Arkin to Troops: You Mercenaries Should Shut Up!

By Erick Posted in Comments (54) / Email this page » / Leave a comment »

Whoa. Just whoa. You know the clip we had up top about the troops? The one where the soliders said they were tired of people saying they support the troops but oppose the war? You know the one.

Well, Bill Arkin at the Washington Post seems to think that the troops need to shut up because the nation is tired of feeding them and supporting their blood lust. At least, that appears to be his point. He also seems to think that the troops are dupes who would lead a coup to protect the nation from the people if we weren't the U.S. (and it's a bloody good thing we are the U.S. so Mr. Akin can use the 1st Amendment to protect himself).

So, we pay the soldiers a decent wage, take care of their families, provide them with housing and medical care and vast social support systems and ship obscene amenities into the war zone for them, we support them in every possible way, and their attitude is that we should in addition roll over and play dead, defer to the military and the generals and let them fight their war, and give up our rights and responsibilities to speak up because they are above society?

He goes on to refer to them as mercenaries who think they are doing dirty work, but that Iraq is not even "necessary" work.

At least Mr. Arkin does not even pretend to support the troops. He would rather, it seems, fire them all or leave them to fend for themselves in Iraq so the nation can resume its self-loathing. We'll give him points for honesty.

UPDATE: Mason Conservative suggested I should also point out this quote, which immediately precedes the quote above:

Through every Abu Ghraib and Haditha, through every rape and murder, the American public has indulged those in uniform, accepting that the incidents were the product of bad apples or even of some administration or command order.

What a pompous, America hating ass.

HAHA........ if keeps talking crap like this, it will take MORE than the 1st Amendment to protect him!!!

example: Maybe some downtrodden soldier returning from Iraq, just loses his wife, car, and dog, reads Mr. Arskins comments and decides to respond in a creative way that he learned over in Iraq.

Just a thought....

I can't say more I'll be banned for sure.....lmao

The people who take the position that the average American soldier is an unthinking dolt are usually more circumspect about saying so.

held the legionaries in the same low regard, as did the British upper class hold the British soldier and, especially, sailor. Both thought highly of a pratorian who led, or claimed to, the scum of the Earth however. Just an observation, don't know what it really means.

You just hit it square on the head.

Democrats = patricans and proletariats

Republicans = plebeians

seems to escape those we place in office. We own policy, we own the res publica, yet when we get elected, we seek the approval of the Praetorians and forsake the Plebes.

The thing that always kills me about these people is they fail to realize that their ability to exist is predicated on their pontifications being false. If any of what they said was true they would be in an unmarked grave someplace off the beaten path.

Veritas magna est et praevalet.

I can remember when my brother was staging out for Gulf War I (he was an Army aviator). We sent him big boxes of oatmeal (because the MREs plugged him up) with recent issues of Playboy (because being in the desert plugged other things up). We had to hide the magazines pretty carefully in the oatmeal because before the war started, his base was in Saudi. And we were warned that the Saudis are rather... well, strict in regard to indecency.

Just doing our bit to ensure top effectiveness for our troops.

"Mercenaries". In other words, the troops are from the same country as Mr. Arkin. Did he renounce his citizenship?

And his bit at the top about not believing that the troops were picked at random, that it's all part of some military PR campaign.

Projection. That's what he would do to get the story.

The Academy: researching the Illiberal Arts

just because this is the US that at some point in the very foreseeable future, the radical leftists now in control of Congress won't cross the line and we have a military supported rebellion? I think they may be towing it now.

Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap;
An hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.

Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that,
an' "Tommy, 'ow's yer soul?"

But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll,

The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it's "Thin red line of 'oroes" when the drums begin to roll.

Erick, you forgot one part by Mason Conservative

You should have added the three paragraphs immediatly proceeding the one you post:

"These soldiers should be grateful that the American public, which by all polls overwhelmingly disapproves of the Iraq war and the President's handling of it, do still offer their support to them, and their respect.
Through every Abu Ghraib and Haditha, through every rape and murder, the American public has indulged those in uniform, accepting that the incidents were the product of bad apples or even of some administration or command order.

Sure it is the junior enlisted men who go to jail, but even at anti-war protests, the focus is firmly on the White House and the policy. We just don't see very man "baby killer" epithets being thrown around these days, no one in uniform is being spit upon."

isn't true. Had that happen to me right here in the grand ol' Big Apple a few times. The patriotic 'bump' after 9/11 wore off in many parts of NYC by 2003. I always tried to take it in stride - not easy for me. I make it a point to thank any troop I see in uniform (I'm retired now but travel quite a bit in my job), by the looks of surprise on their faces, I know they don't hear something nice very often.

The money quotes: by Cicero

"I also hope that military commanders took the soldiers aside after the story and explained to them why it wasn't for them to disapprove of the American people."

"These soldiers should be grateful that the American public, which by all polls overwhelmingly disapproves of the Iraq war and the President's handling of it, do still offer their support to them, and their respect.

Through every Abu Ghraib and Haditha, through every rape and murder, the American public has indulged those in uniform"

"this NBC report is just an ugly reminder of the price we pay for a mercenary - oops sorry, volunteer - force that thinks it is doing the dirty work."

Also, go check out the link for were he implies that "Hoover's and Nixon's" will use these poor naive soldiers for a coup.

