Obama: Liar, Tool, Or Just Inept? We Report. You Decide.

So, Barack Obama is irritated by that photo of him without his hand over his heart.
Obama said the photo was taken during the singing of the national anthem, not the pledge.
"My grandfather taught me how to say the Pledge of Allegiance when I was 2," Obama said, his annoyance obvious. "During the Pledge of Allegiance you put your hand over your heart. During the national anthem you sing."
Um, I'm sorry. I didn't grow up in this country. In fact, I didn't learn the pledge of allegiance until I was fifteen and moved back to his country.
But even I know, and have known since I was little growing up overseas, that you put your hand over your heart for the National Anthem.
Everybody knows. Or at least everyone should.

So what you're saying here is that, since even the President knows you're supposed to put your hand over your heart (or in this case, the middle of your lower rib cage, as if you have indigestion), everybody else must? That's pretty low regard for the President's knowledge.
Have fun mud-wrestling with your straw man.

... this is a pretty silly thing to get bent out of shape about. It is true that you're supposed to put your hand over your heart when the anthem is played (or else doff your hat if you have one). But let's be real here, who hasn't forgotten that from time to time? It's not as obvious an infraction as leaving your hat on during the anthem, or failing to place your hand over your heart during the pledge. The "hand on heart" gesture is a sign of fealty or allegiance, so it makes more sense to perform the gesture when you're verbally reciting the pledge than when you're just listening to the anthem.
Yes, I know Obama is a presidential candidate so he should be held to a higher standard. But as a candidate and senator he goes to these sorts of events hundreds of times a year. If he did it wrong every time someone should probably call him on it. But as far as I know this is the first time we've heard about this sort of gaffe from him. So let's try not to be petty.
Hang all traitors and secessionists! Hang them high!

Strange. Growing up in Iowa I learned the same as Obama, hand on heart for pledge, stand and face flag for anthem but no hand on heart unless you have to doff your cap, in which case place that over your heart.
Maybe I'm remembering minor league baseball games where I really only looked at the flag and the players, but my U.S. army veteran father never put his hand on his heart either. Still, to this day, I have looked around at baseball games at people with their hands on their hearts thinking they don't know what they're doing. But there's no refuting what the the USC says one "should" do.
Who knows how often this part of the Flag Code has been violated.
Bonus points to those who guess the acronym.
Same thing here growing up in Indiana. Maybe it's a midwest thing?
I'm from Washington State, and I've done the same thing too. Also, my Grandfather, who was a WW2 war hero, flew 25 bombing missions over Germany and then spent 2 years as a POW after his plane was shot down, always did the same thing as well.

which is not exactly the most patriotic region, more populist than anythng else. But what makes the picture is the other three left wingers with their hands on their hearts.
Molon Labe!
But, questioning the patriotism of the citizens of the midwest is rather asinine.
Uhh, I don't know about any code, and I hate to defend Obama, but where I'm from, we do exactly the same thing, and have ever since I was a baby. You put your hand over your heart for the pledge, and stand at attention and sing during the national anthem.
I'm not sure if they've done things differently in some places, but that's what I've learned ever since I was a kid. I wouldn't have even thought to question it if I hadn't seen this blog.

As a military man what I remember being taught was that when in uniform stand at attention (and do NOT put hand over heart), and when in civies do the hand over heart for both.
But IIRC, Gomer was standing with his hands together.
All things considered, I don't think of this as any kind of major gaffe -- too many variables, might have been at the very beginning or end of the pledge, maybe he just honestly had his brain somewhere else at the time.
All of which does not make him NOT an idiot.

from Kansas and they raised him. So it makes sense if it is a midwest thing that is what he was taught. At ball games I see people do both. I usually put my hand over my heart, but most people don't. They just stand at attention.
And it's common practice to put your hand over your heart during the anthem and sing.
Obama wasn't exactly standing at attention either....
Socialism doesn't work. It looks nice on paper, but it's been tried and it's failed miserably every time (usually accompanied by widespread death and suffering).
