Democrats Begin Hitting Fred Thompson

Well, it was bound to happen. The Democrats have unleashed their goons against Fred Thompson. And guess what they are highlighting?!

Yes, Fred Thompson played a racist on television back in the 1980's and . . . wait for it . . . Fred dated a lot when he was single -- during the Clinton administration. Ooohhhhhhh! How dare he. I mean, during that time, anybody who was anybody was putting cigars in places cigars aren't suppose to go while with White House interns!

Of course the most telling one is that the Democrats take serious issue with this statement by Fred:

Mexican leaders apparently have an economic policy based on exporting their own citizens, while complaining about US immigration policies that are far less exclusionary than their own. The French jail perfectly nice people for politically incorrect comments, but scold us for holding terrorists at Guantanamo.
Russia, though, takes the cake. Here is a government apparently run by ex-KGB agents who have no problem blackmailing whole countries by turning the crank on their oil pipelines. They're not doing anything shady, they say. They can’t help it if their opponents are so notoriously accident-prone. Criticize these guys and you might accidentally drink a cup of tea laced with a few million dollars worth of deadly, and extremely rare, radioactive poison. Oppose the Russian leadership, and you could trip and fall off a tall building or stumble into the path of a bullet."

That the Democrats don't like that should tell you everything you wanted to know about why they shouldn't be in the White House.

TV Producer Stephen Cannel told the LA Times if the racism attack "is all they can find to say about him, then they've hit a new low." I guess it's official then -- the Dems have hit a new low.

I wish Fred! had been by sofa king right

that forceful last week in Orange County.

Thompson gets it by perico

They have unleashed the beasts. The dnc site is a complete joke. They don't even have the real beef on any of our candidates. They just through out rumors and hope they stick. Of course foreign policy scares them, because they don't understand it. Thompson and McCain (though McCain I'm not positvive on) are the only candidates we have that have the experience to deal with the GWOT head on, with any understanding about the way it works. Have any of you read Thompson's report on the fiscal crisis that was facing the nation just before President Bush took office? He nails it!

This is definitely standard operating procedure for the press. Whenever they ask a question that starts with "There are those who say that...", it means they found some nutcase who dreamed up some wild claim on DK or FDL or DU or the like. The claim is assumed to be true unless the subject can prove beyond all doubt that it is false, which is of course impossible.

Response:
"And there are those who say they've been abducted by aliens but respectable (emphasis on "respectable") journalists don't spend their time reporting what they say."

"It's a book about a man who doesn't know he's about to die, and then dies...
...But if the man does know he's going to die and dies anyway. Dies, dies willing, knowing he can stop it, then...
Well, isn't that the type of man you want to keep alive?"

Thompson Not Impressing by swamp_yankee

If Thompson wants to jump in the race, he going to start taking hits from all sides and learning to fight back. Novak, whom I'm respect, has another point of view on Thompson's performance. He writes that Thompson did not impress. http://www.suntimes.com/news/novak/373628,CST-EDT-novak07.article

will be split even more and Rudy will win I also hope Gingrich gets in too.

Pat at least seemed to be having fun on the show while Bob always came across as a guy who just finished a pitcher of unsweetened lemon juice. This article is no different. I use to have a higher tolerance for it, but then Bob's also one of the people who could have short-circuited the 'Lynch Libby Now!' crowd and didn't.

I always like them both. by swamp_yankee

I always like them both. They are both journalists before they are pundits. Too often, many conservative pundits just regurgitate Republican talking points. Novak writes with some insight and integrity. He's not going to post hit pieces on Thompson for the heck of it. I'm not against Fred, but this really is turning into www.fredstate.com. Thompson has a reputation for being somewhat lazy and droll. This teaser routine isnt helping. He can win my vote, but he still has to earn it. I'm tired of this white knight in shining armor routine. We saw it first with Rudy and now with Fred. The MSM and the Clintonistas and the Koskids will show no mercy on our nominee. He's going to have to actively campaign and fight at some point.

ditto by Dwight Baker

Exactly. I put the same on my blog. When the dems make Obama their favorite son for not having done anything other than give a good speech at the 2004 DNC convention, I figured that would be enough to do him in. By the time the election comes around the public will have been so saturated with him they'll tire of him. Same with Freddo. He looks great now and maybe doing a very smart thing in not formally being in the race but we're practically coronating him already.

friday night on HBO he had Sean Penn, Gary Shandling , and Harold Ford Jr. on his panel. Tommy Thompson was also interviewed by himself earlier in the show he dissed Bush on the tainted food issue.