First of all- did Nixon resort to a coup? No he did not. Might I also note that it was FDR, not Hoover who involved us in war. How did Hoover end up paired with Nixon anyway?

Oh yeah, that's right, Hoover was that bad man who insisted on non-government intervention during the Great Depression so he could starve poor people. (Actually he supported intervention, but Hoover felt he was restrained by the Constitution, unlike FDR).

Jeez, these people are all insane. Yesterday some fellow on Fox News was claiming that Hugo Chavez was not a tyrant, and that he only needed to "rule by decree" so that he could institute JFK's plan for land reform- and then topped it off by claiming that G.W.Bush was a tyrant because of Guatanamo Bay.

In the early years of the Great Depression, WWI vets, who had been promised a bonus that was payable a few years hence, marched on DC demanding the payment schedule be moved up. The administration (and I'm almost certain it was Hoover) refused, and the demonstrators set up a semi-permanent encampment, on the mall if I remember correctly. After a few days of this, Hoover sent in the Army to break things up (under Doug McArthur, I beleive), and I think there were some fatalities.

This piece was probably just a botched joke about how stupid Bush is, anyway.

The ice has been broken now and it isn't far from here to spitting on the troops as they walk on the street or midnight phone calls to the spouss and kids wishing Mommy or Daddy dead.

It's finally begun. I for one am releaved that the long wait is finally over and the inevitable liberal truth is finally coming out.

This time will be different because I, and people like me, will not allow it. If I'm ever around when anyone says anything to a serviceman, I will personally take the slimer on.

I will not stand idly by as some limp wristed piece of crap berates one of our soldiers. And I'll betcha I can take most of them.

That has taken thousands of years the work of civilizations that have risen and fallen, billions of man years of effort, and the genius of the best minds in mathematics, physics, chemistry and economics. All the above so you might be able to have a computer and access to the internet.

You're toast.

I read the Piece Twice by Marcus Traianus

I read the article twice and at first thought it some kind of sick satire.

Is this what Bill believes passes for ardent patriotism today? His self loathing, hateful oratory is remarkable in the fact he seems to truly believe this garbage.

Why is this presented as useful journalism, to have the 1% of like minded leftists high five each other?

We could take that same section quoted above and replace military with "Congress" or "The Executive Branch". Will that be the next piece in Bill's series of articles?

Truly another sign the left has no respect, affinity or love for our Democratic Republic and Constitution.

Why should anyone take Arkin seriously when he, a professional journalist, doesn't even know the proper way to use an apostrophe?

Thats hilarious.

the companies that place ad's in the Post and of course include the article as well. That is what they will understand loss of money, if enough people tell the advertisers that they will not buy anything the company sells if they continue to place ad in Post I believe that we will see an apology, which is not nearly enough but perhaps even more they lose so much money they go out of business. I know it's a pipe dream however it is a start and the very least we can do for our troops.

The Powerline people were also irked by Arkin's poor grammar. It's the perfect combination: an insipid pile of snobbish hatred decorated with some elementary grammar mistakes.

Arkin by Jon Sandor

Ignoring for the moment what he said, I'm struck by how badly these professional writers write.

... liberals are thinking so far above the plane where the rest of us exist that they simply don't have the time or interest to be concerned about mere words, spelling or grammer.

They know that the rest of humanity are eagerly awaiting their pearls of wisdom. And, like the troops, none of us are educated anyway so how would we know whether the grammer is right?

time to string this loser up!

As satisfying as that sounds, the fact that this clown can write something like this and not have to fear physical harm or being dropped through the floor, basically proves that he goes to the proctologist to be treated for migranes. Problem is, he's too stooopit to realize it.

By the way, the Redstate obscenity bans have never been a problem for me - until today.

He's not worth the rope.

And it pays to avoid that kind of talk. People take you seriously.

The Academy: researching the Illiberal Arts

The Fuzzy Puppy of the VRWC.

Next up comes the "Baby Killer" op-ed, and then a Winter Soldier statement from someone, to be published at the Washington Post:

They told the stories at times they had personally raped, cut off ears, cut off heads, taped wires from portable telephones to human genitals and turned up the power, cut off limbs, blown up bodies, randomly shot at civilians, razed villages in fashion reminiscent of Genghis Khan, shot cattle and dogs for fun, poisoned food stocks, and generally ravaged the countryside of South Vietnam in addition to the normal ravage of war, and the normal and very particular ravaging which is done by the applied bombing power of this country.

-- John Forbes Kerry, April 22, 1971.

It was bound to happen. Jane Fonda was in Washington the other day practically quoting Robert Kaiser's most recent editorial word-for-word. She must have memorized it:

After nearly four years of ineffectual war-fighting, after the collapse of domestic support for President Bush and his policies, after the expenditure of thousands of lives and hundreds of billions of dollars, it no longer seems possible to avoid the grim conclusion: For the United States, Iraq has become another Vietnam.

... and Silence is no longer an Option!!

Meanwhile, Kerry is in Europe calling the United States a "pariah." Robert Redford is demanding a "big apology" during the breaks between the bestiality and child-rape movies at his film festival. Feingold is working to yank the funds. Hugh Hewitt is tracking the ever-expanding wave of bloviating, butt-covering, and forfeiture among our own party.

Fellas, Arkin's stuff is just the beginning. Chants of "Baby Killers!!" can't be far behind. The Democrats know the tune; it's the only one they remember.
