My husband and I bought our home here about 4 years ago. It was a nice quiet neighborhood with working families much the same as us. At some point after our purchase the area became inundated with immigrants. I won’t say illegal because I wouldn’t presume to know if all of them are, although I suspect so of the vast majority. That in and of itself isn’t the worst part of this story. Yes, it is more crowded and noisy and not so neat but people adapt to that as long as they still have their own space; their own little “island.”
My “island” was invaded a few days ago. There was a shooting at a nearby gas station and the getaway car was found in my next door neighbor’s driveway with lights and blinkers still on. Now, not being a nosy neighbor, all I could tell the police was that, yes, I heard it arrive and yes, I heard a vehicle leave but there was no big commotion that would prompt me to look outside. The leaving and going are frequent from that house. The only reason I hear these things so easily is because the driveway is less than ten feet from the corner of my house which sits at an angle to it.
While the news reported it as a “possible robbery” such is quite likely not the case. The investigation right here on our street lasted from 4PM when the shooting took place until 4AM the next morning. During that time, my husband and I were questioned a few times, just in case we remembered or noticed anything more. However, there was little we could tell them and I apologized for that several times. During one of these question sessions, the investigator looked straight into my husband’s eyes and said, “Get a gun.”
He then proceeded to tell us that this was likely a retribution hit because the man killed was also a suspect in a shooting that took place two weeks previously at a Mexican restaurant. To top that off, I later found out that my daughter was at the scene of the crime with my 6 year old grandson in tow, who also saw the body and the other one who was injured. My daughter, being in the medical field, rendered assistance to the injured man and ascertained there was nothing to be done about the other one, then called 911 as I’m sure many others had done as well. Many of those involved don’t speak English and an interpreter had to be brought in but they haven’t cooperated with the police at all.
So, we have a probable retribution hit involving my next door neighbors who would see and recognize my daughter as well as us. We did not buy our house where we bought it to be the unwilling and unwitting targets of gangs and gang retribution but it’s where we are now. We didn’t pay what we paid for this house to be in this position. I’m sure no one does buy a home in such areas but the areas seem to find them in spite of that fact.
Unfortunately, we’re stuck here because of the depressed housing market that was caused by lending too much money to people who couldn’t afford it and who subsequently walked away from those houses. The value of ours has gone down as well because of these factors. We can’t sell and move to another location because we’ve been here only 4 years. And we shouldn’t have to.
How long before I can feel safe in my home again? Will I ever? What good will a gun do me if the next retribution hit takes place outside my house and bullets are flying through windows?
These are the things those of us forced into such situations have to deal with along with the depressed wages and taxes and why so many are against illegal immigration. It’s not racism or xenophobia or any other stupid nonsense given by the left and some on the right. It has to do with feeling safe and those of us on the receiving end don’t; not when your whole world can change at a moment’s notice because of people who have no respect for our laws and fear no retribution from them.

gc reco - This is a huge issue that needs venting

Great blog StephC and my prayers are with you and those similarly situated. We have a brazen illegal criminal problem in Charlotte as well.

StephC, it sounds like Vegas
Vegas_Rick Friday, September 12th at 10:57AM EDT (link)The negative social, economic and security issues associated with illegal immigration are not covered in the news. I suspect it’s because the media is a) in the tank on the issue, or b) they are afraid of being accused of racism.
But the problems caused by illegal immigration are huge and spreading. My prayers are with you. I fear these types of situations will get much worse, especially in the southwestern US, before it gets better.
“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘press on’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.” Calvin Coolidge.
Thank you, now I know I'm not alone
IndependentfrMI Friday, September 12th at 10:58AM EDT (link)When I moved back to the big city, it was to take back our communities, and it was cheaper and convient. I live in a high crime area and the influx of illegals is staggering.
I watch them get off charter buses from Texas every couple of days behind a Mexican market. My concerns were all the young men ages teens to early 30’s from several countries arriving here weekly.
With the economy so poor here in MI makes one wonder where are they working.
After observing my community for years finding where the illegals work and live, and finding where the gang activity is through crime and graffiti, I decided to call and contact my local FBI, ICE and police officials about my concerns.
Maybe the crackdown on employers and the requirement that you must be a legal resident to get a drivers license and state sponsored health care here in some way has slowed and influx. And just maybe the border control and passport requirements are making a difference. I don’t know for sure but the next crime statistics should show me more.
Thanks, GC
Steph C Friday, September 12th at 11:20AM EDT (link)And sorry to hear that. As I type this comment, there are four police cars outside. Some of them went into the house with wipes…for what I don’t know. But they are still looking for the main person involved in the crime and was showing us a picture of the suspect. Unfortunately, all I could tell them was that he looked familiar but resembled a couple of the guys I know live there. Not much help, am I? I suppose I must learn how to be a nosy neighbor from now on.

