Brownback's Itching for a Fight on Immigration
He's Ready to Fight McCain-Kennedy Bill

About a year ago, I wrote that Sen. Sam Brownback had irreparably harmed his chances at the 2008 Republican nomination by supporting a comprehensive immigration reform measure supported by Sen. Teddy Kennedy. Brownback's crime? He voted with Senators Arlen Specter (Pa.), Lindsey Graham (S.C.) and Mike DeWine (Ohio) to send the bill out of the Judiciary Committee.
But could Brownback improve his chances by reversing course on immigration? It's not a bad strategy, and one that Brownback appears to be considering. He stopped by Bloggers' Row this afternoon to do a short one-on-one interview with me. My first question had to do with the upcoming immigration debate in the Senate featuring a McCain-Kennedy bill that'll probably be worse than last year's legislation.
Read on . . .
Brownback told me he's working on a Republican alternative with such conservative stalwarts as Senators John Cornyn (Tex.) and Jon Kyl (Ariz.). Sen. Arlen Specter (Pa.) is also in the mix, but Brownback assured me this legislation would be preferable to the bill that McCain will soon put forward. Having just made a trip to the border 10 days ago, Brownback said he has a real appreciation for the challenges America faces at the border.
The strategy is smart on two level. In terms of legislation, Republicans need an alternative. I'm sure I'll prefer whatever Sen. Jeff Sessions introduces, but other conservatives might see the Brownback-Cornyn-Kyl-Specter tandem as as the most realistic alternative. On another level, he's directly challenging McCain on an issue that's likely to enrage the base.
Finally, I asked Brownback about his strong placement (fourth place) in the South Carolina straw poll. He attributed it to his pro-family and pro-life message. Brownback, in fact, called himself a "bleeding-heart conservative" who wanted to be known as the "family president."

Having just made a trip to the border 10 days ago, Brownback said he has a real appreciation for the challenges America faces at the border.
So before then he thought it was just an overblown joke or something? Does he have to take a trip to North Korea and Iran in order to appreciate that they are problems too?
I'd rather he stuck to his guns (even if I thought he was wrong) than make it look like he's flip-flopping to pander to the CPAC crowd.
It happens. But we'll see how serious he is about it when he finally proposes his bill.
He is moving up, though. Time for me to do some serious research on him to see if I want him more than I want Rudy

I disagree with Brownback on immigration, but I'm interested in what he's going to propose.
If he can show a sensible approach to the problem, even if he's not as firm as I might like, I could get behind him. There's a lot to like on other grounds.
What I'm not willing to accept is a leader captive to "bleeding-heart" decision making. I'm looking for a good President, not just a good man.

. . . maybe his next “fight” will be to scale back the $149 Billion Farm Bill and the $749 Billion Medicare Part D entitlement he was so proud to have supported.
I'm not a South Park Republican, I'm a King of the Hill libertarian.
I'll never vote for anyone who supprted BOTH the farm bill and medicare part D. One out of two I might swallow, but anyone who consistently votes for massive entitlement expansions is not a true conservative, no matter what his position on immigration.
Shouldn`t you at least see what he and his team propose before you call him a flip-flopper?
Senator Brownback has always supported border security, including a fence; the new McCain bill is said to be much worse than the original (which is why he's not supporting it) so it's pretty justified for you to call this a "flip-flop," I guess, since it's pretty much been his position since he got to Congress.
It's only a flip-flop insofar as one is willing to credit those who have dishonestly characterized his position on immigration as having been correct all along.

