Reid's Rules of Order

Why this process is a sham

Is it too much to ask that our U.S. senators be afforded time to read the legislation they're voting on? Under Harry Reid's rules of order, that's not happening. The Corner has an amazing story about what's taking place right now behind closed doors in the Senate.

This type of behavior is precisely what turned off so many Republicans the first time around. Sen. Jim DeMint (R.-S.C.) explains the consequences in this floor speech.

absolutely nothing. It's exactly why we peons were saying the bill should not be reopened. This process is not just flawed - it's hopelessly broken. Will McConnell get fed up with it?

McConnell is IN ON IT by Neil Stevens

Sen. Reid has said the only reason he's able to do this is with McConnell's cooperation on the matter.

Run like Reagan!

of why McConnell is still Minority Leader. He is totally shafting his own caucus members. (And Republicans and Americans in general, but thats a different topic.)

Twenty-five GOP Senators voted against cloture on this beast the first time. There is a good chance that more will do so the next time. That is over half the Republican caucus in the Senate. If they don't dump McConnell for his actions here to strip them of their hallowed Senatorial "rights" then I have to assume many of them secretly approve of his actions.

Vitter is livid and DeMint read in a letter that, from what I picked up at the end of it, blasted McConnell for helping orchestrate this charade.

How can McConnell and Lott be in bed with Reid on this total fiasco?

Stunning! by K G Hanson

This is staggering! Just watching this is enough to make a guy want to jump out of his chair screaming. What sort of legislative body has the Senate become that Senators don't even have the chance to know what they are voting on??? And of course, who is leading the charge but Feinstein?

Wow! Thanks for posting this!

Thanks Di by OCRight

I am once again so proud to be a Californian! We sure can count on our "representatives" taking the wrong line! It is astounding that DiFi can stand there with a straight face and deny the American people their voice.

Why is DeMint the only one crying foul from the floor? Don't these others realize that if this works, someday it will be used against them too? I am flabbergasted by the seeming totality of ignorance on the part of the members of the senate.

Soldier's Mom - Golfer's Wife - Home alone a lot

I'd like to think this is all a process by which to torpedo the entire bill, but my heart tells me the number of corrupt and clueless Senators vastly outnumber those who have common sense and want to do the right thing.

The senators don't read any of the bills, that is why this country as we know it has been over. I have said this for the last 18 years. It is over--whether you elect democrats or republicans--the only thing different is the pace at which they bring this thing down, but make no mistake about it, the trend is down. We can vent and express our opinions on this nice blog, but any illusory victories we achieve are temporary. I may just make it, but I feel sorry for all your kids--the USA will in no way resemble the great country our parents knew.

I take it the "divisions" is the "clay pigeon" business that lets Reid control the floor without interruption - other than Vitter repeatedly trying to expose what a total charade this is - while these are mowed down. But is the "tabling" of these killing them off or delaying them? I'm lost as to what is going on. Are these pieces being tables the 27 cherry-picked ones or everything except that. This is a total joke of a process.

Tableing by rblack198

From what I gather tableing of amendments effectively kills them for the purpose of the "clay pigeon".

"Cowards cut and run, Marines never do"

They are tabling the cherry-picked ones and will bring them up again during the 30 hours or whatever it is if the next cloture vote passes. Anything other than these is apparently never going to see the light of day unless it gets a voice vote that's guaranteed to fail.

Grassley is talking now - he sounds mad as hell. Reid is blaming Vitter for everything that anyone like Grassley or anyone else doesn't like.

He feels this bill is overriding what the Finance Committee thinks is a better approach to something dealing with worker IDs and penalties if I catch the gist of his ire.
