Facts About My Cancer
By Fred Thompson Posted in 2008 | Fred Thompson — Comments (51) / Email this page » / Leave a comment »
We have all seen the courageous battle that Elizabeth and John Edwards are fighting, and there are so many others. Fortunately, there are an increasing number of good stories because of the medical advances that have been made. I have friends in politics, some in Congress, some running for President, and others who have successfully dealt with cancer. It is certainly no respecter of persons and totally non-partisan. That point was driven home to me about 2 1/2 years ago when, shortly after a routine physical, I was diagnosed with what the doctors call an indolent lymphoma. Of the 30-plus kinds of lymphoma this is a "good" kind, if there is such a thing.
I have had no illness from it, or even any symptoms. My life expectancy should not be affected. I am in remission, and it is very treatable with drugs if treatment is needed in the future--and with no debilitating side effects.
I am one of the lucky ones. There are many lucky ones today. And for all of our diversity, we share one thing in common--a deep appreciation for the fact that we live in the United States of America and have the best medicine and the best doctors the world has even known.

In 2004, Senator Thompson was diagnosed with a form of lymphoma. Today, he is in remission from this, slow-growing disease. Doctors cannot currently detect the lymphoma by physical examinations or scans. Here are the facts:
WHAT IS IT?
Senator Thompson has an indolent form of lymphoma, one of more than 30 types of lymphoma.
Some lymphomas are very aggressive, but people with slow-growing types, like Senator Thompson's, often dying from natural causes associated with old age, rather than from the disease.
Using a standard prognostic scoring system Senator Thompson has a favorable prognosis.
Senator Thompson has never been physically ill or had any symptoms from his lymphoma or had any side effects from the therapy.
TREATMENT
One treatment option for this type of lymphoma is simply to watch and wait.
There are also new therapies, if and when treatment is indicated, which prolong survival compared to treatments used just 5 years ago.
Senator Thompson chose to receive such therapy (Rituxan), but he is no longer in treatment as he is in remission.

Because I am backing Rudy, I hope that the Senator decides to relax, take care of his young kids and enjoy being healthy. Who needs the hassle of running a two year daily campaign for President? :)

It was reported today that Fred Thompson has said that he has Indolent Non Hodgkins Lympnoma which is a very treatable chronic form of cancer. Here's a link to the story:

"I have had no illness from it, or even any symptoms. My life expectancy should not be affected. I am in remission, and it is very treatable with drugs if treatment is needed in the future — and with no debilitating side effects," Thompson said.
It's important to note that Fred was diagnosed 2 1/2 years ago and has been working, speaking and sheparding Chief Justice of the Supreme Court nominees through confirmation hearings throughout that time.
After reading this, I researched the diagnosis and prognosis at WedMD and have found tremendous encouragement in the managability of this form of lymphoma.

Follicular lymphoma comprises 20% of all non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas and as many as 70% of the indolent lymphomas reported in American and European clinical trials.[7,8,11] Most patients with follicular lymphoma are 50 years and older and present with widespread disease at diagnosis. Nodal involvement is most common and is often accompanied by splenic and bone marrow disease. Rearrangement of the bcl-2 gene is present in more than 90% of patients with follicular lymphoma; overexpression of the bcl-2 protein is associated with the inability to eradicate the lymphoma by inhibiting apoptosis.[12]

It's good that, in spite of this medical issue, that you remain in excellent spirits and that things seem to be going particularly well, all things considered. I will be praying for a continued, swift, and full recovery for you, and best of luck in whatever paths life takes you.

Sen. Thompson. You are also one of the few possible conservative candidates I am really excited about. I wish for your continued strength and health!
Also please run for President sir.

Senator Thompson,
Thank you for your thoughtful disclosure. We all wish you the best health and since it seems you are doing just fine, this is good news. Just let us know as soon as possible whether you're going to run for president - there are a lot of excited people across this country who want to get on board the back of the red pickup!
last Novemember and was only given 6 months to live her Cancer She has responded well to chemotherapy and now they say that she will like longer. I will pray for you Senator Thompson you are a great man. I know that my mother will be inspired by your courage.

