Jennifer Rubin notes the significant amount of nervous tension that has followed one bad debate performance on the part of Barack Obama, rightly pointing out that when Obama's eloquence and charisma fail to deliver, he really doesn't have all that much to fall back on. Of course, none of this changes the delegate math or the fact that Hillary Clinton is going to have to draw inside straight after inside straight to have any hope whatsoever of turning things around (and it is an open question as to whether or not all hope is indeed gone for her).
But I suppose that we have yet another explanation as to why Clinton remains in the race. Even now, after fifteen months of campaigning, too many things happen that seem to show that Obama may not be able to take a punch in the general election. The only reason that he is standing up against Clinton is because of the delegate math and the general sense that Clinton herself has run an awful campaign. But things will be different against John McCain, who is significantly more respected and whose campaign will be much sharper than Clinton's ever was. Against McCain, missteps by Obama may actually lead to a serious loss of support. And even the most minute loss of support in what will likely be a close election will be tremendously costly.
We have seen before that Hillary Clinton genuinely believes Barack Obama cannot win the general election. In her own mind at least, events keep proving her right. No wonder she seems bound and determined to take her campaign to the convention.

Until recently, I would have laid 100% that if Obama was the nominee up against McCain that there would be no way that McCain could win.
Thank you and everyone else for presenting the materials that the MSM again fails to present because of their love affair with the Democrat party.
I now feel that unless McCain drops dead, or picks Jeb Bush (who I do support) as VP, he can;t lose.

If Obama had to field these kinds of tough questions early in the campaign, he would have faded and Hillary would be on track to clinch the nomination now.
The MSM has been in the tank for Obama so much that they don't even try to deny it anymore when anyone points it out.
Having said that, let's not forget that McCain goes into this campaign with some very real strategic weaknesses. Chief among those are the general unpopularity of the GOP brand right now due to Bush and the Iraq War; the fact that McCain has no control over the war (who knows if terrorists will try something the week before the election like they did in Spain); and Obama's massive support among young voters.
And I have a sneaking suspicion that after the conventions are concluded, the MSM will be back to being on Obama's side again.
It's going to be a long, tough, grueling campaign, and it's still anybody's guess at this point how it will sort itself out.

Thank you for your always solid commentary.
I don't quite see how you can conclude that McCain's campaign in the general election will be so effective:
"But things will be different against John McCain, who is significantly more respected and whose campaign will be much sharper than Clinton's ever was."
I haven't seen evidence of any special campaign skill from McCain. He really was selected as the least-objectionable nominee. Why do you foresee that his campaign be that much improved for the general election?
