A Parable for the Huffington Post.

Once upon a time - or so Spider Robinson assures us - there was a man who worked in the sewers. In fact, he worked in the sewers for his entire adult life, up to the day that he retired.

About two months later, the other tenants at his apartment started to notice the most God-awful stink coming from the man's apartment. Over the weekend, the stink grew worse and worse; until they feared the worst. So they finally got the landlord to open the door - only to find the man perfectly fine. The smell? The smell had come from several pails of human ordure that had been carefully placed around the room.

When asked why he had done such a thing, the man shrugged and simply stated that after forty years in the sewers, the smell had gotten good to him.

The moral?

There's no point trying to hide it, HuffPo. We know it's gotten good to you.

And thinking while I am writing this I may be opening myself up to some good natured japes ;-)

They are going farther over at Huffpo, ironic how the left embraces the techniques of engsoc.(not really) But unless a site embraces a fixed history no deletions, no alterations policy how can anything else be expected ?

That practice is reserved for those who flagrantly violate posting rules - particulary through use of excessive profanity or hateful speech (along the lines of what HuffPo had up earlier today).

The major difference here is that we (a) deal with each of those cases individually, and (b) ban each offender.

We don't just decide that something has gotten out of hand 473 comments later, and try to sweep the whole thing under the rug.

To be fair... by Moe Lane

...we don't like excessive profanity and/or hateful speech. :)

But, yeah, we're not ashamed of our readers. Unlike, say, Huffpo.

The Fuzzy Puppy of the VRWC.

precisely what they've done. Case in point - here.

I cannot say I recall a case whereby a comment/diary/blog was altered (up to and including erasure) on this site and the editor didn't fess-up to it out in the open. And making things look like they never, ever happened in the first place just doesn't happen here.

The situations just aren't the same.

So libs, how's that Congressional Resolution to end The War™ coming along?

Record. There have been instances were entire discussions have been eliminated. The ones I have seen have been pretty much out of bounds material. (maligning the armed forces, threatening material to the president was one) Certainly the people that use a script to endlessly post, need those posts eradicated.

I've seen comments/blogs annotated by a moderator, with all of the offending stuff removed, always with a moderator's comment. But I've never seen a post/blog removed by the moderators - and I asked to have a couple of comments removed from one of my blogs a while back.

Congressmen who willfully take actions during wartime that damage morale and undermine the military are saboteurs and should be arrested, exiled, or hanged.

And they deserved to be.

... and even entire diaries.

But they were troll droppings ... so I'm not too broken up about it.

I've resolved not to do it anymore.

This was priceless. I'm going to use this one (with citation) someday in the future.

Shades of 1984 by civil truth

Evidently the HuffPo realized that their comments section had gone beyond the pale and were ashamed for the world to see it. Integrity would have led to them explaining what and why they acted to remove the comment section.

Instead they decided to rewrite history, and declare that Oceania had always been at war with Eurasia. That leaves their motives open to attack.

Or just afraid of possible blowback? Not that HuffPo has street or other creds, but they probably are delusional enough to believe there is some dignity left at that self-parodying cesspool that could be lost.

Man Dies by OregonGuy

OregonGuy

Man dies. Goes to heaven. Sees two signs.

One sign says, "If your wife controlled what you did, stand here."

Second sign says, "If your wife didn't control what you did, stand here."

Dead man sees both signs. Behind the first sign is a line ten miles long. Behind the second sign is one guy.

Dead man walks up to lone guy standing in front of second sign. He asks, "Why are you here?"

In reply, hears, "I dunno, this is where my wife told me to stand."

More here.

The reporting of Big Brother's Order for the Day in the Times of December 3rd 1983 is extremely unsatisfactory and makes references to nonexistent persons. Rewrite it in full and submit your draft to higher authority before filing.
