Giuliani Fundraiser Disappoints

Rudolph Giuliani launched his presidential money hunt Monday night in Manhattan.

Giuliani's campaign refused to say how much the $2,100-a-ticket cocktail party at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square was expected to generate, but attendees said the event appeared to fall short of the 500 tickets needed to raise $1 million. According to Newsday, several Republicans said $1 million would have been a realistic goal for Giuliani's fundraiser.

Fellow presidential wannabe, John McCain, upstaged Giuliani's fundraising event by announcing a 57-member New York finance committee that includes Jets owner Woody Johnson; billionaire financier Henry Kravis; and Henry Kissinger.

That's right, Henry Kissinger.

Wha??? by Renegade Republican85

Kissinger?

McCain?

Now I didn't see that coming? I'm kinda puzzled by that.

Unless I'm just missing something.

they're behind everything :-)

They and the Colonel with his addictive Chicken recipe.

:-)

"I gag at the thought."

Actually this is entirely expected as it proves what McCain is, now he's simply negoitating the price.

between phone surveys and $2,100 vittles. i suspect it will be over for Giuliani before it really starts.

I don't know by jsteele

I'd want to see how he does among the $25-$100 donors before I write him off. Although I suspect that not being able to hit the goal in his own back yard is making the team nervous.

another city probably would have had better results. congratulations, by the way.

I saw a headline somewhere noting that he had raised $600,000 with the headline: Is Guiliani the Republicans best hope?

I didn't read the article, but I assumed this was a "Yes, he is," type of response to the fundraiser not an "only 600K" response. If they meant it the other way, then they need a new headline writer.

was along the lines of $800K and they seemed to be touting it as a huge success.

$6,300 a success. he couldn't sell 500 tickets to the Marquis in Manhattan.

I have no idea whats good or bad here ?

It's not a perfect Apples v. Apples comparison, because Warner was raising money for his personal PAC, and Giuliani was raising money for an account that could be transfered to his eventual campaign. Still, it shows that Rudy clearly doesn't too have many chits waiting to be cashed in.

New York donors are smart. They aren't rabid policy wonks who just love Giuliani's record. They want to give money to the winner. And it is increasingly clear that man will be John McCain.

New Yorkers have no principles they wish to donate to support? Come on... I find your generalization implausible.
