Two more shots of RedState 3.0

In contemplating RedState 3.0, the user community has demanded we bring back one feature from RedState 1.0 that we lost with Drupal: tracking of a user's comments.
When we went to our designers we told them that this is one of our non-negotiable issues. Another was the ability to easily see when new comments have been added since a user last visited the site. This second one will not be ready right at launch, but it is coming back. The first one was so important to our users that we insisted it be ready for launch.
It is so important to the community, we designed it in two different ways. You can access whichever you prefer.
Under the new "My Diary" link, you will be able to see all of your comments and also get an RSS feed to all of your posts and a year/month archive of everything. See a screenshot here.
Under the new "My Profile" link, you will be able to see all of your comments linked to the posts in which they were made. See a screenshot here.

I've been planning to address both those issues since before I ever even got my hands on the code. It's just not been a top priority yet, but I'll get to it soon. Maybe I'll just do it today after I add the markdown editing buttons.

is "better" than what we have now and what we had when we could tract comments more precisely.
2.0 is different than 1.0 but not better, and from what I see so far of 3.0, I am rather sad.
Change for the sake of change? IT income needs?
I just feel (and I hardly ever use that word "feel" but I am obviously in whine mode, so...) like we are fixing something that isn't broken, except that we never got the promised restoration of the better comment tracker.
The best things about Redstate are the ease of debate and that one can click on the front page and see all the topics of the diaries.
rant over for now
but man, I would just hate for Redstate to change what caused me to land here.

Honestly I expected people to be happy to get away from it.

Look at RS 3 this way: Right now, it's still the regular season, and while Kobe is healthy, Gasol is still getting back into shape, and Bynum is still on the zero-g treadmill.
By the time the site is launched, Gasol will be at 100%, and things will be good. But over time we'll bring Bynum back, and you'll no more look back than Lot did.

I only understood Kobe and Lot in that whole mixed bible/sports metaphor thingy...
Could you translate for gamers?

Right now Link's a little short on bombs. By the time we launch though he'll have gotten the white sword and some bombs, which will leave us a bit better off than we are now. Some time after launch he'll be able to bomb his way to more hearts and the master sword, which will leave us way way way better off than we are now.

RS 3 is like a Paladin. We may seem weaker at first, but once our powers come in... watch out.

I've been mucking around a little. It is definitely different and I'm pretty illiterate at this point, but so far, I like it. And, long term, I think it really will give more flexibility.
Those of us that are OLD are just going to have to go with the flow and learn a few new tricks.

he's been cranky ever since he found out that his favorite buggy whip manufacturer is now into S&M products, and he will have to find some other method of getting his horse's attention.
On the other hand, this computer thingy HAS made it easier for Mike to communicate. On windy days his smoke messages used to get blown away before you had the opportunity read them.

Not exactly the same topic as tracking comments, but I'd really like a tool like "my watched blogs" feature.
Some dialogs I like to follow, some not so much, but have to go hunting when they drop of the radar by dropping out of recent blogs or not being pushed up to the recommended blog list.
Call it a please consider request.

Expect the feature to come sometime after launch when everything's settled down.
In fact it's ticket #18 of 62 in our issue tracker, heh.

Would I be able to view another person's chain of comments? This way, I would know whether I am responding to a serious poster, someone making a sarcastic remark, or a rank troll.

A couple suggestions....(I'm not sure if it's been covered)
1) Put a date and time stamp on each post for those of us who read everything in the thread and return later to pick up what we missed
2) Allow two rows for titles so they don't hide a poster's name.
3) Subsequent posts work like a tree with the same sized text box and shifted rightward with each additional post.
4)Allow users to close threads that have been read to allow for more posts to be displayed on a page
My apologies if I am covering ground which I'm sure have already been covered but I thought I'd throw them out just in case.

The biggest part of it was being able to see when we had a response to a particular comment.
