Newt: A Clarification

Last week, Newt Gingrich referred to Spanish as a "ghetto" language. What he meant was that, in order to get ahead in this country, English is necessary and a lack of English will hinder any immigrant's progress.
He recognizes that this was a poor choice of words and has reached out to the Spanish speaking community to clarify what he meant. YouTube has it:
For English, go here.

It would appear that Newt and McCain are neck and neck in the "dumbest things you can possibly say" contest.
And neither one will ever be president.
Nonetheless it IS true: If you can't speak English in this country you've pretty much restricted yourself to the ghetto, or at least, to wherever you can find others who understand whatever language you CAN speak.

A bunch of people assumed he was talking about Spanish in particular (probably because Spanish is the most widely spoken non-English language in this country and there are, as a result, more bilingual education classes concerned with Spanish than any other kind of bilingual classes.... though Spanish is certainly not the only bilingual education taught here) , and accused him of insulting Spanish. Newt, however, never used the word "Spanish", and when asked specifically to clarify what he meant on H & C, he said he was speaking of any language other than English, and referenced the term 'ghetto' to refer to any enclave of non-English speaking peoples, and spoke of the term's roots in reference to Jewish enclaves.... not Spanish.
WHAT HE SAID:
"The American people believe English should be the official language of the government. ... We should replace bilingual education with immersion in English so people learn the common language of the country and they learn the language of prosperity, not the language of living in a ghetto," Gingrich said to cheers from the crowd of more than 100.

It is a leap to victimhhood to say Newt was referring to Spanish as a ghetto language. A leap all too many people are ready to take. It has now been repeated so many times (including by the no-doubt-well-meaning Erick, that it is just taken as fact. Didn't happen. No insult intended.
Although Gingrich said, ""Citizenship requires passing a test on American history in English. If that's true, then we do not have to create ballots in any language except English," he said."
people are allowed to take the american citizenship spanish or any other language if they have been living in the US legally for 15 years or more and are over 55 years of age.
a non-English ballot.

......forces the brain to process information in a common way, forcing a 'de facto' unification of a population.
My mother, upon showing up, freshly scrubbed and neatly dressed, for her first day of school was told to return home and not darken their door again until she learned English. She did what she was told to do, as did so many other American children at that time. In spite of this rocky start in our system of public education, she and millions of other Americans developed the common sense to know that 'politics stopped at the water's edge', the tenacity and strength to survive the 'Great Depression' and save Western Civilzation and Democracy by stubbornly fighting the Second World War until they achieved the 'ultimate victory'.
Multilingual multiculturalism is a farce. The Biblical story of the 'Tower of Babel' should be stark warning of the fate awaiting nations whose populations cannot communicate with each other on a basic level, swiftly and easily and effectively.
A graphic demonstration of the superb effectiveness of a nation unified by a common language and purpose was the extreme difficulty in defeating the German people in WWII. No nation had a population more ethnically similar than Germany, and it took the combined all out efforts of England, the Soviet Union, Canada, the United States, and various others to bring Germany to its knees, with victory by no means certain in the conflict until the final days.
If you seek to create a banana republic, there is no surer means to do so than to have the entire population, within geopgraphic boundaries, speaking a multitude of languages.