Dear Senator Thompson,
Thank you for your post. I am praying for you to remain in remission and continue to be healthy.
I've read some of your articles and have listened to you sub for Paul Harvey and admire your forthrightness. I do hope you run for president!
Thank you for sharing the excellent news that your cancer is in remission, that you had no symptoms or illness, and that should further treatment be needed you will not suffer debilitating side effects. I think that's really all we need to know. I'm ready to volunteer to work for your campaign, to donate money for it, and of course to vote for you. I know there are lots of us out here (http://draftfredthompson.com/index.php/board,130.0.html) who are just waiting for you to make that announcement.
You are in our thoughts, our prayers, and our hopes for the future, Senator Thompson. We hope that you will answer this calling, even though it will be a hardship for you and your family. I believe that one of the things that makes you the best person for the job is the fact that you are not a power-hungry pawn of either party. You can make a real difference. Please let me know what I can do to help!
…And trust that you will stay that way!
It may be selfish of us, but as an Idaho conservative, we need you. Take care.
Gene Williams Sr.
May God continue to bless you with good health. Now when I pray that you will run for President (and win), I will also pray for His hand to keep you healthy.
My wife is beginning her fifth year of remission from breast cancer, a disease that took my mother. Modern surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy advances are just one step short of miraculous. We need a Conservative in office who will help that progress continue by stopping the government takeover of the health care industry.
I heard your statement about Border Security this morning. Your comments were exactly on point. I would only add that anybody who wants to justify allowing illegal aliens to continue to invade our country because they provide "cheap labor that other Americans won't" doesn't understand the enormous cost of that labor in increased taxes on the rest of us, increased burden on our social benefit programs and health care and education systems, and increased deferred liabilities for the Social Security System. Not to mention the costs we pay for increased law enforcement and for the loss of lives caused by some of the illegals.
We are on the road to bankrupting our society and our culture for the sake of lower initial cost of "THINGS," while we ignore the deferred costs.
I can't think of a better ticket than Fred Thompson for President and Mitt Romney for VP. With some luck that could mean 16 years of hope and a chance for the country to escape the clutches of the "Me, first" Democrats.
Democrats on Iraq: "We don't want to win. We just want to quit."
We are praying for a miraculous complete recovery... (imagine that headline).
Best wishes...
Senator,
Very good news about your cancer remission and type. You're in our thoughts and prayers.
We are all thankful that this condition will not (hopefully)effect your decision to run, or our decision to vote for you!
Thanks for the heads up. I'm probably getting ahead of myself, but I pray that you stay completely healthy through the presidential campaign, the White House years and beyond.
Sucking and ruining since October 2003.
...When Arlen Specter was diagnosed with and advanced case of Hodgkin's Lymphoma (aka Hodgkin's Disease). He went through chemo while still serving in the Senate and is still there today. It should be noted, though, that Specter did not suffer from any cancer associated with the disease (though he has survived cancer before, as the article notes).
Anyways...
My thoughts and prayers are with you, Senator Thompson. I hope you have a speedy recovery.

Senator Thompson,
I'm a student at Hillsdale College, a predominantly conservative school in southern central Michigan, and you've got a few fans here, myself included. My mom's also a big "Law and Order" fan, and one of your strongest supporters. However this challenge in your life should affect any major career decisions of yours in the next few weeks, the support and respect we have for you won't change. We know you will do what you know is right for the country, whatever that may be.
I hope that God will always grant you His guidance and strength in treating this disease and in leading this country, should you feel called to do so. You will be in my prayers and those of my family and my friends.
Keep faith,
--Anthony

Kudos to Fred Thompson for being honest with the people and wanting to serve the people! He is in remission. Doctors have said he is in remission and it is completely treatable in the unlikely event it returns. America needs Fred Thompson! HE IS THE ONLY CANDIDATE with the EXPERIENCE, STRENGTH and UNWAIVERING CHARACTER this country needs to lead us through the tough times ahead. HE HAS MY VOTE...I hope for our Country's sake he has yours too!
As Fred Thompson was being interviewed today by Neil Cavutto, I came away with one impression. Fred Thompson looks and sounds presidential. Fred is one impressive, classy guy.
I don't think the announcement about his medical diagnosis will detour his potential run for the White House anymore than Rudy's prostate cancer and McCain's skin cancer has detoured their campaigns. The truth is, cancer is a treatable disease and in Fred's case, is in remission. And lets not forget that FDR was in a wheel chair for much of his presidency.
I hope the democrats don't try to use Giuliani's, McCain's, and Fred Thompson's illnesses as a wedge to keep them out of office.

Our prayers are with you for continued remission. My wife's aggressive breast cancer has been in remission for 19 years. There is lots of life after cancer.
Keeping my powder dry - awaiting your decision.
Lord knows, your country needs you.
I don't know when he was diagnosed, but he had it in 1993 when I went to work for him. He was 63 at the time and retired as President of the bank at 65. This is 14 years later and he is still going strong, planting wheat and beans at the nice old age of 77. I am counting on you to do as well as him and be a good president.
P.S. Did you notice that he was president? No reason you can't do the same thing!!
I meant what I said and I said what I meant. An elephant's faithful 100 percent.
I also feel that you and your wife talked about this before you said the was open for you running. I also feel (and rightly so) that you planned to announce this so the people would know and if they wanted you go ahead and run.
I feel you our answer; RUN!!!!
If you you feel you are up for it then I'm still behind you 100%. Again I ask; Where do I send the check?

