereignty anyway unless we can be governed by the “O”.

(U//FOUO) DHS/I&A will be working with its state and local partners over the next several months to ascertain with greater regional specificity the rise in rightwing extremist activity in the United States, with a particular emphasis on anyplace where 2 or 3 are not gathered in the name of Obama where these sort of people hang out in their compounds and talk about overthrowing the government and how to get grass and blood stains out of a table cloth during their tea parties, which are the political, economic, and social factors that drive rightwing extremist radicalization.

Maybe it will be the opportunity of conservatives someday to hack off the left arm of the country…  Maybe the idiots behind this assessment have only proven their analytical skills have been exhausted.  Maybe they actually mean what they said… but if I were a leftwing liberal democrat supporting Obama… then I might fear the consequences and retribution of losing a re-election.

Thanksgiving for a Country Under God!


A national tradition.

George Washington was our first president to observe a day of Thanksgiving at the urging of congress in 1789 as a Nation. Although it wasn’t the first time that he rallied the colonies to collective observance. In 1777 he issued General Orders as Commander in Chief of the Continental forces to observe a day of thankgiving.

Thanksgiving was not established as a national holiday tradition in 1789 as it was not regularly observed as a national holiday until Oct 3 1863 proclaimed to be on the 4th Thursday of November by President Abraham Lincoln. Although the day shifted a few times since 1863 it has been traditionally observed as a national holiday on the 4th Thursday of November ever since.

Presidents Adams, and Madison both declared a national day of thanksgiving during their administrations. Although Presidents Thomas Jefferson and John Quincy Adams did not declare national observances both citing concerns for state influence on how religious observances may differ in their thanksgiving traditions. Others might twist this and say they were concerned about violating separation from church and state by forcing the non-religious to observe a tradition of thanksgiving to deity. Clearly giving thanks to God is at the heart of this tradition.

Question about the use of Ms. vs. Mrs.


Have you noticed the mixed usage and wondered?

I have a co-worker that brought this up as a concern and I explained to them the origin of “Ms.” but while reading all the news out there on Ms./Mrs. Palin I noticed there has been a lot of references of both “Mrs. Palin” and “Ms. Palin” in the same articles.

So in reading I find many more “Ms.” references than “Mrs.” references…but often a mixture…