Sorry, but anyone who's going to tell us that he's "changed his mind" just to win over the base is not what I'm looking for. I want a conservative LEADER. I have yet to hear from any except Gingrich, who a lot of people seem to quickly dismiss based on baggage (as if all the others are squeaky-clean).
I'm not a South Park Republican, I'm a King of the Hill libertarian.
What's wrong with supporting either Rep. Duncan Hunter, Rep. Tom Tancredo, or Rep. Ron Paul if you really are looking for a "always a conservative" leader to support? I'm guessing that you also don't like candidates without much of both name recognition and money already available to them? The '08 Presidential race is still very early, and anything can happen in the world of politics.
Answer: Tom Tancredo’s pretty much a single-issue nativist, Ron Paul’s an isolationist, and Duncan Hunter’s an authoritarian.
I'm not a South Park Republican, I'm a King of the Hill libertarian.
There's that word again - nativist. I don't recall Tancredo EVER denouncing immigration. He is however, one of the few politicians who has the nuts to take a stand and speak out against our government's disgraceful failure to enforce it's immigration laws. If that makes him a "nativist" then you can out me down as one too! I'll wear the label proudly.
...only in it to move the immigration debate to the right, which is fine. Ron Paul, of course, recently said, from the floor of the House, that President Bush wanted to "trick Iran and the public into a Gulf of Tonkin-type incident," and then immediately follow up with a "full-scale nuclear attack."
But by all means, support away.
is wasting his time. He has no charisma, no chance. I like him as 1 of 100. Not the 1.
I do believe that the final '08 GOP Presidential choice, whoever it may be, will be more than ready for the final push towards victory thanks to the GOP primaries!
Nativist, authoritarian, what on earth do you think this parcel of land referred to as the United States of America is?
How about a sovereign, Constitutional Republic? As a descendant of Revolutionary War Soldiers, I would urge you to remember a high price was paid to render this land an independent nation.
So Sam Brownback is itching for a fight over immigration. Have him go tell the parents of the thirteen year old child who was kidnapped and taped to a tree by an illegal from Mexico about how we benefit from affordable labor. Visit
http://www.immigrationshumancost.org and witness some of the victims of our "guests". In particular read the story of nine year old Jordin Paulder; it is gruesome beyond belief. What's wrong with extending compassion towards our own citizenry Mr. Brownback?
This isn't a lark. This is about the survival of a nation, a generous, caring nation. These so-called conservative stalwarts Brownback and Pence need to understand that a broad segment of Republican voters will stay home in November of next year if we have nothing more than the status quo to vote for on "immigration".
That dime's worth of difference is down to about three cents.
If Edward Gibbon were alive today, what would be the subject of his next work?

I often wonder why we're discussing reasonable compromises, in a debate about foreign invaders? Or, am I just being "nativist"?
I live in Texas and am forced to learn Spanish just to keep my job. How do you think I feel? Its a good thing to learn a foreign language, its not so good when you are forced to because so many invaders have taken over your region, and they are not learning your own language.

What part of "illegal" don't these wonks understand? And they're the ones who write law??? Sheesh.
Brownback should be forever thanked by conservatives for his efforts during the Harriet Miers fiasco. He was instrumental in getting the administration to drop that awful nomination.
However, I lost a lot of respect for Brownback when he sided with Ted Kennedy on immigration. It was absolutely infuriating to see one of the supposed stalwarts on our side support the Left on a hugely important issue like immigration. I'm not going to believe for a second any sort of sudden conversion by him on this.

seeing is believing. Someone who has been isolated a long time in D.C. actually might not appreciate the hardships illegal immigration have wrought on border communities and states until they experience the devastation up close. Actions speak louder than words, but perhaps the senator was honest when he said what he had seen had a profound effect on him. We'll see what happens from here.
As usual, all of the GOP Presidential candidates will be moving to the "political right" on all of the issues to please the conservative voters base.
Let's see what he comes up with, but given his past activist record on Amnesty I am extremely doubtful that he wasn't just blowing smoke.
Interesting article.
Anyway, brownback should stick to his position on immigration because a lot of people will view him as a flip-flopper and if he thinks the tancredo folks will vote for him because of the flip-flop,then he's dreaming.
The American people could support a man/woman that they disagree with on a specific issue if that person is straight with them and explain to them why he/she is taking that position. But i do not believe the American public would support a flip-flopper that would switch his position base on upcoming election, then as soon as election season is over, they revert back to their previous position. You cant trust a flip-flopper.
McCain may be hated by some in the conservative base, but at least, with him,you know he's a straight talker that would tell you where he stands even if he knows you might not agree. This is why a lot of people respect him.
The best thing Brownback could do now is just stick with his previous position and not flip-flop because he's running for president.
Sen. Brownback is my representative, and I'll never vote for him again, simply because of his love affair with the criminal immigrant invaders.