Fred: We saw your interview this afternoon and it went very well. Sorry to hear about your medical situation, but good to hear your strong resolve and your well-reasoned thoughts on the subject. Marianne and I are ready to go to work for you as soon as you decide to jump in the water. It should be quite a race and a lot of fun. Get the red pickup shined up and drive across the country. God bless you and your family.

Seriously, Senator Thompson, best of luck on your campaign. Thanks for confronting the health issue head-on; it will be a non-factor.
You are in my thoughts and prayers.
I have great hope that you will declare for the presidency. I truly believe you are the one who can unify and move the country forward, and no one else running, Republican or Democrat, can take the place that you could fill.
Your country calls!
I am relieved it appears to be something that can be managed and I am extremely pleased that you decided to share it now, rather than...
Now let's get to work and remind America about what they've been missing. I have my debit card in hand.
Best Wishes,
Jim

Whether or not you are physically up to the challenge.
But if you decide to run, count me as a supporter. Run -- The country needs strong Conservative leadership now. Your party needs you and wants you.
The terrorists are not going to stop, regardless how many kiss-hugs meet and greets Pelosi has with them. The terrorists have only one goal, world domination of Islam, submit or die. I believe there is another choice, destroy the terrorists until they lose their will to continue the fight.
Missed opportunity, all the Republican candidates should take their lead from McCain. That is, provided they really mean what they say about terror fighting, and not just blowing smoke. The morale clarity with which McCain spoke today stands as a model for all who would be President.
You're forthrightness will serve you well in this campaign. Frankly, I think the cancer is a non-issue. Now, Run!
of Massachusetts...optimistic you'll be throwing your hat in; heard you on Hannity yesterday & strongly agree with your decision making process, cancer disclosure & what's motivating you to consider the run;
already sensing some considerable momentum
Senator Thompson,
In that you I perceive you are soliciting reaction to how your cancer bears on a run for POTUS.
For myself and those I have spoken to who so instinctively like you (and that is the probably the most comprehensive way to explain what motivates our support) your current cancer condition is not an issue or a negative factor in our calculus.
I reason thusly. Every candidate has some chance of dying in office. That is why we have constitutional succession. I suppose we could try to quantify the chance of this possibility between each candidate but we typically don’t make that into an important criterion. Your diagnosis presently does not seem to put you at a high or unacceptable level of risk for this. But every candidate ought to plan for that possibility by selecting a well-qualified and principally compatible running mate, VP. I feel confident you will do so and will exercise my judgment as well when you do.
If your opponents do seek to make an issue of your risk, which seems inevitable, then the gross statistics must be used to quantify your risk level. Of course, any opposing candidate could come down with a terminal illness while in office as well. Age is a factor, but not the only one. Shall those who turn this into an issue require that your opponents reveal their medical records so that a fair comparison can be made between their risk level and yours? Furthermore, following the logic of this sort of thing, shall it be required to compare the risks for presidential spouses? Because the distraction of a debilitating illness could impact the conduct of the presidency and create a public controversy over the need to employ succession.
I can understand that you would want to politically inoculate yourself against this criticism before you announce. It is both publicly and personally undesirable to be on the defensive about your health and your life. However I hope that you will reach a decision based on your own executive judgment, perhaps I should say disinterested judgment, about your circumstances. The presidential role, IMO, requires character that can cut through the gnarly mass and reach flexible confidence that the right decision has been reached. Who among us knows more about your situation than you do? One simplistic test of leadership is the infectiousness of its confidence.
Assuming that you move beyond this; republican strategists are beginning to talk about how the crop of candidates must distinguish themselves from President Bush’s wounded administration. I hope this will not be done on the basis of ideology. Rather, much has been made about the execution of the federal government. The ability and qualification for performing as CEO or board chairman ought to be made into a significant issue. Ideology has hogged so much of the show in many of our minds. I am attracted to you both ideologically and personally. I sense that you share my values and that you deserve my trust. Let us take your measure as executive.
God bless you sir.
John E.
Thank you for your great service to our country. I pray that you continue to experience no adverse effects of lymphoma.
Right now, our country needs a strong, decisive, eloquent leader that will uphold our conservative values and will assert our will to defend ourselves against our foes. I believe you are that leader. I believe that you will coalesce our polarized citizenry around solutions to the vexing issues that surround us.
May God bless you and your candidacy.
You have our prayers and support here in Texas. With what they can do with cancer now, that is no concern to me and may you have long health. Please announce that you will run! I believe you will immedialtely jump to the front of the pack and then spare us Hillary or Obama. You will carry the South and all the other common sense states. By you running, it should give Gore pause at the thought of running against a fellow Tenneseean! LOL
If you are trying to guage response to your announcement of being diagnosed with NHL, count mine as positive. Hope you will run. You have my vote.