I don't think Bob Novak is any serious kind of conservative -- influential and credentialed, certainly. But more along the lines of George Will at NYT, and the whole gang at Weekly Standard -- just squishy-cons.

If Novak is not impressed with a particular candidate, it matters not to me.

But you are certainly right, Fred is going to take some hits from all sides. I for one do not mind alot of conservative scrutiny directed at him. If he's the real deal, he will pass the Red State smell test. If not, then he belongs in the pack with the other 10 candidates.

It's war -- so when can we start shooting back at the enemy Democrats?

Basically they said we "fawn over any third-rate actor who will give them the time of day" and they we would "crawl all over the guy who played the body on last week's CSI if he'd only mouth the phrase 'pro-life."

Typical liberal BS. All name calling, no substance. They can't debate policy (and certainly not ideas) so they have to attack the messenger.

They slander the Secretary of State while they are at it, calling her "work-wife Rice." Could you imagine if Rush had said that about Pelosi??

Evil prevails only when good men do nothing.

They might be swinging at him, but they certainly aren't "hitting" Fred.

... and just imagine how aghast the democrats will be when Fred says what he thinks about THEM!

(oh please God... please, please pleeeease!)

"Even when you fall on your face, you're still moving forward."

Fred Thompson should make a clear statement on where he stands regarding a new path to citizenship for those here illegally. It would be better to do nothing at all about immigration than to provide this new "path." Too many politicians and people in the media keep providing the same false choice: either deport the illegals or give them a new "path to citizenship." It is quite regrettable that the only candidates who are unequivocally opposed to a new "path" have no chance of winning. If Fred Thompson doesn't set himself apart on this issue then frankly I don't care if gets in the race.

Can you believe that? by Mason Conservative

Whats hilarious is the comments on that blog. This is the best:

"What is THIS? Am I on the official Democratic Party website? Who's monitoring what goes up on it?"

Hilarious.

Yeah, and I really liked how they discussed the possible uses that left-wing groups like ... well, themselves could make of "video history."

But in the age of YouTube, this performance could raise an intriguing political question: How does a performer eyeing a presidential run deal with a video history that can be downloaded, taken out of context, chopped into embarrassing pieces and then distributed endlessly though cyberspace? Some conservative political blogs are already considering the problem.

Nooo ... you don't suppose somebody's already cutting and chopping old Thompson videos right now, do you?

A precedent embalms a principle.

they can just create CGI snippets of all the GOP candidates saying whatever the Dems feel like they should be caught saying. It's merely the high-tech version of what Dan Rather did.

Whats an added interest in Thompson by Mason Conservative

is perhaps he could nullify Hollywood to an extent. Many of the big name liberals out there know him and like him - guys like Robert De Niro (Cape Fear) Tom Cruise (Days of Thunder) and even Sam Waterston (L&O) all worked with him. I don't know their personal feelings of Fred, but the fact that they know him may snuff out some of the more outrageous Hollywood stuff that W had to deal with.

I found this interesting article in the usually liberal newspaper The Tennessean:

"The resurgence of Fred the Lazy occurred April 1. David Corn, of the liberal Nation magazine, said on a radio talk show that he had talked to people close to Thompson and "they say he's a little too lazy to run."

Once planted, the phrase has been repeated over and over, especially on blogs."

"I never saw the guy slacking off," said Norm Ornstein, a scholar with the American Enterprise Institute think tank.

Sen. Susan Collins of Maine said such a label "is a misread of him."

"He is not a person who lets others see the amount of work he puts into something. He projects this relaxed, easygoing, down-home demeanor."

Thompson by acrosoc101

Thompson recently gave a speech that hinted at his endorsement of legalized citizenship for illegals. This is enough for me to dislike him. He will only distract from Romney's campaign that has been consistent with a hardline approach, and who is winning New Hampshire right now.

The primary is 9 months or more away, depending on the state.

is the fact that in a general election he has no chance. To get the attention of a large number of voters you need a name and or charisma. Do you think Obama would have any chance if he wasn't good looking and a great speaker? Hell no! Fred Thompson might work if the Dems only had Hillary, but I seriously think Obama is gonna win the nomination and if you put them side by side, Thompson will come off as a grumpy old man. Giuliani on the other hand can beat Obama simply because he has the 9/11 trump card. Not to mention he has the most charm and speaking skills in our party right now. Anyways, I see this election in pretty black and white terms. Giuliani is the only Republican that can beat Hillary or Obama right now. So even if you disagree with Rudy on some things, it's better than getting Obama for four years.

