Remarks of Justice Scalia, Justice Thomas, and Justice Alito to the Federalist Society

Talk about a lineup of judicial giants: Scalia, Thomas, and Alito on tap.

Very tasty.

(Live blogging below the fold)

Justice Scalia gave some brief remarks about his early involvement in the Federalist Society, praised the society's mission of seeking to preserve the original understanding of the Constitution, and stated (to wild applause) that he hoped to be around for the 50th anniversary of the organization (which is celebrating its 25th anniversary tonight).

O.k., Justice Thomas is up, and the crowd is going nuts for him (even more so than when Scalia spoke---Sorry, Nino). Justice Thomas is speaking about the influence the Federalist Society has had on him over the years. He just threw out some love to the Privileges or Immunities clause. Oh, how I love this great man.

He called the Senate's unwillingness to confirm Judge Bork "a travesty." And all the people said, "Amen!"

He is now praising the founders of the Federalist Society he stood up "for principle," and doing so showed "great courage." Courage, according to Justice Thomas, is an "essential human quality."

"Courage gave us the Federalist Society."

Finally, Justice Alito. He too receives a warm greeting from the crowd.

He is discussing his history with the Federalist Society, and noting that his first encounter with the organization was in the 1980s. He notes that while the society has great respect for the founding fathers, it should also take great pride in the founders of the Federalist Society.

*Judge Bork was supposed to speak, but apparently that fell through. Either that, or I missed his speech during a bathroom break. If so, my bad.

You are one lucky dog. by itrytobenice

I meant what I said and I said what I meant. An elephant's faithful 100 percent.

I'm So Jealous by BananaRepublican

I'm so jealous that you get to hear all of these great justices speak! That the Chief Justice isn't there keeps me my jealousy in bounds. If he were there, I might be slightly psychotically jealous! LOL. :-)

That's unfortunate news about Judge Bork. When he was on Laura Ingraham this summer, he sounded to be in very bad condition. I'm afraid that the former intellectual giant's brain might be aging. It was a very painful interview that Laura had to help him out on a whole lot. It was sad.

I hope Judge Bork is alright and that his bowing out is not an ominous sign.

Moe Lane by BenSKuipers

I didn't think Alito's comments were nearly as substantive as those of either Justice Scalia or Justice Thomas. The Federalist Society is truly a magnificent organization in every meaning of the word. I'm pleased you appreciate Justice Thomas, and I'd ask your fellow redstaters to perhaps actually read his opinions for their substantive worth. It appears that whenever an individual posts support for his judicial decisions on this site, they are banned. Tragic and despicable, especially Moe Lane, who apparently gets frequent flyer-miles for each member of the Federalist Society he bans from Redstate. It would be interesting if he showed up at any of our meetings. Things have a propensity to become acrimonious when RINOs attempt to pass themselves off as conservative or libertarian.

Hi there.

You don't know me -- heck, you probably don't know who I am, or you'd have been reading long enough to know basic site etiquette, and we wouldn't be having this discussion. Let me introduce myself.

My name -- well, not my real name, but my handle -- is Thomas Crown. (Great movie -- the remake was pretty cool, too.) Anyway, just so you'll know enough about me to understand why I've banned your account:

I'm an unapologetic conservative -- a reactionary, really -- who was a Federalist Society member in law school and has only not been a member since graduation because I barely have the time to see my wife and kids, who matter more. I plan on naming one of my sons Antonin. I think Clarence Thomas is one of the best administrative law writers the Court has ever had, and I'm a huge fan of his work. I'm one of the three most stridently pro-life voices around here -- conservative Catholic, wot -- and I'm actually quite fond of Federalism and originalism. (I believe Marbury v. Madison, let alone the incorporation doctrine, is a travesty, and in an ideal universe, we'd have a revolution over those things tomorrow.) I am, and I say this with pride, arguably the most conservative member of this site, and considering I have to compete with two (other) people who don't see anything wrong with monarchy, that's a pretty impressive title.

I'm also a Director of this site, and have been involved here since the site first opened its doors. I'm proud to be a part of one heck of a group of good people doing good work.

I also loathe Ron Paul because he chums with Nazis. I'm an ex-Pat Texan who actually paid attention to his staff and his political associations, so don't sputter at me, kid. (I went to your rival school for undergrad, by the way. You guys were always the second rate school then.) Deal with it.

You made a few critical mistakes here.

First, you called out someone by name. Awful idea. Normally gets you a warning then a toss if you can't behave.

Second, you imputed political positions to the majority of this site that the majority of this site does not hold. Stupid, really.

Third, you came back after being banned. Now that was dumb -- it's against our rules. You're warned: Next time you come back, I drop your IT department and your dean a note.

Fourth, you are apparently in end-stage prefrontal lobe death. I'm so sorry for your tragedy, but even if First through Third above were not true, that would disqualify you from posting here.

Goodbye. Stay gone. And don't infect the Federalist Society with your candidate's Nazi-affiliations -- the Society retains a warm spot in my heart.

T.

P.S. Moe beat me to offing you, idiot. He lost the race this time.

-----------
We are all heroes, you and Boo and I. Hamsters and rangers everywhere, rejoice!

And I'm always happy to accommodate the Federalist Society's desire to protect its brand by commissioning little jobs like yours.

The Fuzzy Puppy of the VRWC. I've been usurped!
