Charlton Heston Passes Away

A great actor and a believer in inalienable rights

Here's my Charlton Heston story.

When I was a teenager, and a lowly intern for Human Events, I spent my days writing about all sorts of topics that were, let's face it, not interesting enough to the editors to assign real, paid journalists.

Once, I wrote an article about gun rights, and an attack on them via a bill before the House of Representatives. It was a slightly different attack than those usually employed by the gun-grabbers, as I recall, but the details are lost to me. In any case: I went to a few hearings, I talked to a few staffers, and I wrote about it.

About a week after the story ran, I came back to my desk to find a pink "While you were out" note from the office secretary. Someone from then-National Rifle Association President Charlton Heston's office had called, the note said, asking for copies of my article. Please return call for address.

I dialed the number. A man picked up. And I heard Charlton Heston say, "Hello?"

I was stunned into silence for a moment. I glanced at the note - it was a California area code. I realized it did not say Charlton Heston's office had called - that had been assumed. No, it was the man himself. I had no idea what to say.

"Uh...Mr. Heston, I'm calling from Human Events, and I heard you were interested in copies of my article?"

"Oh, yes!" he replied. Could I send a few copies of the issue over to him, he asked? But of course. He gave me his address, ending with, "and that most hideous of zip codes, 9-0-2-1-0."

I still didn't know what to say, but figuring this was the only time I'd end up with the actor on the phone, I just added: "And sir, let me say as a fan, thank you so much for all the amazing work you've done on screen."

He laughed, and said "No, thank you, I appreciate it."

Made my week, that did.

R.I.P.

"Hey, I call 'em like I see 'em. I'm a whale biologist."

The only thing you will hear from the LSM is that he was head of the dreaded NRA.

You will find hardly a mention that he walked with MLK before it was stylish.

Sympathy goes out to his family.

of work he has left behind.

In addition to the movies, I would add his wonderful autobiography and his TV series on the Bible.

May he rest in peace. And wouldn't you love to be in the room when he meets the real Pharaoh? Let alone Moses!

We have lost so many in recent years. First Reagan, although like Heston Alzheimer's had robbed us of him some time earlier.
Milton Friedman, William Buckley.

The modern celebrities are activists as well, but not for unpopular causes, they are fad followers and band wagon jumpers.

Heston was a fighter for civil rights before it became chic.
He was a proponent for the second amendment when all of holly wood was for gun grabbing.

The modern day Cloonys, and Costners just do not pass the smell test. They are not real men like Ronald Reagan and Charlton Heston.

saddened by the news but relieved for him and for his family that he would no longer have to suffer. No doubt he is happy to be home at last.

It was an eye-roller to hear how his political activity over the years was described by the local CBS affiliate. "Mr. Heston was active in the Civil Rights movement, but in later years worked for conservative causes." That one came complete with the obligatory "from my cold dead hand" film clip.

Charlton Heston, like John Wayne, was a man blessed by fortune who gave back in full measure. Both are irreplaceable. It was Charlton Heston's portrayal of Andrew Jackson that made me read more about Old Hickory, and the movie "El Cid" was one of my favorites. Never was there a man more suited to portraying heroes!

or lack thereof,

"Mr. Heston was active in the Civil Rights movement, but in later years worked for conservative causes."

So in liberalspeak fighting for some constitutional rights is civil rights, and fighting for other constitutional rights is wacky right wing advocacy.

received wisdom that Republicans/conservatives are racist gun-nuts. We have really GOT to do something to get the truth out about who we really are and have been for quite some time.
