Texas Loses Its Mind...Again

Governor Rick Perry and his posse are at it again, this time spending Texas money to save us from ourselves over our inability to put down that burrito and back away:
Texas has invested $250,000 for a possible miracle drug to fight obesity.
[...]
To fight obesity, the state has investing in a company that says it's working hard for an injection that cuts body fat quickly. From a person trained for long, hard work, Greg Galindo, a trainer at Pure Austin Fitness said he's cautious of any drug to take off fat.
"I'm just not in favor of that quick fix" Galindo said. "It may help with the obesity, but would it actually make the person healthier?"
The state is willing to see. It just gave $250,000 to Halsa Pharmaceuticals for its research on an injection that cuts body fat.
The money comes from an emerging technology fund approved by the Legislature in 2005.
For you non-Texans, that "Emerging Technology Fund" has been disrespectfully called Perry's "slush fund" and is frequently used to provide cash incentives (meaning tax breaks) to entice companies to move to Texas. Sounds good on paper, but while taxes inch up at the state and local levels looking for ever-new and wildly creative revenue streams the state still insists on spending NEW money on old problems best solved by changes in personal behavior...
Lest we forget, it was just over a year ago that Perry was trying to line another pharma company's pockets when he ordered cervical cancer vaccines for schoolgirls. Fortunately, Perry's, err, hat was handed to him in the Legislature on that one, but the esteemed "Conservative" (yes, quote-end quote Conservative) Governor seems hell-bent on taking charge of our lives and spending OUR money to do it.
[hand raised from the cheap seats] Isn't personal responsibility and being accountable for our own lives and the actions we take one of the cornerstones of the Conservative ideology?
Here's a thought: Put down the triple meat with cheese Whataburger, and go to the gym.

We all have a chuckle around here (more like a *groan*) when we hear about Perry's national reputation as a rising conservative star, a possible Veep, and the like.
He's an empty suit, maybe worse, who has benefited tremendously by the "right place, right time" thing. Happened to be Lt Gov when Governor Bush ran for and won the presidency, so he moves to the Governor spot. He wins re-election because, outside of the People's Republics of Austin, Dallas, and Houston, Texas is the reddest of red states. Frankly a ham sandwich with an "R" next to his name will defeat any "D" in a state-wide election here.

Is a far cry from a conservative. But he is an Aggie, which gets him a solid 40% of the vote on its own.
I propose a new government program to battle obesity: Food Abstinence Training, or F.A.T.
Instead of looking for a new thing to ingest which fights obesity, we here at the F.A.T. Institute focus on preventitive measures---an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of meat.
Our F.A.T. therapists and other F.A.T. people here are committed to working with obese youth, teaching them it's okay to put the pie down.

You had a little bit of blasphemy in the first title.
You spelled the great state of Texas "Teaxs".

is that "conservative" and "Rick Perry" rarely occupy the same sentence unless the C word is fronted with "is not a."