I believe it's helping to some extent.
Steph C Friday, September 12th at 11:26AM EDT (link)But the problem is more than a crackdown/deportation which seems to be all the government is willing to do. If one of us, as citizens of the country, were to do half what the illegals do we’d be in jail for life. But they get deported as punishment and just come back under another identity to do it all over again.
Illegal immigration is a terrorism all of its own but the government doesn’t get that because they don’t live where we live.

Government ears are tin

nivlem Monday, September 15th at 9:31PM EDT (link)This is no longer a government issue. It
is really going to take a grassroots effort to gain control of the situation and it is not going to be easy. There are several issues to be addressed. Government will not address them because
they will lose votes. Their hands are tied. We can either cry and complain about this reality, or start to change
the situation ourselves. Here is beginning list of the issues:
1.) Crime
2.) The birthrate and the draw on
our healthcare/medicare system
3.) Jobs that our citizens want
and will do.
4.) Lack of healthcare and the unwillingness to accept employer offered
healthcare
5.) Healthcare when they become ill and need longterm care and there are no
family members available in the US to
help.
6.) Economic costs due to theft of
personal identity.
7.) Automobile loses and personal injury.
8.) Uninsured workers comp. loses.
9.) Ease to escape Mexico to avoid
accepting responsiblity
10.) Millions of children born into
poverty as US citizens that will be a burden on our medicaid and educations and
college systems.
11.) I have traveled many areas of the
US where there is a true dependence on
the labor market. Without it, they cannot survive.
I love the Mexican people I have met. There are many other nationalities I have
not spent with. It causes me a great deal of concern that we have a wonderful group of people that could be
assests to our country with no way to
legally bring them into our country.
Our government officials are to involved
in politics to develop a successful
resolution. We need to develop this from
the bottom up in order to resolve this.
We must develop and implement solutions. There is enough intelligence within this community to reach this goal.
I have in-laws of Mexican descent
Steph C Tuesday, September 16th at 7:29AM EDT (link)that is, if you consider my in-laws spouses as in-laws, too. They don’t like illegal immigration any more than the rest of us because they are Americans first, of Mexican descent second. These people are ignored or called traitor when they voice their opinions.
It’s getting very tiresome always being bullied by people who swear to care about us. Words and actions…

Community actions
IndependentfrMI Tuesday, September 16th at 7:30AM EDT (link)The illegal residents of this state are angry at the prospect they can’t find jobs and have been told they don’t qualify for state sponsored healthcare. Most say they may have to go back to the agriculture industry to seasonaly pick produce.
Some of our representatives, Vern Elhers for one and a rep from the Mackinaw area not sure of name, are saying we need more workers visas because there are not enough workers to supply the hotel industry and some labor.
Wait a minute, I thought they were doing work Americans wouldn’t do. It used to be when you vacationed at Mackinaw there were nothing but college students working in shops, hotels, and on the island. Now it is hard to find anyone who speaks English.
Absolutely Steph. My step mother is
c17wife Tuesday, September 16th at 8:05AM EDT (link)of Mexican descent (100%). She despises illegal immigration as does her whole family. It is one of the few issues that she really gets fired up about. The other issue is abortion. She is very pro-life.
