We Can Make Socialism Work

Posted for Dave Hinz with permission

A little Digg love

“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism,’ they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.”

We consistently hear Conservative pundits, I know I have heard Rush Limbaugh say it over and over, that Socialism has failed everywhere it has been tried. While that has always been true in the past, I believe that at this particular time in history, in this country, Socialism might, for the first time succeed as a governing philosophy. Allow me to explain.

As long as the United States remains that “Shining City on the Hill” there will always be people willing to risk it all for freedom – willing to build boats out of crates, to weather those stormy seas, and try to float those 90 miles from Cuba, to freedom in this country.

As long as Liberty raises high that lighted flame, there will be those who will risk their lives illegally crossing multiple borders, to find a better life for themselves and their families, even at the risk of hiding in the shadows their entire lives. The poorest slums in this country little compare to the poverty the rest of the world experiences.

But once that flame is extinguished – once that city ceases to shine – once the United States becomes just one more “People’s Republic” indistinguishable from the utopias found all across the world – Socialism will have won, and the world can achieve true and lasting peace.

You see – once the United States renounces freedom, there is no place left in this world to go. We were the last best hope for the world. And with that hope gone, we can all learn to work for the greater good – the good for society over the good for the individual.

When once there was an “Iron Curtain” that separated the peoples of Europe – freedom and tyranny – the people denied that freedom fought bravely to achieve it. Thousands died braving the wire and stone of the Berlin Wall – vainly attempting to escape their Socialist utopia.

But once that curtain was lifted – once the barrier no longer stood between the free and the oppressed – the people of Europe voted themselves oppression – they embraced Socialism.

“From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs” has a seductive ring to those of minimal skills or education – those with greater need and lesser abilities. Interestingly enough it also is seductive to the academic elite – the Ivory Tower utopian dreamers – most of whom have never made a living in the difficult Capitalist world.

There is a story in the news this week that the federal government has indicted a couple, Kendall and Gwendolyn Myers of espionage – spying on the United States for the Cuban government. In his own words, Myers wrote:

“The abuses of our system, the lack of decent medical system, the oil companies and their undisguised indifference to public needs, the complacency about the poor, the utter inability of those who are oppressed to recognize their own condition.”

“Have the Cubans given up their personal freedom to get material security? Nothing I have seen yet suggests that. I can see nothing of value that has been lost by the revolution. The revolution has released enormous potential and liberated the Cuban spirit.”

It is clear to Mr Myers, as it should be to all, that the Cuban people have achieved the Utopian dream under the Castro regime in Cuba. There are no rich, there is no middle class, and by simple definition, since no other class distinction exists, there are no poor. In achieving sameness the Cuban people have demonstrated that Socialism works – as it can soon work in this country.

You see, the only discontent in Cuba is brought about because of the United States. Were the blessings of liberty – false blessings I might add – not so tantalizingly close, the people could set aside their dreams, and set about to bring about the blessings of Socialism.

The opposition to the Socialist Revolution in Venezuela – those few foolish enough to publicly stand up against Hugo Chavez in his quest to bring an equal prosperity to all of the people – is rooted in its embrace of freedom. The opposition looks toward the United States for support in thwarting the bonds of tyranny.

Once we have embraced that same Socialist tyranny, that opposition will fold, and the populace will learn to embrace the equality of outcome that Socialism promises to bring.

No false hope here, of equality of opportunity – what is opportunity after all to an illiterate day worker with no education – but the true equality of knowing that your neighbor can never surpass you in wealth and happiness.

And with this worldwide Socialism will come true egalitarianism among nations. Cuba will no longer be poor, while the United States remains rich. Canada will merge with Mexico into an equal state of prosperity.

And what of China, with its teeming masses of poor? That poor will no longer exist. Distinctions between rich and poor will become meaningless anachronisms of a bygone era.

It must be admitted, of course, that even with a worldwide People’s State, there will still of necessity by a few ruling elites. There must be leaders; else who would the people know to follow? And, of course, those leaders must not come from the people themselves, or else, the masses would still cling to a false hope of rising above their meager life station.

This is of little problem, however, as the ruling elites have pretty much already revealed themselves as such – and the people of this country have already spoken at the ballot box – demonstrating their willingness to place themselves into the hands of those elite.

Yes, we are well onto the way of achieving that Socialist Utopia that Norman Thomas spoke of in the quote that began this piece. It may have failed throughout the world before, but this time, we can make it work.

Viva la Revolucion.

Economic freedom, as experienced in China today, is indicative of the ‘shining city on a hill’. The planned economy of Obama and his camp followers will only lead to stagnation like we’ve seen in the past. He’s taking the worst of all worlds and implementing it. The socialized health care of Western Europe, the dictatorial spirit of Cuba, the nationalization of Chavez, the propaganda machine of Ortega, and the economic philosophy of FDR to anchor our economy in abuse, political corruption, and failure. He’s bound and determined to level the field which will lead to only his friends with prosperity. His rhetoric weaves dreams intermingled with stark, shrieking nightmares of capitalism.