Rudy "has the most charm and speaking skills in our party right now" Did you watch the debate? For the life of me, I don't know where this assumption comes from. Thompson has infinately more charm than Rudy and Romney is by far and away the best speaker of the group.

there is no way he can win the primary. He has the war on terror going for him and that's it. The negatives, particularly with Republicans, is pretty staggering: gun control, abortion, gay rights, global warming, kinda maybe squishy on taxes. His married lives has been pretty ugly, too.

This just ain't gonna fly with Republicans. I don't think it will fly with the general public, either.

If I read your post right, you saying that Giuliani has some free pass because of 9/11. I don't think 9/11 helps either side, anymore.

So by Michael Wilt

it is better to live on your knees than to die on your feet, you are saying? No thanks.

I reject the notion that only liberal Republicanism can win the general election. This is a fantasy implanted by the media into the minds of Republican voters in order to divide the party for the sole purpose of either alienating the religious conservatives when we do nominate Giuliani, or demoralizing all of us regardless of who we nominate.

The Democrats will nominate Clinton, and frankly, all we need to beat her is a solid conservative who can effectively communicate our tested and true beliefs to the American people. Every election we have to go through this and re-explain to the people why liberalism in the model of Hillary Clinton does not work. The question is - will we nominate someone who can do this?

I might agree with you.
However, "live on your knees or die on your feet" is not the choice. And the choice may very well end up being "live on your knees or crawl on your belly to the Madrassa." I'll take "live on your knees" given that choice anyday. I'll take Giuliani over ANY Dem candidate if that's the choice.

In the meantime, however, I will continue to hope that a better choice enters the race. As of now, there is no better choice.

You know. . . by theBlur

Same thing was said about Ronald Regan in 1980. Just an actor, no chance. No substance. All an act.

Well, sorry, the more I hear from Fred Thompson the more I like him. Rudy is my choice right now, as he is running, but if Fred jumps in, my allegiance changes.

Am I the only one by CroakerNorge

that remembers that they called Reagan lazy, too? Taking all those naps, leaving the hard stuff to the staff, all that kinda thing?

and no, you're not the only one who remembers.

And I'd wager that like me (and despite their eulogies after his funeral) you haven't forgotten all the nasty, hateful things theys said about him either.

For me, preferences currently are Fred if he runs, Romney if Fred doesn't.

CroakerNorge by froghat

First of all, I think there are alot of Republicans who are more concerned with terrorism and taxes rather than abortion and gay issues at the moment. Obama scares me. His answer on "what would you do if 2 of our cities were attacked"? was downright pathetic. It made John Kerry sound like a hawk. Not to mention the guy is a socialist that wants to turn us into another France. This is why Rudy leads all these Republican polls by a huge margin. Fred Thompson cut into that lead a few weeks ago when he started getting a lot of hype thrown in his direction. Unlike Obama though, he failed to capitalize on that by making his case. So I expect over the next few months to see his numbers go down again. I've noticed alot of the harcore social issue Republicans are desperately trying to find someone before accepting that Rudy is the best we have right now. This is why I don't take anyone seriously when they start comparing Thompson to Reagan. Sorry, no one in our party is Reagan. Lets review who we have

Mitt Romney - I refer to this guy as the "phony" now. He reminds me of a stock broker who will do anything or say anything to get you to buy his stock. The hair style doesn't help that image either

John McCain - He's too interested in pleasing everybody, even if it means stabbing his party in the back. Not to mention, every once in a while he makes ridiculas comments like.. "I will follow him to the gates of hell."

... and, unfortunately, yours and mine.

With malice towards none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see right.

As Fred Thompson gets himself into the spotlight for a potential white house run, one thing is clear. Both republican and democrat candidates are becomming afraid of a Thompson candidacy.

Starting with an NBC news hit peace on Thompson saturday night, followed by some republican operatives from opposing campaigns, its obvious they fear that Thompson could be the 800 pound gorilla in the race. And they might be correct in their fears.

Thompson's speech at the Lincoln club showed a man who can win the hearts and minds of conservative voters without offending independents.

Fred Thompson by Kerosene24

I am not going to compare Fred to Ronald. Because Ronald Reagan is Ronald Reagan, Fred Thompson is Fred Thompson. That is 2 different things. Anyway, I do hope that Fred is running for Repulicians. He is so far best of all we have right now. 10 GOP right now seems like as if they are running for Vice President than President. If Fred decide not to run, I might go with Rudy, but I really hope that Fred DO run.
