Whatever else one might say about John McCain--and Heaven knows, I have my disagreements with him--he deserves great praise for being one of the most stalwart supporters of the reconstruction effort in Iraq. His editorial on the subject deserves attention.

And yes, I am aware of the great "controversy" that surrounded his visit to Iraq. And no, I don't care. The people who made fun of the visit latched on to a simplistic and stylistic critique of McCain rather than grappling with the larger and more significant issues attached to the reconstruction effort. In far too many circles, mockery has taken the place of serious analysis, even for this most serious of subjects and topics. At some point, there stops being a reason to indulge that mockery any further by responding to it and affording it legitimacy in the process.

Stylistic Critique by benjjneb

Was the above post directed toward McCain's visit, or towards the Pelosi in a head scarf controversy?

Every time I work up a real strong dislike for the man, he pulls something like this and wins back some respect. I still won't vote for him in the primaries, but I will definately vote for him in the general if he gets that far.

Dumb and Dumber reference? by CharlesJ_GOP

Harry: Just when I thought you couldn't get any dumber, you go and do something like this... and totally redeem yourself!

Seriously, I don't like McCain. He seems to pander to the press far too often. Media Whore is the common phrase that comes to mind. And he has a LONG way to go before he totally redeems himself.

However! He's a genuine American Hero. No doubt about that, he deserves respect just for that. And occasionally he shows some of that backbone and stands up to the press. He did it in this case with the walk through Bagdad. He stood up to the hecklers and the media when he "Made the situation worse" by answering "I just did." when someone started to question him about his statement that it was safe to walk the street in Bagdad.

For these things he'll get my vote if he manages to win the primary. I still don't like him much and won't vote for him in the primary, but I'd far prefer him to Hillary or Obama or any of the other liberals on the Democratic side.