    The guy truly despises success.

is that many people cannot believe it will ever happen here, or if it does, it will be “that bad.” It’s easy to take freedom for granted and complacency is obviously a human trait shared by all at some point.

I remember after 9/11 how people flocked to churches and synagogues (and to mosques, too, I guess, but for a different reason.) The general public was actually afraid that they might lose their lives. However, I wonder if they were afraid of losing their freedom? Probably not. I believe most people understand that the U.S. can thwart most violent threats, but are ignorant of the “boiling frog” scenario.

Then I wonder, how could this be? Are not a multitude of public voices shouting of the dangers of creeping socialism? Did it not become an issue during the last election? Didn’t the O reveal his true intentions to Joe the Plumber?

The answer is yes, it is known. So either people don’t believe it will be bad, or believe all the warnings are just hyper-political propaganda. For the former, I suspect many think socialism will be like a giant sized “Ophra Give Away” show, in which benevolent govt hands out new cars, new homes and the like. (Remember the famous soundbite from the O supporter who believed she would not have to buy gas or pay rent if The One got elected!) It is truly disturbing that some have such a infantile view of reality — but there it is.

As for the latter crowd, I can only guess they are idealogues who are so steeped in their own PR they have begun to believe it. Or, more frightening still, they believe they themselves will become part of the”ruling elite” mentioned in the diary. Unfortiunately, the ruling elite, by definition, must be a relatively small group of people.

So, where does that leave the rank and file liberal when the Anschluss does come? I guess they can be good party members, blockwatchers and executioners which seems to suit the personalities of many left wing idealogues. I mean really, have you ever met a liberal who isn’t insufferably smug or downright hostile? Not many I’ll wager. (Yes, I know there are a few.)

But the process is insidious. For instance, the teachers’ unions, through intermediaries of course, attack the First Amendment, because otherwise religious schools might receive aid from the federal govt and spread. And they present not only viable competition to govt schools, but are a huge embarrassment and biting testament to their total ineptitude. (Religious schools spend a fourth the money, but churn out twice or thrice the graduates.)

In turn, the JudeoChistian priciples on which our country was founded come under attack, which weakens the social fabric by removing moral authority, certitude and restraint. Since humans were designed to seek imutable truth and an metaphysical authority of some kind (heretofore represented by God and a set of moral standards,) the state moves in to fill the void they themselves have created. Since the federal govt has thus become so grotesquely engorged, the special interests (in this case teachers) petition the new state authority it for protection in the face of any attempt to reign in their excesses or address their failures.

And so it is throughout the economy, with every group banding together to form an interest group, especially with the O nationalizing everything in sight. I began to notice this a few years ago when I became involved in a number of professional and private associations. Either my professional organization was requesting money and support to petition some branch of governement for WHAT WE WANT, or my pilot’s association is begging money to keep the government from ruining general aviation w/user fees, or my sports club needs funds to fight off government’s attempt to restrict and eventually remove rights guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment, or…well, you get the point. One doesn’t simply join a club anymore, one becomes an advocate, tacit or otherwise, in one or another causes seeking some form of dispensation from the all powerful governemnt — a state of affairs sometimes known as socialism. Before long, federal governement is the ONLY authority and the only avenue of redress. Heaven help you if you come down on the “wrong” side when this happens. I hope I’m living in Antigua by that time.

There are those who don’t pay much attention to politics and they’re whistling in the dark. Although they can recount the horrors of tyranny (Stalin, Pol Pot, Hitler, etc.) they think that somehow the American people are too smart to fall for such dictatorship. They look at our power, wealth, and history and they think that somehow we’re immune.

There are others that truly believe that Marx had a great idea and that Lenin and Stalin just went about it the wrong way.

Which group is more dangerous, I don’t know.

This diary is such a beautifully composed example of what it must be like to think like a lotus eater that it creeps me out.

There will be no curiosity, no enjoyment of the process of life. All competing pleasures will be destroyed. But always? do not forget this, Winston? always there will be the intoxication of power, constantly increasing and constantly growing subtler. Always, at every moment, there will be the thrill of victory, the sensation of trampling on an enemy who is helpless.
If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face? forever.

As soon as the very first progressive income tax took effect and the first peice of bread was handed out by the government, America ceased being a capitalist nation.

I would say that there are no pure capitalist nations left in the world by that standard, save perhaps nations so destitute that they have no bread to hand out.

As a matter of fact, there are hardly any pure communist nations in the world either, since under pure communism there is no such thing as private property. Even in the most communistic states today, individuals are allowed to own certain personal belongings.

If communism is pure blue and capitalism is pure red, then all of us are just a socialist shade of purple. Sure, America has a more reddish purple tint and Europe is more bluish, but we are all purple nonetheless.

to avoid the obvious comparison between lib/progressive and socialist/commie.

we can turn that around. obviously lefties are blue, that means depressed, that means manic-depression, that means insane, that means frothing at the mouth loony, that means rubber rooms and lobotomies.

          yep, typical lefty.
