Chertoff Won't Let Enviros Stop Border Fence

670 miles to be completed by end of year

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff is taking heat from liberals and winning praise from conservatives for standing up to environmentalists who want to halt construction of the fence along the U.S.-Mexico border.

In a wide-ranging interview a handful of bloggers yesterday, Chertoff said his department was on target to build the congressionally mandated 670 miles of fence by the end of the year -- 370 pedestrian and 300 vehicle. Doing so would ensure that the next administration won't be able to derail the plan.

This week Chertoff announced he would bypass the National Environmental Policy Act and 30 other laws that could have delayed construction. Environmentalists managed to bring construction to a crawl during a previous fence project -- it took 14 years to build 11 miles of fence near San Diego. "That's basically a mile a year," Chertoff said. "At that rate if we were going to cover what we need to cover at the border it would be seven centuries. We do not have that long to wait."

Chertoff's promise to complete the fence comes at a time when Congress is considering a new round of immigration legislation. Chertoff appeared unconvinced that anything substantive would pass this year, but he indicated the ball would be in Congress' court.

During yesterday's interview, Chertoff also spoke about implementing Real ID and dispelling myths about a national ID card. Earlier this week, Chertoff's department secured a promise from one final holdout, Maine, to enact tougher licensing requirements in exchange for a waiver on Real ID compliance.

Did someone pull Secretary Chertoff's chain or something. He's actually showing some signs of life on this issue.

Now how about start pushing the Social Security Administration to turn over the names of businesses with large numbers of "unmatched" employee SSN's. Not the names of the people or numbers, just the business names.

You think? by SteveLA

If only President Bush would grow a pair on this issue, McCain would win in a landslide.

Think how far a Presidential executive order for the Social Security Administration to start turning over the names of businesses with a large (statistically) number of "unmatched" SSN's to homeland security for investigation, but no individual numbers. A few raids with DHS, Social Security folks inspecting I9's and other required by law employment documents at these businesses with "funny" stats. A few business owners who get caught hiring illegals "big time", doing a perp walking for the cameras, with bus loads of illegal aliens given a free ride to the border or face prosecution.

Priceless!

Love to see "Drivers Licenses for illegals" Obama decrying the evil Bush for doing what Democrats say they want, namely going after businesses that hire illegals, and John McCain pledging to continue the President's actions once in office.

All it takes is a Presidential executive order.

*there's a very funny bit to that but I may be the only person to get the joke.

Secretary Chertoff is riding into the sunset—dragging the fence behind him. As mentioned in yesterday’s immigration blog by Steve Elliott the Sun Sets on the Border Fence On 12/31/08. This sunset provision of the Omnibus bill H.R. 2764 declares that the Secretary of Homeland Security loses all authority to build the fence—even if he wants to.

However, even with the authority to build the fence, the Secretary has been lazy in using it. In a February 22, press release he claims that the Department of Homeland Security has built 302.4 miles of combination pedestrian and vehicle fencing and well on the way of completing its goal of 670 miles of combined fencing by the end of 2008.

Just as Grassfire discovered the Border Fence Hoax, Grassfire reveals that the 302.4 miles are also a hoax. According to our sources in Duncan Hunter’s office, the actual miles of fence built since the Secure Fence Act are 79 miles of pedestrian fence and 88 miles of vehicle barriers. Less than ten miles of the fence are double layered.

Exposing DHS's Border Fence Myth: How 302 Miles Is Actually Less Than 10 - this is from grassfire.org which seems to have a good record of tracking this issue IMO.

Time for talk is over - build it.

It's not the only component, nor do I think it's the most critical component to actually stemming the influx of illegals & starting the self-removal of most illegals. The key to that is jobs mainly, with government largesses being a close second. Take away those 2 magnets, & most illegals will go elsewhere until they're back from whence they came. Then, the focus could be on the remaining illegals who would more likely be here for other criminal intentiions and securing the border from drug smugglers & OTM's.

Can someone explain the by WalterSobchak

Can someone explain the benefits of a partial or border-long fence? How does it keep immigrants out? Thanks!

OK, thanks. by WalterSobchak

OK, thanks.

... but, in conjunction with penalizing employers who hire illegal immigrants and cutting any form of benefits or social services (barring life saving medical attention) to people who are here illegally, it would work pretty well.

Does that answer you question?

Thanks, but why wouldn't I be interested in the answer?
